I am trying to restore text messages from my Samsung account but it hangs up around 25% and then says restore failed, network failure etc.. My wifi is fine.
Any solutions?
I have this same issue. It noted that it backed up successfully but fails at 30% complete.
Everything else restores fine.
Use sms backup and restore from the play store, way easier and takes a lot less time.

True... But I need to restore the msgs backed up to the Samsung account first. Everything was wiped.
I'm having the same problem. Trying to restore from a Samsung account backup, failed at 24% of SMS. Hoping someone will have a solution. (Note: this happens after flashing a custom Rom. I made the backup with stock Rom. Don't know if this is related.)
The exact error message is:
Failed to restore data
A network error has occurred. Some data is missing. To prevent losing the missing data permanently, try restoring your data again before backing up.

I always back up my SMS with "SMS Backup & Restore" from the Play Store. I've been using this app for a few months now and it has never given me issues. It always works after changing to a new ROM and restoring has always worked flawlessly.
But a few days ago I tried to restore my SMS using this app. It said it was successfully restored, but when I went into the Messages app. It showed "No messages". Even if I try to send a new text, Messages app force closes. So I rebooted, still "no messages". Rebooted again into recovery cleared cache and dalvik and rebooted. Now in the Messages App, I see only some of the old message that were restored but not all of them. I tried to restore again and the same thing happened "no messages". So I repeated the steps above and eventually after several reboots and clearing caches I finally get all my texts back. I even tried using a different SMS backup and restore app but it would not even restore, it just failed.
I have over 1500 texts backed up but I use to have over 2000 and this problem never happened.
Has anyone else had this problem? I need help with this.
This first started when I flashed Hyperdrive RLS6 and tried restoring. And every Rom I flash after that gives me the same issue.
First things first, I'd say try clearing the messaging apps data(in manage apps) and fixing permissions(in custom recovery, advanced). Then restore.
Something that might be noteworthy, the app SMS Backup & Restore uses a proprietary method and file extension, that makes it hard to debug. When you create the backup, does any error/warning message come up or does it say 100% successful?
Also, I'd recommend using Titanium Backup. Just search for "Messages" and it will backup the messages in plain .xml which could be more consistant.
My 2 cents
Device info (just in case it is needed):
Samsung Galaxy Nexus (toroplus)
ROM - Slim Bean
Kernel - Lean Kernel
App - Titanium Backup Pro (purchased key)
My problem:
I have A LOT of SMS/MMS messages on my phone. I like to restore ALL of them between ROM flashes. I usually use Appextractor, but now it is NOT working and does not restore my SMS/MMS. (I am not flashing from MIUI/CM to MIUI/CM so that isn't the issue.) I want to use Titanium backup as my go-to backup and restore app. The only problem is, restoring my SMS/MMS the traditional way (backing up the "app" icon with the sms // backing up to XML) takes WAY too long. Appextractor did this in seconds. Now, I would like to restore my SMS from my nandroid backup from within Titanium backup. I have tried enabling migrate system data, and restoring "Messaging" from the nandroid backup but it does not restore my SMS/MMS.
My question is: How can I successfully restore my SMS/MMS from a nandroid using titanium backup? I have emailed their support and have not gotten a reply in a few days. OR if you know why Appextractor (not the beta) has suddenly stopped working, that would be appreciated too.
PLEASE DO NOT:
I don't mean to sound like a ****, but I am not interested in hearing replies/comments like this:
Why do you have so much SMS/MMS?
Use "this app" to do it, it works! (UNLESS it can restore tens of thousands of SMS quickly, as Appextractor did)
Or suggest not keeping them. I am going to keep them, and would like to find a solution to this problem.
Thanks!
RESOLVED: (thanks to nobody on XDA)
Needed to restore Messaging data in Titanium and NOT messaging. Did not see the actual SMS/MMS before.

Restore "Phone/Messaging Storage" with DATA only in Titanium backup. And make sure migrate system data is checked in preferences.

I found through trial and error why all the apk and nandroid extractors only work on certain parts of image,if you are trying to for example extract your text messages, only the application the phone has registered as the default application for texting is able to make mods. if you switch whatever extracting program you are using in settings to default sms program it will work as it did before kitkat. hope this helps......
P.S
make sure you remember to switch the default back to normal as soon as you are done and reboot your phone before you text anyone,

I made a nandroid using TWRP on my Moto X running 4.4.2. Now I am updated to 4.4.4 and want to extract my texts messages from my 4.4.2 nandroid. I selected the Phone/Messanging Storage for extraction, data only. Titanium B/U extracts the texts fine and the messanging app works fine UNTIL I reboot - after rebooting I can send texts but not receive them anymore.
Any thoughts on why Titanium B/U is messing with my 4.4.4 messanging app?

They're in the format for whatever you exported them for. Soooo 4.4.2 in your case.
For example, restore the 4.4.2 Nandroid, export with https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.zegoggles.smssync&hl=en , install 4.4.4, reimport with that too. Or restore 4.4.2 Nandroid, update to 4.4.4 'normally', then you got them in 4.4.4 format.

The text restore fine, it is just that after I restore them I can't receive texts. I can send texts, just not receive them. So Titanium B/U is doing more than just restoring my texts, it is messing with the messanging app somehow. I suspect it may have something to do with the APN.
I have seen others post on other forums about having this problem.

FYI - when I used SMS B/U and Restore I could send and receive texts but it couldn't restore all of my texts, either.

You mean return to 4.4.2, unroot and then take the 4.4.4 OTA? I am likely going to try that. Since my Bootloader is already 4.4.4 it should be fine. From what I recall being posted here in the past, the OTA installer will recognize that my bootloader is up to date and move on to the next item and not try to patch a 4.4.2 bootloader.
I will search the thread to make sure I am remembering this correctly, but IIRC the poster who first posted this was very knowledgeable.
I also could try doing it through the Motorola Device Manager.

Noob/idiot alert.....
I've just tried to restore my SMS's by TiBu, but I think I've f'd up a bit.
I ticked 'data only' in TiBu and restored 'phone/messaging storage', but it seems restoring from a HTC M7 Sense backup to an M7 5.1 GPE rom doesn't quite work. (I stupidly thought data would be compatible)
Now the phone just keeps popping up com.android.phone has stopped. no matter how many times I click it keeps popping up.
Unfortunately I didn't make a backup in TiBu before trying this out.
I'm sure I can fix it with a factory reset, or at worst a re-flash, but I'm away from my computer and wifi for a few more hours yet.
Is there a way I can un-do what I did, or fix this in some way, in the mean time?
** IGNORE **
I remembered I had a backup of the original rom, so I've just restored that for the mean time.
I am usingSamsung Galaxy Y pro Duos. GT 5512.
To install Whatsapp+ I had to uninstall whatsapp. I am not able to install Whatsapp+ (and Yes I am installing GB variant of Whatsapp+). It shows "Application not installed".
Now when I have installed original Whatsapp. I am asked to restore from the backup. When I tap on restore, it Crashes at 84% and shows a error. I don't want to lose the backup.
PS1: I have managed to solve the crashing problem' see the solution in the posts down.
PS2: I am still unable to get Whatsapp+ installed. It says "Application not Installed. Can anybody help in this regard?
It's advised to restore to the same backed-up version of Whatsapp

Try to uninstall Whatsapp & install once again, or if you prefer to check older versions: http://whatsapp-messenger.en.uptodown.com/android/old
It it doesn't help- leave only the latest backup file + 'msgstire.db.crypt' in the 'Database' folder of whatsapp. Other option is to check if you got
several whatsapp folders stored in device's external/internal storage, and leaving the newest one

Hi,
This issue is interesting and I have been looking for options, so you can solve your problem. If the problem is the version, as sasan_blue says, you can go to the Aptoide web, and search the old versions of whatsapp there. I was able of download different versions of whatsapp on my PC from that web.
I can't paste urls...
EDITED: Sorry, I was writing this thread while amirTor gives his answer. The English is not my language mother and take long to write. I think is best the amirTor solution.

Thanks Guys. I got it solved by completely uninstalling whatsapp using Titanium backup app, and installing it again. It was a problem of incomplete uninstallation. (I had rebooted the device before the uninstall process finished). The problem persisted because I have been uninstalling using regular method. Also it was not a problem of a corrupted backup in my case( as I had thought).
PS. I had installed an older version too. It asked me to check my date settings. it didn't peroceed any further. I guess it was becoz of the outdated version.
HI, i have installed and rstored whatsapp a million times or so, when flashing and switching between roms. last night i tried something funny, and it cost me tooo much.
I tried to install whatsapp for another number(my phone is dual sim), while sms verification was happening, it got registered via my previously registered whatsapp no. Now even after i deleted the new no. account,i am still not able to get my old account back. when i give my old number, it doesn ask for sms verification, and goes to local backup directly, but fails there and throws error. on the other hand, i can verify the account, but cannot restore all my messages.
Please help, as my msgs are quite important..!
il hit the thanks button..!

You can solve this problem by registering your new number again and restoring your old number's chats.
Once you are able to restore your old number's chat by registering on the new number. You can now change the number officially by using the 'change number' feature in the WA settings.
See if this trick works for you.
Good luck.

Hey thanks for the response,
Things arent way the its supposed to...even if im trying to sign up using another account, still the verification is not being done and whern restoring is trying to happen, it force closes or shows a message that it cannot restore msgs in the server
if u know any solution please let me know, its pretty annoying without whatsapp for a week and i need those old messages..its pretty important.
I have done flashing roms a 100 times and never faced this issues, and now it aint going at all..
Ok. copy the backup database some where safe.
Delete your new number account ( from within the WA account settings)
Remove the WA using titanium backup. (you need to be rooted for TB to work)
Reinstall the WA.
See if you are able to register your new number.
Use WhatsApp recovery app to restore you account information, the tool is available free of cost.
If no chats are being restored while reinstalling Whatsapp and you want to restore from a local backup... Try to uninstall and reinstall Whatapp and simply take a local backup of the empty chats and copy the entire filename (Ex: msgstore.db.crypt12) and delete this backup file.. Now paste the backup file from where you want to restore the chats in the Whatsapp databases folder and rename it with the name that was copied from latest backup file (msgstore.db.crypt12).
Clear WhatsApp data (from Settings -> Apps-> WhatsApp-> Clear Data). When you launch Whatsapp now, it will prompt again for the verification details etc. Skip the google drive step and Whatsapp will restore all your chats from your desired local backup. But please make sure you have lot of free space on your device. I cleared about 3gb of data from device memory in order to get this working.
It worked for me when I finally was about to give up after trying for 3 days..

Hello, i'm having exactly the same problem in the same place (84%), I have not rooted my phone what makes impossible the solution with titanium. Any Ideas?
The backup folder has a lot of directories, should i delete some of them?
app_download_internal
app_minidumps
app_textures
app_webview
cache
code_cache
databases
files
lib
no_backup
shaders
shared_prefs
is there any log to check the error messages?
thank you.

PS1. Erasing some directories, now i can get the 97%
unable to restore whatsapp messages
i switched to a new phone. I copied whatsapp folders- Databasse and media to the laptop. The database file has correct name as suggested by whatsapp faq- msgstore.db.crypt and it is version 12 only. But when i install whatsapp it does not take that local backup and asks to check google drive. I don't have backu on google drive. Later i tried new idea- I disconnected internet after verifification of mobile number and yes so it prompted - >backup found- Restore> i tapped restore, but still my chats didn't backedup, the restore processing also did not took lace, i turned on internet after tapping restore. what's the matter? please help. I have some really important stuff. You all are tech enthusiast here. i hope you can help me in this minor problem. I have local Backup, i have mobile, i have aplication. What else is needed??

I created an XML backup of my messages (SMS & MMS) in titanium backup. However, when I try to restore the file, I get an error, "Data restore failed for "Messages (SMS & MMS)"."
Interestingly, if I delete all my MMS messages and do another backup and then try to restore, it works. It seems that the MMS messages are somehow corrupting the data restore.
Does anyone have any ideas around this? I'm utilizing auto/indirect app processing mode, for the record. It seems like titanium is just having trouble reading it's own files if they contain MMS... not sure why that would be though.
Also for the record, I can't use SMS backup & restore (sorry!), I'm limited to titanium for what I'm trying to do.
[FWIW I'm trying to migrate from hangouts/project fi to native sms - see https://www.reddit.com/r/ProjectFi/comments/5s53vf/tool_export_and_convert_hangouts_smsmms_to/ which outputs a titanium compatible XML file. This file was what was originally giving me trouble restoring in titanium. However, I tried backup & restoring my own sms/mms messages to troubleshoot, which led me to the situation above, completely unrelated to this tool I'm using].
Sorry for the text blob, but I figured I'd give some more info in case anyone cared... Thanks in advance!!
I just started facing a similar issue. SMS/MMS backuped by "SMS Back up and Restore app" on one phone. Restoring on another phone fails. If I do not restore MMS, it works with no issue.
Did you find a solution?
Thanks,

It's been a while, but I managed to figure this out at least: For some reason if I long press on the xml file to restore in titanium, it works. If I just tap it, it doesn't. Trying long pressing... it worked for me. Can't guarantee it will still work this far in the future though, but worth a shot.

Came from an unofficial LineageOS, then moved to the official one, before that I backed up apps+system data through titanium backup. I managed to restore everything (even contacts) successfully, except for messages. When I restore them (data only), and open the messaging app, I see all my messages for a second, then they eventually get deleted.
EDIT: I found someone who has the same issue, but I de-google'd mine. So i don't have hangouts. https://android.stackexchange.com/q...es-with-titanium-restores-then-deletes#126246
