Device Manufacturer & Model: LG Nexus 5
Android Version: 5.0.2
Rom Info: CM12 02/28 Nightly, tested also on CM12 02/15 Nightly
Detailed Problem Description:
Hi. I have encountered a very specific issue with MX Player. When I am playing full HD portrait video and next video is full HD landscape, the Android video driver seems to completely crash in the event when videos switch. E.g. when portrait one ends and landscape one starts playing. Sometimes the device freezes with corrupted graphics, sometimes it recovers, but graphics are shifted and reboot is needed to resume normal operation.
I have reset the settings to default when reproducing the issue and only setting I am using is Display / Settings / Screen / Orientation : Auto rotation. I am holding the phone in portrait, so basically the first video should be full screen on my phone and the second should be scaled down a lot to fit in portrait. It happens with both HW and HW+ codecs.
I have recorded two short videos which can be used to reproduce the problem. I have also recorded the behavior on the phone using another camera (this time the phone "kind of recovered").
Steps to reproduce the problem:
1. Install MX player.
2. Set Display / Settings / Screen / Orientation : Auto rotation
3. Play attached videos when holding the phone in portrait, the crash should appear when the first ends and the second starts.
See recorded video for details.
Logs from MX Player
Video 1 - portrait
Video 2 - landscape
Issue recorded using another camera to show what happens on the phone
It works in default video player and does not cause anything similar. I did not have a chance to try it on stock ROM yet. However, I have a lot of videos with different sizes and switching between them does not cause the issue. Just full HD videos.
Let me know if any more details are needed.
It happens on stock 5.1 too. Very annoying if you have mix of portrait and landscape videos recorded.

It looks like ROM issue if HW has same issue.
FYI, HW is default media player actually which is provided by the OS.

I did some more testing. It happens on all factory images I had for Nexus 5, 4.4.4, 5.0.1, 5.1. All of them exhibit the same problem. I tried also the SW decoder, but that did not tell me anything, as SW does not follow the tag for portrait orientation, so the portrait video showed up as landscape anyway.
Now the interesting part is that default player does not crash like that, when switching between the videos. But it takes longer to switch. It seems that it deletes the whole drawing surface and starts it again. Contrary, when switching videos in MX Player you can always see last frame of previous video stretch to the following video size before it starts playing.
Hi,
I am using
Nexus 7 (2013)
Mx player version : 1.7.38 ( ARMV7 NEON )
Custom codec : 1.7.32
A few days ago, my device was upgraded to Android 5.1. Now, MX Player is unable to fast forward or resume to the middle of a MP4 or Xvid file. I can fast forward a couple of minutes at a time, but if I fast forward, using the slider, for a long period, like half an hour, the screen is blank but there is sound. If I resume a file to a point in the middle of the file, the same thing happens, i.e. sound and blank screen. MX player and files are the same. Previously, I was on Android 5.02 and everything was fine.
Would appreciate if you can fix this.
If need be, I can send the logs from my device.

And the same problem lol.
it seems the hw+ is broken on 5.1 so im using the hw and its working fine
i dont think you should use the hw+ until its fixed because its making the device lags alot when the problem occurs

Thanks for the tip. H/W decoder solves the problem.
Hi everyone.
I like to listen to audiobooks with mx player and the files tend to be large (>10h).
Very often after I am done listening to the audiobook and pause the playback and switch to other apps and then return to MX player later I can see the progress indicator skip back to the start of my previous listening session.
This happens in about 50% of tries but apparently only after Android has had time to clean up memory. I am not sure on that though. It doesn't seem to matter which Audioformat the file has.
My guess is that under certain circumstances the current playback time is not correctly stored.
I am using a a rooted Samsung Galaxy S7 with the latest stock firmware.
The bug has occurred on my Nexus 5 over a year ago too though.
I can provide more information if needed.
hi,
as you said, it will happen when android kills MX Player in a unexpected way. MX Player will save the sate of the playback on some conditions like manual pausing, or pause due to some interference from other apps. When it's killed it will die all of sudden & can't save the state. If you are using RAM boosters & memory cleaner apps, kindly exclude MX Player in it. As you are using a Samsung device, try to exclude MX Player in Smart Manager & check it still happens.
I had some similar issues on S5 in past & reported to Samsung about a firmware issue in which Samsung Smart Manager kills the important audio service. It was resulting to the issue. Later it was fixed by Samsung through a firmware update.
Hi.
I just updated to the newest version. I love mxplayer pro. And one of my favorite things about it is the background play feature. Well it no longer works even when having it on. I am trying to play one of my videos from my Plex server and when I go to turn off the screen it no longer continues to play. Please help. Pixel XL running Android 8.0 Oreo

I am in the same situation (Pixel XL, MX Player Pro, just updated to Oreo) and background play stopped working. However, this does not consistently happen unless I am connected to a Bluetooth speaker.
I use MX Player for audio only often. This is the easiest way to reproduce the problem:
1. Connect to Bluetooth (in this case I have an Amazon Tap and I tell Alexa to connect to my phone).
2. After connecting start an MP3.
2. Press the power button to turn off the screen.
3. Wait a few seconds and the audio will stop playing.
4. Swipe to look at the notification for MX Player and note that the time in the MP3 is incrementing but no sound.
MX Player is *not* crashing. You can reopen the screen and press pause (wait) and then press play on the lock screen notification and MX Player will begin to play audio even when the screen goes back to sleep.
Note that this is not always consistent. It happens almost all the time, but I have done the above procedure and on some occasions audio will continue to play. Again, I think it happens much more often when connected to a Bluetooth speaker.
If you let me know how to collect a bug report or some sort of dev log when MX Player I will. But again, MX Player is not crashing when this happens.
I have the same issue since the last update on my nexus 5x running Android 8.
Update: it doesn't seem to happen when playing either local content, or a stream over samba. Only remote streams (I use megabox HD)

Ok, I was able to reproduce this. Apparently this isn't as cut-and-dried as any Bluetooth speaker causes it. I connected this to my Amazon Echo Tap and the problem happened, so I collected the log linked here:
https://www.dropbox.com/s/ets5njs6rrm8c1l/report_2017-09-18_111234.zip?dl=0
However, I had trouble reproducing this problem with several other Bluetooth speakers, if that is relevant. It did happen before I knew how to collect bug reports but I wasn't able to reproduce it on any Bluetooth except the Tap this morning.
I'm using google pixel, android 8.0. Mx player ver 1.9.8
Music stop playing when I press the home button.
I'm not connected to bluetooth.

After the recent update to MX Player Pro 1.9.8 I think all of the background play problems disappeared for me EXCEPT for when I am connected over Bluetooth to an Amazon Tap.
I have tried every combination (with no Bluetooth, Echo, Echo Dot, various generic Bluetooth speakers and the Tap) and I only see the audio in background problem when my Pixel XL is connected to the Tap.
The symptoms are the same and easy to reproduce. You can see the player still incrementing time in notifications but there is no audio. When MX Player Pro is brought back to the foreground audio starts playing again and the position in the MP3 has still been incrementing while MX Player was in the background.
I took another report from MX Player Pro, linked here (I can't put outside links because my account is too young, this is the rest of the URL without dropbox.com prepended...is there some other way I should do this?):

Hi,
Our developers already notified about the issue about the background play issue with remote streams. We will try to fix it ASAP.
You may set HW+ as default for network streams as a temporary workaround. HW+ & SW works as usual.

I wanted to follow up that any additional problems and weirdness with MX Player Pro after your initial fix have also been fixed by the Android 8.0.0 Security patch for October 5, 2017. Background play works for all cases I had issues with.

in developer option search DISABLE USB AUDIO ROUTING and turn it on
I can report that playback pauses on bluetooth speakers (Anker SoundCore Mini) on AIMP player as soon as the screen turns off, but it works well with LineageOS Music player (or so I think it works). Phone in question is Galaxy S5 klte
It worked well in 14.1, but not in 15.1 ofc
I will try the baba.yoga suggestion
Latest update, lost background play ability
Frustrating. App just updated and I lost background playing, settings still the same. If I uninstall the app and reinstall, I get background playing for a hour or so, then it disappears again.

This is caused by the new restriction when targetting the newer android SDKs. When the system force closes a foreground service (used to prevent it from getting killed when the device reaches low memory state), it can't be restarted again by the app itself. You have to completely force stop the MX. Then it will work again.
If it is possible, kindly collect the logs through ADB when the MX Player is getting killed by the system. It will help us to understand the issue.

HI,
Looks like you were playing in HW decoder. HW decoder uses android mediaplayer API. It's known that under some unkown circumstances it may lead to such freezes. It will happen with all apps that use the mediaplayer API (Like Stock Gallery, Google Photos, etc). But, It will continue to report to the calling app as playback is in progress. Just restart & check again. It will go away.
If the problem continues, use HW+ as default. It will work.

Not for me. I'm using a Nexus 6P, latest Oreo update and it's still doing this whether in HW or HW+ mode.
I can't be certain for sure but I think I recall testing it in SW mode a year ago and it also had this issue.
