Lowering screen resolution for non-rooted phones - X Style (Pure) General

Hey all.. Screen resolution can be lowered in non - rooted phones using adb shell. I have tested this but all the same I advise caution.
Step 1:
Open cmd and type the path of adb.
Step 2:
adb shell wm size 1080x1920
or
adb shell wm size 720x1280 (This works. But there is a very noticeable difference.)
Step 3:
adb shell wm density 420 (for 1080p)
or
adb shell wm density 320 (for 720p)
Step 4:
adb shell stop && start
That's all. U r done.. It's better to reboot the phone for the changes to take effect. Also u'll notice that the bootanimation is not configured for 720 or 1080p.. But u can't change that..
Roll Back to original settings:
adb shell wm size reset
adb shell wm density reset
adb shell stop && start
Reboot the phone..
Benchmarks:
Antutu 6.0.1
2160p: 52337
1080p: 56784
720p: 67877 (Very noticeable reduction in quality)
SOT: (With heavy usage)
2160p: 2 hr 57 min
1080p: 3 hr 40 min
720p: 4 hr 2 min
I derived this from shawn5162's method. Also if anyone tries this please post your SOT and Benchmarks as well..

Noob question, but I am relatively new to adb shell, but wanted to know if this would trip anything that would stop OTA updates?

It is not likely that this would stop OTA functions as our phone is still locked.

So far loving this. It looks like active display isnt really compatible. But there are a ton of 3rd party apps out there that simulate active notifications so I think we are good.

This is pretty cool, I haven't been using it long but so far so good. I was a little freaked out before reboot when all my icons were huge, but all was fixed after reboot. I noticed little or no difference so far with my usage, as far as quality/resolution. It all seems a little snappier too. Thanks big time to the OP.

This is excellent, you can change DPI on the fly and see how it reflects on the screen, with the app drawer open it's easy to see.
X-Com is not sluggish anymore at 1600x900.

I'm also going to add my thanks. This works great. Just the active display is a bit off center but everything else is fine.
Sent from my XT1575 using XDA-Developers mobile app

I did find one app so far that doesn't scale to the DPI, swiftkey. It is apparently a known problem that it only scales to default DPI. This means you only see 4 keys or so and they look huge. It can be fixed with an adjustment to the build prop, but then you have ton root and it defeats the purpose. This may be a deal breaker for me I will have to see.

Does this harm the functionality of Android Pay?

I didn't try Android pay while I had the resolution at 1080 but I went back and forth testing a few things and my Android pay still work.

720p looked so awful, lol! I might just stick with 1080p

anybody usind 1080p?has a gain in SOT?

When I used 1080p I took a reading at 50 percent battery and was at 2hrs20mins SOT and that was with heavy usage. Not sure if SOT is linear but if it is that translates to 4 hrs 40 mins which is much more then I had before. I had to revert to 4K because I couldn't live without SwiftKey and it doesn't scale to anything but stock DPI.

swiftkey doesn't work with reduced resolution?

Nope. It only scales to your stock resolution. If you are rooted you can change that in your build prop, but I didn't want to root this phone yet. Most other keyboards I tried worked with the new DPI, but I have to have my SwiftKey. I have years of custom dictionary in that program and I am just so used it I had a hard time using anything else.

Does Moto Display not work at all at 1080p or is it just off? Can someone take a picture of what it looks like?

Buddy all video recording apps require neon Instructions which unfortunately, are not present in our processor thus we cannot record screen videos on our cell. It's not even present In tegra 3 devices such as HTC one x.... All tegra device are without neon instructions.

As you know it, it takes 2 sec to captured a snapshot & after that takes more 1 or 2 sec to come back normal. So, I think not possible.but if devs can then OK.:fingers-crossed:

Its not possible buddy. For a video to be appear like a video, the image capturing shud be atleast 46 frames per second. Only then u can feel it as a flowing video. Anything lesser than that will be a jerky one or like a slideshow. So Just imagine, that in a second, mobile shud capture 46 frames or 46 screenshots. Thats practically impossible. Even now, for taking a screenshot, we need to press the powerkey+menu key for atleast 2 sec to get the screenshot. Thats processing speed of configuration. Even if the screenshot feature feature is handled internally within the code, its not possible to make the device to take in that fps. It needs additional hardware suppor for making it working. i.e., NEON

Just reg the fps part.
If i can remember properly i think the minimun fps is 24 frames per second. That is sufficient to fool our eyes that the running pictures are actually video.

Also like using hdmi cable the cell can be used as a video output and input for hd tv.
So can't the same out put be used internally through code as an input for video camera?

Few points from Wikipedia as well:
The human eye and its brain interface, the human visual system, can process 10 to 12 separate images per second, perceiving them individually. The visual cortex holds onto one image for about one-fifteenth of a second, so if another image is received during that period an illusion of continuity is created, allowing a sequence of still images to give the impression of motion. Early silent films had a frame rate from 14 to 24 FPS which was enough for the sense of motion, but it was perceived as jerky motion. By using projectors with dual- and triple-blade shutters the rate was multiplied two or three times as seen by the audience. Thomas Edison said that 46 frames per second was the minimum: "anything less will strain the eye."
There are three main frame rate standards in the TV and movie-making business: 24p, 25p, and 30p. However, there are many variations on these as well as newer emerging standards.
24p is a progressive format and is now widely adopted by those planning on transferring a video signal to film. Film and video makers use 24p even if their productions are not going to be transferred to film, simply because of the on-screen "look" of the (low) frame rate which matches native film. When transferred to NTSC television, the rate is effectively slowed to 23.976 FPS (24×1000÷1001 to be exact), and when transferred to PAL or SECAM it is sped up to 25 FPS. 35 mm movie cameras use a standard exposure rate of 24 FPS, though many cameras offer rates of 23.976 FPS for NTSC television and 25 FPS for PAL/SECAM. The 24 FPS rate became the de facto standard for sound motion pictures in the mid-1920s. Practically all hand-drawn animation is designed to be played at 24 FPS. Actually hand-drawing 24 unique frames per second ("1's") is costly. Even big budget films usually hand-draw animation shooting on "2's" (one hand-drawn frame is shown twice, so only 12 unique frames per second) and a lot of animation is drawn on "4's" (one hand-drawn frame is shown four times, so only six unique frames per second).
25p is a progressive format and runs 25 progressive frames per second. This frame rate derives from the PAL television standard of 50i (or 50 interlaced fields per second). Film and Television companies use this rate in 50 Hz regions for direct compatibility with television field and frame rates. Conversion for 60 Hz countries is enabled by slowing down the media to 24p then converted to 60 Hz systems using pulldown. While 25p captures half the temporal resolution or motion that normal 50i PAL registers, it yields a higher vertical spatial resolution per frame. Like 24p, 25p is often used to achieve "cine"-look, albeit with virtually the same motion artifacts. It is also better suited to progressive-scan output (e.g., on LCD displays, computer monitors and projectors) because the interlacing is absent.
30p is a progressive format and produces video at 30 frames per second. Progressive (noninterlaced) scanning mimics a film camera's frame-by-frame image capture. The effects of inter-frame judder are less noticeable than 24p yet retains a cinematic-like appearance. Shooting video in 30p mode gives no interlace artifacts but can introduce judder on image movement and on some camera pans. The widescreen film process Todd-AO used this frame rate in 1954–1956.
48p is a progressive format and is currently being trialed in the film industry. At twice the traditional rate of 24p, this frame rate attempts to reduce motion blur and flicker found in films. Director James Cameron stated his intention to film the two sequels to his film Avatar at a higher frame rate than 24 frames per second, in order to add a heightened sense of reality. The first film to be filmed at 48 FPS was The Hobbit, a decision made by its director Peter Jackson.[8] At a preview screening at CinemaCon, the audience's reaction was mixed after being shown some of the film's footage at 48p, with some arguing that the feel of the footage was too lifelike (thus breaking the suspension of disbelief).
Thanks for the wiki info Vikesh. I actually used a app called Lapse It. Even a Pro version is available. With this app, u can create a video by capturing pics and altering the fps and many more. I got to know abt this app when i was using my Wave 2 in Bada platform. The same app is in android too. You can learn a lot about fps and image to video conversion and some time lapse effects with it.
Thanks for reminding me about this wiki. I had actually gone thru the complete wiki long back when me and a frnd had an argument about the real "movie feel" that was missing on a high end led tv playing a blu-ray because it was running on a vey high fps.
Even this snip from wiki says that. Shooting with 48 fps has just atarted and that too not welcomed much by movie viewers. And we can see that all movies that we see now are in 24 fps only. The mild imperfections are what that gives the movie feel and absolutely enough to give a smooth video as we know it.
All im saying is when it comes to minimum fps, 24 is all we need.

Wallpaper Image Quality

I recently noticed that seemingly all of the images I apply as a wallpaper degrade in quality once they are applied. What I mean by this is the original image remains HD but the actual wallpaper degrades in quality. Does anyone else have this problem? I have tried some wallpaper apps, wallpaper wizardrii being one of them but they don't seem to have any effect on the quality. Any help is appreciated.

I would recommend using a very high resolution wallpaper and cropping it a little to make the dimensions 1 x 1.5 and then use the app called image2wall
I found this very useful to get good quality image.

higher gamin performance and full graphics nova 3

Hi Here i show the easy way to enable nova 3 full effects without using the navbar in the Galaxy s4
You need rooted device,
Resolution changer from playstore
Set screen resolution to 540x960 and dpi to 220 apply and enjoy
You will notice that the screen ist AS sharp AS before.
Now you will notice that games run smoother
Why is the grafics sharper at lower resolution?
It cant be sharper then fullhd or?

Project Super Camera on Steriods -Note 5 Mod - Tmobile

Now the time has come after 3 years of fighting with the camera on the note 2, note 3 and note 4 trying to make it have unlimited recording limits (until space is full) is now POSSIBLE!
I have spent the last couple hours digging through and pinpointing the 1 thing that cuts off the 4k recording at 5 minutes and you are now able to record up to 1 hour in 4K. I may try to push it more later but this is a good start.
Instructions:
THIS IS NOT A FLASHABLE ZIP SO DO NOT FLASH THRU RECOVERY
1. Download the zip and extract the apk SamsungCamera4.apk
2. Download es file explorer and browse to system/apps/SamsungCamera4/
3. Make a backup of everything in that folder then delete everything in the folder
4. Copy over the SamsungCamera4.apk that you downloaded to system/apps/SamsungCamera4/
4a. (In V2) copy the media_profiles.xml to /system/etc and overwrite
5. set permissions to rw-r-r on the file
6. Reboot your phone
7. Once rebooted check to see if your camera works, once up look for KRM in the Camera icon to the top of the record button
8. If you see KRM then you have installed the mod successfully
If you have any questions please ask. I have recorded up to 35 minutes so far but ran out of space so please let me know if you can fully record to 1 hour. While this mod does unlock the full recording limits of 4k samsung has generously unlocked it already for 1920x1080 and below. That being said please do not use this mod for any illegal activity,
Also it will split each 4GB file into separate pieces- usually around 8 minutes-9 minutes
DOWNLOADS:
V4T(Tmobile)
CHANGELOGS:
V4
Added ability to use flashlight under 15% battery thanks to @dr.ketan
Made a version for Tmobile due to update that caused FC
Removed media_profiles.xml for now to tweak, gets rid of bitrate improvements (return to stock media_profile recommended for now)
removed button to take snapshots during 4k recording.. caused crashes
V3.2
Fixed recording while in call
Modified timers for recording so they are more accurate
Added snapshot button in UHD, Smooth motion and WHD (BUT DO NOT USE THE BUTTON IN THOSE YET)
V3.1
Fixed 4k unlimited, broke in V3. Fixed in V3.1
V3
(Thanks to @dwitherell back on the note 4 for telling me about how to do these)
Prevent audio from stopping/pausing when taking a pic or shooting video
Allow for taking video while in call
Broke 4k recording...
V2
4K bitrate turned up to 68Mbps from 48Mbps
Picture quality turned up to 100% from 96%
V1
4K can record up to a full hour
Modified recording icon
Some interesting information... the note 5 has a 20MP camera apparently because when u take snapshots it is around 5310x4000. Also when trying to change the resolution of slo mo to anything over 1280x720 I got garbled video so thats a lost cause.
