This is what the big fuss was about. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note5

MM, oh how we've all longed for you. Really, I've had it out with almost the whole XDA community over you, but without further ado we finally have a taste of MM baked on our beloved T-Mobile Note 5.

I can say that I can see, feel, and touch, why it took T-Mobile so long to bake MM on our Notes. Let's start out by saying...WOW!!! The smoothness is amazingly improved, as well as the speed of things throughout the entire OS.
The fingerprint scanner has been vastly improved, not even a millisecond and I am in with a simple touch of my finger.
Transitions are lovely! Smooth scrolling and navigating were pleasantly a thrill to have seen improved.
Clean, sleek, and refreshing overall look of things.
The notification bar has been refreshed with a new look and feel, with welcoming new animations and color. I took a slight peek at leaked images of MM's rabid beta builds and was slow to judge, but happily stayed faithful until the OTA was released, and BOY! Was I right because I didn't like what I saw. But with an overall hands on, I've warmed up to the slightly new notification center.
Battery life.
Battery life has been dramatically improved. I haven't done any technical testing, but could tell in a day, and a half, the magic of MM is real.
Features.
I've bumped into many minor, but strongly welcomed changes throughout MM, and would love to share one that I thought was worth telling.
After taking a screenshot, I notice instructions pop up, and I was pleased to see a new addiction to the screenshot feature...
Now! This is how I've expected the Note 5 to come out of the box, and had high hope that MM would bring the improvements. Boy, was I right! The MM update did just that.
I'm sure you have a story or have found some new features that you would like to share. Feel free to add helpful tips and new findings here. Thanks for reading and enjoy your long awaited sweetness of MM.

touchwhiz slowness is still a big issue for me
i love my note 5 and i bought a nexus 6p i was blown away. i've always been into clean android so when i learned cm was almost impossible that's when i realized the phone wasn't for me. hopefully the note 6 isn't locked down like the s7.

You know, I like everything about Marshmallow except the finger print sensor seems to fail more often, probably as a result of the speed boost it got. That and having to have a password when I boot up my phone (passwords are nowhere near as secure as fingerprints so I was faced with the decision to either use my extremely long backup password I had with Lollipop or reduce the complexity and I opted for the latter) are the only real issues I have with it.

Did you know you can long press the Marshmallow after triple tapping android version in about device and play a little game?

Yes, it's kinda neat, but even the KitKat and Lollipop firmwares had the same
feature in them, it's nothing new it's only a different game and better graphics.

Yeah it was a pain in the ace though. I'm a pretty patient guy but that was ridiculous. Whatever, either way it's good to have it now finally and mostly because of doze. I was about to jump to Project Fi but that is a different story. Really wish this device could utilize Sprint towers as well.

It sure was. I'm so pleased with MM that I don't even care about N on the Note 5; personally, I think N will destroy or brick the Note 5...I think.
I own a 6p, I also wanted to try Fi, but I'm too lazy to try...whatever that means.

Yes it gets rid of all the fancy animations, but until Samsung fix this, its a temporary fix

Exactly what you'd expect, a quick dissolving effect when you go to the home screen, switch between apps etc.
Ha ha ha lets turn off the animation efects and this will make the phone faster...This make phone more ugly because you torn off visual efects, and nothing about overall procesor and work speed.NOTHING!
Wrong. I prefer the look without the animations and it does in fact make the phone much more responsive which is all good because lag sucks and that fix along with killing the S-voice on the home key makes the phone a whole lot better to live with.
I prefer them off. Much snappier. Thanks.

What's really interesting is that despite the tons of other threads about disabling transitions in developer options, he someone managed to make his phone 10 times faster than all of those! And it's even quoted in the thread title like the absolutely factual factoid that it is! Win!
Plus, as an added bonus, rather than simply making a duplicate thread with text, that takes only a few seconds to disregard, this is a link to Youtube... Quality all around.

It's mind blowing how many people actually complains that the s4 lags!
my s4 is quick and snappy. Stock touchwiz qualcom version.
Even with air gestures and s voice enabled, there is no sign of lag or stutter.

Full disk encryption performance?

Would anyone care to benchmark the phone with FDE turned off and on? I'm curious how much of a performance hit it is and whether they're using hardware to handle it.

Excellent question. Not silly at all. Ars Technica just wrote an article on it yesterday! http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015...yption-guide-protect-your-stuff-and-yourself/
Since we appear to have hardware encryption, there is absolutely no downside. Much more secure. A lot of people say only the paranoid encrypt, but there is a reason so many more people know what it is and apple has been doing it for some time.
Once we get root, it might make things a tiny bit more complicated by adding an extra step to flashing roms, but the added security is worth it.

Flashing ROMs on the Nexus 6 weren't an issue with encryption. Either they only encrypt the userdata partition or the keys are stored outside the areas typically formatted by TWRP.
Of course this means little until we try flashing on the Note 5. But I'm hopeful it won't cause headaches.

Awesome. That's good to know. There was actually an option to either encrypt the user portion of the device or encrypt the entire device when I did it I think. But I'm betting you're right. The keys are probably stored somewhere else.

The primary "Pro" reason to encrypt is data security. The main "Con" has been performance slow downs, but it looks like that is no longer the case with this device.
My work uses Google Device Policy to enforce encryption if I want Corporate email on my phone. They just want to ensure if I lost the device (or stolen) the data couldn't be compromised. Otherwise I have to get emails via a SSO login app, which blows. So to be productive while traveling, I have to encrypt.
Glad to see this device doesn't take a performance hit with encryption.

Take this with a grain of salt but the Software Updates page at T-Mobile has been updated and the Note 5 is on there. Now we all knew that it would be updated to Marshmallow but maybe this is a sign that we will see it sooner than later.

When this is released by T-Mobile will i need to un-root to get the OTA update? If so, will there be a root in the works for Android M? I am rooted on 5.1.1 BOH6 with Arter97 Kernel, Xposed and the latest TWRP. Just curious thanks for all the hard work devs.
My reason for asking is probably the same as anyone else. I want the newest OS but I want to keep the tweaks made possible through root such as, modifying the build.prop file to fix the RAM leak, better battery life through titanium back up by freezing apps and adding some features by editing the /data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db in SQLite Editor
Great, get ready for all the complaining about the update not being fast enough to arrive. Only to be followed up with complaints about how the update made the phone slow and the battery drain.

You won't have to unroot to update. Not with smart switch on your computer, however it will unroot your phone, and generally when android updates a whole system, root is lost till someone figures it out, when kit Kat first came out root took forever

International versions updated by Samsung haven't even gotten it, and historically they get it a month or more before the carriers in the US release theirs.

I'm lucky to get 2 and a half hours of on screen time.

Yikes @ 2 hours on screen time!! That's extremely wrong and you should get Samsung to send you another one since all of our 5s have a 1 year warranty through Samsung... I'm getting 7 to 13 hours screen time with the brightness set all the way up so something is not right with yours! I even downgraded back to Lollipop because of MM 6s bad battery life drain!

Really?! I would love to get 7 hours of on screen time! [emoji28] how would they send me another battery when the battery isn't removable?

Why don't you just downgrade back to Lollipop until they manage to get all the kinks figured out with MM 6... I have successfully proved you can downgrade on Verizon when we were all told it's impossible!! If that doesn't fix it, Samsung will send you another phone and you'll have to send yours back to them... That's how you do that.. Caall them an explain but don't make it sound like YOU did something because then they won't do it.
I am using mine on t-mobile and when ever I check for a system update it always says it's unaviable. Do I have to have a Verizon Sim in to check for the update.

If it's a Verizon phone no just download the firmware from sammobile or wherever you find it and flash via Odin but don't flash t-mobile on it.

Funny how you assume something such as that.. I'm a dev working gaining root for Verizon and you come along with less than 10 post and you're acting like a tough guy! If I was a "fool" I wouldn't be working on anything with the phones but you know something? It's people like you who come along and treat us devs on here like crap when if it wasn't for a lot of us no one would have anything! You should just disappear with that type of attitude because I can just stop all the work I'm doing and keep my Verizon kernel I built for myself and just leave xda altogether and maybe you can take over tough guy!

No differences in LTE speeds for me.
Here's another PSA: Sprint service in Austin, Texas (and surrounding areas) sucks!
I cant find anything new on my device at all.. There could be other things that could auto-install after the update via sprint ID app. ... I turned that of (with package disabler) as it kept installing bloatware immediately after I would uninstall it. That issue alone is worth the price of Package Disabler... or even installing the U ROM.
Anyone know how to tell if the bootloader has been updated?
I was hoping for some more functional AOD updates like the Note 7 has. At least we get the September security update.
So someone who's installed it in About Device what's the Android security patch level?

No AOD features added, battery life still sucks on this phone. I have a feeling with the Note 7 recall its going to be awhile before we get any of those features.

Yeah probably. To be honest I'm surprised we even got the September security update.
If I don't use the thing the battery life is pretty great, I can go almost 2 days on a weekend when I'm not using it much. But man, stream radio or music, it just eats it, which is weird because I'll eat more battery in an hour of streaming radio with the screen off than I will watching a show or movie off my SD card for 30 minutes.

That's why I'm glad I have a nexus 6p to play with and enjoy android N while my S7E sits in my nightstand lol. I regret buying the S7E man..
I do regret getting the S7E as well. I feel conned by all the hype and early reviews of this phone. I must say that after this update has settled in, battery life is better finally on this release. Too little to late. The phone is still laggy and struggles to close open apps and will still lock up for a few seconds as well. I am confident that Samsung's horid touchwiz is to blame as it happers the phone.

I think the lag is more from the Sprint bloat than the Samsung bloat b/c on the 935U ROM, I practically don't have any lag. My GS7E is faster than my Nexus 5X on the latest 7.0 Nougat.

I could totally see the sprint bloat causing that. This will be my last carrier phone. Not sure what's next yet but I'm eyeing the inevitable price drop on an unlocked HTC 10 during the holiday shopping season at the moment.

I've disabled the bloat, and have no performance issues, or significant lag, on my Edge. No problem closing open apps. You may want to look at what apps you have running in the background.
As far as new features, there's now an option to automatically set a default app or be prompted, and if you're prompted you can choose Always or Just Once.
