How to Enable Write External Storage Android MM 6.0.1? - Verizon Galaxy S 5 General

Currently I have installed PD1 Stock S5 Verizon, with Root and unlocked Bootloader access but do not have access to write directly on the SD card I'm using Titanium Backup to make my backup apps but now I can not make this restriction, anyone knows of any solution to this problem.

Is this the same question that you have?

No this option that mensiona in that post is to use the SD as if the internal storage, what I want is to enable the option Write External Storage Android which is blocked from KK and LL but MM still do not know if already there an alternative to enable this function.

You get prompted when you go to write to the storage. You have to follow the file structure to open up the SD card, but once you do that, you can write to sd.

I think what he means is KK-style unrestricted R/W access to the SD card. SDFix might still work, but it hasn't been updated since 2014 and requires root.
In reality though if you enabling full R/W on portable storage breaks Android's use model. The proper way to go about this is to use adoptable storage, which isn't supported out of the box on TouchWiz but can be enabled in CM13.

For Titanium back up, do the following...
open TiBackup
Menu
Preferences...
Backup folder location
Right above the "Detect!" click on "Storage provider:..."
Select DocumentProvider storage
Now you can click on Internal storage and change to SDcard1
Then select "Detect!"
Hopefully that's what you are looking for.

Thanks friend is right this kind of write access is the desire to enable MM 6.0.1 exactly as that application was previously used in KK and LP. But now I manage to get this kind of access.

I've done this procedure but under no circumstances gives access to writing.

[GUIDE] Titanium Backup Move app data 2 sd

Hi guys,
Titanium backup is a great root tool. Apart from creating and restoring backups Titanium Backup can also move app data to sd.
[ ROOT REQUIRED ]
I tried it and faced a few problems.
"NO DATA 2 SD DIRECTORY DETECTED"
After searching for answers and not getting any i decided to create a answer my self.
So this is a step by step method to move app data to sd using Titanium Backup
(BASICALLY FOR NOOBS BUT OTHERS CAN PARTICIPATE TOO)..
1. Root your device following the tutorial for your device
2. Create 2 Ext Partition (if you have already done so please move to no. 3)
a. switch of your device and take out your sd card.
b. use a card reader to plug it in your pc ( DO NOT USE YOUR DEVICE TO ACCESS THE CARD)
c. download Mini Tool Partition Wizard
d. create to ext 2 or 3 or 4 partition..Make sure the partition are primary and not logical and the partition size b/w 1GB to 2GB
e. After partitioning insert your card in the device and reboot the device.
3. Download Titanium Backup
4. Open Titanium Backup and open the Backup and Restore Tab.
5. select a SINGLE APP and long press.
6. Select "move app data to sd". A popup will open asking to create a data 2 sd directory.
7. Select Yes.
8. Batch select all apps and move app data to sd.
9. Viola see how your internal memory jumps up..
10. Have fun :good:
PS- If anybody finds any error in the guide then please tell me.
PS- Moderators if you find this post has been discussed earlier then please close this thread.
And REMEMBER TO SAY THANKS..
hey

I don't use link2sd..I use a2sdgui..but with whatever knowledge I have I don't think that should affect titanium backup..try reinstalling titanium backup and wiping dalvik cache...
I will try to find an answer as soon a possible..
Try long pressing on a user app like a game or something..

hey mate
sorted it out..
the answer was actually in the titanium backup website in the faq page !
for any1 with the same prob(for CM& based roms):
had to create a folder called "app" in the sd-ext partition
then relaunch titanium backup and then u see the sd-ext part in the home screen of titanium.
in backup/restore long click, as nilot said, long press on an app, now theres an option to move app data to sd !
select and it asks you if you want to create a /data2 folder ! do that, and thats it!
thanks for the help nilot!
S2e works well too

The pro version just unlocks additional functionality in the free version. You have to install the free version as well as the pro version.
EDIT: Anyway, I also can't find the option to move app data to SD. I guess I'd need to create the "apps" folder on my sd-ext partition (although my SD card's 2nd partition is FAT32, would that stop it working?). This would be great if I could figure out how to do it though.

I think you're right, I am using FAT32 because I use Link2SD on stock ROM, and my stock ROM doesn't support ext partitions. It'd be a bit much hassle for me to change things just for this, I'll leave it as it is for now.

i think 2nd partition needs to be ext3 or ext4. theres a guide in this forum how to do that. you need a pc with an sd card reader tho.
after that just follow the steps on this thread
How to add the APP folder
Ok ,, this sounds so noobish, but how can I add the folder 'app' to my 2nd partition of my SD card (which is formatted to EXT4) ...
Can't read the EXT4 folder on the SD card when plugged into the PC, and I've tried using a browser on the phone, but can't see the option where to view the EXT4 partition either ?!
EDIT: Nevermind, changed to a different ROM and S2EXT works fine now
I used NextApp's FX program with the Root Module installed (I'm sure Root Explorer would also work). I then used the "Filesystem Manager" tool and navigated all the way to the bottom looking for "Other Filesystems". I found one named "/data/sdext2" which appears to be my ext2 partition.
I think this may be my problem because I still cannot see the external partition even after adding the "app" folder. I did some digging in TB's FAQ and found the mentioned requirements for Data2SD:
http://www.titaniumtrack.com/kb/titanium-backup-kb/titanium-backup-technical-faq.html#requirements-for-using-move-app-data-to-sd
20. What are the requirements for using the “Move app data to SD card” (Data2SD) feature?
Our Apps2SD scheme creates symbolic links (one per app) at /data/data/com.x.y that will point to somewhere within an ext2/3/4 partition on the SD card.
The supported mount points for the ext2/3/4 partition are:
/system/sd/ (“classic” sd-ext)
/sd-ext/ (“Cyanogen” sd-ext)
/data/sd/ (“MIUI” sd-ext)
So for Data2SD to work, you’ll need to ensure that your ext2/3/4 partition is mounted at one of these locations. Then create an “app” directory at that location in case it doesn’t exist. Once it’s done, you’ll see a free space gauge for it in the Titanium Backup welcome screen, and you can then long-click on an app in the list and hit the “Move app data to SD” button. Once you do that:
First, Titanium Backup will look for existing symbolic links in /data/data/ and attempt to re-use the same target location, if it lies within the ext2/3/4 partition.
If it finds no existing (or no suitable) destination, it will propose to create a “data2″ folder within the ext2/3/4 partition, and will then move the app’s data inside it.
So by default, you’ll get: /data/data/com.x.y => /system/sd/data2/com.x.y (in the “classic” sd-ext case).

I'm guessing that because my partition appears to be mounted at "/data/sdext2" instead of "/data/sd", that this is why TB cannot see it. However, as far as I'm aware, this was created by Link2SD without any intervention on my part. Does anyone know how I might be able to go about changing this? Or could I somehow put in a link to it elsewhere?
Thanks for any help that you can provide!

It seems I have the same problem. I tried to rename the directory using Root Browser Lite (the only free root file manager I was able to find) from "/data/sdext2" to "/data/sd" but the operation failed (I'm not sure but probably the first time I partitioned my SD I called the Ext2 partition labelling it sdext2).
Thanks in advance to anybody who can help me with this issue!

Did you try rebooting the phone or recreating the links after you renamed it?
I've emailed both the developer of Link2SD and support for Titanium Backup. I haven't heard back from anyone at Titanium Backup yet, but the developer of Link2SD was rather informative. He said that the main reason this isn't yet supported is because app private data must maintain the ownership data from the app that it goes to because of the way that Android sandboxes apps. This isn't possible on FAT/FAT32 partitions. Only ext2/3/4 supports it. This is probably why it only works for these filesystems with Titanium Backup.

Edit: I can't locate the ext3 partition via root explorer...does gingerbread not support apps2sd? or is my issue due to the fact that this is a stock GB ROM?

Issues with Titanium Backup to extSdCard (nVidia Shield Tablet)

Hello all!
I'm not sure if this has come up yet with anybody here, and I didn't see a post referencing it. I just rooted my Shield Tablet and
installed Titanium Backup. When I went to the preferences to change the backup folder to my external SD card it told me that
it was read-only and wouldn't allow me to use it at all.
I just want to save anybody else in a similar situation some time. I'm unable to link things currently but all the credit goes to

4. Save the changes to the file.
5. Restart.

I would also add that you must mount the partition as R/W first or you will not be able to save the edit.

I had some issues with the SD card as well. Now that you have root access go to the play store and install SD fix and netapp sd fix. Install them both and run them. I started with netapp SD fix and it said it worked but only certain apps got the right permissions. After i also installed the SD fix (kitkat) Both of them said status of good to go. And now all apps worked with the SD card. Be sure to also use the Root checker app to verify that your root is sticking.
If you have your Shield or Shield Tablet rooted, I would suggest installing Xposed Framework and then installing the "HandleExternalStorage" module. That will give you back read/write access to external storage. I'm able to read/write to my 128GB Micro SD in my Shield and Shield Tablet and to my 64GB card in a memory card reader using an OTG cable with no issues.

Just stumbled upon this post and appreciate the information! Have an S5 and was wondering why I couldn't use my extSDcard for backups. Seems ridiculous to be limited to internal storage... One simple line of code and all is working flawlessly.

unable to write/delete in internal SD storage

I'm unable to delete files or create new ones in my internal storage/sd.
I can read files that are already there.
I'm also able to read/write from a PC
It seems that permissions are not set properly for this partition?
I want to add that this happened after I updated my S4 GT-I9500 to 5.0.1 lollipop (don't really know if it matters) then tried to fix permission to be able to write to external SD card .
after searching the forum for a solution and trying different "fixes", this is what the situation is like:
I can only write/delete when I access (/data/media/0) but not( /sdcard) , (/storage/sdcard0) , (/storage/emulated/0) or (/storage/emulated/legacy). I'm sorry if I'm being kinda noob.
thanks

you don't need to fix permissions or anything of that kind. Lollipop already allows 3rd party apps to write on SD card..
If I was you I'd just wipe everything from recovery and reflash with Odin.

The only reson I did the External storage permission fix is because some apps didn't have access to it, but now all apps have access but not to the internal memory.
I know the most obvious solution is to try to reflash a stock Rom, but I don't currently have my laptop, I'll get it back at the end of the week. So I was looking for an actual troubleshooting/fix?? Plus I kinda want to know what went wrong cuz I want to learn xD
Thanks for trying to help anyway.

FTP server app with SD card access on lollipop

As I understand, lollipop should bring back the write access to SD card for third party apps.
However, the app "Ftp server" still cannot write to the SD card.
I cannot root the device due to company restrictions.

This is exactly mine problem too. I have upgraded to Lollipop in hope to be able to write via FTP Server app to SD card again but it still doesn't work.
Is there another FTP app which can do it?
Also isn't there any other file browser app which can write to SD card (like pre-installed File Commander) ?
Yea, the preinstalled file commander can write to sd. It even have a ftp client.
But I want the other way around.
Have tried a few of the free most popular fpt server apps, but same problem on them all.
Probably/maybe if you make it a system app it'll work. (use Titanium backup for that)
Nvm that's only applicable if you have root, sorry i forgot you can't root...
For those who are interested. FTP server pro has now been updated, and support full access to SD card.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserverpro&hl=en
No dice, FTP server pro only writes to it's proprietary folder, not to SD card in general.
It is working on my Z3 at least. You might have to choose custom folder, then point the custom folder to the SDcard. That is how i have it configured.
That does the trick ! Thanks !!
Custom Folder
LG G4 - I set up the custom folder to be home but I'm still seeing the root (/). If I try to delete or transfer files -- no dice.
Non-rooted phone.
I'm on non-rooted too. Directly after selecting the sdcard as custom folder, I had the option to grant write access as described here:

Well it helps to follow ALL the instructions... this is important:
"Don't navigate down into any subfolder. You must select the top-level root folder of the SD card. This is important."
This FTP-Server worked for me:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.theolivetree.ftpserver
In the settings you can select your root directory, don't select "ext. SDCard" it will only let you write in the apps own folder on the SDCard. Select personalized home directory than android asks you were your root directory should be, select your SDCard and confirm it, this should do the trick.
(Tested on LG G4 - Android 6.0)
Hope it works for everyone ;D .
CyanogenMod 13 + ROOT
Yes, writing to external card seems to work this way.
But deleting from the external card does not work. When trying to delete a file i get the error:
error 450: no permission to delete
Why?

Accessing the SD Card Outside of My Files

Some of you have likely figured this out, but after spending a few minutes poking around ES File Explorer Pro and being unable to locate my 64GB SD card, I finally found the location.
From the root of Device Storage, go to /storage/. Your name will likely vary, but mine was found as /storage/6D31-DA1D.
Having an SD card in my work S5, it was much easier and just required looking for ExtSDCard under /mnt/.

Just to add, the same applies to a SD card attached using an OTG adapter as well. Not as much need to use OTG now except for those times when you just want to transfer something over quickly.

6D31-DA1D looks like the assigned serial number after the card is formatted. If that is true, then everyone will have to look for a different hex number for their card.
BTW is ES File Explorer allowed write access the SD card without root?

First time you try to write to the SD card, you get prompted to follow some steps. From there on, it can write to the card without error. Created a test folder and file on the root to verify.

So I gather that Marshmallow didn't inherit the Lollipop "Apps can't write to SD card" rule. That's good news. I prefer to transfer files from my PC to the phone via WiFi. Never made sense to have to use two file managers to copy files to the SD card.

They are restricted by default, but you can grant them access if they've been updated to know how to properly request it. Google made that change awhile ago, but most apps or OEMs never implemented it.

I don't believe it needs root to achieve this. I've done it before. It's just not working now for whatever reason.

Root Explorer force closes on me upon tapping "select" to write to my SD card. Any input on this would be greatly appreciated.

This happened to me after running Package Disabler, also complete inability to write to SD card with ES, MI, or any other file explorer. Turns out Package Disabler flags External Storage(com.android.externalstorage) as bloatware and I had to make sure I unchecked and enabled it again.
Sent from my SM-G935T using XDA Labs
You can change storage location also

No since the S6 hasn't received the update yet.

Just tested on my phone and got the same FC after tapping SD Card. Root Explorer likely needs an update to resolve it.

I don't think Root Explorer is the issue because no file manager app I've tried allows me to write to the sd card.
