Hi all,
want to know how to updated rooted android phone as OTA doesn't work for root. Have been told KIES will brick the phone.
tnx
If you want the official update, just flash the new system image, and then re-root.
But do I have to unroot first and is there any risk of brick?
Not a huge risk of getting bricked, this is a pretty simple process. But just in case, you should back up all of your stuff. You do not have to un-root before re-flashing, just delete and clear everything from fastboot. If you are on a Nexus, this article should help you: http://www.digitaltrends.com/mobile/how-to-install-android-factory-image/ Good luck.
Its Cannot Update After Root....

So Re Flash Stock and Update or You Can Download Latest Firmware And Flash It...

Or you can flash a new version of the existing ROM and enjoy the updated features too.

PS by just "delete and clear everything from fastboot" do you mean data and cache wipe from download mode?
Just take a backup of your present system
If you are new to rooting most probably you will make some mistakes so having a back up always helps and always knowing where the backup is stored
Just be careful and flash the new image after backing up

PS what options should I tick in ODIN when flashing 6.0.1 or 5.1.1 over 5.0.1? As I am getting different answers and it's a bit confusing.
I have no idea...

So, I falshed the 6.0.1 on my note 4, but now there is a new built from 25th May. As I already rooted the phone, I would like to know whether I should unroot first, or I can just straight flash that new built with ODIN. If I do flash straight away, will I loose root or any data?

Anyway this morning i aciddently hit install now ;( It didn't install but now its stuck in boot loop. It powers up fine, but after everything loads a bout a minute later it says Power off...Shutting down.. and restarts and keeps boot looping. I've rooted all my other fons, but this is getting tricky. How can I fix this?? I don't mind installing ota if there is root availalble, but I just need my fon fixed! I'm on vacation 1400mi from home, but fortunately I have my old fon along. You are bootlooping because the root method used on this phone removes the stock recovery, thus the phone keeps trying, and failing, to install the update. As far as I'm aware the only way you can get out of the bootloop is to boot into fastboot and re-flash stock 12.15.15 (luckily because the 4.4 update has not installed on your device you will be able to keep your lower firmware, and thus re-root). However I am not 100% sure this is the only solution, and this would wipe your phone as well. I recommend waiting for more responses or looking around for a possible other solution if you prefer to try to not wipe your phone....

I haven't had time to look around and find the thread, but I was able to find a thread that allowed me to FXZ using fastboot to restore 12.15.15 and restore everything, leaving your data intact. Worked like a charm when I was stuck in the bootloop. So, it's doable.
@droidrepair do you have titanium back up installed and are you booting into the os even if momentarily?

Bump, this problem is an exact replica of what I am currently experiencing. You do get to boot into the OS for a little while, but after about (maybe) 1/2 a minute, it says powering off and reboots.

Yes, but it was only to delete bloatware, there is no actual backup of what's on my phone. Additionally, I don't really care about recovering lost data, I just want to bring my phone to a working state.

That's ok. When you get to your os quickly go into titanium back find apk MotorolaOTA and freeze it. That should stop your bootloop. If it doesn't you may need to freeze an app called updater. Lemme know how it works out.

Don't take 4.4 OTA as there is no way to root it. You need to start the process on rooted 4.2.2 using the slapmymoto process nicely outlined here.

after unlocking bootloader and rooting , now i can't flash any roms because it will stuck on boot animation , SO any one has KK CWM or TWRP backup for GLobal Version to go back to working phone ? i will not flash any thing anymore .
really Appreciated .
I have one, although I'm not entirely sure it'll work?
What about any privacy issues regarding my information?
I'll try and do a backup, then wipe my phone and then do another backup so you get a clean version, okay?
Edit: I don't exactly know how to share the backup. Can I just connect phone to laptop and upload here as is?

I think you are better off just restoring it to factory fresh yourself. It doesn't take long at all just find the correct stock ROM and use fastboot. Here is a guide, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219 it seems complicated, I skipped most of the explanation and just used Fastboot using the commands in 3b).
Here follows a simpler version.

I myself went back to stock, but left it rooted so that I can make backups. I need a ROM which supports the Motorola magnetic flip cover, couldn't find one, so gave up for now. As to your getting stuck on boot animation, I had the same trouble until I used TWRP ver 2631

This mighty be a noob question, so please bare with me.
I rooted my Moto G and installed custom recovery on it(TWRP), and I'm trying to do a OTA update.
But when the phone reboots, it goes to TWRP recovery screen and I don't know what to do from there.
Any help is appreciated!
Always a tricky thing ...... for some it works for some not.
Sometimes rooted phones cannot be updated sometimes yes.
Sometimes custom recoveries are able to update sometimes not.
Till now i have not found out a general answer to this Topic.
Did you change any system apps? Definately not a good idea if you want to update,
There are a few options you can do.
Go back to stock recovery
or
You can use siedeload functionality in TWRP.
Therefore you need the update file on your PC.
Then run:
Code:
adb sideload /path/to/update.zip
or
Install the the zip file via the update function in TWRP
For that you need to have the update file on the normal storage of the phone
At least one of these solutions should work for you.
If you don't have the OTA on your PC, you can look at /cache to find the OTA (only if you are rooted).

Hi all,
So I've decided to root my Exynos International Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900) using Chainfire's CF-Auto-Root. Problem is, Odin gets stuck at cache.img, then fails after a couple of minutes. Phone then displays BSOD whenever I try to boot. I can access download mode again, but not recovery. My phone is stock 4.2.2.
It's the first time I have such a problem, I flashed a couple of phones before without any trouble. I searched XDA for a solution and tried other Odin versions, different cable/ports, even tried on another computer, still doesn't work.
My first concern is not to lose any data as I didn't back anything up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Feel free to ask about any missing info.
Thanks!
I see. It didn't say on the XDA thread it was only for Lollipop, but I checked in CF's website and you're right. I've wanted to update to LL ages ago but I didn't get it through OTA. The only LL release that's available for SM-N900 in SamMobile is Russian :/ I don't know if I should flash that one...
Would it be safe to flash back my stock 4.2.2 to at least get my phone back working? Or would the Russian release work for me (assuming it has language choice)?
Also, once I choose which ROM to use, would I loose my data when I flash it? I assume it is flashed the same way than root.
Thanks!
Hi, thank you for using XDA Assist. I assume you've seen this,http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2466423. In regards to flashing a Rom you should always clear data, dalvic cache and cache before flashing. That will erase data so backup first. You should look into titanium backup on the play store.

I'm surprised. Can you at least explain why the root didn't work? I did everything as stated in the tutorial. I didn't expect a simple root operation would result in me losing everything on my phone; some data I cannot afford to lose.
Also, the phone says that using Kies in recovery mode is what should be done. Kies doesn't recognize the phone as needing repair. Any info?
Thanks !

Sorry, but live and learn. Always backup before doing any thing new on your phone. Especially rooting and flashing roms as they sometimes go wrong and rooting bypasses some of the safe guards the manufacture builds into the phone to avoid problems. Kies is crap. Learn to use Odin, if your rooting and roming you'll need it sooner or later. And you're at the sooner stage.
Edit, I'd really try asking your question here, http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-note-3/help. I'm not sure on your device if you can go back to nb1, 4.4.4, firmware. I'm assuming there is no 5.x firmware for your device at this time. You can check at sammobile.com. But Samsung has updated the bootloader with each update and you have to flash the firmware with the same bootloader version. You can't go backwards.

SOLVED. I can't believe how easy it was. I was about to flash it over from scratch but then it struck me.
Chainfire ships Odin with all its root bundles, a version where you cannot untick "Auto Reboot". Because of Auto Reboot being ticked, Odin freezes at "cache.img". It might not freeze for some people but for me, having Auto Reboot activated causes the freeze
Downloading a different version of Odin (any version, I used 3.09) that allows changing parameters and LEAVING EVERYTHING UNTICKED BUT F. RESET TIME works like a charm.
Don't forget to reboot your phone after Odin displays PASS or RESET (Long press power).
I'm going to PM Chainfire about this, and tell a max of people about it.
Thank you for your support
EDIT: Also going to NANDroid my phone. I'm tired of panicking over failed roots
Its finally here!
Is there root available? the same exploit used for sprint?

I didn't update. It kept saying communicating. So i thought it was because i was rooted and my system folder was modified. So i recovered it with the system image from that forum. Turns out it isn't the stock system image.
I can go buy a new phone. I don't know how to extract the image without rooting it though. Do you?

Hey did you do anything special to get your phone to update? I have three phones and none of them give me an option to update.

Nah, just make sure your battery is fairly full, go to setting about phone and soft ware update. That's it.
