No write access on Marshmallow USB OTG storage - Galaxy S6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I use FAT32 storage on my USB OTG storage. On lollipop i was able to delete or copy files to the storage but since I've updated to Marshmallow recently, i only have read access.
Any idea how to get around this?
I've tried the stock file manager as well as File Manager app.

I had same problem with mine when I used my mac to format usb, partition map was GUID instead of master boot once i changed that worked ok. Not sure if that's any help to you though.

Have you ever turned off USB debugging?

I have no idea what GUID or master boot is. But i did format it on Windows using 'guiformat'. Something I found on the web and have used previously many times.

I just tried that and it didn't make a difference.

Same here, having problems with OTG after updating my S6 to marshmallow, should have read this forum before updating... bummer...

I think I found the solution, I noticed that my S6 running marshmallow, when I plug my otg to the phone, I accidentally made the ES File Explorer the default, I can't access the OTG via Samsung's default File Manager. So I went to Applications, go to ES File Explorer, clear defaults... plug my OTG Again, this time don't choose ES File Explorer, if it pops out, cancel it. Then the Samsung's File Manager will now recognize the OTG, and boom, I can now use my OTG properly via Samsung's File Manager... Try it out...

It appears i HADN'T tried the file manager app (i thought i did). That app DOES allow deleting. It's just the stock samsung file explorer that doesn't allow write/delete access.
Problem solved.

Well. It looks like file manager intermittently has write access. Very odd.
It's stopped now. So i guess i did previously try it.
Very frustrating.

Storage is r/w by default-I think,
Are you expeariencing any troubles with writing to external storage?
Edit: on the app level:
An app asks permission to write to external, on instalation
You- as a user are always allowed to write to...
This in app option is perhaps needed when a part of internal memory,
Is used as sd card- as it is in tablets or htc one x...
or it is an ext (system ) partition, that option is concerned about...
anyway, I'm using es... for ages now, and never have had any troubles with
mounting sd card as r/w

Yeap. Otherwise i wouldn't be able to change and save the others 2 (main root and /system), which i can.

That's right ... the in initial state should be RW. I can manipulate the files from Es FE (cut/copy/paste and delete), but i can't change any file's properties or permissions. Strangely, the only ways i can see the storage via usb connection are MTP and PTP (and same behaviour - cut/copy/paste and delete - but no properties changes available - greyed out). If i switch to Media Storage, the PC only displays Removable Storage and prompts me to insert it. Huh?

Are you running- by any chance- any aosp 4.2.2/4.1.2 rom?
I have the same symptoms on them,
just installed third party app from the market,
and my problem is gone (pc)
as for es.. I've never had any troubles with changing atributes
or permissions
Edit: it is this brand new shiny inrerface of es file explorer,
that makes many- including me- to get confused and sometimes lost- at first

Using a CM10.1 (see my signature). I'm starting to think that the problem isn't ES's. When i connect the device as a Media Storage i get the following feedback from the status bar: "Connected as an Installer" ... never seen this before.
Will try to restore an earlier backup to check if lest an app is conflicting ... dunno ... I'll return the result.
P.S.
You're right about ES's fresh interface ... a little confusing after using the ancient one for a l.l.long time. Missing the pop-up on long press, instead of (the new) select feature. Eh ...
As for atributes of the files on sd card- I think it does not matter what they are,
because an external storage is a slave disc for the system..
which uses it only as storage...
different story would be if a part of such a slave drive is partitioned to be used as an extention
of an internal memory (ext partition )
but then it is not been seen from the level of a file manager...
Edit: I belive, the trouble with mounting usb disk drive,
is (or at least I think) purely on the system's side..
Would not be bad, if somebody else could comment,
or clarify the matter further though
strange that it dont work coz i just tried it and no problems
menu/root explorer (grant permissions) /mount r/w and i can delete, copy/paste, everything really.
Have u tried uninstalling es file explorer then installing it again?

Yes, uninstalled it and reverse, but no change. I restored an earlier backup with only a few (necessary) third-party apps, but the problem is still there. Also, if anyone can answer, what the heck is "Connected as an installer" status when selecting Media Storage? Thanks.

[Q] USB OTG on 4.4.4

Okay - I had USB OTG working *before* the 4.4.4 update by enabling it via the QualcommSettings app and installing StickMount. I'm rooted and have an unlocked bootloader.
After upgrading to 4.4.4, I can't get my Meenova usb stick to mount. I've tried with & without StickMount. I re-enabled "USB Mass Storage" in QualcommSettings, but it doesn't seem to stay enabled.
StickMount says it mounts the device to /sdcard/usbStorage/sda, but when I navigate there with ES File Explorer, the folder is empty.
Has anyone gotten USB OTG to work with 4.4.4? If so, how? Any help or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks!!

With Explorer/Root Explorer it is storage/usbdisk. But unrooted as I am, I cannot write a file to the root of the card, a folder is OK.
The not writing to the root of the OTG/card is some bug in Explorer. Solid explorer works fine.
I'm rooted and have an unlocked bootloader. 4.4.4 Now otg works fine for me wothout stickmount. usb drive mount /mnt/media_rw

Uninstalled StickMount and tried it again yesterday, and it's working fine now. The other day, I had looked at storage/usbdisk also, but the folder was empty. I'm not sure what I changed to get it working, so unfortunately can't help anyone if they're seeing the same behavior I was.

ES used to (on 4.4.4)
I did notice that my Thermal Seek camera (also USB OTG) works fine with Lollipop, so I guess ES has to be updated.
Yes, I forgot about ES. It does open it. I had been using solid because I like it better but I also forgot that stock Android is NOT AOSP and that was my problem. It does see it now with ES so, problem solved. Also it reads both fat32 and NTFS. too bad it doesn't read exFAT

That is so strange - I use ES and I am not able to get it to recognize my USB flash drive! Sheeeeeeesh! :crying:
Well we are all seeing strange things with 5.0 For example, root is not working as it should, apps like App Quarantine can't seem to properly disable some system apps or Google Apps, I can't seem to be able to correctly install a recovery and most apps that should allow to do reboot options (like flashify or twrp manager) don't work. My guess is that we'll have to wait a few days until development has matured a bit..
Then, I can use/see/write my USB by otg only with Es explorer without stickmount or I have to use stick mount mandatorily ?
sorry if you give the answer already but did not understand English very well
Always i used stick mount, but it would only need/use ES Explorer
I can only add that on nexus7 (2013) official 5.0 OTG doesn't work either.
I can access external drive through ES or stickmount, but the system itself is 'blind'.
Using custom kernels (e.g elementalX) built for lollipop which in theory should support OTG break stickmount (and still no OTG support, possibly something in OS beyond the kernel) - internal memory is not mounted anymore to /storage/sdcard0. ES still works though.

Yes, you can just use ES Explorer to use USB OTG devices. No need for stickmount.
Update your drivers.

Yes in 5.0.
I have the google stock image, rooted with CFAR and all I use is ES Explorer to see my USB OTG. You have to be in either NTFS or Fat32 for it to read the drives.
It does show as a USB 1002 like you say and if you click on it it will open a new window with the contents of the drive. That's all I do.
No tweaks or apps to mount the drives.

Hi all,
I can see on ES Explorer the US1002 tab like you, and if I click on it, I can see the file inside the USB storage, but i can't put other files on the drive, even if I try to create a new file, the app show up a pop up with the message "unsupported operation", instead the copy from the USB drive to the phone is possibile.
This happens since I flashed the Stock Lollipop build.....
Have you tried to copy or create a file on the drive?

Probably kernel related. Might need to export to usb otg properly. Probably mounted with no permissions. You can check when OTG is plugged in by typing the "mount" command into a terminal emulator

Have you tried just browsing a network share from File Commander and using that to copy directly to the SD card?
I haven't tried this yet myself, I just use USB to copy stuff as its faster but I think File Commander has better access to storage being the system file manager.
why not use a card reader for the sd card? the issue with kitkat was applications/data writing to the sd card unless the fix was applied, from what you are saying you are having issues copying from the computer to the sd card when its in the phone

Well I know that works but I want to get it working to copy directly to the phone the freedom and access ya know.
I tried last night with File Commander and it worked fine.
Set up a a share of the music folder on my HTPC.
I then used the Local Network function in File Commander with the following settings.
Domain: workgroup
Server: HTPC/Music/
User: (username)
Password: (password)
Server name is just the name of the network device and the name of the shared folder.
I was able to copy over folders of music from the HTPC to my phones SD card directly over wifi. It wasn't particularly fast though but both devices are on wifi.
File Commander could be a bit better at selecting multiple folders at a time though and whiles it's copying, you can't use the app for anything else.

Download FolderMount. Run it, grant it root access, and then let it patch the system to allow full write access to external storage. After the phone reboots and you've verified it works, you can uninstall FolderMount.

USB storage restricted using OTG

Hi,
When I connect 2 different USB sticks or 1 TB HDD with Sony otg adaptor to my Z5 and tap "detect usb device" the message "USB storage is restricted. A security policy restricts the use of USB storage" appears. File commander doesn't shows USB storage, but ES file explorer shows and lets work with sticks (in HDD I can't write or create files/ folders but could see contents). In settings--storage tapping "Mount USB storage" causes the same message about restriction but command "erase usb storage" works. Backup app doesn't shows "back up to USB" option too.
What could cause this?

If i understood well you can read/write from the 2 USB sticks using ES file explorer...then, what are the the problems you could not solve?
Maybe the message is related to some special feature (encryption, app installation,...) that is not usable with those devices.
Or, does the sony OTG adaptor/the sticks have a button to prevent Write and only allow Read?
However, If you are rooted, there are a bunch of apps on the store (paragon, ....) that allows you to mount USB sticks and might work better than the bundled software. It still depends a lot on stock kernel functions, though

Problems are as i said: backup not sees usb storage. USB sticks have no butons Of course it's caused by some app or instalation settings i think. I checked security settings but nothing works. just disable xperia configurator in device administrator
Hi,
After update to android 6 problem resolved. By the way I switched xperia configurator off when dealt with my problem with android 5 but things were the same..
Hi,
Sorry to jump an old thread, but I've had this problem on the Swisscom ROM for a while. It originally worked fine, but got disabled with one of the first OTA updates.
I have tried the suggestions here, but no luck so far.
Can I ask which ROM you are using and if it works fine for you now? If so, I'll flash the same localised ROM which I guess will resolve the problem.
Thanks
David
