C636B180 & C432B170 loosing association contacts ringtones with no reason - Mate 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi to all... There must be a bug with contacts ringtones because today was the second time in 2 weeks that with no reason all my associated ringtones to 200 contacts was lost and return to default ringtone.
That happens to me with C636B180 & C432B170 Firmware.
I had put the contacts to internal sd card in "ringtones" folder and I haven't use external memory card
The bad thing also is that emui doesn't support contacts group ringtone, so every time I will have to set 200 contacts from the start...
This was the main reason why I was rooting all of my phones so to transfer ringtones to system folder and never be lost

I also have seen this issue with notification sounds set in Google messenger or other apps that use sounds. They don't stick..

Μp3...

I've converted my mp3 to ogg.. Will see if that helps. System sound files are ogg type...
Sent from my NEXT using Tapatalk

OK, since I changed all mp3s to ogg type files I haven't had any sound association lose its place. It's been sticking so far.

to make a song a ring tone, you need to copy the music file over to your phone. it can be a .mp3 or .wav and maybe the apple file format too. But you want to copy it to:
windows\rings
or
my device\my documents\my ringtones
use active synch to copy the files from your PC to your phone
if you want your contacts to show up with first name first, click the contact and then click menu then click edit. Look at the option 'File as' and click it. it will bring a drop down menu.
i used microsoft outlook to edit all my contacts then synch up with active synch

Contact Cleaner?

So I'm coming from an HTC Touch HD that ran winmo 6.5. When we transferred my contacts from the sim to the new phone (captivate) the contacts show but it will not give some options like set ringtone for an individual contact. If I create a new contact, I get full options. Anyone have any apps or ideas on how to "format" the contacts towards the Captivate that will allow me to set ringtones, etc. I refuse to delete all contacts and remake them.
Thanks
Anyone? Bueller?
Is anyone else having this issue at least?

I'm having the same problem
Try this to see if it helps
Go into contacts
hit menu, more
import/export
export to sd card
hit menu, more
import/export
import to sd card
select phone
Hope that helps
I started a thread about it not too long ago.

Thanks!!!
So I tried the export/import to SD which didn't work. I ended up downloading an app to delete all of my contacts, did the export/import and it works now!
To add individual ringtones for imported contacts, get RingDroid. It's a known bug, but this fixes it. Of course, I set the default ringtone within the app and now it won't use any of my individual ones, but I've emailed the dev about that...

Try this (this works on most other android phones)
1. Create a folder in the root of your SD card called ringtones (lower case r at the front).
2. Put all the mp3 versions of the ringtones you want to use in this folder.
3. Reboot your phone.
4. Now, all the ringtones should show up when you go to select a ringtone for you phone.
5. Go to your contacts and pick the person you want to assign a custom ringtone for.
6. At that person's main contact page, hit the Menu button (the capacitive button at the bottom left of your phone) and select Options
There it should have a spot for assigning a custom ringtone for that contact.
You can also create a folder on the root of your SD card called notifications (also a lower case n at the beginning) and you can put in sounds you want to use for e-mail, SMS and other notications. On my Nexus you usually have to reboot after adding or removing files from these folders to be able to see them, and I would stick with an mp3 format as much as possible.
Also, there aren't any ways to add custom notifications for a person that I know of yet, outside of maybe a 3rd party app.
If you have any other general Android questions try searching XDA or Google for the answers. A lot of the google results will link back to XDA, but maybe for another device (but the answer will apply to most Android devices overall).

Google contacts dont seem to allow it. So I guess the question is how do we convert contacts from google to standard phone contacts.
I can't believe Samsung took out this important feature!

I can answer that...I had the same issue, and figured it out this evening.
Export your contacts in GMail to a VCard file, then dump that file onto the SD card on the phone.
Import/Export while in your address book, and make sure you select "Phone" and not your linked GMail accounts.
Problem solved.

awesome! gonna try it now! i've been looking for a way to do this
ok, so i tried this, and it shows a linked contact, the phone and the gmail. but in order for it to work, i'm having to make the phone the default not gmail, and then unlink the contact. does that make sense?
You don't need to import contacts. You can create a new contact on your "phone", not Gmail, with the same name. Afterward, the new contact will automatically linked to the Gmail contact. Then edit that contact and you will see a new tab called "Phone", inside that tab is where you can change the ringtone.
i like having all of my contacts synced to google for quick editing and for backup, will I have to create new contacts twice to assign them a custom ringtone? it seems we are missing a few important features.
this also affects group sms, since the sms program wont look at google groups, only local groups
this seems to be hit and miss for some reason. i was able to move my contacts to the phone, it linked them, and allowed me to edit the phone version to have a custom ringtone. the problem now is that sometimes the ringtone works other times it just goes to default. is there a way to not sync your gmail contacts to the phone and install them manually?
all of these work arounds are pretty stupid. The fact that samsung, disabled this feature, or that android doesn't support it is STUPID. If you do any of these steps you end up having duplicate contacts. Worse yet, on many menus, it will show 4 phone numbers (ie 2 for mobile and 2 for home). I can't belive such a fundamental feature is SOOOOO broke.

Ringtones for individuals

Ok I've loaded some ringtone files and notifications on to my SD card currently in
/mnt/sdcard/media/audio/notifications
Now my ringtone I've set as default plays when the phone rings as does my notification for txt(Sms) messages.
But if I try to assign a ringtone to a user it reverts back to default.
Ps I've just tried picking one of the other defaults and it does the same thing, so I don't it the location of my files that's the issue.
Anyone else able to set individual ringtones for people??
Don't put the files there. Make new folders on the sd card for Ringtones/Notifications/Alarms & put your files in whichever folder you want the sound to be
The files appear in the lists ok and as I said I can pick them for default ringtone and messaging.
The problem is that I can not assign an individual ringtone to a specific person regardless of its one of my own or one of the inbuilt ones.
try taking out of the folder you put them in & making folders like I suggested & then try it & report your findings.
Nope no difference. I still can not assign any alternative ringtone to an individual.
I can see the list and select anything, it plays and then soon as I hit ok, it goes back to the contact details and shows as default.
hmm that's odd. I don't know what to tell you. If someone else doesn't come up with a solution you may want to try a hard reset
have you rebooted since moving the files? Just a though.

Yep a soft rest was the first thing I did.
No biggie for now I'll keep digging around and see if I can figure it out, if not hard rest.
cheers guys
my custom ringtones are in a folder called "media" on the root of my sd card. with four folders inside notifications, ui, ringtones, and alarms. I have a separate default ringtone for calls then I have multiple contacts with different ringtones and my text app and gmail app both have separate ringtones. I have had no issues...
Use your Music app v3.0.211... to do it !
It has a colored note as an icon.

Ringtones and notifications

There any way to get new ringtones and notifications without root, tried with root explorer but obviously did not want to root my S7
Apk or other solution to get the ringtones and notifications in the media folder
Thank you for any help
You should be able to copy them there via a computer, it is what I did earlier today.
Ringtones & Notifications have folders setup already, just the same as alerts/alarms too, although I have seen some apps can not use some locations - generally ringtones and say sms notice is fine.
I solved
I created a folder named ringtones on external sd card and put my ringtones ... Rebbot my phone et voila, no need root to do this
so simple
Thanks
It's better to put those folders on internal storage than an external SD. Prior versions of Android, at least, would sometimes lose track of sounds stored on external storage and revert to the default sounds.
