Does this exist? - General Questions and Answers

I am trying to find a free toggle widget to do one simple thing - enable or disable the WiFi Calling feature on my T-Mobile HTC One M7.
Why? I've been having shoddy internet connection issues at home for the last year. Spikes, timeouts, and packet loss before it even gets TO the routing server. How this affects my phone is obvious when you also consider I can barely get 2 bars of 2G signal while inside my home. The best way around this is to turn WiFi Calling on and set it to "WiFi Only" mode so it doesn't try to turn the cell radio back on while the connection is unstable (never more than 3-4 seconds). Just means I have a few seconds here and there where it may drop a call or delay a text or something, which is a small price to pay if you ask me.
However, I can't do WiFi calling outside of the house, which means going in and disabling it every time I want to go somewhere. After a couple months of this (because WiFi calling doesn't disable when WiFi is off for some reason...), I'm trying to find an easier solution. Losing 20% of my battery overnight from having it swapping back and forth is a pain, so I'm not going to set it to "WiFi Preferred", which started all of this.
I tried the application at this thread but it only seems to want to work with Tasker, which is a paid app and currently not a financial option for me (that same $3 is two days' worth of food).

Maybe you need to look into "Mobile Data Toggle" widgets? Accompanied with wi-fi toggle widget, you can set Mobile data to Off, and wi-fi - On when you're at home, and vice-versa when you're away.

Mobile Data is always off 'cause I have a minimal 50MB plan. I have a WiFi toggle on my power bar (wifi, bluetooth, gps, brightness, etc). I need a WiFi CALLING toggle.

[App Idea] GSM/WCDMA Switcher

Hey guys,
As the radio stack is the second cause of battery draining after the display, I was thinking about a way to save battery life by reducing the impact of the 3G connection. Most of the energy saving apps on the market are only disconnecting the phone from the APN, but this isn't a great solution as each app could be set to update at different times and thus being unable to download data even if the user sets some exceptions. So I thought that an application which operates in the following way could be great to save power:
- The phone uses the 3G network while the screen is on;
- It switches to 2G when phone is in standby mode;
- It disconnects the APN data connection while the phone is using a WiFi Network;
Obviously to avoid possible issues during the switch between 2G and 3G the following rules are applied:
- If there's an incoming call or a phone call is being performed, there won't be any radio switch until the phone call is ended;
- If there's an incoming SMS/MMS, there won't be any radio switch until the text message is fully received.
Unfortunately as I'm not a Java developer I can't code anything like this. But let me know what you guys think about my idea and if it's technically feasible... Maybe some developer could be interested into further exploring my thoughts and will try to create such an app
Cheers
I'm not a developer but I think it sounds like a great idea. I go into settings and switch it to 2g when I'm in spotty areas outside of town. I have to work a bit to keep my N1 battery alive all day...
Hello I'm new here.
I don't know if your suggested profiles are the best case scenarios. You would need to calculate your data throughput, not just the radio power.
If you need to send 100 packets, your radio would be on the longest for edge > 3g > wifi. So, even though wifi uses the most power, it would be for a much shorter duration.
A profile for "place calls only" would work somewhat like airplane mode, but still keep track of towers. Your phone just wouldn't register on the network unless you wanted to place a call. You would miss your incoming calls, have no data connection, or sms. But, you could have it check at an interval for voicemail or sms. This would be most useful for "ringer off" situations like class or meeting.
Afaik Android is always connected to the APN even if the phone is not downloading anything, consuming a lot of battery power. On other platforms, i.e. Windows Mobile, the connection can be terminated by user and re-established when an app needs that.
The amount of data downloaded by widgets, Google mobile applications or apps which operates in background like eBuddy or Facebook should be quite low, so downloading the required data by using GSM or WCDMA while the phone is in standby would be pretty much the same. The only difference is that downloading stuff using GSM/EDGE should take much less energy power.
So that's why I thought about the app I described before: the phone can save a lot of energy power while in standby and be back to its full horsepower when there is any kind of user intervention. Pretty much the same thing that the system already does for CPU usage. It scales to the less consuming protocol (or, in the case of CPU, frequency and voltage) to save power
I know on the google api it isn't possible to do this, but I don't think that isn't the problem.
At the moment you have 3 options. GSM only, WCDMA only and GSM/WCDMA. Whenever you switch between the 3 of them, the phone will lose signal for 10 seconds before it can find the best network. So the switcher here is not the best as you will lose connection, and what if you are downloading something at the same time...
What you need is when the phone is on GSM/WCDMA that it knows the best network to pick from depending on the phones lifecycle. GSM/WCDMA loses battery power because it always tries to find the best network to connect to, so for example if you are on GSM it will constantly try to find a 3G network etc (as far as I understand it).
What we need is the ability for the phone to stay on GSM when the phone is idle and then when the phone is woken up to automatically start to search for a WCDMA network and then gracefully switch over like it does now. For this I have no idea if it is possible as I don't know how the scanning of the network works. If it is possible then that would be wicked. But this is what we need.
my preference would be if the phone would stay on 3g as long as any possible even if there would be a more reliable 2g connection and only switch to 2g if there really is no way to connect to 3g. turn of apn if the screen us turned of for longer then 1 or 2 minutes and only check every 15 minutes or so.
most of the time I'm on 3g only mode . since I live in a city I got good coverage almost all over the city. only problem is that when there is no 3g available also my phone is unreachable. I don't really miss data connectivity when there is no 3g since 2g is so slow that I rather have no internet at all but not being sale to be called or texted is a major disadvantage...

WiFi Calling not Ringing while Screen Off

So...I am at an office today that I have zero cell coverage since I am in the basement sitting in a network closet. I enabled WiFi calling and I am able to place and receive calls. However, when the screen goes off and the phone locks I do not get any inbound calls. When I call from a land line the call just rings and rings and rings and never gets VM and my cell phone does not ring.
Has anyone else played around with WiFi calling and seen this behavior? I am assuming that WiFi goes into some type of power save mode and disables the WiFi radio when the phone locks.

Sounds right. I don't have my Sensation yet, and have never had an HTC (gotta switch from my Vibrant this week due to GPS issues), but it looks like this may solve your problem.
Menu > Settings > Wireless and Networks > Wi-Fi Settings
On the Wifi Settings screen, press the Menu button and choose Advanced.

Yah...I already tried that. I checked Best Wi-Fi performance and adjusted my Sleep policy to never. Still no dice. I have even noticed that it doesn't always ring right away when unlocked. This is a very poor performing app IMO. It seems to work well if you need to make a call...but inbound is unreliable.

I use WiFi calling at home and I have WiFi set at the default setting, not Best WiFi. I also have WiFi preferred set on my phone. My phone has been sitting for > 1hr with the screen locked/dark and it rang when I called it from my home line. Doesn't seem to be an issue here at all with it not ringing.

Seems to be the same issue I had. I'll try and do some testing on my home network tonight.

If you use any app like juice defender to control your WiFi make sure it will not disconnect you while your screen is off. May not be your issue but it was mine untill I changed settings. I make and recieve calls just fine now and no missed calls.

I still see my phone connect or at least check the connection over the network not using WiFi though. My WiFi signal is strong and I'll see the 2G signal pop up for a second and then go dormant again. So something is definitely checking but yeah pretty much everything goes out over your WiFi connection but the radios do turn on from time to time from what I can see.
Seems to be working on my home network fine CMY ..
Can receive and make calls ok ..
I have mine set to ..
1. WIFI Sleep - Never ( However I changed it to 15 minutes then back )
2. Best WIFI Performance
I did notice you have to press the menu key and pick SAVE
to save the settings ..
Seems to work at my other office today. I have it set to WiFi Perfered. The only differnce here is that I actully get GSM signal in most of the building. Anyways...I'll do more testing when time permits and report back my findings. Thanks for all those that chimed in.
Now just need to get GPS to lock in a resonable time frame.

cmy,
Have you had any luck solving the wifi calling or GPS lock? My Sensation takes forever to get a GPS lock (if at all sometimes) - way slower than a friend's G2. I've had luck setting the wifi calling to cellular preferred. That seems to have helped me, based on what testing I can do. In your case you need wifi preferred and I'd like to be able to use that option too. Is it possible your office (and mine) is blocking something on the wifi network that is preventing it? At home, I haven't heard of anybody calling me and it not ringing - just at work.

Wifi calling = FAIL unless with google/voice.
Tell your provider to suck less and reinvest.
Wifi calling is working great for me...I have no reception at my house wifi calling has been a savior. I use the same settings that warlock mentioned earlier

Thanks. I'm going to write it off as my office blocking a port that wifi calling needs, or something like that. I have mine set to prefer cellular and that seems to make it function at work. At home, where I live in a T-mobile deadzone, it seems to switch over to wifi properly.

Can I turn off data plan access on AT&T Smart Phone?

So I've had this HTC S743 for about 5 days and I thought I had it setup correctly to use wifi for data comm.
wifi enabled and selected to use my home network. I can see the radio tower status icon and my locally named network is also displayed.
Under the comm manager the data connection is off.
I have a very simple $45/mo plan with no monthly data plan.
Over the last 5 days I have been surfing the web a bit did some email tests with my ISP and used the on board GPS app which is horrible. Not heavy usage but experimentation to see if I like how the phone works.
After 2 days I get an email from AT&T that I have extremely high data usage exceeding my account limit (for having no monthly plan) and that I should sign up for a data plan at once.
$29 over 2 days for this little bit of fluff? A total of 2,900kb in data.
So I call up AT&T and they tell me this and that and want me to sign up for a plan which I may do. But I want to be able to know that the datacomm is happening via WIFI when I can see a selected WIFI is in service.
They also told me that all GPS data is forced through 3G and bypasses WIFI???
Can anyone here give me an idea about what I may be doing wrong and whether AT&T is correct about the GPS service?
Is there a better GPS app that doesn't do this? This one pretty much stinks anyway. A resolution of 1000 meters doesn't cut it.
AT&T also informed me that I can't have a smart phone without a data contract. Really? I've had one for 6 years like that but it wasn't WIFI capabale and too small to bother with web access.
Thanks for any light you shed on the subject.
One thing I have subsequently found out is that if data connection is off and WIFI is off then when I go into IE and start surfing it does bring up pages. Then when I go back to the Comm Manager the Data Connection to check the status of my connections it is still off for an instant and then it automatically turns itself on as though it had been turned on by use of IE and the status was just being updated.
Last night I installed a newer version of Google maps and was only able to install it via the web browser as opposed to via the Activesynch application on my PC. I was concerned that this might trigger turning on the 3G connection. So I had it set up for a WIFI connection ONLY and installed the app. Afterwards I went into the connection manager and once again the data conn. was turned back on so it's possible that it utilized AT&T's 3G network instead.
Is there any way to control or stop this?
GPS data doesn't have anything to do with 3G/Wifi data......
I know it's supposed to be positioning via the satellites through the GPS antenna but the the description data is coming over the network right? So it appears that even though I'm setup for WIFI access and it's showing as connected with an IP address etc. when I try the Googlemaps GPS app it turns the data conn. for 3G back on.
Thanks for chiming in ...
I have been copying over and installing some new apps to try out this morning via usb. WIFI is on and I'm loged in. None are datacomm oriented that I know of (unless they'r trying to make an internet access to notify about being installed) none the less I just checked again and my data conn. is once again turned back on. Is this typical behavior for a windows mobile phone (6.1) or is this just an AT&T "feature".
Sorry, I don't have a WM6 phone!

[Q] does 4G turn off when wifi connects?

I know this is a stupid question, and I'm actually embarrassed that it's my first.. but, does 4G get turned off automatically when I connect to a WiFi network? I know it maintains a connection to the data network for other services, but what about 4G specifically?
I think I answered my own question.. In the Phone Status info page the "mobile network state" DOES toggle between connected/disconnected based on my wifi status.
Not fully, or servcies such as mms would not work. However you can enable this to happen through Juice Defender, and possibly other applications as well. I fully disable network data with wifi connected through juice defender, only drawback I see is unable to send/rec mms untill you disable wifi, allowing the network connection to estblish itself again.
edit: This is only for the data network portion, voice services can and will still carry over the 4g conenction which is just enhanced 3g
Does it go to a state that uses less power than the "usual" network mode? I'm looking for ways to conserve power while maintaining full functionality. Using Llama and JuiceDefender right now also.
Juice Defender can disable the data portion of the network which saves battery when connected with wifi. In the on the "About" screen in Juice Defender scroll down, there will be an option that says "disable on wifi" under which you can select to disable the network data

[Q] wifi/data auto toggle?

This may be a dumb question but is there a way to set up wifi and data to automatically toggle? As in, when wifi is available it uses wifi, but when its not it automatically switches to 3g/4g? When im home i like to use wifi, but then when I leave I lose it and usually forget to switch over to data, so I get no emails or updates on anything until I look at my phone.
Option 1: Leave wifi and data on all the time.
When a trusted wifi network is available and your phone is connected, your phone will not use data (you will see the data indicator automatically disappear even though it is enabled). When you are no longer connected to wifi, your phone will automatically bring the data connection back.
Exception: using apps (usually Verizon-specific) that require a mobile data connection will bring the 3g/4g radio out of dormancy.
Pro: automatic switching, no need for additional apps.
Con: leaving wifi on takes its toll on battery life.
Option 2: Download/Install Llama from the Market
After you teach the program what cell towers are where, you can define criterion (ie you physically leave or enter a defined area, a certain time, etc) to carry out specific actions, including changing volume, display brightness, toggling data connection, wifi connection, bluetooth, gps, etc.
Pro: automatic switching of most anything imaginable, saves battery life compared to leaving wifi on
Con: additional app running in background, occasional instances of bugs

wi-fi matic is the app you want, it auto toggles wifi on when you are on the same cell tower than is near your home, as soon as your cellular switches to your home cell towers it toggles wifi on, and when it's away from home cell towers it toggles wifi off, you can use it for multiple wifi networks as well, i travel for work so i dont have a work wifi but u could have it auto toggle on at work or home, its also extremely easy to use, far easier than any tasker program.
