[Completed] Tesco Hudl 2 error with Google play services - XDA Assist

I have a Hudl 2 running Android 5.1 build no. LMY471.rel.android-build.20150917.142239
kernel version. 3.10.62-x86_64_byt-g105afb7 [email protected] #1
Recently I started getting errors with lots of apps including Gmail, LastPass, Google Play Music and many more. The error is caused by Google play Services, which says "your device isnt compatible with this version".
I cannot update Google Play Services, I cannot remove it, I cannot roll back to an earlier version. There are no buttons to do so in settings / apps / all
I have tried the solutions suggested on the Tesco support pages which include, Clearing the cache on Google Play services, and clearing all data. I have performed a software reset from settings and also a hardware reset clearing all data.
Nothing works and I am at a loss as to what else to try so I am stuck with a Hudl where at least half of the apps wont work.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Mark

Thanks very much for the reply.
After much head scratching I managed to solve it myself last night. It was the wrong version of Google play services for the Android version on the tablet. Why it wouldnt update, I have no idea and why the recovery ROM has got the wrong verion of Play services is anyone guess. To solve it was a matter of finding the correct version of play services on apkmirror.com and sideloading it.
Thanks

"Unfortunately google play store has stopped": what to do (general)

There are a gazillion threads on this topic, but most of them are about device-specific or carrier-specific problems. However google play store can stop for a number of reasons that are more generic. Googling them is a pain in the butt, as I recently discovered. This thread is intended as a place to collect them together. As well as checking here, it would be important to check on threads for your specific device and carrier, as they may have pushed a bad version.
Cause: Part-installed apps: something went wrong part-way through installing an app
Checking: Check in google play; if it says 'downloading' or 'installing' permanently, something is amiss
Solution: Try uninstalling the app (you may be able to reinstall it successfully afterward)
Cause: /mnt/sdcard is full
Checking: If you have a terminal, use the "df" command, otherwise use a capable file viewer
Solution: On a terminal, "cd /mnt/sdcard", then "du -s (dirname)" to check sizes, "rm -r (dirname)" to remove something (or use 'mv (dirname) /mnt/external_sd if you have an external sd card with some space). On a file viewer, move or remove relevant directories. You can't avoid this: if your sd card is full, you're definitely going to have to remove something (or move it to your external card) - the system isn't going to work with a full card. USE WITH CARE EITHER WAY. Whatever you remove cannot be retrieved, and removing the wrong thing can make your system or applications misbehave.
Cause: Corrupted data
Checking: Try the solutions in increasing order of severity.
Solution:
Go into Settings, then apps, then All, click on Google Play Store. Then:
Clear cache, Force stop, restart Google Play and retry
Go into Settings, then apps, then All, click on Google Play Store. Then:
Clear data, Force stop, restart Google Play and retry
Go into Settings, then Accounts and Sync, Click on your account, then on options icon, Remove account (ignore warnings - it's easy to restore)
Restart Google Play. It will ask you to add an account - add your original back in.
Cause: Corrupted binaries
Checking: Not sure how...
Solution: Install an updated binary. This thread always seems to have the latest. But you should probably check your device and vendor lists in case there is a device-specific binary (I think the more specific binaries currently just add a different skin, but further information would be good). You may also need to reinstall google play services (thanks jpeg1900)
Or:
"I just reflashed the same gapps in CWM over the first installation, rebooted and had to wait a few minutes before Play Store actually started working again." - Thanks Nephatiu (see below).
Please feel free to add further info below. I'll try to incorporate all good nuggets into this post.
PS anyone know a better way to do tables in this wiki?

Not sure. I had a similar problem at one time, and eventually discovered it was due to a specific app that had only half-installed itself (perhaps the tab had crashed halfway through the download, not sure, it's lost in the mists of time). Uninstalling that app got over the problem. However it might help someone (perhaps you) if you post the error message that you get on the display (people are likely to google it, so that you might get together with other people with the same problem).
I had issues with the Play Store earlier today and tried clearing the app cache and data to no avail, but found another simple fix. I uninstalled updates from version 3.8.15 back to 3.7.15. Worked like a charm.
Well, my Play Store recently crashed during updates, after which it wouldn't run any longer anymore stating that same message every time I try running it and also every time an app accesses the store for information (which seems to happen when I just open the apps). My sdcard wasn't full, clearing data and cache did nothing, no other data is corrupted, I replaced the market with a fresh copy apk, tried different versions, ... Nothing worked... So, reading the internet, I saw the final solution was to remove and re-add my Google account, but for some reason (not a rational one) I didn't really want to do this, so I went back to CWM recovery mode, reflashed the gapps zip I used the first time and rebooted... Once booted it didn't give me the error I usually get on any other boot since it started crashing, but when I tried running Play Store, it crashed again with the same message... Defeated I went to my Google accounts to remove, at which point (just before doing anything) I noticed the Updates-notification of the Play Store popping up in my notification drawer. I tapped it and Play Store booted, everything works again, and it updated itself back to the latest version, still without any problems.
So in short, if you don't ant to read the entire text:
I just reflashed the same gapps in CWM over the first installation, rebooted and had to wait a few minutes before Play Store actually started working again.
Dunno if this will work for anyone of you, 'cause it depends on the reason it's not working, but this possible solution should not be missing from your list since it worked for at least one person (me).

Hotspot Shield VPN 1.3
just download Hotspot Shield VPN 1.3
http://www.androiddrawer.com/11257/download-hotspot-shield-vpn-1-3-app-apk/
and google play store will work again
What does Hotspot Shield VPN 1.3 have to do with Google Play not working?
That is an app which creates a VPN so you can access sites that are locked or not authorized.
Personally I went into Settings than Application Manager, then ALL, then Google Play Store.
After that i cleared all the data, force stopped the app and restarted it again.
It worked nicely.

seems point 3 fixes it for me, but as soon as im back on the play store and starting to download something it just starts over again with the error message. Any ideas?
Not even sure how to describe this one..
Hardware: ASUS ME301T (MeMo Smart Pad 10)
Version: 4.2.1 (10.6.1.29, but it was happening on 10.6.1.25 as well)
Rooted, SuperSU installed for the multi-user support. Aside from that, the device is stock.
Play Store: 4.1.6 (4.0.something factory)
Setup:
2 users
Primary user has 2 Google accounts+FB account
Secondary user has a single Google account
Problem:
I have 43 apps installed on the primary user. If I install even 1 more, the app crashes when trying to load the list of installed apps. Doesn't seem to matter what the 44th app is. Uninstall it to drop it back to 43 and it works just fine again. Secondary user is at 46 and no issues. I've tried removing both Google accounts, clearing data+cache of the store, DMClient, and Download Manager, as well as removing the store updates. Nothing has worked. The only things left I can think of is trying to update the store manually via newer apk or a factory reset. I don't know what, if anything, ASUS changed in the store, as the installed size reports 10.46mb or so. Also want to avoid a reset for obvious pain-in-the-arse related reasons.
Any ideas?
I ran into a similar problem. After reading this thread, i tried a few of the suggestions. What ended up working for me was to go to the application manager, got to google play store, uninstall updates, and re install the factory version. Did the same for google play services.
same problem with 4.3.1.1
using a custom rom (LiquidSmooth) on a Galaxy Note II (N7100) international.
went through all the removing\reinstalling\clear cache tricks.. same error pops up every time i try to open the store, and sometimes just as a background process.
not sure if re-flashing will help... (cleared cache and dalvik too).
thoughts..?

No good ones, but just wondering - is there any possibility it's the 43rd app that is the root of the problem? Perhaps its data is corrupted in play's database, and adding another app reveals the problem.

Just in case you didn't try it, jpeg1900's suggestion of reinstalling google play services (rather than just google play) might be relevant here, in light of it crashing as a background process.

I broke it!!!
after trying all the processes, several times
I am running Paranoid Android ROM and just wondered if changing hybrid profile of Google play store was contributing to app crashing?!?
note: I was able to open app but from opening menu could not go into any individual tabs (I.e. "apps") without crashing...
Changing hybrid settings back to lower DPI fixed issue and I have just set to the maximum DPI before app starts crashing
hope this helps others

If your problem is due to google sites being blocked by a firewall (your company's, your ISP's, your country's, or whatever) this may be helpful. Be aware that you will need a site on the other end, outside the firewall, to route your google play communications.
If that's not your problem, this solution won't help.
Usually you will know - only a few countries block google, it's highly unlikely that a commercial ISP would, and you will know whether you are trying to do updates on your company's network.
There's a host file in system-etc- delete that file and reboot your phone and see if that works..

[Q] No Connection (retry) with google play

I've been reading threads on this problem, have done everything I could find to try (including factory reset, reinstall 4.1.2 stock, install cm 10.2.1 and upgraded to 4.3 stock).
I cannot get google play to work. It fails immediately with No Connection (Retry). Occasionally, I get "Unfortunately, Google Play has stopped".
I've checked date/time, repartitioned with the PIT file, tried various ROMs, enabled/disabled download manager, google play, GSF, deleted my google account, tried creating a completely new account, wiped all my application data, installed/uninstalled various gapps versions, tried Market Enabler, proxying, deleting /etc/hosts, mounting /system as r/w. I've watched all the "100% guaranteed fix!" videos and searched for threads here, reddit, and other places.
I'm at the point now where reading a new or existing thread can take hours and produce no new insight, so I'm posting a completely new one.
Does anyone have any insight on this? I can get almost everything I need via apk, or amazon and samsung app stores. What have I not tried? What could be persisting over several different ROM installs, repartitioning, re-stocking and upgrading to 4.3. I swrz I've had it stripped down to the metal, almost, and it still won't work. It makes me wonder if somehow my IMEI or MAC address is blacklisted or something. Oh, yeah, I've got a new GSF id each time I reprovisioned, so it's not a blocked GSF id. I'd like to get my old gsf ID back, but to do that I need Titanium pro -- which I need google play to re-download my paid copy
Um... google maps works, gmail works, google play magazines and samsung hub work (until I try to download something, and it goes to google play). I've turned off two-step verification on google+ settings too.

I am assuming when you factory reset you didn't delete the actual app "data" which would have fixed the problem, or you have a sync or backup replacing the problematic data. Luckily all you have to do which should fix it is to go into application manager and clear all data related to the Google Play/Google Play services apps. (Cache, updates, etc) You may have to do the same to the Youtube app because for the STRANGEST REASON beyond my comprehension that was causing some sign in problems for the Play Store...
Once that's taken care of, try to sign in and download an app.
Hope this works for you!

[Completed] Google Services Error, tried everything

Hey guys,
I have no idea, in what section to post this thing, I am new on XDA... If you know better, just move this thread pls :3
And: please excuse my english, please correct me if there are some mistakes (and there will be )
My data:
I have a Samsung Galaxy A5 / A500FU, this is not very popular and there are actually no working Custom-ROMs out there.
I rooted it via Odin and I flashed a custom-recovery on it (TWRP), this was also pretty hard to find but it's working...
It is running on Android Stock Lollipop 5.0.2 (No updates available, it's running on latest)
How this happened:
I used Lucky Patcher to try out some patches on Google Play Store, so I first started the "In-App Emulation patch" and selected to save a backup of the apk,
to make shure I could just restore it, if anything goes wrong. Then, I installed the individual patch for the Play Store named "Support.InApp.LVL", after nothing changed on the Play Store,
I think I patched some sort of Services from Google Play too but I remember that it threw an error, so nothing changed on that. I discovered the option of installing a modified Play Store in Lucky Patcher and I realized that this patch was not neccessary so I restored the old Play Store. Then there were the first Errors I dont quite remember it, but It should be "Google Play Services has stopped" or something like that... Also the Play Store didn't worked then, I searched some on the Internet and I found a solution, where I just have log out from my google account and reconnect then. This were the point, where my problems really started. I spent the last 24 hours on searching for any kind of solution for my problem, because I just cannot log into my account. Also the whole time error's were thrown:
"Google Services was stopped"
"com.process.google.gapps stopped"
I tried a lot of things to solve that. I tried about 30 possible solutions for the diffrent errors, here are some(In order):
- I cleared data & cache from the google apps like Play Store, Play Services and GoogleServicesFramework
- I restarted my device after every change I made
- I tried a Soft-Reset (Press Off + Volume-Down for a few seconds until it restarts)
- I tried the Play-Store Fixer
- I disabled some Google Apps and I found out that the Disabling of "GoogleServicesFramework" is solving the "com.process.google.gapps stopped"-Error so far.
- I cleared the hosts.txt and disabled any sort of VPN and my Adblocker
- I uninstalled Updates from Google-Apps, because I thought that they would update themselfes to the current supported versions and I restarted my phone a couple times.
- I uninstalled complete Google-Apps, starting at the GoogleServicesFramework, which obviously causes some problems. I downloaded some apk's from it from the Internet (googleservicesframework.apk) and moved them into /system/app and restarted every time... After that I got a very old interface on logging into my google account, the error "com.process.google.gapps stopped" still consisted. After disabling the GoogleServicesFramework again, it solved the error again, but I still can't login into my account! I tried that downloading a few times (GoogleServicesFramework, Google Play Services & Google Play Store), but nothing helped. I also installed apk's from a Gapps-Package I got, with a few more Apps(anything that could have to do with Google Login), still the same.
- I flashed some Gapps-Packages with TWRP, that brought me back the lollipop login-screen, but the errors consist.
Now:
I can't do much with my phone, I'm being spammed with thoose Errors
"Google Services was stopped"
"com.process.google.gapps stopped"
And a lot of Apps are telling me that Google Play Services have to be updated, but to update it I have to log in, and that doenst work as you know already...
I really hope anyone out there has a solution for me
Thanks in advance, Dennis
P.S: I really dont want to make a factory-reset, also I dont think it will solve the error...

[Completed] flashing gapps?

So I recently updated a nightly to Cyanogenmod 13. Ever since. I keep getting this error saying 'Unfortunately, Google Play services has stopped' and a notification saying 'Google Play services wont run unless you update Google Play services'. I still have the Play Store, Youtube etc... but they don't work (except the odd one like Chrome). Should I flash the newest Gapps or will that leave me with two sets of gapps? How do I fix this? Any thoughts/ideas are appreciated. (note: there is no option to force stop or uninstall updates)

Unable to register with Google Play Services

Hi all
I've been searching on the internet on how to fix this but i can't seem to find a clear answer.
- Several apps crash and some apps report "Unable to register with Google Play Services".
- My device (8T EU) reports in the playstore that my device is not certified.
When looking on how to fix this i came across a way to register your device. Something i needed to do because i'm running lineageOS.
I tried this without succes but the page says that it's registered. Google Play however stayed the same.
Other things i've tried are:
- clearing cache for both Google Service Framework (GSF) and Play Store
- clearing data for both these apps.
None of this seemed to solve the issue.
From reading on the internet i learned that this started happening due to a change google made. That's why custom roms have to register.
Other thing i read: Oneplus is having an issue that's causing this. This article was a year old so i don't know if this is still the case.
So before i try to revert back to stock. Does anyone else have experience with this and if so, how did you solve this?
I'm currently running LineageOS 18.1 (the latest update 4 augutst 2022).
