Hi,
I have TMO Nexus 5, 2.5 yrs old. Suddenly, my phone shuts down with more than have battery charge remaining. I cannot do anything by pressing any buttons. it is dead. If I connect to the charger, phone goes on the loop. The google sign appears on the screen, then it goes dark in a second or 2, then sign appears again, and so on. I can access the bootloader menu but only for a second. Then the phone goes off again. I cannot even properly turn it off, even when press power/volume up/down keys together. It just will not shut off.
Happened a few times before, but I was able to revive it by charging 3-4 hours and eventually it stopped looping. This time, no luck. Between the episodes like this, it worked just fine. Stock, never rooted, latest android 6.01.
Bad battery or something else? I did order the battery and will try to swap it, but would like to know if this could be anything else.
Normally, I would try to simply remove the battery and then put it back, but this battery is a little trickier to remove. I do not want to do this until I decide the battery needs to be changed.
Thanks very much.

So today, as i was on my way to work I accidentally held down the lockscreen button and the power menu popped up (I was on Glorious Overdoes V2) in the middle of a text and i pressed reboot accidentally... My phone never rebooted... It was stuck on the black Sidekick 4G/T-Mobile screen and then it would go black, then once again that screen would pop up... I removed the battery and put it back in, and without me pressing any buttons the same screen came back up... I let it sit for a while and after 20minutes nothing changed except the phone got really hot. Luckily I had my OLD Nokia in my car and popped my SIM card in it so that i could continue having a phone. I let The Sidekick sit for 4hours and it was extremely hot and then eventually it just turned off completely (Im assuming the battery drained, it was at 90% 4 hours before.) I got home, plugged it in and it wouldn't even turn on the charging screen. Somebody told me that my Motherboard is fried but I don't know. I called T-mobile and they're going to send me a new phone since it's still in the 1-year warranty period.
Anyone know if they're going to be able to inspect my old device and find out if i rooted/flashed it? because i can't get into it or anything to ODIN
I feel like they will try putting a new battery in it, and if it still wont turn on you should be fine.
It got hot because the CPU was churning over something and couldn't enter a low power state. I bet you could coax the phone into download mode and reflash it.
what do you mean coax the phone into download mode? by using the button combo to get it into download mode when turning on? I've tried that and it doesn't work. I tried rebooting into recovery and that wont work either. Also, it wont charge the battery anymore...
I've always had a hard time getting into download mode, and my phone works fine. I just spent 5 minutes trying different combinations until I got it.
I've heard people say trackpad-power button, volume down-home-power button, volume up/down-put battery in-plug in USB, etc etc etc. But the only method that works for me is to put in the battery, plug in the USB, wait for the charging screen, then hold volume down-trackpad-power, releasing power as soon as the screen goes black
You say your phone is turning on as soon as the battery is inserted? What if you have it plugged into USB first?
I had the exact same problem, I sent it into samsung and they just replaced a part(never told me which one) and it was fixed. I did noticed that when the sccreen was poped open to show the keyboard, it would stop. But it's probably a loose cable like I've read before.

Worst case scenario if you can't figure it out here on XDA, you could always sell it on eBay for parts as defective.
So I am at work and I charged my phone fully, then I unplugged it and put it in the drawer at my desk. I have pulled it out a couple of times for random things, but put it back in the drawer. I just heard it vibrate and assumed I got a text, but I opened it up and when I pulled out the phone it was warm, like I had been using intensively, but I haven't touched it for probably an hour or more. I tried to turn it on, but the screen is just black. The phone has shut itself off. Tried turning back on, screen stayed completely black, didn't turn on backlight or anything, and just vibrated quickly then stopped. If I hold down the power button it will vibrate about once every four seconds. Battery pulled, tried again. Same result.
Currently running Paranoid Android 1.9.5a Everything has been working fine, so I don't know what could have caused this. Seems like maybe some rogue app started eating all the battery and the phone is just out of juice? Something must have been running though to cause the heat... I tried plugging it in to charge, but the same result, no activity on the screen, but it vibrates once every few seconds. Any help is really appreciated. Thanks.
EDIT
Let the phone sit for a few minutes to cool down. Tried turning on again and it booted up into recovery. I selected to reboot. Everything went normally, booted through K-exec, got to the main screen only to be greeted with a battery warning 0% battery left then immediately turned off. The phone was unplugged for MAYBE 4 hours, most of the time just doing nothing (that I knew of) So something must have been eating away at the battery like crazy that I didn't realize for the past couple of hours. Any ideas guys?

I'm having the same problem
So I haven't used my Nexus for somewhere around 2 months since I got a new phone. The Nexus S was working fine prior, I had actually just got it back from Samsung after them fixing an issue related to my top volume button. After, I received it, the phone was in a complete stock condition, like it was just bought from a store (no unlocked bootloader, fastboot, Clockwork, etc.). A bit later, the OTA Jelly Bean update comes in, but I don't use it too much as I just got my new phone.
I left it on and ignored it for the past 2 months. I just assumed the battery would run out, and if I wanted to use it I would just plug it back in and that would work. Now the Nexus S won't show any sign of life. I've tried removing the battery and trying to turn it on while plugged in, when it's plugged in with my battery in, the charging indicator it used to show never shows up. Plugging it into my computer with or without a battery does nothing, it doesn't even show up in my device manager as "Unknown". I've also tried holding VOLUP + PWR for 10 seconds with all these different situations. Nothing. The phone is essentially dead. Any clue why this happened and how I should go about fixing it?
Nevermind. After leaving it plugged in with the battery for ~20 minutes it finally powered on! Hopefully this thread helps out someone in the same situation. It just seems as though it takes a long time to get it to a state in which it'll power on.
Hey guys,
So my beloved Nexus S has completely seemed to have kicked the bucket. I'll tell you what happened in as much detail as I can, followed by what I've tried and if any of you guys have any tips, please enlighten me cause as it stands right now, I am at a loss.
I was over at my buddy's place for the game tonight and his place is pretty much a faraday cage where I get absolutely no signal. So upon leaving I noticed that my phone is still displaying zero bars. Nothing unusual. Figured I'll check it again in a minute or two to let it reconnect. 5 minutes pass and still nothing. Rare but I have had this happen before. On the rare occasion that the phone just wasn't able to jump back onto Wind's network, I would either cycle airplane mode on and off or just restart the phone and this would fix it. So I turn airplane mode on but notice that while the signal meter disappears, the plane icon never pops up. At this point I start thinking something is amiss... I try to turn wifi on or off but once again, it doesn't pick up anything.... time to cycle the power. So I hold down the power button, select Power Off on the pop up menu and wait for the phone to shut down. Phone shuts off. Wait a few seconds. Turn phone back on. The Google logo appears for a brief second, then the screen just goes blank and the phone just dies.
The phone is rooted but is running stock Jellybean.
Battery was at least 50% when this happened.
It will not respond to the power button at all.
I've tried pulling the battery as well as using my spare battery.
I've tried holding Vol Up + Power, as well as Vol Up + Vol Down + Power.
I've tried plugging it into the charger. (No response. Doesn't even show as charging).
I've tried plugging it into my laptop. Same thing. Tried pulling the battery while it's plugged in and booting/holding reset. Nothing
Phone is completely bricked.
Edit: Just noticed this but I've had the phone plugged into my laptop while typing this up and the area just above the battery around the SIM card has heated up a bit.
Any suggestions? I seriously don't have the cash for a new phone right now so any help is much appreciated =/.
Most likely the motherboard is toast. Happened to a lot of us after upgraded to JB/CM10.
Bring it back to Wind service centre for repair. Not sure how much you will be paying if out of warranty.
I have a HTC 10 (new old stock) that I have been using for 2 months, on stock Oreo.
Everything was fine until last week when suddenly in the middle of reading an email the screen froze, a few seconds later the screen went black and would not boot up. Nothing at all, not even with a hard reset VOL DOWN + POWER or VOL UP + VOL DOWN + POWER. Tried holding it for A LONG TIME like 5 minutes, no luck. The phone had a hard brick and that's it.
Occasionally, after a few hours, I would try to reset it just for the hack of it. Or connect it to a charger (no charging light) Eventually after about 20 hours, it booted up again after I held all three buttons for a few seconds. Then it worked like nothing has happened.
It kept running for several hours, I charged it up to 100%, ran down to about 80%, then the screen froze again and died. Same thing happened, won't boot up at all. But if I wait another day or so, kept trying, it will boot up again.
I know the HTC 10 is known for it's horrible battery drain issue, and I have experienced that myself with another HTC 10, this is not it. The battery is running fine on this one. This is something else.
After doing this for a few iterations, I was able to figure out a pattern.
When the screen froze and the phone dies, it will not boot up no matter what you do. But for some reason something is still going on as the battery is still being consumed, a day or so later, when the battery is completed depleted down to 0%, and as soon as it hits 0%, whatever causes it to not boot unlocks and allow it to boot again, as long as you have it on the charger, the charging light will come up at that time, and as soon as it gets a little bit of juice, it will boot up again normally. Except when it does boot up, the date is reset to December 31, 1969 7PM.
After testing this for two more iterations, I am reasonably sure this is what's going on. Then I did a factory reset.
Once it's factory reset, I did nothing except turned on WIFI and didn't do any further setup except surf the internet a bit on WIFI, and about 10 hours later, it died again. Now I know, if I leave it alone for 20 hours, then plug it in for a few minutes, it will boot up again.
So here are my questions.
(1) The phone appears to have bricked during the 20 hours that is was totally non-responsive. What is happening that's consuming the battery?
(2) Does this seem like a hardware issue or software issue?
