Thanks to the senior members who are helping me to get around the XDA site. I will get the hang of it
At the beginning of the week I had posted this thread in the XDA-Assist section and I am now starting it here. I am not sure if my old post was moved to here or not so here goes. If this is a duplicate I am sorry.
Thanks
"I recently bought this tablet from Amazon and I've been scouring the net looking for root solutions. Ive tried most of the popular one-click tools without any success. Here is what I did learn, this tablet has a mediatek MT8127 chipset, running stock Android 5.0.1 on a 3.10.54 kernel. The build number is ALPS.KK1.MP10.V 1.18. Ubuntu 14.04 recognized my tablet only after updating 51-android udev rules. I was finally able to execute adb shell successfully. I was able to reboot into fastboot, but not able to unlock it. Some interesting information that I learned along the way....when I plug my tablet into my PC it's seen as a MT65xx Android device, but when it's in fastboot my PC sees it as a HTC device. I had to update adb_usb.ini to recognize both a mediatek and a HTC device in order to reboot through my Linux command line. I contacted Hipstreet customer service and ask for any information that they would be willing to impart to me, but they weren't much help. I haven't tried building any cwm as of yet since my bootloader is still locked. Any help would be great. Any progress that I make I would love to share. If more information is needed about this tablet just reply and I will do my best.
Thanks,
MitMat"

Hey guys,
I was looking for a tutorial and a description about what is a recovery.img and if there is always the need to root any Android or Smartphone (even if it comes with Ubuntu mobile OS) to install a custom ROM.
My second question is about the Super User Apps:
I always see tutorials in which, after flashing the recovery.img they say we need to install a, i.e., CWM_SuperSU_xxx.zip. I do not know why to do that if I have my phone rooted and all I need to do is to boot it and go to the Play Store and install the latest SuperSU app by ChainFire, i.e.
All these questions have a single porpuse: To know what I am doing, because I do not like to perform tasks as an robot. I have a brain that loves to know and learn and be aware of what its doing.
Thank you very much for your help. Maybe you could point me to the documents I need to read to now all these questions.
By the way:
I rooted a year ago my HTC One-V and installed a Custom ROM before and It was working perfect until somebody stolen it from me.
My device now is a Samsung Galaxy GT-i9300. I am from PerĂº, and my Service Provider is Claro.
I use Ubuntu 14.04 and 12.04 and I have installed Heindall from the Ubuntu repositories. Until now I just read tutorials of how to root my phone, but I do not want to perform tasks without knowing what are them for.
So I want to wait before rooting my GT-i9300 until I know what I am really doing with my phone.
Thank you in advance!
Regarding Rooting, Please see [Q] What is rooting? Particularly #7
When it comes to Recovery, See XDA Wiki. Also See XDA University for Android Flashing Guide.
If your Device comes with Linux, then you should not use Android Rooting programs unless advised to do so. Weather Device Recovery works with Linux or not depends on Case by case basis.
In case of additional questions, please post in Android General
My device is a very popular one, a GS3 GT-i9300. It is an Android phone.
My PC, where I am going to connect my phone to root it that has Ubuntu Linux 14.04 and 12.04 installed.
Maybe you miss understood what I wrote.

So if I want to use CWM Recovery, then I can look for the latest version? Or there is a special version for my phone. Afaik it is exactly like my PC when I install a dual boot with Windows. The bootloader (maybe Grub2) is like the Samnsung bootloader and Recovery and my Android are like Ubuntu and Windows dual booting. Is that right?
And hence I do not need a special CWM Recovery for my phone, it should be a simple recovery.img installer but versions differs in features and installed programs. Is that correct? And I just can look for the latest one.

Thank you very much @Perseus71
Your links are very useful for my purpose.

So...
In simple words, it is like my PC.
I inicially have a single OS, Android. Maybe a Recovery but installed by the manufacturer.
Then if I install a Custom Recovery, it is like creating a dual boot: Android and Recovery.
Then if I install a ROM it is like removing a Linux distribution in my PC and installing a new one.
Recovery gives me some tools like backup my personal settings and data and even my apps.
In those terms, there should be ways to install dual boot Android and Ubuntu Touch? Or which ever ROMs in dual boot?
Mauricio Mora
If you want to install CWM, please visit [RECOVERY] ClockworkMod Touch 6.0.3.2 for GT-I9300
Mind you that is for GSM Phone only.
Yes Bootloader = Grub but Linux/ubuntu do not have a concept of Recovery in traditional android sense. In that wany Grub does do the job of a recovery. You may want to google for "What is Android Recovery ?"
If you still have continued questions, please post them in Galaxy S III General forum.

The mission of XDA Assist is to provide basic help to those who have tried searching but can't find what they are looking for and need assistance. This is not a "helpdesk" providing technical assistance but more to point you in the correct direction with your problem. Perhaps you can't find posts on how to root your phone, install custom recovery or maybe you have questions about how to navigate and use features on the site.

I've been searching for info specifically for rooting/CWM'ing/ROM'ing this phone for a couple of weeks now and this device seems to be the bastard child of the Android world. If I owned a ZTE Blade I would be fine already. I know that help for this device exists somewhere, but using the XDA search tool doesn't pull up anything. I've searched for "Supreme", "Vital", "Quantum", ZTE in general, etc, etc, and the only thing that comes up is the LG Quantum which is obviously no help at all. And it seems that none of the other Android "help" sites have any better luck with specific information for this device (it's always a "this works for most devices, but your mileage may vary" kind of thing).
Basically I broke my phone from Virgin Mobile, bought a cheap used one in good condition off of eBay, but unfortunately the new one is tied to Sprint. Doing an ADB backup/restore from one device to the other does not copy over any of the carrier information so that was no help. It appears that this info would be copied over with a Nandriod backup, but I can't do this until I install CWM. I can't use ROM Manager to flash in a CWM image because this is not a "supported" device. I've tried using fastboot but it just waits forever for the device to connect whether I have the ZTE or Google USB drivers installed. I've tried flash_image but it throws an error saying the recovery partition was not found. I've tried just about every solution I can find any hint of anywhere online and I'm at the end of my rope. The only good news is that I was at least able to root my device using KingRoot! It's everything after that which has been the problem... I'm hoping somebody here can point out a link to a GOOD source for exactly how to at least load CWM for this specific device so I can get Nandroid going. Ordinarily I wouldn't mind experimenting with building this from source myself, and I'm sorry for taking the lazy approach and asking for somebody else to do the grunt work, but I work 12-16 hours a day and just don't have the brainpower available to deal with this right now. I just want my phone back!
As a second item, I would very much like at some point to play with loading Lollipop on this device. I've found a link which on the surface seems to have good info, but then when you try to download the image they hold the data hostage and expect you to "complete these dozen offers". NO, I'm not going to give them all of my personal info, and I'm also not going to jump through their bs marketing hoops. But anyway, this is entirely secondary to getting my replacement phone up and running. The link to this info I found is:
cwm-twrp-recovery.org/2015/03/zte-vital-n9810-5511.html
Copious thanks in advance for helping me to keep my sanity!
Hi
Thanks for writing to us at XDA Assist. I can't find anything relating to your question on XDA, please ask your question here:

Hey everyone -
The title says it all! Reading, searching, and experimenting for hours... no dice. Time to ask for help.
I'm trying to unlock the bootloader of my Shield Tablet, but no matter what I do, I can't install the Universal Naked Driver (which I understand to be step #1). I've tried to troubleshoot this to no avail (including turning off driver signature verification, etc.)... Windows 10 refuses to do it, complaining that "Windows was unable to install your Shield Tablet. Windows could no find driver software for your device".
I'm posting this question *here*, because it makes me wonder if something has changed in the last firmware update from Nvidia (I'm running the very latest - LMY48C.35398_567.2193)... so here's my question: has anyone out there tried to root (which requires bootloader unlock) a Shield Tablet with this firmware? If you've been successful, could you point me toward a tutorial I haven't yet read? Thank you!
I think your first issue would be installing the wrong drivers. Install the actual nVidia Shield Family drivers from the gameworks download centre. Next, make sure to try a few different adb versions. Not all of them are identical, and you might have better results with one but not another.
Good luck!

You just fixed me up with this piece of advice!
Really appreciate it... thanks for taking the time.
Great! Glad it worked
i have looked around here and thought i saw some relevant threads in the past but for the life of me I cannot find them again...not a good start!
sorry for the newbie question but my windows phone is on 8.0 and painful to use in a lot of basic ways and i have had difficulty updating it (here in Thailand with no Samsung support at all) i have given up and decided to make it android (if possible) so i can use it. I don't have regular computer access so i rely on my phone for reading and listening to files
I have some computer skills but no programming, so this forum is intimidating ... but interesting ... i found some cool codes to enter into a diagnostics app - but cant find that thread again either!).
in addition to an android custom rom and anything else i might need (bootloader?) i hope there is some clear instructions and ideally a video talking about 'rooting' and loading custom ROMs. i assume that means just downloading the file and plugging the phone into the usb port of the computer.
anyway i appreciate any advice (and time) someone takes to reply to this newbie.
cheers

You can read about Android bootloader for your device here: [R&D] Android bootloader on ATIV S by greenboxal.
But for further questions, best to ask in the Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting forum.
Haven't found any android ROM for your device ... maybe you can be the first to "cook" it.
Good luck!

here is my problem, I work as a sysadmin however my knowledge of Linux (android) is sort of limited compared to windows.
I recently was brought an ACER Iconia B1-720 which has gotten infected with a seemingly vey harsh strain of virus, it keeps popping up lock screens, and if the tablet connects to internet the AD spam is massive.
trying to do a factory reset, didn't help, nor a hard reset since after the initial setup all the infected software is there.
also the USB debugging option is nowhere to be seen on the settings menu, and APPs don't have the uninstall button, thus after taking into consideration all this, I have gotten to the conclusion my best bet is to sideload from the PC into the tablet a recovery firmware using ADB, however ADB is not recognizing the tablet when I type "adb devices" and thus I m left at a lost of what should I do to recover this tablet into working condition.
can someone please advice me on what to do? or how I could restore the tablet? is there any sort of command line or software I could install in the tablet to manage and clean it manually?
I managed to disable most of the crapware and make the table usable WITHOUT internet connection, so I m assuming I can use the SD card to load some app into it to fix it manually, what app could I use?
Hello,
Welcome to XDA.
Try looking through this thread and posting your question there, if it won't let you post it will be because you need to make 10 posts before you can post in a development thread. You need your stock firmware if it is in that thread among the variants of your model.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/general/acer-ax-b1-t2875894
To get your 10 posts in you can go to one of the Off-Topic(OT) Forum linked below. Choose one the threads there to make your 10 posts then go post your issue in the first thread I linked you to.
Remember to register an XDA account so you can post and reply in the forums. Good luck.
