Notification shade works while screen locked - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion

Others may know this, but it was a surprise to me.
With the screen locked, you can still swipe down on notification bar and access the quick settings tiles and the screen brightness slider. Some of the tiles are locked out, but you can switch between sound, vibration or muted, and turn on or off the following WiFi calling, Do not disturb, flashlight, Always on display, Airplane mode, Power saving (but not Ultra), and Auto rotate.
Tapping on any of the other tiles will bring up the pin/password entry screen. Tapping the settings icon or Quick connect also brings up the pin/password keypad.
The fact that you can toggle airplane mode on is troubling. That means someone who finds your phone, and knows, can prevent you from locating / wiping the phone with Android device manager.

Correct, that's a HUGE security issue. Removed airplane mode from my choices.

But im sure you can still get into it by clicking the edit button. To remedy this i use screen lock protector from the play store also cerberus has option to lock power off and notification drop down.

Edit mode doesn't seem to work with the screen locked, fortunately.

Unfortunately, though, I discovered you can tap the down arrow to open the full quick settings panel, and use airplane mode from there. No way to prevent it at the moment.

Or they can just turn it off?

Yep. That's crazy they would allow that. Someone needs to bring it to Samsung's attention!

First world problem: Keep the screen from turning off?

I have a first world problem: When I'm on a call and want to access the notification bar, my screen turns off--I think because the light sensor is effected by my hand.
Use case: I'm on a call, realize I want to switch to Bluetooth, and want to go to the notification bar to access settings or click on the bluetooth tile, but the screen goes dark. So, I have to put the phone down, and carefully access the bar making sure my hand doesn't get in the way. Is there a way to get around this?
UPDATE: I just got an answer from someone else off this board: While on a call, press the "home" button/icon that takes you to your launcher and then access the Notification bar--the screen will then stay on without a problem.

I just posted a fix to my original post, above.
Alternately... You could install a launcher with gesture setting as to double tap in the home screen to toggle/expand notification bar.. So you don't have to get your fingers near the top at all... Cheers

Swipe up from homebutton to search

One of my favourite Android functions is the quick swipe up from the home button to access google now/search.
It doesn't seem to work on the Mediapad x2. But as this phone has so many semi-hidden functions (home/back/... order; DPI settings; ....), I was wondering if I missed a setting somewhere to turn this on?
(and an other minor gripe, accessibility -> Services: Whatever you turn on, doesn't stay on. It gets turned off after x amount of time. Is there a way to keep them turned on?)
Cheers,

accessibility is turned off when the relevant app is closed. If you set app background protected, it will nto go off. But yes on boot you have to re-enable accessibility unless you use tasker or automate.
I have another stupid issue with Emui3.1
When I tap on a notification in the notification center, most apps don't open. The notification bar goes away and I stay on my homescreen. e.g. with Google Photos, Facebook, ...
Is that also a switch somewhere I have to turn off?
(Damn, I hate that phone manager)

What are the hidden functions for Home/Back..?
Not really a hidden function, but you can change their order.
Pinch the home screen inward to access hidden apps. Or you can make that your app drawer.

Feature Requests

Hopefully Essential takes some user feedback as far as features we would like to see going forward. If you post please try to keep it to reasonable features that mostly stock devices have or non os software tweaks.
The two big ones for me are
1. Night mode
2. Fingerprint shortcuts, primarily for notifications

+1
Damn just checked and realized no night mode since got the phone just today.
+1 on night mode, that thing is must have at system level. Don't want to go back to using apps like twilight etc
My needs are simple. Would like the option to rearrange navigation buttons, battery percentage, and finger print gestures.

Has anyone tried enabling night mode by enabling the UI tuner?. night mode is built into nougat but on some phones still has to be turned on. I don't have the phone yet to do it. Pull down the notification shade twice and then long press the settings cog icon. A wrench will show up next to the icon indicating that UI tuner has been enabled. Next install "night mode enabler" from the play store.
Unlocked bootloader, TWRP and root. Hopefully. ? - Not sure any devs are on board with this device.
I haven't received the phone yet, but does it support gestures while the screen is off? Such as double tap to wake, swipe up to unlock, etc.
Night mode is nice. I also like to separate ring volume from notification volume. I know that's not native to Android, but a simple mod makes all the difference for me.

Night mode for sure. Second would be system level to force apps to use the full screen, like what Samsung has for the s8+

Yep.
I'm waiting for TWRP.
For root, I plan to use Magisk to root and hide BL status. Since it's mostly ASOP, it should work like the Nexus 6P I have.
First off +1 to both, I really don't want to use the app that allows finger gestures, was a little sad to see it not available in stock Android since I got used to using it on the Pixel XL.

Just tried it and it isn't there sadly. Just like the fingerprint gestures I don't want to have to add it through an app.
On the flip side I got exactly what I deserved/wanted. Nothing but pure Android (minus the Essential Cam app and the Essential option in the settings) so that was good but in a way I want to kick myself because I forgot that these two features were add ons to the skin for the Pixel devices. Whatever the case maybe, I'll get over it lol.
ability to change navigation buttons

Hopefully those features, switching navigation buttons and more will come to the table once we get the bootloader unlocked and the possibility of custom ROM's/mods. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Use this to change nav bar.
For battery percentage just enable the UI tuner
1. Changing audio track with volume buttons when screen is off.
2. Resizing nav bar height
3. Double tap to wake
I second the fingerprint gestures and double tap to wake wholeheartedly.
Would also love to see these:
1. Ability to use Light Flow or another LED manager to customize notification LEDs. This is my favorite thing about Android phones and Essential's stock LED patterns aren't cutting it for me. Somehow they managed to make it impossible for the LED to flash more than once every 5 seconds.
2. Ability to use 360 camera attachment as a fisheye lens. Currently the camera stitches two 210 images together to form a 360 photo. I want to be able to choose just one lens to capture an image.

The battery percentage option is in the system ui tuner I believe. Pull down the notification shade and long press on the settings icon then go into settings and look for it.
ability to change navbar height. it's too big uses unnecessary screen estate
There are several Improvements I would like to see in the phones software. More so just general optimization. However I think that most of these answers of what features are coming will be answered in Thursday's Q&A session with Andy Rubin on Reddit. So I guess we should wait until then to see where Essential and the ph1 is headed.

Customize Notifications?

Hey all,
I'm so used to all the features of Light Flow that I didn't realize how much I depended on it. Since the 3 does not have an LED, I'm looking for an alternative app to manage my notifications. I want to be able to choose the notification sound and the vibration pattern per app.
Light Flow does this but not without requiring a persistent notification. Normally you'd be able to avoid this by installing Light Flow Legacy, but it does not show up in the app store on the Pixel 3.
Does anybody have any recommendations?
Thanks
Go to apk mirror and download light flow legacy that way. Let us know how it goes. I really hate the lack of notification LED, but I'm not willing to go as far as you to customize the vibrations etc.

Already tried this. It doesn't seem be on there.
I've been using Light Manager. It displays customized colored icons on the screen in place of the LED, with AOD turned off. I'm enjoying it more than I thought I would.

Since there is no LED, we have no way of knowing if my phone is charging when plugged in without turning on the screen. Does light manager have a solution for this too?
Yes, it shows a charging icon and the %

I tried it and it looks like the default lock screen prevents the icons from displaying. Do you have your screen set to stay off when new notifications come in or is there something else you changed in either the app or system settings? Sorry for hijacking the thread with all the questions, but this lack of LED makes my phone useless while the screen is off.
Yes I have always on display off, and new notifications off. Double tap and lift for notifications I still have on though.

What other settings do you have? My phone isn't waking up with Light Manager with AOD/new notifications off and double tap/lift for notifications on. I do not have a lock screen enabled nor does it work with lock screen (swipe) enabled.
The "tests" aren't working either.

Does this require you to double-unlock to get to your phone, or is there someway around that?

That got it working. I have to tap the screen once, home/back button then shows, then double tap to get to the home screen.
Yeah I use fingerprint unlock and realize it requires it being done twice. We need a cleaner solution.

A cleaner solution was the $0.03 LED that Google removed from the phone! It shouldn't be this hard to tell if my phone is charging.
If I wanted a useless notification system, I would've purchased an iPhone!

Question Persistent Wi-Fi Call notification

Hello,
I have noticed that the Wi-Fi Calling notification does not go away even if I turn Wi-Fi Calling off. I have already put the notification to silent and reduced but it constantly sits there and annoys me. Does anyone know a trick how to get rid of it completely? The options for disabling it are greyed out and cannot be turned off. My S21 Ultra which had the same e-SIM, came from the same region, did not have that issue although the function was turned on 24/7.
The package which causes those notifications is com.sec.unifiedwfc.
EDIT: At the moment I have blocked the notifications using AutoNotification app from the store.

I did check it but could not find anything useful. The one thing that could have helped, notification snooze time change, has failed to apply even though I granted all permissions via ADB. The app suggested to use OneUI Tuner but it is not available on xda labs when I open the official link.
Sorry, I thought you were talking about the notification on the status bar

It is just the carrier pushing for Wifi call. Tmobile does that.
What I do? I turn of wifi right when a call comes. The HD+ is much better without wifi.

If you put it to silent it will look as in the screenshot. Turning off is greyed out.
