I'm already talking to the devs about this and I was trying it earlier but the phone got stuck and wouldn't boot so until I either get or build an ENG kernel for the Verizon variant then this won't work as it needs certain things changed in the kernel first!

So it's at least possible right?

Everything is possible! It just takes someone willing to do it!

If I were willing to try this what would I have to edit to make it work on verizon.. I would have to downgrade but I see that's possible thanks to mr.mike2182 thanks for that. I see its possible on Verizon but nobody has explained how yet

It's not possible to get tethered root on Verizon yet but I'm working on that still.. However, if you need instructions on how to downgrade I posted instructions for that here.

We can't. No Kernel source has been released, and Android M needs a new bootloader which is unique for each model.

Yes. If it doesn't work. It just won't work...it either will flash or wont flash.....if anything..I keep a stock bootloader and rom on a flash drive with odin and a custom kernel and a copy of philz recovery for odin for emergencies.

I was going to but after reading thru the threads, I'm gonna hold off for official release (which should be soon for European S6) becasues apparently the battery drains from an unofficial upgrade path is pretty serious. And some people are getting force closes. I really really want to tho, so I may. I mean KNOX isnt important to me. Still debating.

LG-H915 ( Canadian variant, Videotron)

Great. Root/TWRP/all that comes with it is out for the LG V20... H918
but anyone have news, or better, ever try to root the Canadian Version ? (H915)
I'm SOOOO frustrated with Mobile Manufacturer. All I want is a powerfull phone, with the possibility to add storage (sdcard), change the damm battery and the possibility to install custom roms.
But it seems the word out there these days is to avoid those 3 things as much as possible... ARG!!!
Not even the AT&T and Verizon variants have their bootloader unlocked and rooted yet. So it's too early to be frustrated.
Any news on LG-H915?

Could it be based on the fact he's on a different network? I thought by rooting, theres a chance to lose the network unlock? I understand he's using the H915 on Rogers (similar frequency to AT&T I think), so could that be the issue?
Curious as to why the service isn't working if the AT&T variant is working, when supposodly H915 and H910 are "the same".

That's very unfortunate he hasn't been on for 2 days. I would test myself, but this is my daily driver, and I have no dev experience to debug issues that may araise.
Thank you for figuring out how to root, and unlock the BL regardless.
We hope the Dev of the h915 gets back online to provide us any updates on the progress to unlock the BL and root this model. It would be very nice to get them get them ready before Christmas day... but well, I guess we are gonna have to wait a bit longer. I know that most of us promise a nice donation if we get there anytime soon. This won't be forgotten for sure.
While root is nice and this is my first device I've used that doesnt have root remember to weigh the pros and cons. With no current method to revert you may lose out on any future otas and be stuck forever on your current android version. Personally I am in no rush although i am curious about it working for the 915. If there ever is a revert method i would be more inclined to try rooting
i actually find it a positive thing to stay in a known good version of android where things works.
I've noticed with each never version of android, things keeps getting locked down more and more.
I never went for Apple because of its lock down policy, and now Google is slowly becoming another Apple, trying to lock down the phones so people have no freedom of choice to tinkle around with their ROM, just all in the name of keeping Dev happy, because they claim when user has too much power, then their work is not safe. (by that they mean they can't milk money dry to the end users, if end users have the ability to hack)

Just got my pixel, root? tether?

Hey all,
Just got my new pixel. I'm on sprint, and want my hotspot to work for my kiddos. Is this doable? Do I need to root? If so, can someone provide the links or guides on what I need to do? I'd rather root than do a custom rom. I wanna stay as close to stock as possible.
Coming from my nexus 5, and loved having my hotspot. Although it was on a custom rom, etc.
Thanks in advance!

HotSpot is very doable... You will need root, but don't need a custom ROM to work. You could use a mod or custom kernel. I'm on VZW and have no problems using MOD's etc.

Up to you... The SkipSoft tool is nice because it automates steps necessary...Including the above link linked. Personally I manually do it, as I'm not running TWRP quite yet. It's still in its infancy and want the ability to sideload OTA's if I see fit.
SkipSoft tool can revert you back to the stock recovery, so you can still do what I've suggested. You just have to go through a few more steps. If this is your first time and you're not comfortable yet...Then use SkipSoft

I'm good with manually doing it, just wasnt sure which link I should be using. first or second. Guessing the second link. Then its a matter of using adb, no? This way dont have to deal with twrp and still get root, and get OTA updates.
Also, non of this requires me to unlock the bootloader right?

2 things...Yes you have to have an unlocked bootloader. And you cannot take the December update before unlocking the bootloader if you're not on a Google phone. Is. Verizon, T-Mobile, etc 7.1.1 does not have a bootloader exploit.
I have root on 7.1.1 with tether mod and a few other goodies. But I unlocked the bootloader prior to updates
**EDIT** I stand corrected on the models. Doesn't have to be a "google" phone, but I do know Verizon and T-Mobile have restrictions for DePixel8

That can't be true because I took the update as soon as my phone powered up for the first time. I did manage to unlock the bootloader last night, and root...so I am good.

If you have Verizon then you had to be on 7.1 when you unlocked. You can't unlock once on 7.1.1. if the update was in the middle of installing you got extremely lucky that you unlocked before it installed

Correct, the short answer is no, but to expound slightly as to why and put you on the right track.
The bootloader needs to be unlocked on the Verizon variant (like the one I have) to gain root. However, the latest security update (December) patches for the exploit that we used to unlock the bootloader (DePixel8. ) So if you didn't unlock your bootloader prior to receiving the update, there are no current ways to unlock. Thus leaving ROOT a no go for now. You'll have to wait for the next bootlocker exploit.

I stand corrected on the models then. I have the VZW variant and knew there were limitations. I would have to go back and look, but maybe Verizon and T-mobile are the only ones...of course there may be others. Either way, yes, you have to have the bootloader unlocked prior. Happy Modding!

There is no Sprint variant. There is a Google variant and a Verizon variant and that's it. If you have the Google model the bootloader can be unlocked any time. If you have a Verizon model you can ONLY unlock bootloader when it's on 7.1. if you update to 7.1.1 before unlocking you will not be able to unlock.

Seem like I remember reading that this method has a couple of drawbacks, including losing it after updates. The systemless TetherMod I linked is "supposed" to withstand OTA's updates, which is important to me at this point. I installed it on 7.1, sideloaded the OTA to 7.11, rerooted and was off and running again.

Yea I learned that the hard way. I couldn't take the 7.1.1 ota until I flashed back to stock. But I have read if you just change the build prop back you can. I think I'm going to try that other method. I guess it is there forever and can withstand the ota's . I think anyways. Haven't tested it yet.

I'm expecting the bootloader will be anti rollback but hopefully some kind of method is found so root and custom ROMs can still be done with Oreo on the H918.

Yep I would for sure make a flashable if the files are the same
As long as att releases Oreo. If not this version can be ported to support the other variants. If a dev is up to it. Hopefully. Then the v20 can also receive lineage 15.1
Edit: sent an email to LG inquiring about a possible att oreo software update. Basically said they had no plans in the immediate future and to contact att about it instead
I will port Oreo to the H910 if AT&T doesn't release it. I can't do it for other models since I don't own them. Well, I will TRY, but it is hard if you don't have a device to test on....
I know I can *PROBABLY* do it for the H915, H910PR, the VS995, and the LS997

Sorry to say that but LG has a very lazy software development team
Cool. What about H990N (Hong Kong)?
Will the model US996 get it as well? Us unlocked GSM

Not sure they, however, did say the V20 will receive the update so you could assume they mean all the variants.

I'm expecting the bootloader will be anti rollback but hopefully some kind of method is found so root and custom ROMs can still be done with Oreo on the H918.

Maybe they accidentally leave a loop hold in the oreo version. I mean we pay for the device why lock us in. I mean if you have the warranty it's up to you to root and lose it but if you are already out of it then they should just let you do what you want but if anything happens it just on you.

Hence your name. :good:
Hope they fix screen retention problem with oreo update. That's the only reason I have rooted my phone.
if it's on T-Mobile, ARB will definitely not be 0

you can't... it's a fuse that's blown once it's set so the best to can do is leave it at 1 and give us back fastboot. if they release it as ARB 0, every owner of the LGV20 is ****ed that updated to the current as of right now including users that didn't root
