Hello all,
Recently i dropped my phone probably around 20 times in a single day. the glass got cracked deeply in the bottom right corner, only the grey portion were it has the lg logo is affected, its not even close to the actual lcd screen.
so, while the display and the touch both work absolutely fine, there is a box that takes up about 1/16th of the screen, which displays the entire screen in the same scale. if i rotate the phone sideways, then the box flips sideways. i can also drag the box to any part of the screen i like. i would post a screenshot, however it appears that i "cannot take screenshots".
I'm assuming this has to be a feature to help people who's phones have cracked screens, but i cannot find any information about it at all.
Is anyone familiar with this?

Your phone does not know if it's screen is cracked or not ;p.
It's a setting that's been enabled which is for accessibility , one handed mode, or something to that effect

yeah i've checked both of them but there's nothing in accessibility or one handed mode about this feature. i might be able to post a picture of this in an hour or two.

It's called mini view. It's when you scroll across back, home, recent.

This seems close, however still not the same feature, I tried using mini view and nothing happened.
Here are some visuals

bumping for more help,
small update, if i double tap the box and drag to the top left i can make it a little bit smaller, opposite direction makes it larger.

Just perform a factory reset if it goes away then it was definitely something that got enabled in settings or an app running.
You can enable a simulated secondary display in Developer Options. Check to see if another box is ticked instead of the "None" option

i was wondering if there's a lockscreen app that just shows your current home but non responsive til you tap your screen a preset number of times that way you can still see your android homescreen so you don't have to unlock it to see your live widgets and maybe to add some eye-candy to it the taps could crack the glass at the point where you touched the screen the final tap that unlocks it could shatter the glass and restore responsiveness to the device...sort of a "break glass in case of emergency" feel to it. can this be done? If yes, how hard would it be and does anybody else think this is a good idea? And lastly does anybody wanna take a crack at it?
Hah that'd be pretty cool... Mainly for showing off
maybe an interested app dev will see this post i would love to see this on a device and not just in my head
Something like that would totally rock. Although, I'm afraid you could still unlock the phone accidentally if it were in your pocket. I know the screen can register a touch through thin fabric, of which a lot of pockets are made of. Maybe make it quadrant based. Two taps in the upper left and one tap in the lower right or something along those lines. Don't even have to have lines on the screen or anything like that to differentiate the quadrants, just a fuzzy logic system that can figure out what your trying to do.

Interesting!
Along that same idea ...
Maybe a re-skin of the Lock Pattern currently utilized in Android.
It could, under some setting, take a screen shot of the home screen.and when the device is locked, display that screen shot.
Your idea of the invisible quadrants could be expanded to equal a 3 by 3, or a 4 by 4 square, instead of dots. And it could be set to recognize taps or swypes.

That may work, but I think it may start to get a little too complicated then. My thinking is that if you have three or even four sections wide/tall, it may be much more difficult to hit a particular area, that's assuming there are no visible dividing lines. Invisible quadrants would be much easier to tap and swipe without worrying your not hitting the correct area.

I hope some developer is reading this
These little random ideas for apps never really happen, it is rare that anyone actually fulfils the wishful thinking of random users. I would be heavily surprised if this is actually carried through with.
Fantastic idea, though. If you ignore the negative, with the right effects and work this could be quite good.
This is something I noticed. When scrolling through text or whatever, the bottom row of pixels is messed up. Scroll so some text is against the bottom of the screen. Hard to explain... I'll try and put a picture later.
Anyone else have this?
Not really a big deal, just bored at work...

the only thing i've experienced is a short blip at the "samsung" logo before the phone boots up.. and it looks like static on a television that doesnt have reception.. just tv snow/fuzz at the top 1/3 of the screen for a split second, then back to full black. it only happened once.
Yeah, I've been experiencing the same thing since day 1. It looks like the very bottom row of pixels is offset or blurred a bit.
yeah i see it. they look like elongated pixels. stretched out in other words...
I have noticed this, I feel like it's an intended feature.
Good to know it's not just this phone, then.
It's odd, really.
Sent from my Infuse 4G
I noticed this several days ago. To be more precise the last row (in portrait orientation) is a duplicate of the second to last row. This happens all the time, no matter which app or orientation. I think this is probably a defect in the display driver or something of that sort. Hopefully it will be fixed some time.
lol, a feature
i just looked at this and it does do it. just cut some text or an image off and its blurry. i tried to get a screenshot of it, but its not in the screenshot so its the actual hardware. interesting...
Lol never noticed it before but it is there even when browsing the web. It is barely noticeable, nothing serious.
Hi, guys, have you noticed that if the right side of the sliding mechanism is slightly nudged, the display lights up? Here is a video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNQ1nK3cutY
When answering, please share what phone and keyboard layout do you have.
Same problem with me.. (link)
Personally, I don't like the capacitive buttons.. and I'm becoming increasingly annoyed with the search button!
Also, I don't know if anyone else has this problem..
If my keyboard is slightly moved/nudged, it wakes the phone up. See video..

Well, that's not a big problem, even if the phone is waked up, it's still locked and goes to sleep again in 3-4 seconds.
This is weird!
Mine's display light up after I slide it past the bottom keyboard row, it can stay locked while I can clearly see the spacebar!
How can the same device act differently like that? mine is a 7 Pro (not an Arrive), and I can see from your video that yours is a 7 Pro too.

If I push the sliding mechanism evenly, with two fingers, mine also lights up after the first row of the keyboard, just like yours. But try to push only the right side...
The screen is triggered based on a magnet I believe. So the amount that the screen must be moved to trigger the screen to come on isn't a precise thing.
Doesn't happen on my Arrive.
Hey, folks, do your phones light up when you divide the two halves?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yc6zNYu-La8
Please write what phone do you have - HTC Arrive, HTC 7 Pro, QWERTY or QWERTZ kejboard.
Mine doesn't light up if I nudge the right or left side. It also does not light up If split it in half like the above video.
It only lights up when I slide it over the first row of keys.

This is correct.
I don't have the manual for that phone. (it's similar to the mechanism shown for the TyTn however www.mikechannon.net or see here to get the general idea http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2677085&postcount=3 ) HTC tightened their document security and it's almost impossible to get Service Manuals current devices these days.
However, as tiny17 commented, in HTC phones, the sliding keyboard activates "wake-up" by means of a small magnet which is glued onto the inside of the casing. As this moves past the magnet operated switch it wakes up the phone. You will see similar behaviour if you bring a magnet near certain parts of the case and in fact this is a way to locate where the magnet switch is located.
Also, using phone cases that have magnet clasps on them can also operate the switch and wake up the phone when sliding it in and out of the case/pouch.
So technically this is not a fault, but it can be annoying.

Hi, I recently bought an HTC U11 , it's been 10 days and i am facing an issue with the display. Horizontal lines appear when i touch the screen a lot in a short period of time. I am attaching a couple of pictures for reference. It look worse to the naked eye. Is any one else face this issue?
Thanks in advance.
I've had mine for a month and seen this happen three times now, I think. I'll try to get some photos next time. I have no idea what causes it. What do you mean by "touch the screen a lot in a short period of time"?
Mine did this too like 3 times.
I think I noticed it happen after wiping the screen with a cloth ( has got to do with pressure and the attachment of the digitizer with the screen I guess ).
It goes away with some fiddling around, I can RMA it, but I don't want to send it out.
Don't know what to do
You may want to check out this thread HERE. SMH

Like swiping the screen repeatedly in a short period of time.
hey guys, what did you do - i have the same problem after 4 months of use .. never fell down!
same problem here but doesnt bother me , strange to see
I have (unfortunately) grown used to it. I can confirm it's due to rubbing the screen, but I don't need a cloth for it to show up; mine happens from my fingers. It's easily reproducible by quickly and repeatedly swiping upwards on a section of screen. Slowly swiping downwards on an affected section can then remove it.
Here's a photo of the effect across the whole screen. It is much more noticeable than it appears in the image.
I has the same issue too, I talked with the tech support, they said it seems to be a hardware issue and I should send it back for repair.

Interesting that they think it can be repaired. Do let us know how it goes
Reparied
I sent to repair for 2 times. Second I sent picture and video of the problem directly to the repair place, and they changed the LCD panel, and the problem has disappeared. So far so good.

I just notice that this seems affected by humidity. I just tried to exhale and put some moist in the unit screen then rub again while moist and the line disappear (this is during the line is visible). It feels like the coating reacts on the friction. That's what I think of. By the way I'm not using screen protector right now. If its working with screen protector put on, please let me know.
Not even 24 hours. I don't even go pass 40% brightness. The burn in is towards the right corner of the screen next to the notch. It's not image retention because it would have faded away after a couple of minutes. Will be chatting with customer service in a few. I'll let you know the outcome.

Clickbait title is clickbait?
Most likely image retention, not burn in.
white ui must die!!!
I wish that it was clickbait. :crying: Don't really like to go through the whole RMA process again with Google. It's quite hard to snap a picture of it but this one captures it better than the original photo. I played a number of videos for an hour or so to see if it goes away. The image burn is still noticeable.

I think you might have a case of hypersensitivity.. I cannot see the slightest difference across any of the pics you provided
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
That's image retention, not burn-in. Many OLED displays do this. As long as you don't keep the phone at max brightness or still images on the screen for extended periods, this should not be a big issue.
Are you turning "off" the notch by enabling the black area around it? if so, that turns off the pixels and there will be some retention. I believe it is actually the rest of the screen "burning in" as it is being lit up and the area with the pixels being off now looking a bit different.

Damn Google went with a Samsung panel this time on the XL you would think the burn in problem was solved... I'd suggest running an app to fix that there are a few on the play store... Could help
Can't see what you're talking about in those pictures at all tbh
For what it's worth I did see it in your first pic but really wouldn't worry about that. I'm confident it will fade as you continue to use the phone without "hiding" the notch.
Also, what screen protector is that? I'd greatly appreciate a link.

Thanks! Here is the screen protector. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07FNNJ4TY/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o06_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
It's very responsive. However, the edges are lifting. I guess it will do for now until whitestone dome decides to release one for the Pixel 3 XL.
Almost 48 hours in and ZERO burn in. I checked yesterday and just now with an all white picture and a grey one. Zip. I've had a lot of screen on time the last two days too. Let's see what things look like in a week. If nothing then, I won't be too worried about it. The 2 xl's that had burn in problems showed quite a bit after a few days to a week.
Been hiding the notch on mine since I got it on Wednesday. Have not noticed anything at all on mine. Using Nacho Notch to hide it and still have the notification bar on the sides of the notch. Just blacked out with white text like a few phones that have done this. Plan on leaving it like that for the whole time I have my phone as it gives more screen area for other things.
Now I just need root to completely remove the navigation bar so that I can go back to Pie Controls...
