Tolino Tab 8 Screen Dimming Problem (Intel DPST, CABC?) - Android General

Hi,
I recently bought a Tolino Tab 8 with a Intel Atom Z3735 processor, running on KitKat 4.4.4. Everthing works fine but every time i switch between apps the screen brightness changes depending on the background of the app e.g. when i open twitter (mostly white background) the screen brightness goes up and when i go back to the home screen (black background) the brightness goes down. No matter if i enabled auto dimming in the settings or not. I've read that has something to do with Intels Display Power Saving Technology which is used to extend the battery life of the tab. I tried to edit the build.prop (mentioned here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=65422943&postcount=1786 ) to turn it off but nothing worked so far. I also tried to find the driver settings itself ( mentioned here https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo...Tab-S8-50-Screen-Dimming-Problem/td-p/1873040 ) but could'nt find the right settings.
The Tablet was manufactured by Trekstor if this matters somehow.
Hope you guys can help me to solve it.
I also have a minor bug where i can't change video resolution in the youtube app above 720p even the Display has the resolution of 1920x1200 which i think has something to do with 4.4.4.

Focus/Omnia 7 auto dimming

is there any way at all to disable the screen from dimming on backgrounds with too much white? i think its ridiculous that they built this functionality into the phone without an option to turn it off, is there anyway to tweak the registry? i got the phone because of the screen but if i cant enjoy bright backgrounds n what not theres not much point
There is a option for that. "Screen brightness", switch from Auto to Low/Med/High
no thats not the issue, i have it on high with auto off, yet it still dims when theres too many white pixels on the screen, apparently its built into the samsung driver for the screen, really considering returning it due to this

I immediately noticed this effect when testing an Omnia 7 in a mobile phone shop here in Switzerland and I found that quite annoying.
Try moving from page to page in the Office app. You'll notice a decrease in screen brightness when more white pixels are shown. At least that seems to be how the built-in algorithm works.
I prefer the 4.3" screen of the HTC HD7.

[Q] Remove screen dim just before timeout/lock? (voodoo colour issue)

I've looked at past threads, but found no resolution to this.
I'm running voodoo colour with deep black settings and everything looks great, except right before the screen times out it will dim to its lowest setting and force the amoled panel to turn a sickly yellow/green hue.
I would like to disable the dim aspect and just let the screen time out by shutting off completely. Is there anyway to do this? I'm running the latest version of Pixel Rom with Air Kernel 4.2. I don't have auto-brightness enabled.
i am having the same issu i dont have to yellow tint in low light
but still i whould like to disable the dim it is disturbing my daily use of the device
i too dont see any point for this time out before the screen turns of
and i cant understand why when plying a game i need to touch the screen every 25 sec to get rid of the dim
thanks
I remember seeing something about auto-brightness light sensor tweaking back when I was using NV rom last year but I don't know if that would apply or not.
Does anyone know if the custom apps on the market avoid this?
edit: Tried Tasker for a full screen-off solution, and a bunch of other apps. Wasn't able to get the results I wanted :I
I have a Samsung Captivate and I am running a kernel with voodoo color support with this same issue.
The first post of this thread shows a possible solution - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1002090
I flashed the pixel os android 10 in my redmi note 7 and now i am facing screen lock issue my phone does not accept any screen lock that i am trying to apply on it plzz help me

Screen goes totally black when using lux auto brightness

The current rom im running that has the problem is cleanrom ultralight, I have had it before on cleanrom and i think some builds of stock roms, dont think CM10 ever gave me this problem.
When I run lux auto brightness and set the slider to a subzero setting, when I run most apps (but not all) the screen goes totally black. One example is setcpu, and it also happens when I launch lux settings. One example where it works fine is nova launcher. If I press the screen on top where the status bar is, and "grab" the status bar, screen reappears until I let status bar go, where screen goes black again.
Basically on most apps using lux in subzero setting causes screen to be totally black but still clickable. Any ideas?
Screen filter app doesnt cause this problem, but lux serves my needs better.

Hey sfetaz,
This is the first I've heard of this issue. It sounds like transparency is being lost somehow. I'd take this issue up with the Cleanrom devs, chances are they changed something they shouldn't have.
Hi,
I have the same issue as described by sfetaz. If I set the brightness to sub-zero (-1 is sufficent), the screen goes to minimum sub-zero brightness (-90) after a few moments in most apps. Sometimes it looks like this happens only if screen content doesn't change for a while. This does not happen if brightness is set to 1 or higher.
I use Lux Lite on a Motorola RAZR HD (XT925) running CyanogenMod 10.2. The issue exists since CyanogenMod 10.2 nightly build 2013-10-19. On 2013-10-18 everything is OK for me.
BBQLog (changelog.bbqdroid.org) shows some display related changes in CyanogenMod on 2013-10-18 and 2013-10-19.
I know 10/20 there was an update for the display. I ran it on PACman with no issues, and I am now on the 10/25 Vanir. No issues with either. I did notice this morning that when I load the default values, that I only load the 2 setting gs I have set, 0 and 2000 or 20000 can't remember off hand. I have my 0 set for -40 and it dims the screen correctly.
This post was made by Vanlandi.
On my RAZR HD (XT925), the problem persisted upto CM-10.2 Snapshot-M1 (2013-11-02).
After flashing CM-10.2 Nightly 2013-11-06, overlays (sub-zero, night/astronomer) mode are functional again.
It had something to do with the overlay. Normal brightness adjustments (>=1) worked as expected. Going to sub-zero or enabling Night/Astronomer Mode, screen content got barely visible after some seconds. When I enabled alternative overlay, the screen went totaly black (sub-zero) or red (night mode). (havn't tried astronomer mode with alternative overlay)
For me, this issue is resolved on the current CM Nightlys for XT925.

[Q] Android TV Box CS918, T-R42 display is way too dark

Running on official 4.4.2 firmware.
I found that the screen display is way too dark, very unacceptable. This is very obvious for video playback from every software, e.g. youtube, mxplayer, xbmc, etc.
As I share same hdmi port on my tv with other 5 devices, it is not convenient to adjust tv display back and forth between other 5 devices and this dark-display tv box.
My box is rooted. Is there any way to adjust its gamma, black level, etc. Tried several brightness adjustment apps from store and did not help.
MiniX Forums had a thread covering this, without much of a complete solution. Since they changed their domain to minixforum, the thread either has a different URL or is lost, but google cache exists of the original - http://webcache.googleusercontent.c...reen-too-dark.3631/+&cd=2&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=uk
Short version is try changing HDMI range on your TV from limited to full. It may help other people to reply if you mention which Android apps you've tried to use (which presumably were adjusting backlight levels on a phone/tablet, rather than the video signal data being sent by your box. As an example, although advertised as only compatible for a couple of Nexus devices, have you tried https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teamkang.fauxdisplay&hl=en ? How about https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.netmanslab.sa&hl=en ?
Thanks a lot for your comprehensive reply.
My LG TV don't have an option for Full-range RGB; however, it has several Picture modes for me to choose. I usually use one of the Picture mode (say, Standard Picture mode) which I already tweaked/calibrated for best display quality.
Some other picture mode on my TV allows me to choose Gamma (high, medium, low), brightness adjustment, and Dark Level (high, low). I tried adjusting those options in combination under another Picture mode and, though not perfect, it gave me a better result.
So when I view other sources (Dune, Appletv, digital tv, satellite tv), I choose the Standard Picture mode; when switching my hdmi selector to this Android box, I have to choose the other Picture mode on my TV. This is good enough for now.
The Screen Adjuster app won't help. I've not tried The Advanced Color&Gamma Control paid app.
Anyway, Android tV box should have gamma/brightness/contrast/sharpness control under its Setting.
Update: tried Advanced Color&Gamma Control app, it allows me to adjust rgb only, no gamma adjustment.

Touch lag issue when using Adaptive smooothness

I got my Note 20 Ultra back on November and encountered an annoying issue when Adaptive refresh rate is turned on and watching YouTube videos. When YouTube first starts the display will run at 120hz, but after a few seconds it will drop to 60hz. When the refresh rate drops, the first touch of the screen is interpreted as a touch and hold instead of a single press. The display will then jump back to 120hz, but the display still thinks I'm pressing and holding the screen when I've already let go. If I then touch the screen again while in 120hz the phone thinks I've done a double tap (presumable completing the first tap and then immediately registering the second tap), which causes the video to seek forward or backward, depending on where I pressed on the screen the second time. If I tap the screen the one time but allow the screen to drop back to 60hz after it jumps to 120hz from the first tap, then the first tap seems to be ignored as my second tap acts like a tap and hold again.
What's interesting is that as long as the display stays at 120hz, all taps after the scenario above work fine. A single tap will open the playback overlay (pause/play button, seek arrows, etc) like it's supposed to, but once I leave the display alone and it drops to 60hz this whole problem starts all over again. Since adaptive refresh is tied to the brightness sensor, this problem does not present itself in a dark room since the display stays at 120hz in a dark room. Also, if I turn off adaptive refresh rate and have the display stay at 60hz all the time then the problem is not present either. I also will occasionally get non responsiveness on Brave Browser but I can't say for sure if they are related.
This has frustrated me so much I did a factory reset and interestingly the issue did not re-appear at first with a fully updated YouTube. Once I updated/installed other apps (including Galaxy store apps) the problem returned. I don't have display overlay apps installed, so I suspect it's a Galaxy store app but I can't pinpoint which one. I don't believe this is a hardware issue, so I'm curious if anyone on the thread has had a similar issue. I'd like to report this to Samsung but I have no idea where to even report this.
Sounds like you've figured it's a software program. You should update one at a time and see if you can pinpoint the issue. Try to not to install 3rd party software until all you need to update gets updated and phone is working fine.
Or
I would say try using a package disabler and try disabling the apps you suspect to see if any improvements. It might not be a Samsung app as others would be facing the same issue you're having.
As always don't restore settings/app data from backup etc other than media, messages, logs.
I'm using adaptive and everything is working fine on my end. Snapdragon variant here. Albeit I keep a number of Samsung apps disabled as i don't use or need them running in background for no reason.

I use package disabler pro bought from their website. It gives me a great on demand enable/disable option.
My use case might be a bit different from yours as I have about 160 packages disabled at a given time. I guess I can provide a list and you chose what you want from it.
I'll try uninstalling apps again to see if the problem can be resolved that way. On the latest version of Youtube it worked fine before I started installing more apps. I kind of don't want to do a full factory reset but if I have to so I can narrow that my be my only option. I'm wondering if there is another software I can run on my phone to see if any apps are interfering with the display or adaptive refresh rate?
I ended up doing a factory reset on my phone. The issue went away for the most of the day but returned again by night time. Same issue - when at 120hz and drops to 60hz the issue is present. It's not just Youtube, it's on any app, including the home screen. The first tap is always interpreted as a tap and hold, so single tapping an app icon brings up the tap and hold menu, and single tapping on the home screen brings up the home screen customization screen. Another test I did was turn off auto brightness, then turn my brightness down to the lowest setting. After that the display stayed at 120hz and the issue did not return until I either set the brightness up manually or turn auto brightness back on. I also tried in safe mode, and the issue was not present there either, but I can't tell if the device every went into 120hz or not since all 3rd party apps are disabled. At this point I have no idea what it is. The app setup was fine during the day, no new apps were installed, but the issue returned. Seems like I have no choice to but turn adaptive smoothness off and leave it at 60hz.
Just to add a little more interesting information here. I had someone else use the refresh rate monitor app on their Note 20 ultra (Tmobile variant), and their display operates differently than my Verizon variant. On the Tmo variant, when the screen drops to 60hz and the screen is tapped, the refresh rate drops to below 60 (12, 34, 48, etc) but then goes back up to 120hz after the app opens. Mine just goes immediately to 120hz and then gets that tap-and-hold behavior. So clearly the screens software or firmware is behaving differently here. I'm wondering if we have any other Verizon variant Note 20 Ultra users on this forum that could also test?
