I've always rooted straight away, but I'm going to wait a bit on my new HTC 10. That leaves me trying to backup and restore apps without TB. I just downloaded and made a backup with Helium, only there are a few dozen apps that apparently don't allow backups to be made. Is there any way to backup these apps (just the apk's) and install them on the new phone without installing one by one from the Play store? I restored the apps that allow backups but the data wasn't restored. I have app syncing enabled in settings, but it apparently doesn't work. Help!

I used Titantium for my phone which was running Superclean ROM, with the Voodoo kernel, but now my wife (who didn't want me playing with her phone previously) wants to update to Froyo...
titanium is the best way to do it and preserve the user data.
however, if she really doesn't want her phone rooted (even though the froyo update will void the warranty, and is pre-rooted anyway ) you're stuck using appbrain.
i personally used titanium to back up all my apps and system data, and it worked great.

I used titanium backup, the free version will suffice for backups. You will have to make the backups on your phone, then reinstall Titanium Backup once you boot into froyo, in order to restore your backups again.

+1 I would get the premium mostly cause you will always use this app. Also, I have a spare sd card, and I make a mirror of the internal sd by just select all> copy> paste into external sd card. Then you have a mirror of what is on the internal card.
I used My Backup when I rooted my phone, saved it to sd, and it worked quite nice. Saved all my messages and was easy to restore. Had the option of saving data and app or just one or the other.
I'm wondering if I can expect a backup using Titanium Backup (backing up all user apps + system data) on my existing phone running Android 2.2.2 to be properly restored when it comes back from a factory repair running a newer OS. Will my apps and data really work properly if they update my OS? I'd rather go this route than using a root backup type backup because I'd like to get the OS upgrade. Or is there an easier way to get an OS upgrade while keeping all my apps?
I am using Titanium Backup on my rooted device.
I am afraid this app and other backup-apps are only able to backup and restore user, or pre-installed applications that are not part of the OS.
You cannot backup or restore any system data without rooting the device first, because accessing system data requires root access. The same is true for restoring the data later on.
So if you want to backup system data, preferences or a whole system backup (NANDbackup), you'll have to get root first!

Yes this will work as you said you backed up system apps instead is in my experience sometimes when you restore apps and data through titanium it sometime makes apps a little wonky like force closing and such. I would go for it worse case scenario is you notice apps acting up, do a factory reset if unrooted or wipe and reinstall rom if rooted and then when you restore with titanium press the option to restore app only then a least you don't have redownload apps from the market

So I have an Xperia Play on official 2.3.4, but I want to update it to 4.0 MIUI, without losing my data.
If I absolutely need to wipe all my data, is there a way of backing up SMS messages, then restoring them back as if they were never wiped, after the ROM change?

MyBackup and Titanium Backup are two popular apps that can back up all your SMS/MMS and much more. They will back up just about everything you need to your memory card and allow you to easily restore that data after flashing your new ROM.
Ok, I have Titanium Backup Pro with Google Drive enabled, but I can't figure out how to sync to it. I think I'll back a ROM Manager backup just in case..

Hii guys .. I have been using titanium backup from a long time. But from sometime it doesn't seem to be working that good for me. I backed up my apps and data .. Then isntalled a custom rom (bliss pop) i restored the backup (app+data) and although all apps got restored, the data was gone. I lost atleast 8-10 gb of data because i had a lot of heavy games. Do i have any means to recover that data? If not is there any other alternative backup app than titanium backup? For future preference. Otherwise i won9be able to change roms or return to stock.

Hmm..titanium backup is supposed to be the best backup app, dunno why that happened to you.
Anyway, you can also try helium. Its free. I've never personally tried it but ive heard that it works all well as TB and it has a sync feature so u don't need to manually backup all the time when u have some thing new in an app..
Try helium backup. Used to use it when my phone wasnt rooted. Obviously not as good as titanium backup.
Search for Backup+ on xda. An awesome alternative to Titanium backup. Trust me, you'll love it.
TiBu doesn't backup large game data files unless explicitly set in the options. By default it will only back them up if it's under 32MB (See Backup app external data & Select external data by max size)
I use my backup. It's an awesome app. While I was using tb, I switched to it. It's free for a month, so you can try it.

You can do manual backups of heavy games.
1.try backup on apk of the game using app backup and restore app from the play store and backup the apk.
2.most of the heavy games data are stored in Android -> obb.. So keep a backup of obb on the system or phone by just copying it to another folder.
3. After installing a new rom. Place the obb in the android folder and then install back the app from the app app backup and restore.

I was asking earlier about how to make a list of all the apps I have installed, so that when I root my Note 4 (which involves wiping the phone), I can go through the list and easily remember which apps I should reinstall. But someone suggested just using a backup app like Helium, and then restoring them once I root my Note 4.
Will that actually work? Can I just use a backup app like Helium or Titanium or MyBackup, backup all my installed apps and their user data, then root/wipe the phone, reinstall said backup app, and I'll be able to restore all the apps I have installed, and they'll just work?
And if so, does it include things like user data for each app like configuration options and locally stored saved games? Can I go through the list and only restore the apps that I really want, unchecking all the ones I don't want reinstalled?
