From what I have gathered the SGS supports a lot more video/audio formats than Nexus S out of the box (correct me if I am wrong). Will it be possible to port these codecs from the SGS over to the NS?
Video Player Nexus S
Helps. Need a video player for Nexus S. I switched from my G2 to this. With the G2, i used ArcMedia and it played pretty much anything without any conversion. Now all i get is FCs on the Nexus S. Sad panda i am right now.

[Q] How to play vidoes/movies on Nexus S?
So i was thinking about watching a movie this afternoon on my brand new Nexus S and started looking for some sort of video player under the appications. Is it true that the phone doesnt come with any kind of Video Player? How do i watch movies? What format to use for the movies? I download all my movies and they're all .avi. All the help, comments and suggestions are highly appreciated.
AVI is just a container. It can hold any kind of codec inside. I heard people reccomend rockplayer is good though. Try that and report back on how it works.
Rockplayer doesn't work. Lots of players crashes on the Nexus S right now. They all need to be updated.

You're right. Nothing works at the moment. Is it true our nexus came with absolutely no video player?

When I try to open a video file from astro, among the choices of program given to me is one called "movies"; this uses the same icon as the "gallery" proram, comes preloaded on the phone, and also fails to open most video formats.
Playing M4P via Meridian and it works great.

Let me look up meridian. I guess I am gonna have to convert from avi to the extension you mentioned.

Gallery is the video player.

So is the issue that the nexus s doesn't come with an xvid codec or that apps with software decoding of the codecs like rockplayer just need to be updated ? Sorry if I'm a little dense about this.
I guess the 3rd party apps need to be updated.

So is there a specific file type that the galley plays? I just created a movie folder with 2 avi files but gallery isn't showing anything other than pictures on the same storage.

M4P is a .h264 container. Most videos on the internet or torrents for phones come in M4P format. Best quality for the size.
Most phones can play M4P right out of the box. YouTube is a big supporter of the container.

quick question regarding the camera, how do you upload videos to picasa.
I went to the gallery and hit menu to get the option to share, but I only see the option there when its photos. I thought you can upload videos also.
I could not find a way to upload on mine. I have just used "Picasa Uploader" from the market. It's free and uploads video and pictures.

Nothing that I have ran across....that would make sense to include your service in the phone.

Yeah I know.
BTW did you check the videos you uploaded on picasa from your nexus?
I just uploaded one using the same app you said, and it seems that the quality is not the same than that which was taken on the phone. Its a much lesser one.
im going to upgrade to a nexus s 4g this month, and i have 2 questions about playing videos on the phone:
from what i understand, the nexus cant shoot HD, but can it play HD videos that i load onto the phone?
is there an app that can play .avi cuz id really hate to convert my videos.
No I dont think HD video work, I forget the app but there is one to play .Avi it wasnt flawless tho
RockPlayer. AVIs are flawless, MKVs are flawless as well but there is a bug with no audio being outputted when hardware decoding MKVs. .AVIs have absolutely no problem
MoboPlayer is pretty good too
Ill havd to try rockplayer is it free? I tried a app that needed unlocking after 15 days
Sent from my Nexus S using XDA App
Yes theres a free version available on the market. Moboplayer is reallh good too.

thanks for the info
i meant really. rockplayer is still my recommendation of choice, paid app of course (you have to get it through his website)
I Dont know it man, trying the free version on the market and it keeps freezing every time I open a 720p AVI file
my nexus s love mobo player.
720p working great with it. (subtitle support also)
I'm considering buying a Xoom, and I've been trying to read up on it, and it seems as though video playback has been discussed to great extent. Most of what I've read is about HD files (.mkv).
How is the video playback of .avi files on the stock player?
If it sucks, would you recommend any other apps? Or would I need to re-encode them?
I will use this when travelling, so I can't use any streaming software from my regular pc.
I have no problem with rooting and installing custom ROMs if that would improve anything!
Thank you!
Is it so much of a diffference it's worth doing it? Is it unwatchable if you don't?

In my opinion it is not worth doing. Just download Mobo Player from the market and you'll be fine. Not had 1 .avi that would not work with Mobo, nor noticed any difference in the quality.
No issues here either, there are a few things that I've reencoded due to size but not found any issues..
fyi I've been using freemaker video converter to reencode stuff if it needed doing.
On the xoom page on motos website it says that .ago is not nativly supported by the android OS, and that using decoders may reduce battery time if its not done on a hardware level. Any of you having trouble with battery life?
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Mobo does both hardware and software rendering and there are other players on the market that will use hardware rendering.
As for battery life, I cant honestly say that I have seen a decrease that would make a difference to my useage.
Thank you all!

I had the same movies on the first atrix and they played flawlessly. They're .avi and either they won't play or they lag, and audio isn't synced. Please let me know if this can be fixed or if it may just be my phone. I have already reflashed my phone back to stock and it didn't fix the problem, thank you.

Do you also have problems them playing with DicePlayer?
I normally don't use the stock player as sometimes it lags or doesn't play some files on my SD card so I used moboplayer

I guess I'll try downloading different players... also do you guys remember the way we could play music, videos, and see pics through HDMI on the ffirst atrix? I don't have that option, I can only mirror my display -_- and playing movies like that really screws with the quality

Try .mpg/.mpeg and see if that helps.

Check the audio on the files, if the audio is 48hz then playback skip crazy like
I have the same problems. For some reason the Atrix 2's hardware decoders aren't adequate. I can play a 720p mp4 file perfectly but when playing avi files it gets really choppy.
I simply used MX Video Player. Great video player. It let's you select the folders that it scans for video files. The player tries HW decoding and if that doesn't work it goes to SW decoding. Since most avi's play in HW decoding just click the screen's HW sign to change it to SW or SW fast. Also, I found it better to leave the deinterlace option unchecked.
now, I just use this as my phone's go to "vlc player"
My HOXL cant play any HD Video 720p Or 1080p fine without lag whether its mp4,avi or wma
I have tried alot of videos all lag,,,the windows 7 sample video wildlife in hd also lags
I use stock video player,,tried mx also lags more on software decoder

Have you tried both?

I have tried alot of video apps including mx player,,it lags more with software rendering, i am surprised to see that why it lags on stock video player,,btw how can i get proper codec for mx player?

By the way why stock video player cant play it smoothly? I have xperia v also,it has same processor & gpu it plays full hd super smooth with its own video player

Can't say I watch too much 1080 video on my phone (do most of my video watching on my Note 8 tablet), but MX Player is what I use too.
The HTC stock player has always been a joke. Its not compatible with a lot of formats/codecs, I've never really made any use of it aside from watching the videos I've taken with the phone's video camera. In general, I've never been much a user of stock players from any manufacturer. There is always going to be incomplete format support and/or performance lag. I'm guessing its due to licensing of various proprietary formats/codecs. Good 3rd party players are the way to go on Android.
Why the stock player lags now on Sense 5, when it didn't before, I can't say for certain. Lots has been updated in Sense 5, but HTC seems to break as many things as they fix sometimes. So this may be one of those cases. I haven't read about this issue before, so there is likely no easy fix.
