Shield charging + headphones = humming noise! - Shield Tablet Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Whenever I charge the Shield I can hear a very deep loud constant humming noise on the plugged in headphones. Impossible to use headphones then!!
Is my brandnew Shield damaged or is this a bug?

I have the same issue only mine happens all the time even when not charging. Think it's a design flaw, I know a few people at work who own shields too and they all have the same problem.
To answer your question I don't believe we have damaged tablets just slightly annoying ones (bug/design flaw)

First off, thank you for your answer.
Happens all the time. That's pretty bad. Unacceptable bad IMO.
Do you have the new K1?
I do.
The strange thing, if I charge the Shield with my powerbank it doesn't make any noise.
So it may very well be the charger (Aukey Qualcomm quick Charger 2) that's causing the problem.

Yeah. I have the K1, it's just 2 weeks old (had it on preordered with scan for months) oddly enough I got an OTA update to 1.3 today and the issue for me has gone entirely. Hope same happens for you.

OTA update to 1.3 ? What's the change log?

Captivate Headphone Jack problem!!!

So I don't know if it's my ROM, my phone, or what, but I've tried 3 pairs of earphones, and sound only comes out of the left earbud. When I push down on the headphone jack I can sometimes get it to play faintly through both, but usually not. I'm putting the earbuds in all the way, they just don't seem to function. I treat my phone very well, and this really sucks, since I bought it for the music player mainly. Do you guys think AT&T will replace it? (After returning to stock, of course) or am I out of luck? Also, the water damage indicator shows no signs of water damage, and the phone itself looks great, since I usually keep it in a silicone case. I'd really appreciate any insight into this problem. =\
Thanks in advance.
**also, I'm running the newest version of Darkyy's Raw steel.
Silly question: Have you checked inside the headphone port for lint?
This happen to me with a phone once. Took me 2 weeks to figure it out. Since my phone was in my pocket all the time I had apparently gotten some lint in the port and packed it in tightly when I next tried to plug in some headphones.

Yep... Still nothing I notice that when I push down on the headphones farther than they "stick" I can get sound to play through both earbuds... huh...
Have you tried the earbuds that came with the phone?
The phone has a one year warranty, so if something is wrong they will replace it. But why mention the water sensor? Did it get wet at some point?
Of course AT&T will return it, if you bought it from them...?
OK guys, just an update....
So I called AT&T and put on my innocent, "what can haz root?" persona, and after a quick runthrough with a CS rep ("What's a factory data reset?") they issued me a refurb captivate under warranty. Just so everyone knows, this IS covered by the warranty, assuming you didn't do any physical damage to the phone.
As for the headphones, the left earbud on the stock ones went out after 4 months. They were freaking nice while they worked, though. =\
Thank you all for your suggestions and input.
I am now experiencing this issue for the second time. The first time it was under warranty so I just sent it off but now it's been over a year and I don't think they'll fix it.
For me it seems like my earbuds are what's causing it. They're really nice Shure brand earbuds with a pin for an in-line mic. I find that when I use them in certain jacks I have to pull the plug out a little bit to have them line up correctly without the sound getting super distorted. I think they're knocking something out of place.
However, since the earphone jack has been shot the second time I have a larger problem, the ear speaker is no longer working. Seemed to happen at the exact same time.
Anyways, I think I might get a OneX after this summer so I'm willing to crack this thing open. Any ideas as to what could be the issue?

Speaker Issue?

So i'll be casully playing Modern Combat 5 with my controller when suddenly this weird screeching type noise will come out of the speakers, it lasts for a second then stops although one time it seemed to just keep doing it over and over. It's not part of the game for sure and although I have the increased volume mod this was happening even before i rooted. Anyone else getting this?

Hi.
Also got this when playing Asphalt 8. Its only sometimes when the game is loading.
And its not the same as the static scream that occurs on custom roms like Pac Man.
Thanks

So it seems to be only with Gameloft games?
Hi, bought the tablet last week, noticed some kind of slight buzzing noise coming from the speakers when playing games. Even when I put the sound off.
It's like the CPU is working and you get interference from the speakers.
Spoke with NVIDIA customer service and they suggested trying connecting headphones to test. Did so, and although from the headphones the sound was fine, the speakers still had this slight noise.
Anyone else experiencing similar thing?

Were you plugged in charging the device? To my understanding sometimes that causes the slight buzz.

I think it's a sound driver issue. I've had it happen on other devices when trying to use Viper4Android. I am hoping they address it in the lollipop update.

No, so far I have only used the tablet while discharging. It's very strange how much it varies sometimes; when I played Skylanders (free) it was quite intense. With other games it's not very noticable

I just returned my for a refund due to static popping when using a headset. even with the volume muted i heard he sound. called Nvidia and they are aware that some devices have that defect. I decided to wait and try the nexus 9 if i don't like It I will try the shield again.

Im gettingnthe same thing in Youtube, I hope they fix it.
Same here.
Heard the screach/buzz sound first time when playing Zombie Driver (tablet even turned off afterwards) then later several times in YouTube.
Looks like HW problem to me.
I get a screech of sorts every now and then, even outside of apps, when system sounds and notifications are triggered. Like a lot of other things on the tablet, it might be a hardware issue, but it might be software- I know that I didn't get any before the recent OTA.
When I touch my display I get some static noise on the side speakers, sounds are similar to a hard drive writing, its rather quiet but you can hear it and it sure is annoying!

Same thing happens to me, but i can only hear it in a dead quiet room. I find it tends to mostly go away if you put the power settings in 'battery saver'. My guess would it be some kind of interference from the proc and the audio processor when all the cores are running... not sure if it is just a general hardware thing or perhaps something that can be fixed in the audio driver.
I just had a similar issue, although mine was while playing Hearthstone and was insanely loud! It sounded like a fire drill, and I'm not exaggerating. It wouldn't stop either, like it has in the past, and I had to force shut down the tablet. I'm kind of wishing I would have waited a little longer to buy or waited for the next version to come out. I contacted Nvidia support and they basically gave me the run-around and all they said was that I should send them a video! Seriously??? Like I had the forethought to take a video while my tablet was screaming at me. I guess that's how much Nvidia cares, and I'll be sure to have my camera ready for the next time the SHIELD goes into fire drill mode.

How could they understand what happens if your device freezes when it outputs this sound or gives no usable log to diagnose it, and if you cannot reproduce it easily ? the video request is not so silly... Do you have experienced this just once ?

Well a video is not going to help them any more either now is it? That won't produce logs or outputs, unless you know something i don't. What they should have done is let me ship it back to them, send Me a replacement and run their own diagnostics on it to understand it better... That's what Amazon would do, and this is why they are not selling better. Make sense?
At least if they have a video they will have a clue if they know this issue, if your tablet freezes or not, and try to reproduce it (they won't try for a month to test a game, when maybe there is a software bug on a certain level in it, or whatever else, and maybe this is not hardware related). Nvidia is not responsible for OS instability. At least with a video they'll know it's not a random "one time" crash.
If it was my tablet, I would do a backup, factory reset, install just this one game, and see if there's still a problem.
Of course you can try to convince them to RMA your device, it's not your task to repair it. Good luck.
I had this happen to me yesterday(and couple times before too). Woke the tablet up after about 10 hrs or so and it was dead slow. I tap on something and it takes about 5 seconds for the tablet to register the touch and launch the app. It was during this time that the screeching noise came. And it happened a couple of times as I tried to get this thing to respond to my touches.
Finally had to restart it and it was back to being the zippy tablet that its supposed to be
About the video, i think thats a great idea, since that will at least give an idea about the sound. I dont know how to explain the sound either. Its like a metallic grinding noise, which is pretty scary because I feel like the fricking tablet is about to explode or something.
noise is going up and down, but always there
Same problem here.. Buzzing from booth speakers and at the back of the tablet. Weird thing is I can't open the faceworks app.. Gives me shader erroror something. Something wrong with GPU? Or is it lollipop update that has screwed with the tab? Since I can't see many older posts about this I mean.
almost every shield tablet makes that noise. its annoying but nothing wrong with it, its just poor electric shielding which causes interferences with the speakers.
Do you guys experience a slow down or lag when the sound comes on? I mean other than @crazyjc81.
I suspect it is related to the general lag issues that are going around. Ex. Sound is sent to the speakers and then it lags so the sound just keeps going until the processor gets around to turning it off.

Vernee Mars Pro Fingerprint Sensor Broken

I have had this phone for exactly 24 hours, and until then the fingerprint scanner installed in it worked relatively well.
After 24H the sensor decided to activate repeatedly automatically (without me touching the sensor) and finally, stop working.
It will not register any new fingerprints or react to the unlock feature or nothing at all. Rebooting won't fix anything, I have yet to try a hard reset.
My question is, even though the phone is really new, has any of this happened to you guys before?
If so, How have you fixed it?
Thank you and sorry if this is in the wrong section.
Mine arrived yesterday, I will let you know how I get on. Hope you get it sorted.
Off topic: I really want to Root it so that I can use titanium backup but I think its too new! I also ordered a plastic Vernee Mars (not pro) case in the hope that it fits, almost identical dimensions

I hope it works, mine is still broken, and now the audio doesnt work at all, if im playing music for instance, it will not sound, and every now and then, play 0.1s of the song, it's really a good phone but its getting on my nerves
Also, update me about the case
Also wanting an update on the case, dimensions look to be near enough identical and there are more case option around for the non pro.
So, a new update
The fingerprint scanner decided to work suddenly today, I opened security and decided to see if I could add a fingerprint to unlock it and to my surprise it decided to work.
Regarding the speaker, I found out that if I suck on the speaker (yes, i put my mouth on the speaker hole and aspire air gently) the music, app, game, anything begins playing, and as soon as I stop breathing in it stops playing.
Why is this happening to me? It honestly is super strange, I already contacted gearbest and I hope they help me solve it or give me a new one

I live in western Europe, and it took GearBest about a month to mail me the phone (It is understandable due to the high demand of the phone at the time) If i'm honest, since this is one of the very first units, I am not surprised it has fails, Its prone to happening and I already was expecting something to fail in a very very new chinese phone.
I will update my experience with GB

The case for the mars fits, pretty much perfect. Did you try a hard reset in the end, at all? Mine is working really well although ive heard the phone is compromised by malware/spyware (did manage to find the folder but you can't disable anything) that's why I am trying to root asap. Other thread is here to follow: https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software-hacking/tutorial-vernee-mars-pro-root-t3652213
Did post this one in another thread but this one seems better:

I have this device a week and it's great. Directly installed the OTA of September. Everything worked fine.
Up and until yesterday the fingerprint scanner was really sensitive maybe too sensitive. Then yesterday evening the phone was charged to 100% before I went to sleep so I plugged it out and powered it down to be fully loaded at 100% this morning.
After starting up it seems that the fingerprint print scanner is a lot less sensitive and sometimes it feels sensitivity is degrading during the day of use, to just no sensitivity at all.
Does someone else experienced the same? Does someone have a solution?

It doesn't seem to be a software problem, but a hardware problem. For me the fingerprint sensor works for some time, then one day it messes up and stops working for a week or so. I really dont know what's wrong, seems to fix by itself.

Thank, so it is a matter of ups and downs?
I did some gaming while on charge yesterday so maybe some heating can cause this?
I also have some Bluetooth issues while calling on my carkit. Music on my carkit is fine. Will an app like Bluetooth Auto connect be of any help?
Besides that I really like the phone overall.

Yes, it seems to be a matter of ups and downs, same with the speaker. Apparently when the humidity is high, my speaker refuses to work at high volumes ( it crackles and then it stops working)
My charger blew up recently actually (But that was because of some problem with my home's powerline). I got a Samsung charger, slightly slower charge, but my battery now lasts for much longer I have realises (I'm speaking 9V charging instead of 12V)
It is true the phone heats a lot, that's why I'd avoid using it while charging or at least if I plan to charge it all the way, since by the end it will be really hot.
Regarding bluetooth, I really havent had any problems whatsoever, therefore I can't really tell, for me bluetooth has always worked well with cars and speakers and so. I doubt an app like that be of any help, since it should pair automatically with the closest bluetooth source so perhaps that could cause a conflict, but I havent tried it so I can't know for sure.

Cheered too early, messed up again... It seems that a moist finger works better. It notice the touch better, but then it doesn't recognizes it....
Bleutooth calling went ok today. Seems though that I have the P20 or P25 lite version of the Mars Pro. Not the regular P2t
Should have chosen the Xiaomi Note 4 Global instead... I will monitor it a couple of days but I think I will look for a better 64gb/6gb USB type-c device in the near future....[emoji19]

Microphone and speaker no longer working

I have run into the dreaded headphone jack problem. The phone won't play audio through the speakers and doesn't use the microphone because it thinks that headphones are connected. I've tried resetting it to factory settings and it didn't fix anything which is why I think it's not a software problem.
After some Googling I found that I'm not the only one to have this problem and that Google is replacing the units with this hardware fault. Unfortunately I didn't buy the phone via play store so I can't return it directly to google.
I'd like to try and fix it myself. If anyone knows where I could buy a headphone jack for the 5" pixel I'd be very grateful. Before I buy the replacement part I was thinking of removing the headphone jack and trying to start the phone like without it. My reasoning is that the phone would then default to playing the sound through speakers and I would be sure that it's a headphone jack problem. Would that work at all or the phone won't even start?
I need your advice and opinions, thanks

I ordered a replacement headphone jack and as soon as it arrives, within the next 2 weeks I hope, I'll replace it and see if that gets it fixed.
A couple of more details:
-problems started about 3 days after updating to Oreo
-at the beginning the volume would first turn itself gradually down to zero and I had to fight it with the volume up (I would always lose eventually xD)
-there was usually a loud pop heard through the headphones after that 'battle' and then the audio and mic would completely cut off
-restarting the phone would enable the audio and mic again but the problems returned as soon as I plugged in the headphones again (tried with several different headphones)
-factory reset didn't fix it and after a couple of days of problems I'm now stuck with no audio at all and no mic input
-my phone can't recognize the headphones anymore
I have the exact struggle, restart will work for a while and then problem return, when I contacted google they offered a replacement but since I'm not in Canada at the moment, they will not be able to process my replacement request, but google representative told me that I can try and replace the mic with the charging port(as it all comes together) and it should fix the issue, but I also think that it might be the headphones jack, also this happened after I tried Android O beta.

I'm still waiting on the part to arrive. I'm expecting it within the next two weeks. I'll try to document the replacement with photos and/or video so others can do it if it turns out successful
Okay guys, here's the update with some good news and some bad news.
The replacement headphone jack arrived yesterday and the good news is that I replaced it and it seems to have fixed the problem! Yay!
But the bad news is that in the process I damaged the LCD screen so now I'm waiting on a replacement LCD. I guess I should've expected that because the screen and LCD itself are extremely sensitive and the damage is not even visible, but it's simply not working anymore.
So how do I know it actually works? Well since the phone used to be paired to my PC via bluetooth, whenever I turn on my PC a notification sounds on my phone if I want to pair or not.
Minor bad news - I tried to record the whole process as a tutorial for anyone who'll try to fix this themselves but my camera's battery died halfway and I lost everything I recorded.
Here are the 2 teardown videos I used for guidance: First and Second. I highly recommend you watch them entirely before attempting anything.
I got the headphone jack on eBay from here. It is totally overpriced but it's the only place I was able to find it.
I'm getting my replacement LCD and adhesive for it from Replace Base

I have the exact struggle, restart will work for a while and then problem return, when I contacted google they offered a replacement but since I'm not in Canada at the moment, they will not be able to process my replacement request, but google representative told me that I can try and replace the mic with the charging port(as it all comes together) and it should fix the issue, but I also think that it might be the headphones jack, also this happened after I tried Android O beta.

I definitely recommend others try to get Google to replace it. I got mine from Swappa second hand and they still respected the warranty. Much easier and cheaper than replacing it yourself.
wow its nice to hear that it work, but some say that its the charging port board that has a problem(the location of the microphone). should i buy headphone jack replacement or charging port board?
yesterday i put i my pixel into freezer for 2 hour(i tried this because it help my previous phone which is nexus 5x come back to life for a while haha) and rebooted to safe mode and tried to record and microphone work, rebooted to normal and until now it still work, but im hoping that your replace method would be a permanent fix and i will do that too.
please update this thread again as soon as you replace your lcd
thank you
Another update. I got the replacement screen today but the problem hasn't been fixed. Well, partly it has been. The speaker now finally works when nothing is plugged in but the phone can't recognize any headphones. So, like Mattish13, if you can get it replaced by Google do so. Fixing things on my own is my hobby and was logical since I couldn't get mine replaced by Google, but this fix is not worth your time or money, trust me. I'm guessing the next thing to get replaced would be the daughterboard, maybe that would fix the problem finally, but in my opinion it's not worth it.
Ironic how so many problems with the headphone jack appeared for so many people and at the same time Google decided to ditch the jack for Pixel 2
Edit: just to be clear, since I already invested in a new screen and new jack, I will drop in another 25$ for the new daughterboard. If that doesn't fix it, nothing can

As strange as it sounds the freezer trick works! I think the issue appears when the phone heats or it's heat related

Yes, sorry for forgetting to post earlier. I changed the daughterboard and it appeared to be working perfectly. But about 30 minutes later the microphone again wasn't working and there was no audio. I was back at the beginning.
Then I did a factory reset and again it worked. But every time, after about 30 minutes it stops working. At this point I have no idea what the exact problem is.
I've definitely fixed it partly somehow because before I couldn't get the microphone and speaker to work at all. Now I can, but it fails after some time eventually. The headphones jack works normally until the failure happens.
I've tried the freezer trick after that and had no noticeable improvement. My theory now is that the problem probably was on the daughterboard but the replacement one I got (which is actually a refurbished part) might have had the same problem but not as serious as my original part.

Thanks for the update, interesting... Maybe the daughterboard is faulty as well, but didn't Google response was that there is a crack line in the audio codec, as far as I know the audio codec is on the motherboard, I guess this problem won't be fixed after all, it is really annoying!! I wanted to get another pixel maybe XL this time, I found some offers with used ones, but now I am really afraid to buy one and this problem appears with the second phone.
Yes, found that response but unfortunately changing the motherboard is not possible because I couldn't find any place that sells them and I guess it's the same as getting a new phone in the end ?
I ended up getting a pixel XL but Google said this problem appears on devices manufacturered before March 2017,so I made sure when I was buying that I got a device manufactured after that and I did. So far so good ?

Do you mean your phone had warranty till 2019 or all pixel devices, because when I contacted Google the guy on the phone told me my phone has warranty till Jan 2018, which sucks in my case as I'm at the moment outside of Canada and won't be returning till summer 2018

I believe all pixel devices because I bought mine just after they came out in Australia... Phone screen broke and when I replaced it I had these problems... Told Google it was a hassle contacting my australian provider and would cost alot and they said it had warranty until '19 and that they would replace it here in the states free of charge... It may have been only till '18 but my first pixel was faulty as well and I had it exchanged out there n straya so maybe that's why it is until 2019

Oppo overheating

Had the oppo phone since the 10th of of June and generally impressed with it after having a Note 8 for a couple of years.
The only issue I have so far is that when I’ve used it in the car to navigate and the phone has given me a warning about overheating. Has anyone else had this? The first time I was plugged into a generic car charger but the second was just the phone itself.
Look forward to hearing from you.

Never had any sort of heating issues, may be worth factory resetting or getting a replacement via warranty

So far it seems that the vegan leather variant really might be heaving some slight overheating issues as the plastic doesn't dissipate the heat so well.
Ceramic variant is much better in this regard, basically confirmed by being able to maintain stable 600K+ score on Antutu while the orange variant scores 600K in the first run, but then drops by 50K in each run respectively.
