Should I get the Mate 8? - Mate 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey everyone,
Really thinking about getting the Mate 8 in 32gb black. I use tmobile in the USA, is LTE and Volte enabled and working or no?
Also which version should I get?
Thanks

Don't think it matters too much which version you get. T-Mobile should be fine with International version (29) but I'd rather someone confirm as I'm relatively new to the device.
It's a very smooth and fast phone. Loving it here (UK)
Only major annoyance so far is the lack of themes which theme the full system for EMUI V4.

Awesome thank you! Where is the best place to buy the L29?

Check out Aliexpress. Just having a read around and both the AL10 and AL29 models should be fine.

Using the L29 model here in USA with T-mobile. I think this phone is very underrated and it's one of the most powerful phones I have used. I have been using a new phone every year since 2008 but I think Mate 8 is gonna break that pattern for me. Either I may get mate 9 or continue using this as long as I can.
Things I like about this phone
- Battery life (easy 2 days with about 6 hours of screen on time)
- Its super fast
- Mocha brown looks sexy
The only downside for most people will be the EMUI(I have started liking it though). It will be nice if there is some CM development for the device which seems unlikely at this point. But IMO the combination of EMUI and the hardware makes all the difference in Mate 8. I am not sure if battery life would be same if I put CM onto this.
I'd suggest you checkout ebay. I got mine for around $575 (with $50 in ebay bucks) making it $525.

for cpu .battary.screen .smooth yea
for cam no

[Q] Wait for a US-compatible Ascend Mate 7 or buy the Chinese version and hope?

I'm curious how many folks out there are going to wait to see when/if and then buy the US-compatible version of the Ascend Mate 7 or are going to buy the version that's out now?
Wait .....

I think u should wait a bit because I m a Pakistani and on HuaweiPakistan fb page they are indicating that mate7 is gonna available very shortly. In Pakistan we get international version always not Chinese ones. So i hope it would support all bands of LTE being used in USA.

As a seller, can we participate in this thread?
Our opinions for USA consumers would be, to wait for the USA version.
For EU consumers, our opinion is that the current Chinese premium MT7-TL10 shall work flawlessly in many EU countries and it offers more advantages that it carries the most complete TDD bands in the entire market.
If you are not mainly based in NA and are a frequent traveler, we highly recommend the current Chinese premium MT7-TL10.
And one more advice if we could offer: get the 3 GB RAM version for this high-end phone. It worth the bucks you are to pay.

I can't walk around with a gold phone. I just can't. What was Huawei thinking only releasing the higher-end version in gold?

HUAWEI believes it is a premium phone only for VIP man/woman.
Seriously, the MATE is targeting at high-end market. The gold color looks better in hands though. And it can be covered with the leather case.
Gold is kind of cool

For me, the gold color was kind of appealing. It stands out where all the other devices seem to do wood (at the most extreme, to me, which is not extreme) to just plain black. If I get one more "black" device, I'll lose it. You'd think manufacturers would get that we want color in our devices. Not just the same old drab non-colors.
I wouldn't mind different colors, but I think that gold is quite possibly the ugliest color you could put on a device. I'd be more likely to buy literally any other color of device than gold. I spent 2-4 minutes trying to think of another color that came close to as bad as gold but I can't think of one. I prefer not to have a case on my phone, and even with a case you'd still be able to see little slivers of color on it.
So, I went to the Huawei Mobile Phone store site and posed the following question:
You're updating your answers that this will be released in a US-compatible version, WHEN will it be released in a US-compatible version? Please update as you say to buy it from the US Huawei shop but it's not even listed there, only the Ascend Mate 2 is listed. WHEN is this going to be available in the US and is it going to be compatible with T-Mobile?

This was their response:

Thank you for your mail.
If Huawei Ascend Mate7 released in the United States, it will be compatible with T-Mobile's.

I think they mean "when" not "if" (not at all sure their English is very good).
Of course, all of this is without a date of when it will be released, but there you go. There's a few other countries that have asked about this and they seem to just be really slow at rolling out stock.
I think I understand why Huawei isn't so well known in the US, they seem unable to get stock, make the devices, whatever voodoo they have to do to fulfill a demand for a device they created.
I am not going to buy the Chinese model in lieu of waiting for the US compatible M7, but I'm inching closer to buying a competing product like the Note 4 or Nexus 6. It's been a month and a half since the Mate7 was announced, and I still couldn't tell you when it will be made widely available. The M7 is my preferred phone because of battery life, but I'm not going to wait much longer, when there are quality competitors becoming available in this space, to be honest.

I wrote this exact thing on their website. Their response, "Mate is low in stock right now.. "
I think I know now why they're considered #3 in worldwide sales and nor even considered by US carriers. They seem very lackadaisical about the urgency of coming to market with an announced product.
Sad really.
I have the premium gold chinese variant, and though I can't speak for US, it works fine in EU.
And the gold colour looks nice - I wouldn't really call it proper gold. anyway - it looks different to other flat black slabs that everyone else is carrying

Hi. Just wondering, as I'm not that familiar with Huawei products. In what ways do you think the Mate 7 would be disappointing? Regardless, I would hold out for Mate 8 - the Kirin 950 does sound impressive. Although I do not know much about the UI. Thanks!

My best smartphone in years! Lots of features for a very reasonable price (here in the Netherlands I paid eur 350 for), never ever had a battery better than this, going on w/o troubles for almost two days (unrooted, stock; heavy user), much much better than my LG g3 before (slow, terrible battery times).
With lollipop (manually updated couple of weeks ago) state of the art handset, would not trade for anything else right now!
Just my 2p..

any good 6"+ phones

so it seems that i have just about had it with my mate 7. if someone would have told me of the lack of custom roms i would not have bought it. having said that, its a new year with new phones rocking snapdragon 820!!! YAY!!! so, anyone know of any good 6 inch phones coming out soon? im currently looking at the Oppo R7 Plus and the ZTE Axon Max but like i said, im hoping for a phone with an SD820. anyway, any and all suggestions are welcome. thanks!
Just look at the news section of the XDA site. They're at MWC 2016 right now, looking at the new releases.
I have been looking at MVC I think this year was a huge disappointment. Vivo Xplay 5 was biggest surprise.
LG G5 was a nice concept..it is just that the LG lack totally any sense of elegant design.. it looks not good on the back..
camera and performance is probably good, but the battery performance is probably not good (and no I will not carry a extra battery in my pocket)
S7 I think they will suceed with most things, good battery life, best display..
Why I will not buy S7 is the price.. and Samsung software..I can't stand it..
I am not a huge fan of samsung design and form factor..
I regret I did not buy the Mate 8 in november now..I will now buy the Mate 8, the mocha brown version. I was so sure I would buy the gold version but..after much thinking..I will go with the mocha brown.
What's wrong with your M7?
I'd like a Mate 8 myself, it's a beast!
But I don't need one.
The Mate 7 does what I need. It's a nice phone.
If you want to update but your M7 is running ok, I'd wait a month or two and see what new models are released.
Well if official marshmallow had been released by now I might have kept the mate 7 for a while

I use Smart Launcher Pro. It's the only launcher I have found that properly supports full rotation and re-organisation of lockscreen and homescreen. I use it in landscape in the car and that one feature is a must have.

I hesitated for a long time between the M7 and the R7 Plus , ended up with the R7 Plus and so far i'm very impressed , the official CM12.1/CM13 support is very nice , it has a Snapdragon 615 which is of course less powerful than the 820 but it results in an astounding battery life , lasting a full day and well into the second day. Good luck with whatever choice you make. :silly:

The phone of my dreams?

Hello, all.
I've recently discovered Huawei and their larger-than-standard phablets. Before now, I only wished for a 7"-8" tablet with a cellular radio... Now I come to find out... It's a thing.
I've just started looking into how to get one of these behemoths into my hands... Sadly it seems I may have to ditch Sprint (CDMA) to do so... But to realize such a huge phone... I'd do it in a second.
Can anyone tell me about Huawei's supply chain into the USA? How do I go about buying one?
Also, the devices I'm looking at seem to be a bit on the old side... The Mediapad X2 being the most current. Is this correct? Am I not seeing something new about to hit the scene?
Educate me. I'm kinda over using strictly what my carrier says I can.
(I've just realized this post likely belongs in Q&A. My apologies. Please move it if you see fit. Thank you.)

You can buy one from newegg.com. It still ships from China but you're secured through Newegg,
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA86Y4A21232&cm_re=mediapad_x2-_-9SIA86Y4A21232-_-Product
The X2 is over a year old but is sill the king of the 7 inch phablet. We have roms for it and help if you need it. It doesn't matter which model you get as far as LTE goes because all models will only give you 3G or HSPA+.

Awesome! Thanks for this reply. Honestly, I'm kinda glad I'm late to this party. I imagine I can pick up the x2, which is still an upgrade for me, for less than premium price.
Bummer on the GSM only thing, but again, I'm not sure it matters that much. I do stream a LOT of Google music via unlimited 4g LTE, so that may hurt... So torn. Maybe I score a hotspot for the car... Hmm.
Hspa is fast enough for any streaming music or video. I had LTE with my previous big phone, Xperia Z Ultra and I don't miss that at all. This monster 16:10 display is amazing but the phone is not perfect.
Some of us have issues with the GPS suddenly not working until a restart of the phone. Still not sale to figure out what triggers that issue.
Also 5Ghz wifi is much weaker than my other devices and the same seems to apply to Bluetooth.
No deal breakers for me but just thought I would mention it.
The only thing I miss is NFC really

That is fantastic news. Is HSPA similar/equal to a 3G CDMA network? Or maybe a middle step between 3 and 4G?

How prevalent is this issue? Out of say, 100 users, how many seem to be affected? Or is it not quantifiable in these terms? Not a deal breaker (unless I'm severely affected, I suppose...)

Hmm. When the first 7" Samsung tablet came out, I worked at Sprint. We all joked about using it as a phone and held it up to our faces... It felt a bit silly. I was thinking I might use a Jawbone for phone on my imaginary tablet... I guess the question is: how weak is it?

No big deal for me. I've never found a good use for NFC. What did you use it for?
The final hurdle (I think) is T-mo. What kind of deal will I get from them... Guess I need to go talk to them.
Thanks again for the input and info.
Also, considering the age of the x2, would it be wise to hold off a bit for its successor? I've read the thread about the x3/m2, have there been any updates in that department?

If you don't care about size then yes, its better than the Mediapad X2, it won't be as fast as the latest stuff however like the Zenphone 3 Ultra. But its definitely fast enough for anything you need and the screen is big and gorgeous.
You can also take a look at the Huawei Honor Note 8. I think the 128G model is similar in price as the X2. I have both and the 6.6 inch Note 8 is about 1 cm narrower than the X2 and about the same in length. It has a better screen, better CPU and more RAM and eMMC storage.

A quick googling shows only a couple places to buy the honor at the moment, eBay or aliexpress. Being my first foray into international phones, is this fairly common? Am I missing an obvious source for purchasing?

Is there some way to fool a phone to think it's a tablet (and vice versa)? I have a MediaPad X2 that I'd like to use more as a tablet than a phone.
Is that possible?

Next phone?

Have had the Phab 2 Pro since Jan. I purchased this for the large screen and it does deliver. I love the large screen, and the phone is fast also(at least for me). But I can't help but feel left out on the software upgrade bandwagon. Still stuck on December Security updated and Android 6.0.1. I knew going in that updates could be a problem so I am not trying to sound like I am complaining. I have started to eye new phones and there are just not that many prospects for large screen phones in the US. Samsung is getting close with the S8+, but I don't want to lose any screen real estate at all. If anything I would go larger. I am eagerly awaiting the final Note 8 specs.
Does anyone have any suggestions on a replacement for the Phab 2 Pro that at least has the same screen size or larger?
Thanks

It was the right purchase at the time for me as I wanted a large screen phone and I love it, but I am starting to look ahead and do not see any alternatives out there for the US as far as large screen phones. I admire the ASUS Zenfone 3 Ultra but it does not support ATT LTE here in the states. I guess we just do not have enough people wanting large screen phones in the US. As for me I love them!
I LOOOOVED the phone but it didn't text reliably for me in Suffolk, VA (although it did for someone in New York).
I, too, am bummed that large screen phones are not popular enough here in the USA - I don't get it... Anyway, I have seen the Note 8 and feel like it's the wrong shape. Long and skinny???
I got the Huawei Mate 10 Pro 128GB which was released 9n February 18th. I got it with a $150 gift card from Amazon and received it on Sunday, February 18th! I know you are not going to believe it - but I haven't even set it up yet! But today is THE DAY!!! I have been holding off because it doesn't have an sdcard slot (I am just comfortable with an sdcard) and I didn't really like the shape of that screen, either... But realized that I wouldn't get any better specs for the price and, being a USA release, I might have decent luck with updates.

Check out the Mate 20 X. It's 7.2 inches of awesomeness with full LTE support here in the US.
