Give up and go stock? - Moto G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

A burst of fearsome energy overtook me tonight and I just had to root my phone
Kingoroot, Kingroot, Towelroot etc didn't work. Then I read about this thing called TWRP.. sounds great, I said.
Unlocked the bootloader, got TWRP recovery going, tested it out, got ready to add SuperSU and the one that gets rid of bootloader unlocked screen.
Boot loop. Stuck on the Motorola logo. It aint going anywhere.
I've tried all of the suggestions I could find so far here, like using mfastboot to clear cache and user data. It's looking like a dead end. I was following the instructions on a youtube video so of course I didn't back up anything before I tried SuperSU Should I cut my losses and try the stock firmware, or could I do more damage that way?
This is going to ruin my weekend, isn't it?

If you can still boot to your custom recovery its really not a big deal. Just install the ROM zip of your choosing and appropriate gapps. If you are boot looped when it starts to reboot just hold in the power button for about 10 seconds till it powers off then press and hold volume down while still keeping the power button pressed. After about 5 seconds or so of holding both buttons stop pressing both together. If done correctly you should be at the boofloader screen.

Yes, I can get to the bootloader. Factory reset there and reset using TWRP doesn't fix the bootloop. That's kinda where I am right now.

Uninstalling SuperSU did it! I used the un-su zip file.

Do you have one of the following 1)Motorola USB drivers for your PC and fastboot or mfastboot/adb setup for your device? 2)ROM zip on your internal storage. 3)A USB OTG drive? Any of these will work. Let me know which you have and we will go from there.

It's ok, I'm back in business - the issue was the installation of the latest version of SuperSU. I used Install from SD Card in TWRP to install the SuperSU remover and it booted fine.
Taking my time now because I need this phone, I'm living in a new country. I backed up and tried an older SuperSU but didn't work - I suppose by doing a factory reset I might have done something that stops a root.
Edit: this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63615067

Download the latest stable build of super SU from Chainfires site here. http://download.chainfire.eu/supersu-stable
Then just flash the zip you downloaded in TWRP. You don't need the systemless version of SU if that is what you were trying to do.

I think that was the one that bootlooped it. I'll be doing a backup first this time
My main reason for posting my solution in this thread is in case the same thing happens to someone else. Removing SuperSU with that un-su.zip solved it for me.

wipe didnt wipe

Hello all
just did the ICS w/root flash upgrade to my xoom cause it was wheezing, on it's last leg. funny thing after using the modded cwm factory reset/ wipe this that everything.
then used cwm to install the upgrade. installed root explorer. and to my surprise all my old data/dir's are still on the sd card
WTF this is gonna be a problem? or not?
thanks
Calm down, why is your question so angry? LOL
You are now rooted - so even a factory data reset from CWM will not erase your internal SDcard Data. It is not a problem, you can manually erase your un needed data from Root Explorer if need be. Is all good, no worries.
endless loop
Thanks for your reply. this xooms been giving me fits for a 3 days now.
started having to reinstall a few new games. then TB started messing up
did a factory reset and lost use of the home button.
so i tried to install tiamat, on reboot all i get is a little white revolving kinda circle on the bottom right of screen.
tried installing wingray that worked. til i powered the xoom down. on reboot it gets stuck in the pulsating ics screen. only way to get it to boot is too reflash and then it boots
so everytime i power down it gets stuck in loop.
can anybody help with this? is it hardware?
thank you

Sounds like it might be the software. What system image did you use to root? Did you flash the GAPPs as well, when you flashed the ROM? Unroot, go back to stock. Start from scratch Re-Root then flash the Wingray ROM and the GAPPS from here : This is a pretty solid ROM Let us know.

Thanks
just found the way to flash back to 3.01,
now it boots everytime i turn it back on. geez that ics was a nightmare, wonder why?
first thing it did was start downloading updates
what version is the easiest to root?
holy crap, it's only updated like 6 times now, its now working on ics

I really does not matter which version you are on before root, because you are going
to push a dif image on there anyway. Great you are back to stock and have a clean
slate to work with!
1. Downloading the rooting-update zip file.
Download the zip file from here - http://goo.gl/Om9aP
Now place this on your external sdcard. - Sorry this is a requirement at the moment, like I said this is a bit rushed.
2. Flashing recovery
1. Download this Recovery image. http://bit.ly/iLRAIV (place this image in you SDK PlatformTools Folder, or which ever folder that contains your adb.exe)
2. If your device is locked, now is a good time to unlock it.
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot reboot
3. Flash recovery
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash recovery recovery-Tiamat-R4c-100611-1150-cwm.img
Once you have verification on your device that this has been flashed, reboot your device by holding volume up + power.
Then 3 seconds after you see the Motorola logo, hit volume down. You should now see "Android Recovery" in the top left corner. Hit volume up to boot into recovery.
4. Flashing the Xoom-Universal-Root.zip file.
If you're in clockwork mod recovery you can continue (This recovery image will say it is clockwork mod) . If you're not looking at clockwork mod, then you need to repeat step 3 again.
In cwm, go into "install zip from sdcard" -> "Choose zip from sdcard", then select the Xoom-Universal-Root.zip file you downloaded.
Note: use the volume buttons to navigate and the power button to select
Reboot your device and then welcome to your rooted device!
the xoom came along way today, from semi brick to ics with cwm. but the universal root tool did not work root explorer/cwm cannot get su.
dang sure learned alot today
i found the update.zip in that script from xxlordxx and did all that but it did not work

It depends on your taste. I sent you the link to that ROM because it is STABLE and you can flash it just to make sure that your system is working correctly. It's best to try a few diff ROMs and see which one best suits your needs!---------- Post added at 12:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 12:32 PM ----------

[Q] Can't boot into recovery

Trying to install CyanogenMod for my razr maxx HD. Recently used RSDlite to install 183.46.10 after OTA KK update kept failing. Then used towelroot to root and motopocalype to unlock bootloader. Fastboot screen shows bootloader is unlocked with status code: 3.
I then followed the instructions on the CyanogenMod site to flash CWM 6.0.4.4 recovery using fastboot, and all appeared to work fine.
However, when I try to reboot into recovery, nothing happens. I get hung up on the motorola dual core flashscreen for about a minute or two, then the screen goes black, then the phone reboots normally.
I tried flashing a different copy of CWM, tried TRWP, and tried several third party apps from Google Play store to boot directly into recovery using software reboot instead of hardware keys - all with the same results. I even tried flashing custom CWM recovery using ROM Manager and Rashr, same result.
Do I have a corrupt recovery partition? Any suggestions for how to fix?
You need to install a recovery for that phone specifically.
http://androidhosting.org/Devs/Dhacker29/
Use the recovery files found here.
Edit: on the site I posted, browse to the msm8690 folder. There you will find the recovery files.

Those recovery aren't sticking for me. Does anyone have a suggestion to fix that issue.
Pushing the buttons doesn't work.
The only thing that is working is place the phone in fastboot mode and flash the recovery to my device three time and then I will go straight in recovery and there it is.

Your phone has been upgraded to Kit Kat and the bootloader unlocked, correct? The two recoveries linked to are for phones that already have already been upgraded to KK.
If so, power off your phone.
Then, hold down volume up and then press and hold power. After a few seconds, let go and the boot menu should come up.
Use Volume down to select "Recovery" and then hit "Volume Up". That should boot you into the custom recovery, depending on which one you flashed.
I prefer TWRP. CWM seemed buggy and it wouldn't always boot into it. A lot of times, I'd get a blank screen and would have to reflash it.
Another option is, when it's booted up, hooked up your phone to your pc and use adb to reboot it into recovery using "adb reboot recovery".

Yep.. I had some issue with my devices. I tried the update well root and the devices didn't want to boot up anymore. So I had to RSD lite the devices back to health. So I do have the latest software for the devices. I guess. I am going to use Twrp since you say it boots fine from the boot menu.

Is your bootloader unlocked? If not, that is your problem. You need to root, and then unlock the bootloader before you can flash TWRP and use CM.

[Q] Recovery Boot Loop Problem

Had a problem. Hope someone with experience can give me a few answers.
Nave new t-mobile Note 3, SM-N900T. Stock 4.4.2 KitKat Touchwiz rooted.
Rooted to enable SDFix to use SD card as I want to use it.
Everything great! No problems.
Thought it would be wise to have a Nanoid backup.
Opened Rom Manager and made One change in prefrences. I set it for external SD card storage. (mistake?)
Went to 'Backup current Rom' in Rom manager, started it and it started to reboot. Shut down and restarted in a 'Recovery' boot loop??
No matter what I did, Tried holding power, up volume and home button, nothing. Boot loop continued. Removed battery, waited, as soon as I re-installed battery it instantly went back into recovery boot loop.
I don't know what I did, I kept removing battery and trying again and again and all of a sudden, it booted up back to KitKat and now everything is working great again. No problem on any standard reboot.
What happened? I have used this same set up on my S3 and never had a problem.
I would like to backup the current setup for any future problems. But now, I'm afraid to even try.
I removed Rom Manager and re-installed. Made sure that the storage location was reset to internal and it should be OK??
What did I do when I got out of the Recovery boot loop??
So, afraid to try again. Don't want the boot loop again.

Hi. What recovery are you using?
If you haven't installed a custom recovery, then that explains your issue. Basically, the app scheduled a custom recovery script which kept failing in the stock recovery. You should normally be able to reboot into the system holding the power button, thus skipping going to recovery. This also resets the recovery script so everything is back to normal.
Nandroid is normally only possible using a custom recovery like TWRP or CWM.
I saw that you might be able to perform a Nandroid without restarting the phone (so without a custom recovery) using this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.h3r3t1c.onnandbup&hl=en
I have never tried it. Looks promising though.
But please note that you won't be able to restore the backup without a custom recovery.
EDIT: If you do have a custom recovery, why not boot in recovery mode and make the backup from there?
Cheers
Recovery Boot Loop Problem
I have CWM installed. Setup thru Rom Manager as I have done before on other phones.
Tried it again, same thing. Over and over. Constant reboot. Dosen't matter if I hold the power button or try different ways, same thing.
It says: Recovery booting
Recovery is not seandroid enforcing
Set warranty bit:recovery
If I remove battery and wait a couple of minutes, I can install battery and it dosen't start till I hold power button.
So I held volume down, home button and power button and booted into download mode. From there I cancelled and it rebooted normally.
Everything I've read on boot loops always say 'boot into recovery'. I only wish I could. That's the bootloop.
Any idea on what's wrong?
Thank you for your time and trouble.

Have you tried booting directly into recovery?
So just shut off your phone and then open it by holding volume up + home + power. It should boot into recovery. If it doesn't, I recommend installing cwm or TWRP using Odin instead of Rom manager.
Might be a problem with your current recovery.

Yes, I tried. Does the same thing.
I've never used Odin. All the info I've read mentioned downloading USB drivers and using different .tar files. Checking this and that.
Nothing I've ever done.
No experience with it.
Never had a reason before to use it.
Every instruction website I've read all seem to be different.
I'm gonna have to find out, huh? lol
I've got Odin on my computer, and have the CWM 6 zipped file.
Will do some research.
Thanks

No problem.
A few tips with odin:
-If you have Kies installed, you don't need to install other drivers.
-The file you flash with Odin should have tar or tar.md5 extension
-you have to activate USB debugging from developer options.
-boot your phone into download mode
-run Odin as administrator
-connect your phone. you should see the text Added in Odin. If don't see it, you need drivers.
-you should make sure only auto reboot and f. Reset time are checked
-you should put the file in Pda or Ap(if using latest version)
Click start and wait until it finishes. It will restart itself if you checked auto reboot.
That's about it. It's very safe and easy to use.
Watch some videos on YouTube. You will definitely find some.

Strange. You could try TWRP instead of CWM. I use TWRP and really like it:
Here is the download link for your device: http://www.techerrata.com/file/twrp2/hltetmo/openrecovery-twrp-2.7.2.0-hltetmo-4.4.img.tar
This is the Odin flashable recovery.
Here is TWRP page: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/
EDIT: One more thing. Are these the exact steps you are following when booting into recovery?
"To access recovery mode on your Note 3, turn off the device and press Volume Up+Home+Power buttons at the same time for about 4-6 seconds. When the screen lights up and you see the Samsung logo, release the Power button but keep Volume Up+Home keys pressed until you see the recovery menu screen"

Yes, if I use the buttons, the download mode comes up saying 'Boot failed'. That's holding the vol. button 'up'. If I hold vol. down, it loads download mode correctly.
If I try to enter recovery thru Rom Manager, Recovery tries to start and the boot loop starts. ??
I may try TWRP. I've heard a lot about it.
Thanks for the links.

stuck in loop, possibly a different kind of loop

I was trying to fix my girlfriends nexus 5 that was doing the restart loop after an update. Everything seemed to go fine. Unlocked the bootloader, etc. Flashed the newest rom (6.0.1 (MMB29S) ce1d670f61061c3902f3997510ea55d7 6bfcdfa4f4840898e5d76fa044f5e6a0f71343bf) and then something obviously went wrong (not quite sure, dont think i touched anything) and it's now stuck in a different kind of loop that only loops while it's plugged in. Ive uploaded a video to youtube, but since im a new user i cant actually link it properly yet. Hopefully this wont annoy any mods, I promise it's not spam. youtube . be / yNSoiTPnGZw
Is there any way to get it to stay on for more than a couple seconds to retry the flashing?
Any help is appreciated.

First i followed the guide here on xda to unlock the bootloader(guide-nexus-5-how-to-unlock-bootloader-t2507905), installed twrp, which went fine. Then i realized that i couldnt (or didnt realize how to via command line) to copy the stock rom and install it via twrp, so then i followed this guide here on xda (tutorial-how-to-flash-factory-image-t2513701) with the factory img (6.01 hammerhead), got to this point in the guide: ★After everything finished, select "Recovery" using the volume buttons. then it stalled out, turned off and now just cycles on and offf through the google logo with the lock picture or if i hold down the volume button it will go into the bootloader briefly then restart, rinse repeat.

Have u tried messing with the power button, there are a lot of issues on the nexus 5 with the power button causing loops, simply from getting stuck, try playing with the power button a little and see of that helps, it might just need to be replaced
Wait, did u flash the factory img with twrp, or did u flash it using fastboot?

in the end fastboot, since i coulndt see how i could copy the img over to install via twrp
im pretty sure the button is fine, since it was cycling from the ota update install, then was working fine unlocking the bootloader, but after the flash, it crapped the bed.
Different problem
I had a problem where the google logo keeps on booting up with a slight vibration. This started to happen when my was dropped.I initially thought that was a software issue and thought of installing new ROM's but eventually my device was not detected :crying:
So i took it to repair shop near my house and they said it would cost 2500
I did some google research and found the reason was due to the power button being stucked during the fall.I got that repaired and my device is good to go

ok, took it into a shop, got the power button fixed. It must have been on the way out because literally one minute it worked and the second it didnt. now i think ive got it narrowed down. it's saying it's unable to mount /persist. ive tried the various fixes:
e2fsck/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/persist
and
make_ext4fs/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/persist
but all i get is a not found error. not sure what to do from here on.
success!! i ended up stumbling on a bit how to restore the persist partition i didnt try. got a custom rom installs and everything works. thanks to everyone who tried to help!!
stuck in bootloop while flashing cataclysm rom
i tried to flash cataclysm rom in my n5..i unlock bootloader, flash custom recovery using TWRP and flash cataclysm rom following the instructions in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...s-5-how-to-unlock-bootloader-t2507905...after that it was stuck in bootloop...i tried to open recovery but it wont open anymore it will only go back to loop....how can open the recovery? is it safe to flash CWM recovery?..tnx in advance..
When it was stuck in the loop, I had to hold vol up and down with the power button (wait a few secs until it was completely off) then reboot holding down + power till it opened the bootloader. if that doesnt work, try reflashing the bootloader via fastboot. I only found out i couldnt mount the persist partition by looking at the terminal window in twrp after trying to install a rom which kept it in the boot loop. I then used the cmd: make_ext4fs /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/persist to rebuild it.

After flashing TWRP, use the volume and power button to select recovery. Once in TWRP, wipe cache, data, reboot.

Great to hear it. Congratulations:good:

Jelly by Unihertz - the smallest 4g Phone Ever

Is there a sub forum for the Jelly yet? Want to see the ROMs that come out.
YYeeeeeeaaah!! More software for this little miracle!!
My Jelly Pro was delivered today. Looking good so far - just getting to grips with it.
I'got my Jelly Pro today and need root. Any idea how to root my Jelly?
Custom roms for jelly ?
It's a cool little device, and Unihertz seems to be making things easy for the users. Hoping to get TWRP on mine at some point.
Jelly Pro Stock Boot, Stock Recovery & TWRP
I take ZERO credit for any of this. I just received my Jelly Pro and am reposting information I found useful to get TWRP & root. I take no responsibility if you bork your device.
Enable Developer Options (Settings,About phone, click Build number until you see 'You are now a developer')
Go back to Settings, scroll down to the bottom and you'll see a new ‘Developer Options’ entry right above ‘About phone’
Enable OEM unlocking
Enable USB debugging
I also disable animations, just a preference, but not necessary
Make sure your usb drivers and adb/fastboot is set up on your computer
From terminal:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot oem unlock
fastboot flash recovery twrp_jelly_pro.img
fastboot reboot
(hold volume-up and power to go into recovery)
****if something went wrong and you get a "command not found" message, click volume-up & power a few times to go into stock recovery, then do a factory reset and try again)
****when going into twrp, DO NOT allow modifications
In TWRP, go to ADB Sideload and swipe to start
From term: adb sideload supersu-XXX.zip
Back in TWRP, go ahead and reboot
should have TWRP recovery and root
hopefully we'll start seeing some ROM's for this little guy....

I successfully flashed twrp and supersu, but when I reboot, it just goes right back to twrp, and asks for a pattern to decrypt data... Not sure what I might have done wrong. I was able to reset things by flashing stock boot and recovery via fastboot. (as described at http://www.unihertz.com/bbs/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=67&extra=page=1&page=3).
I tried again (fastboot flash twrp, sideload supersu) and this time it worked! Just wanted to leave all this here in case anyone else runs into similar problems. Lovely having root again. Can't wait for Lineage to make its appearance!
I ran into the same issue. When phone was delivered, /data was already encrypted.....with what key I don't know.
User "vineethrp" helped me with a similar issue. He is the one that came up with the TWRP recovery and dumped the boot and recovery images. Here are the instructions on post 22:
http://www.unihertz.com/bbs/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=67&extra=page=1&page=2
The issue, he suspects, is dm-verity. DO NOT modify system when you boot into TWRP and click on "Keep Read Only". I was able to root and it is booting again.
can we use magisk su?
I was having trouble booting up to Android with TWRP installed, even with the directions in the original thread, so I reflashed stock boot/recovery and installed Magisk Manager. (I was going to use Magisk anyway.) I used it to patch the stock bootloader from the original thread, then flashed the patched bootloader. Magisk works fine now on my Jelly Pro with stock recovery.
If you use an SD card, Magisk and Xposed won’t work unless they are on internal storage.
Wow, I'm surprised root was gained by someone on this thing, but that is awesome! I reckon I'll haveta do it to mine too!
Reckon this thread will get it's own "Unihertz Jelly" section? Moderators?
Yeah, would be good to have a forum to go to...
Will have to root mine now too
Bad customer service!!!!
Placed order through Unihertz website on 9/26/17. I have not even received a confirmation email regarding the order. I even posted to their customer "service" forum hoping to get some reply. It has been three weeks! Now I find out Amazon is selling the JellyPhone with Prime, while the Unihertz site is listing "21 days to 30" days for shipment. As a company that is trying to break into the consumer market(rather than OEM) they should attempt to take better care of customers.

I've managed to install TWRP using that instructions. After that I installed SuperSU, then deinstalled SuperSU and installed Magisk. But one app didn't work well, so I decided to reinstall Magisk. And I've made one big mistake: haven't made backup, and got a softbrick. I've managed to unbrick it, but some things goes wrong.
So now I'm looking for stock firmware to flash. If someone can get TWRP backup of all folders except userdata and cache, please upload somewhere and post here the link.

I got along!
I entered into the stock recovery (long press on power button + volume up from power off state, and after the recovery loaded, simultaneously pressing on the 3 physical buttons and the "Home" soft button)
I chose wipe data, and then I chose booting to bootloader.
I re-flashed the TWRP recovery, entered it, and using ADB sideload to re-installed SuperSu, and I rebooted to System mode.
The system has been re-uploaded, and without encryption!
I think the problem was that I made a change to the NVRAM, and as soon as I re-flashed the stock boot and recovery, it checks the integrity of the partitions, and does not agree to boot if they are not original. As soon as I returned the SuperSu from the TWRP it canceled the test and allowed to boot as usual. Just a hypothesis, the main thing is that it works ...
I would watch the Unihertz forum they may post firmware there sometime.

So can you please backup system and vendor folders using TWRP and upload? I need them Did you do the backup?
Btw you don't need to "simultaneously pressing on the 3 physical buttons" it works with short press power button + volume up. Sometimes it works at first time, but usually you need to press them several times.
