TWRP install question..I'm on 4.4.2, Rooted, Unlocked

Ok, so I'm just looking for final confirmation before I install my TWRP2710-RAZR-HD_M-KITKAT image...going to just fastboot flash it on there using the files in my Motopocalypse folder, but do I need to rename some file in the system folder or something before I do this? Seems like I had to do that in the JB era and I can't find much for the KK version. Noob question I know. Do I just put my phone in fastboot mode and flash away or is there a step prior to that? Thanks in advance.

Not sure why you think you have to rename something to flash a new recovery. Yeah, maybe the instructions had you rename the recovery image file or something, but no. Just flash it per the instructions the previous poster linked to. It's really that simple.

The only thing about Flashify that I don't like is you need to be already rooted.
Otherwise, if you're not rooted, then you can't root until you put on a custom recovery, which means you need to use fastboot to flash CWM or TWRP and then sideload root. Then you'd be able to flash TWRP or CWM. Kind of the chicken and the egg conundrum.
Everyone should know how to do it via fastboot because you may not have root to install TWRP or any other custom recovery. It's always good to know how to do things from the command line because there may come a time when you have no other option.

can i install official cm11 nightlys after flash 2.7 twrp ?

I believe they can only be installed when they update them with the new kitkat bootloader. There are some builds by dhacker29 that I have tried that worked but are in progress. You would need to reflash back to JB bootloader to use the official CM11 nightlies.

i think it is because back in the day, correct me if im wrong, you had to rename the old recovery file so it wouldnt re-install.
but now that development has progressed, that is no longer necessary.
thats why all the, do i need to rename questions are arising.

[Q] updating from 5.0 to 5.0.1 problem

Ok so i'm running lollipop 5.0 with twrp 2.8.3.0 rooted with cf auto root and i want to update to 5.0.1. First what i did i tryed to install ota but it did not start to install when the device resets. So i downloaded factory images for 5.0 and flashed factory recovery via fastboot, now when i download ota and device starts to install it on 1/4 % of progress bar it says error. So what else i need to do to install ota? Or there is not any other way exepct to flash factory image for 5.0.1.

Best option is to download factory image 5.0.1 and flash it with no wipe.

Easiest thing to do would have been flashing the 5.0.1 twrp flashable version of the rom from XDA...

Sorry i did not know that there is a flashable version :/ can you give me the link to it? i will flash back twrp now and flash it like you said.

You can only sideload OTA and OTA doesn't wipe data.

So it's the same way like we flash the factory image/custom ROM. Since the manual wiping doesn't even require, no need for apps backup?! #n008

If you are 100% stock, you can:
- sideload OTA. No wipe
If you have a custom recovery you can
- flash a ROM.zip, without wipe
No matter what state you are:
- flash a factory image, with some modification to not wipe. This can be done by moving the -w from the flash script or individually flashing via fastboot, the system, boot, radio images. Though if you want ota in the future, you'll need to flash bootloader and recovery the same way.
Everything you need is in general > sticky roll-up

This is best explanation as you can get. But for newbies like me, there is also tool, named Wugfresh Root Toolkit. It does exactly what rootSU said above, but for ordinary users in more friendly way.

True but the problem there is that toolkits take away the learning curve for noobs. This means if something goes wrong using the toolkit of even later on, when we try to help, the noob doesnt understand the basic things we're saying.
Sure, it saves noobs time, but it wastes our time later when the noob needs our help (which is unfair and a bit selfish) So we strongly urge noobs to NOT use toolkits.

It makes sense. But there is another truth, too. There aren't so many professionals like you with understanding android enviroment.
For example. I'm steel worker. I know how to weld. But also I know just few basic things about how welding machines works. I do not need exactly know how it works I just need to know how to adjust some of parameters to get better results. Because I have a good welding machine, it is almost impossible to go anything wrong. So for me good Toolkit is like good welding machine.
When I try to install SDK from Google and start with it I just give up after only 10 min. Toolkits works for me since X10. Of course there were many mistakes I've made (and probably will do), but I never bother people for such a situations like "I flash HTC Xspeed kernel on Samsung device - my gosh, please help". There are also unpredictable situations. I hate that with Titanium Backup and its /storage folder most. But the beauty of android system is that you can't do anything wrong. If you have somekind of backups you can allways start fresh. And that is the best school for everybody.

You don't need the SDK. Its worth reading the stickies. The problem is when someone uses a toolkit and doesn't know how to use fastboot and we have to explain everything to them whilst panicking. Its easier to learn fastboot first.
Of course you must feel free to use toolkits yourself but many of us will say what I have said today if you recommend it.
Fastboot is not knowing how it works. Fastboot is the same knowledge you have as your welding machine. Developing would be more than you know than your welding machine.

installed CM12 and lost root and recovery

Hi chaps, yesterday I had an update (CM12) on my rooted OPO and after having done the update I lost root (which I knew I would have anyway) but, surprisingly I also lost TWRP, which is rather unusual. So now, my question is, do I have to go through the whole rooting procedure again as detailed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2788632 (procedure which, incidentally, I followed the first time I rooted my phone last year) or if not, what should I do? What steps should I skip?

See this thread, someone with a similar problem, pretty easy to sort if you're near a PC. Just remember to boot back into recovery, before rebooting fully and also turn off the 'update cyanogen recovery' option under developer options.

You just need to flash a custom recovery via fastboot or using a PC tool. You can then flash a superSU zip to get root.

Please help me! Cant install any ROM on my OnePlus!

Hi Everyone!
Because of having issues i can´t fix on my OnePlus, i´m finally asking for some professional help here, as it´s getting more and more complicated and i don´t want to ruin my phone.
What was my plan?
Installing CM11S 44S on my OPO, which had the 05Q Version as factory setting.
Also i wanted to install a franco kernel.
I hoped, if i do both steps successfully, my OPO will have a good battery life (44S seemed to be the most efficient version, according to some forums).
What did i do so far?
First i set up an adb backup for my data, but not for the OS. However, i installed SDK plus tools and drivers.
Next step was installing a new recovery, which is able to flash a new version of CM11S, so i set up TWRP with fastboot, which means my device is "unlocked" now.
Everything worked well so far, i also made an backup in TWRP.
The problem:
I wanted to reboot my OPO at some point and TWRP asked me for rooting my device. Accidentally i swiped over so it started rooting process, but i didn´t want to root it, so i immediately shut the device down.
By now TWRP recovery/fastboot is working, but my OS 05Q is lost and i can´t install a new ROM because im getting the Report:

Checking for MD5 file...
Skipping MD5 check; no MD5 file found
Error flashing zip /<path to .zip file>
--
Can anyone help me to get 05Q back or the 44S with the franco kernel?
I know there might be some other threads that deal with similar problems, but actually none of them helped me so far. For example: do i need a fastboot image or signed flashable zips (which i have)? In which order do i install the kernel and the ROM?
Some Information:
I can access my device via fastboot and my OPO is also shown as a adb device on my MAC.
When starting in TWRP, i can also access the device in USB Mode, transfering files is also possible.
I´m not really competent with android modding or programming, so i will need some noob-friendly answers, but i bet you guys know how to help me out here.

I found out how to place a md5 file to the referring version, but it still sais: MD5 does not match.
I´m so done with it right now that i wish i had my OPO back as it was few days ago.

Well, i cant really help here as i have not face this problem but ur mistake was that u Immediately shut the device down the moment it was installing root. It may have corrupted the partitions of the phone and left it at that state, so maybe restoring the partitions of that section may help. Like i said im not knowledgeable about this

Agreed, you shouldn't have shut down the phone while it was modifying a partition. The root wouldn't have mattered anyway because you were about to overwrite the system partition by flashing a ROM. Go to my guide thread and look at section 8 to flash the stock images for the build you desire:

Yes you can still use fastboot on a Mac, but you'll need to Google how to set it up on a Mac first.

Got stuck at step 2: It Terminal said error: cannot determine image filename for sbl1.mbn - although the name is correct and the file is in the correct folder :/

I'm a little confused as to what ROM will or will not work. I see a few ROMS worth trying, but there install instructions reference a different Bootloader multiple flashes such as SuperSU or gapps.
Whats the best fool proof method to flash a new ROM with what I have and are there any simple one file ROM/ZIP/ Blob etc.. file that would do what I want?

Thanks. As simple as the process was, as a noob (first time attempting this) I was really concerned about screwing this up and bricking my tablet.
The one you linked to was one of the ones I was considering and hence my question regarding what works with what I have already done. The noob mind (mine anyways) finds a dozen questions at every turn. In this case I would ask the following:
Q-Do I have to use Kang TWRP?
Q-How is it different than the TWRP I used on my Tablet?
Q-Will I need to constantly change TWRP versions depending on what ROM I want to use?
Q-Is there a danger to switching TWRPs?
Q-Doesn't flashing SuperSU after I flash Gapps overright and erase SuperSU or is there some unique way to flash (push?) both at the same time?
Q-Many more I'm sure!
To the noob, almost all the instructions I read appear to be written for someone who as done this many times. The level of detail needed for the novice is just not there or lost between the jargon used, with many steps not fleshed out because the author assumes a certain level of expertise.
I will definitely read these threads as best I can, but in the interim, is there any ROM that are known to be able to be flashed via the TWRP I currently have? The author of the version I used certainly made it seem like it was that simple, load the ROM/ zip file onto the MicroSD card and when in Custom recovery simply use the INSTALL feature to navigate to the file and press a button to flash and ..."BAM!!" you are running a new ROM.

That version of KANG appears to be dead, as the thread has been closed and abondoned by the OP. So no new questions or help there....
Can I install that version over the top of my current version of TWRP the same way I did the first time? (change file to TWRP.blob etc.)

Yes you can.
However Kang TWRP is a xxx.img file. You also can use your current TWRP and flash the image file. Attached you will find an image and a zip version.

Ok, so if I read your comment correctly, I can copy the .img file to an SD card, boot into recovery and flash it from there OR I can fire up fastboot and the same steps I originally did to install custom recovery from my PC to accomplish the same thing... either way I should still have custom recovery, but with the KANG version. Right?

Well crap. I put the .img file on my SD card and boot the tablet into recovery, I flashed the .img file to the rovery not boot partition. All appeared well....but when I go back to see if I have KANG recovery, it hangs anbd says Booting Failure Unrecoverable bootloader error (0x000000000)
EDIT: After I cleaned my pants, I used abd and fastboot to flash the original Blob file using my PC. This restored the custom recovery. I was freaking out for a few minutes.
I didn't change the file name of the kang .img file. Should I have done something different?
EDIT: Successful recovery to Kang2.8.7.2 !! :good::good: I used adb and my PC to send the .img file (renamed "twrpkang.img" for simplicity) and it worked great. I'm a pro..:silly:

Not sure what I did wrong. I tried to do it within the old recovery menu and it hosed it. It found the file and mounted it successfully, but it seemed weird to be within the partition I was overwriting and writing to it. Kind of like you cant install windows while your using Windows...
The new version is much smoother.... Thanks, not to learn about this gapps super SU and how to flash all of these and in what order along with the ROM..as well as this wipe vs format thing...so confusing...
