Choose Contacts Account VCF save - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

It looks like Samsung, in addition to taking away our option to choose "just once" when opening files, phone number and email links so we can avoid setting a default, the contacts app no longer asks you which account you want to save a contact to (i.e. which gmail account, exchange account, or other cloud contact management). While you can select an account when you first create a new contact, you can't select a destination account when importing or saving VCF files. The older versions of Samsung software on my GS5 allowed me to select a destination account every time.
Does anyone know of a workaround? How does the phone decide which account is the "default" save to account - I got lucky and its saving to the right one, but how do I redirect it if it was saving to the wrong account?
PS: I know about the "clear defaults" function in the application settings. I already cleared defaults for my contacts app, it doesn't impact this issue - it will allow me to select a different app to use to open the VCF file, but not a destination account for the imported contact.

6 identical numbers per contact - how can i get rid of them?

after flashing bunches of times, and for some stupid reason importing contacts from the sim each time and then having it sync with google, i have 6 or 7 identical numbers under each contact.
any ideas of how i can pare 'em down to just the one?
thanks!
Go to your gmail which is here http://gmail.com.
Login and then select contacts on the left side and edit away.
ps: maybe not a good idea to import sim all the time...the first time should be enough because it with auto sync to your gmail account.
that's kinda what i've resigned myself to. i guess i was just hoping that some dev had had a similar prob and had written a quick app...
oh well...
Im not sure if anyone would spend time writing an app that does that because not many people have that problem.
I guess you could use Outlook to import the contacts and see if it detectes the duplication. Or if you do some analysis on Gmail's export format, I suppose you could use regular expression to do the job as well. As zeezee said, it probably doesn't worth it to develop an app for this.
Had the same problem a while back, easiest way i found was to login to your gmail account, export all contacts as a .csv file. Open it in excel or any spreadsheet program and delete the numbers out of all but one column for each contact. After that save the file (might want to keep a copy of the original just in case), delete all your contacts from gmail, then import your edited .csv file. Let me know if you have any questions.
If you login into gmail, amd export you contacts as a cvs, then clear all you contacts and re import the csv, google will detect the dupes, and fix it for you
For best results log into Gmail and select contacts.
Check each one of the dupes and select merge contacts.
This way you won't lose any detail in case contact 1 has the email
and contact 3 has phone number and home address.
I have to do this after a day of flashing because my MyFaves numbers
always get added back into Contacts.

[Q] Contacts. WTF?

Okay. I finally deleted all the people I don't talk to anymore from my contacts and SIM, and cleaned up by putting e-mail addresses in the contact info etc, and now want to sync that with my Gmail. Why doesn't these changes reflect on my Gmail account? I still have no contacts according to gmail, it just has an area that it has every e-mail address I have had an e-mail from or too.
The part that's frustrating is on my phone, when I go to compose a new text msg, and click contacts, I have to go through hundreds of useless e-mail addresses etc, still have 5 different names for some people that use multiple e-mail address and numbers, and a ton of "unknown" entries. I can't find a way to delete all of this other crap.
Has anybody successfully and cleanly synced all of their contacts?
Or is there a way to make it so when I hit the "contacts" button while composing a text msg, it only shows the phone numbers I have saved to the phone under contacts?
Theres too many areas called "contacts" that are completely unrelated to eachother. I wish google would wise up.
Thanks for any help!
When you make a new contact you get options to save to your phone, Google account, or sim card. You have to have them saved to Google or else they won't sync. I'd suggest opening Gmail on a computer and inputting them there.
So ALL of the work I did on the was a complete waste of time, and I have to go and indivudually put each and every name/number/email address into my Gmail contacts? Okay thats just retarded.
Next question, how do I get all of those "contacts" deleted from my phone. I really dont want to look at 500+ email address of companies/spam/notifications when I just want to look through my contacts to add to a text message.

In contacts, go into display options and check the box that says only contacts with phone numbers
Yea that helps when I go into contacts. My problem is that when you go into compose new text msg, then want to add a list of people and you click contacts, it lists the 500+ e-mail address I may have emailed out before, as well as up to 5 seperate entries for people with the same name, and doesn't show if it is for one of their e-mail addresses or one of their phone numbers.
This contacts sync thing is just outright stupid.
Solution I found for this do a factory wipe. Then when phone reboots add an exchange account. Use your google login info. Choose manual setup. Under server put m.google.com tell it to sync contacts. You must first make sure to configure google contacts to only sync groups you want. Do this within gmail on your computer. When you then add your google account uncheck sync contacts.

You don't have to delete anything! You can export your contacts on your phone to a vcf file.
contacts > import/export > export to sd card
Once you have the vcf file, you can e-mail it to your gmail account, then download the file to your pc. Next, import it to your gmail account. Let me know if that works.

go into your gmail contacts on a computer...create a new group called "My Contacts". copy all of the contacts to there that you actually want to see. within your phone contacts setting, set it to only sync that contacts group from gmail.

on eclair, yes... on froyo, no.
the workaround in eclair is to set up a second gmail account, then use a service like soocial.com. in your real gmail account, set up the my contacts list. set up soocial to sync the "my contacts" list with the entire list on the 2nd account. then, on your android phone, don't sync contacts from the primary gmail.. only sync contacts from the 2nd gmail account.
I have a (probably) related problem. When I entered a new contact in 2.1 I was given the option to choose saving to phone, google, or sim card. Now that I have updated to the official Froyo version, I never get this option. It just saves to my phone. This is a serious problem. Is this just my phone or are others having this problem?
thanks.
I NEVER save to the sim card because it does not use the same format I use in Outlook and it will split a contact with more than 1 phone number into several contacts.
The AOSP Mms.apk has the option to hide non-mobile phone numbers and emails.

Contact Sync Question

So I recently got an HD7 and I've been using it for a while and I'm getting the hang of it. I want to start adding some contacts by importing them from Gmail. My question is, if I import contacts from Gmail, will the contacts be added to the phone itself or to your Windows Live Account?
Sorry if this has been asked before.
Depends... if you "Add" them to the phone, they'll be put on your Windows Live. However, if you simply add the Gmail account to your phone (under Settings -> Email + Accounts -> (Add) Google) and then choose to Sync the settings, they'll be cached on your phone but primarily stored on Google,a nd will not be copied to your other services.
Essentially, no contacts are actually stored on the phone.
When you added a contact, you're prompted to choose which account (google, LIVE...) that you want it to sync to. If you login using Google credentials, and select to sync contacts, then they'll appear on the phone but not be merged/uploaded to LIVE.

[Q] how to delete added accounts in the mail app

On my gmail account on the mail app, I have two emails that link to it. I actually have four, but only two show up. Well, I recently deleted that website and the two email accounts that went with it. I then deleted them from gmail via settings from my gmail account via the browser.
I then deleted my gmail account from the mail app, BUT the two email accounts linked to my gmail account are still there as labels. I can't get raid of them. How?
I tried deleting them when you select folder options, but they just move further down, without getting deleted...
Might be a bug in the Mail app, but the easiest fix that comes to mind is deleting and re-adding the Gmail account.
Hi,
Open mail app, swipe from the left border, select settings, select the account you want to delete, scrool to the bottom of the setting page you have a "delete" button. That's all
Oups, i dont read the last line of the first post

I Need Contact List Setup help

so I have 2 accounts in my phone on google, my work one and my home one. contact sync is off on my work account and is only on on my home account. When I add a contact, at the top it says google (meaning that is going to be where it stores it). I put it in and save it and it saves it to my work account on my phone. I can't find anyway to pick what account should be the default contacts account. Or for that matter, why the hell is is putting it in a contact list that isn't set up to sync (yes I verified that). Does anyone know how I can choose a default contact accout (not for viewing, for saving to)

Dafault is Google, but when you create a new contact tap google then it going to open 3 choices> where to be saved
on the Phone or Sim or Google. its your choice.
nvm: thought you have one account in your phone an the other on Google. :/
I do have a choice. But I don't want a choice. I just want it to be my main phones account
