Questions from a previous Nexus user - Mate 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all, I just bought a Huawei Mate 8 phone and so far, it's been an amazing phone.
I bought the Mocha Brown Chinese variant NXT-AL10C00B172, and except for some Chinese apps that I can't understand,
I don't see any major problems yet.
I've been a Nexus user for quite some time now (Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 5),
and this is my first Huawei phone so I'd like to ask if the following are possible:
Google Contacts, Calendar and Reminders sync with the stock Huawei apps
(I read somewhere that you can sync contacts and calendar by downloading some APKs somewhere, but I can't seem to find it)
Adjust volume while on the lockscreen
Change the stock browser's text to English because currently it's in Chinese
Change default apps (when I select Open in Browser from a WebView, the stock browser launches) (EDIT: nvm this, found corresponding setting under Settings > Apps)
Thanks a lot!

I understand that Google services is available on the international ROM.
But is there a solution specific for the Chinese ROM?

funny, i have the exact same background: galaxy nexus, nexus 5 and now mate 8 in mocha brown being my first huawei phone
u can manually download and install google play store, google contacts sync and google calendar sync from online sources such as apkmirror, for example. best would be to convert those to system apps to avoid any notification issues, but for that ull need unlocked bootloader, twrp and root

Thanks now I just need to know if it's possible to adjust the volume from the lockscreen, similar to the Nexus devices.
I'm now starting to experience the notification issue that's affecting, based on what I have researched, a ton of Huawei devices.
I can't receive notifications from Telegram unless I open the app.

it helps to set the affected apps to ignore battery optimizations, left to be kept running when screen is off and to set their notifications as priority ones with system interruption status. u can find all that buried in the settings

thanks again mate! settings are all set. Hope to see some improvements :good: :good: :good:

if none of that helps, then u can also convert the affected apps to system apps, that did it for me with whatsapp

What problems with the non EU version

I'm really interested in this phone but should I wait for the EU version or buy the version they are selling in china
It seems ok frequency wise - https://www.frequencycheck.com/comp...-dual-sim-td-lte-64gb-nxt-al10/united-kingdom
I've seen people pick international English on a menu and it looked all English - is that correct ? - even the non google stuff
Would I have to worry about anything else ?
Any help most appreciated as I want to replace my one plus one that is starting to feel under powered with the amount of tasker stuff I'm running on it
thanks

You do need to check the frequencies as you have done. The Mate 8 has allot of bands covered.
Android OS on Huawei's phones have about every language available. There is some apps on the phone that is in Chinese, but they can be removed, and are for the china market.
Google Apps will not be preloaded, but you will need to download from the Huawei App Store called HiApp. That HiApp app is in mixed Chinese and English, so not everything is translated. After that you have Google Apps, and can download from Google Play that will follow your OS language.
I have had the Honor 6, Honor 6 Plus, Honor 7 and now Mate S, all the Chinese version and they have all been working fine here in Denmark. I have had no problems with network, GPS or WiFi here or on vacation. .
..oh, the change log for OS updates are (mostly) in Chinese

Yes, you do.
It is quite simple: Open HiApp -> Search "Google" -> Click on the Google banner in the top of the search results -> All Google apps is listed, click the download button for each (downwards arrow).
Other than Google Play, you need the Contact sync and Calander sync apps from the list. The rest can be downloaded from Google Play Store afterwords.
I had no troubles with a P8max recently, most sellers out of China will pre-install Google Play for you. My Mate 8 arrives next Monday, can let you know of if it differs any from the P8Max in terms of language difficulties.
Hi,
I bought a Mate 8.
It come with google playstore installed.
I arrived to install all app I want from google playstore.
The only problem I foun, I can't import my contact list, but will be solve for sure.
Two of us have Google contacts sync working, although neither of us is entirely sure how (I was granting permissions/trusted status/open from other apps statuses etc as a batch, so not sure which of those actions allowed for contacts import sorry).
If your google contact can't not sync.
Do you install the google contact sync? you can find it from the "huawei app store".
Install the google contact sync apk, and remove your account, reboot, login your contact again.
It works fine in my mate8 with google contact.
I can use almost all of google service in mate 8 now. (no matter google play, gmail, hangout, contact or anyother)
But, the only problem is that I can't get the location during google map without GPS enable.
Google map can't use cell or wifi to detect where it is, but it work fine with GPS enable.
I have no idea that how to fix it...
After searching the solution from google, it seems I need to root and replace networklocation.apk....
Is there any other method? (I don't know how to root huawei's device...)
I've recieved my mate 8 a week ago, and have had the issues that most of you are talking about.
Assuming the issue is from the battery manager itself; click on the setting icon up left of the screen, you need to switch on (Keep mobile data on when sleeping).
Of course that is in congunction with the rest of the settings/permissions.
Good luck,
Just don't forget to update emui

is it fast and smooth? is the cpu very powerful?
Yes - not had any problems at all.
I'm coming from a one plus one with a few badly writtern tasker profiles (quiet at work, and home nights with auto voice and autovera stuff), 3 mail clients including a touchdown exchange one. It was too much for the one plus but my new mate 8 is still flying.
Problems I have/had
The sync thing - was mashmellow permissions and a restart. (You do not need to wipe and restart.
The app draw - not a problem just a concept change the mate 8 doesn't have one your home screens are your app draw. So its a case of being tidy with folders. But swiping up on the home screen gives you an app search.
Dictionary - wish I could figure out how to copy the words I had stored in my dictionary.
Chinese App store - keeps telling me I have 18 apps that need updating - they don't the are just wanting to change to the chinese version.
Battery life - the one plus would last a day and 1/2 if I forgot to charge it the 1/2 I would start not usjng it, mate 8 will nearly last 2 days (it also gives me stats in ma about what is eating the battery)
Overall its a great phone
M
I've received my mate 8 one week ago... And unfortunately I had a rare problem with my notifications (whatsapp, viber, and other apps).
I did trust those apps from the system, and followed the instructions from the huawei guide, but the problem still.
So anybody have any idea how to solve this problem.
Thanks
Hi, i want to buy a Mate 8 but I'm not sure for the sync problem for google. what type of problem you have?
it is a great phone but unfortuantely I have the same problem with the google sync as well as not getting any notifications. Please help!
didnt someone mention that putting the phone into performance mode solved this?
Tried it hasn't worked for me
Location Services are not working unless you activate GPS - AL10 model;
Any solutions?
yeah, several other users already reported that energy-saving location services somehow dont seem to work...unless u switch to high-performance mode @gps
Hey guys, I am trying to login to Huawei services and I always get the message "due to service location restrictions the system is unable to provide services to you".
Does anyone knows how to bypass that?

Making sure - what are the current bugs in the phone?

Is the notification issue gone? (whatsapp notifications on lockscreen)
Will I be able to use google sync?
(I'm talking about NXT-A10)
are there any more bugs I need to know? I'm planning on purchasing it today, please let me know.
Thanks.
???
1) depends on the firmware and your settings. in some cases it works, in others it doesnt.
2) yes, but on AL10 ull need to manually install play store, gapps and google services
3) not as far as im concerned, im as happy as can be, best phone ive ever had

[Q] AL-00 Chinese model [GMS & Latest firmware]

Ok... It might be repetitive, I come from the LG / Sammy world, so I am new to the Huawei universe...
I've been reading through a lot of threads, like a lot hahaha, I just want to get one last confirmation before I order it (still not sure if I'm gonna get the L29 or L00, although the 6gb/128 is really interesting to me) .
I know people like @duraaraa are working hard to get us something rolling! And thanks for that! I know some other devs (from other phones) are wanting to jump into this pool, so this could become and interesting devs device in the very close future.
But I have some questions, or more like confirmations to ask:
Huawei now really "unofficially" released the GMS for the Chinese / Hong-Kong version of the m9 (4gb/32, 4gb/64, 6gb/128 and 6gb/256). For the users on the AL00, can you please confirm the following :
- you have a 100% English rom or other mulingual possibility (meaning no trace of Chinese writing or other, except maybe some Chinese apps)
- Google playstore, all apps are installable (swiftkey, nova launcher, etc..) and are working 100%
- push services (Gmail, exchange, etc..) are working 100%
- auto sync services (Dropbox, Google photos, etc...) are syncing with no issues
- that you are on the latest firmware and you think now that updates will bring no issues in the future
- do you really see a big difference with the extra 2gb of Ram or is it placebo
- if you do have issues, please tell me
- last but not least :which of the 2 you think will have more development? AL 29 or AL 00
- you have a 100% English rom or other mulingual possibility (meaning no trace of Chinese writing or other, except maybe some Chinese apps)
Yes. No Chinese writing except in Chinese apps.
- Google playstore, all apps are installable (swiftkey, nova launcher, etc..) and are working 100%
I don't have nova launcher, but swiftkey works. Everything is installable.
- push services (Gmail, exchange, etc..) are working 100%
Yes.
- auto sync services (Dropbox, Google photos, etc...) are syncing with no issues
Yes.
- that you are on the latest firmware and you think now that updates will bring no issues in the future
Yes, but without unlocking the bootloader you will only be able to install updates that Huawei wants you to install. Ergo, no betas.
- do you really see a big difference with the extra 2gb of Ram or is it placebo
How would I know? I only have 6GB version. It probably only matters if you use all the RAM.
- if you do have issues, please tell me
Screen touch responsiveness is not as good as other phones. Huawei has been adjusting it a lot from build to build. Hopefully they get it right soon.
- last but not least :which of the 2 you think will have more development? AL 29 or AL 00
With an unlocked bootloader, development will be the same for both. With locked bootloader, you currently have more options with AL00, because that's what I have so that's what I'm working with, and because Huawei has several versions of firmware which can be flashed to AL00, but only one which can be flashed to L29 at the moment. I think Huawei focuses mainly on China, so support of the Chinese phone will be better.
Well, thanks for that quick reply!
Can confirm all Duraaraa said. I got mine, had B109 with working g Google services and I uninstalled all the Google stuff, did OTA to B125. Then it offered B135 OTA so did that. After reboot I stalled GMS and Play store and all good. Had to install Google contacts from APK mirror, and had to go to permission manager and allow Google app as trusted and auto start to get OK Google functionality working but all good now.
Only issue I am having is a few apps won't install. For instance, the CBS watch TV app ... click on install from store and it starts download and the before it finishes store just closes. A couple games do this as well. Working on figuring it out.

@SWBgHz hi, I think to solve your issue with CBS watch TV app go to the play store app permission and make sure Storage have that permission on.
I got mine last Friday nice phone, software is really bad.
After i got everything working on mine. now play store will not work ...keep downloading. i did try everything and still not working.
I have few apps needs update , it is just downloading
I can not get notification from any app
it seems that i will have to factory reset.
I think you guys should download HI suit for back up and restore .
waiting for a better Rom.
Edit: Play store start behave normal again and its working fine.
still can not see notification from my major apps like gmail...etc
I had already tried adding additional permissions as well as setting Play store as trusted app but no joy. Just a few apps do same as CBS on, store closes during download phase.

Make sure that Play Store has Storage permissions. That should fix your problem.

Investigation MHL-ALOOCOO (only Chinese version) social media notification issue

Hi to all users of Mate 9 MHL-AL00C00 (only Chinese version)
I'm starting this thread to investigate the problem with notifications in Chinese version of Mate 9.
As far as I know Europe & International version after B126 update solve the problem but for as, users of Chinese version in Europe etc, the only way to make it work for the moment is to lock those apps that we want notified in recent list.
So if you own a Chinese MHL-ALOOCOO Mate 9 and you want to share your founds & thoughts you can write it here
hi I just received my mate 9 with same version as you, I will let you know if I experience the same problem
not only social media, actually all app except QQ and wechat all other applications have notification problem. phone manager will kill all other apps doesn't matter what kind setting you did.
Better off Chinese version ROM.And online yellow page ..........
There is an option can't remember where in Chinese firmware,it say automatic give permission and restrictions for installed applications, maybe disable this option and remove the application that is not getting notifications and install again.
Maybe think i saw it in phone manager settings.
I confirm that the problem remains. I have the latest update MHA-AL00C00B167 and installed from HiApp the latest version of whatsapp v2.17.60.
I tried all suggestions related to notifications settings, battery optimization, lock screen..., but I receive the notifications only when I open the app. This holds both for WiFi and 4G.
However, my Gmail notifications work properly, so I tried to do some reverse engineering to see what could be the difference. My current finding is that the reason is the phone manager, and specifically the auto-launch/secondary launch management.
Gmail works if you allow both google play services and gmail. However, even if you allow whatsapp, the phone manager apparently ignores it. To verify this, if you restart the phone, you will see that the secondary launch is disabled again for whatsapp, and a record of restricted launch is present in the list you can find in secondary launch management/secondary launch records.
Anyway, I think we have to wait for a new update that will solve this.

Huawei is responsible for that mess up with notifications...
This is the 2nd Mate that screwed up... (1st was mate 8)
It takes about 3 months to get fix it in mate 8 and now again the same issue in Mate 9....ok European & International versions have fixed but what about chinice version.... How many updates we have to wait until they fix it....
Or they sending as straight to debrand to Europe or international version.... That's too annoying!
I will wait until next update... After that I have to debrand....

Step counter disappeared from notification area

I got the nougat update last week, but since then my step counter disappeared from the notification area.
It's still running in the background, steps are counted. I can click on the health icon in the drawer and it pops up, but I liked it better in the pull down notification menu... Tried to find a setting on how to switch that back on, but to no avail... Has anybody found the switch yet? (B563)

Hi,
I use Huawei health app frequently.
You have to change the options in two places
Please check the screenshots.
Those are the two options that will give the steps in notification area.
Another thing to note is the Huawei health app version.
Only this version that you see in screenshot gives the steps in notification area. I saw another health app version and it doesn't give that option. Not sure why.
Hope this resolves your problem.
You're so right! It's the version of the health app.... I still have the 1.1.1.311x, never thought anything of it, since it worked nicely until Nougat.
But now the problem, how to get your V2.0.2 version? Health doesn't show for me in the Playstore... And a forum search here in xda only came up with dead links.
Do you remember where you got it - or better - have a link for the apk?
Thanks man!!

Yes I have the app.
Don't worry about the below steps. Please find the apk file in attachment.
Go to aptoide.com
Install the aptoide app
Then add my store
Samavb.store.aptoide.com
In my store under latest apps you will find this version of Huawei health.
Link to this app is https://samavb.store.aptoide.com/app/market/com.huawei.health/20002309/24448697/HuaweiHealth
But you need the aptoide app installed first to download this app.
Even though it might sound complicated, this is the very easy.
Aptoide is an excellent app store.
Any one can create a store there. You can too once you know more.
You can not only install any app but you can also upload any app to your personal store after you create it.
Good luck. Hope you find this information useful.:good::good::good:
Thanks man! I downloaded the version now and it's working again, awesome! What I was wondering though, that you have newer versions for 25 of apps I have also, even though I only see 3 apps, which I deliberately didn't update. The rest is all updated via Playstore... How come? Did you modify those in any way?
Also my Huawei Health 2.x app is now 62MB instead of 14MB....or even 96 MB in memory... Also my settings page looks a bit different than yours, even though it's same version now... Weird...
Hmmm!

Glad to know you are happy.
Unfortunately, I am not a developer and I do not know how to modify these apps in anyway. I am an IT guy (Windows Administration, Networking, Telecom & Android troubleshooting) who loves solving problems and helping people in making their experience with the phones, tablets and computers better.
Aptoide.com is huge. I follow the two official stores which seem to be the main source for all the new versions most of the time. If I find newer versions for my apps I update them provided they are from a trusted source - you get the green tick mark when you update from trusted source otherwise Huawei will warn you that it is not from trusted source and asks you to understand the risks while installing.
So after I update them I upload them using aptoide backup app. That is how I try to keep my store up to date with newer versions.
Beauty of aptoide is everyone can create their own personal store and share it with everyone. You don't have to save the apks any more on sdcard. Everything is there on aptoide in your store. When you install a new ROM you can install the apps from aptoide from your personal store. You can also tweet about it. These tweets are automatic. You can have a look and see if it interests you. My sincere advice, please do not update the core system apps using aptoide. It might create conflict or mess up. Update only those apps which can be uninstalled if you don't like it after using. I use Google play store, Aptoide and XDA for installing apps. If I find the app I am looking for in all the three places, then I pick the most stable and latest from the 3 stores.
I didn't notice the size difference in this app until you told me. Good observation. I do not know why there is such a huge difference. Even the apk I shared in my previous post is 16mb.
I tried to find the apk from the stock firmware B577 but I couldn't find it. The update_data zip file had selective apks which didn't have the Huawei health which is strange. When I was experimenting last week with rooting, I was flashing NXT-AL10 firmwares to see if it is better than NXT-L29. In the end I settled on KangVIP B577 on top of L29C432B560. It was during that time that I saved this Huawei Health app using aptoide. That is why I was able to share it with you quickly.
Thank you for reading this long post. Hope you found this information useful. :good::good::good::good:
Yeah, I was just wondering, but I also thought of different versions, like beta or so... Just weird sometimes with those 3rd party stores, developers and apps... But I also saw the green tick mark and nothing changed in the permissions and its working like it supposed to do now... So for now I'm happy and thanks again for your effort and help!
