Phone restarts while recording - Sprint Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

It doesn't seem to matter what recording app I use, after a little while recording during class, my phone restarts and my recording for the lecture is lost. I'm on the MOAR ROM, OA6 kernel (OK4 doesn't work either). I've tried clearing caches, full wipes, and even going back to stock and reinstalling MOAR. It's pretty annoying. Any ideas? Thanks.

camcorder recording freezes / skips / stutters

Hi guys, I'm having issues with the video recorder on my NS. Whenever I try to record video clips the picture and sound slip out of sync, the image freezes, leaving the sound running. The video then continues but is behind the sound.
I can't find any suggestions about how to fix this. Does anyone here have any idea?
I just took some footage of 3 mins to test it again and actually the picture freezes near the end of the video. After that the audio is out of sync. I'm on infin1tyROM 1.1.0. :S

I have the same ROM installed, I mentioned the issue in the thread but someone else has said they don't have the issue, I wonder if it only affects longer clips or if there's something about the way we installed the ROM perhaps?
Well actually it was me stating that it works fine, but now i had to correct it. You got a i9023 or i9020?
I have the 4g and last night I was recording 10 minute segments and didn't see anything wrong. I would heavily suspect if a CPU hog app decided to do something while recording video, that it could cause problems. Out of an hour of recording, I think I might have seen a time when something caused the screen to black out for a second and start a new recording. Maybe.
I9020 here

Well if you found a solution please let me know! I*tried uninstalling some apps, several reboots, dalvik cache wipe, permission fix, different video players, no luck. Maybe it's the UV kernel? I*fear that I*had the same problem on CM7 with stock kernel but I'm not sure...
I'm stock rooted. That's it
Well as soon as I*have time I'll flash back to CM7 with stock kernel and report back.
@tatwamasi could you please test something for me? maybe this fixes the problem: reboot into recovery, wipe dalvik cache then reboot and go to settings, applications, camera and clear data. take 5 mins of video to see if it worked.

Here's a thought. If you transfer the videos to the computer and play them there, do they skip on the pc?

Cheers for the suggestion I'll try that later and report back. Earlier I made a Nandroid backup, did a full wipe, reinstalled the Rom and tested the camera. Video seemed fine then the camera started FC'ing. Not sure what's going on there... I've never had that before. Weird. Back on The backup now.
@herbthehammer I*feel stupid for not having tried that already :S
@tatwamasi have you tried fixing permissions in CWM?
After some testing I can confirm that clearing the camera app data actually solves the problem.
Lol sry for all the * after "I" my desktop keyboard is acting weird.
Having this exact problem on a Sprint NS4G. It has a CM7 nightly installed. Will try clearing the data on the camera app. Hoping that fixes it!

Backup application settings without root?

Is there any way to backup the app settings without rooting?
I do not currently have access to a Windows machine to root my phone but I badly need to restore factory settings as the camera keeps force closing when I switch into video mode.
not possible without root.
You could try clearing the cache.
If you're not taking 3D pictures, you can also try download a new video recording app for now till you can root.
Thanks, I managed to find the Linux rooting method so got it all sorted now.
I still seem to be having issues with the time and widgets on the home screen sometimes freezing though, it must be one of my apps as even from factory settings it triggered it after recovering my backup. I ended up reinstalling most stuff from Market and just using Titanium to restore data where absolutely essential, seems to have reduced the problem.
That said, the problem is like that - one minute it will work fine then suddenly one day the time and widgets will fail to work whenever WiFi is connected. Wish I knew what was triggering it, I'm hoping its a glitch with an app that doesn't like Froyo and it will magically go away with Gingerbread.

[Q] Phone, contacts and messages keep closing

I have Galaxy S with Android 2.3.4 JVR and it works like a charm - with this one exception: sometimes (too often) phone, contacts and messages (sms) keep closing. This happens usually within a second or two after opening up them. There's no force close message, it just returns to the home screen without any warning. If I reopen it, it usually does the same a couple of times, but eventually I get it to open.
At first I thought this must be a memory issue. However, I have Autokiller installed (my phone is rooted) and I have usually >100M free memory. Then I thought it must be Autokiller killing the dialer, contacts or messages apps. BUT: this happened also before I had Autokiller installed, so it can't be that either. The strangest thing is that I tried installing GO SMS Pro and GO Contacts + Dialer, and even they do the same thing occasionally (close immediately after I open them), so it isn't a problem with apps either.
I am bedazzled here, could somebody please help me? This starts to get really annoying, since the dialer, contacts and messages are the feature you normally use most in your phone!
I have the exact same problem! Somebody, please help
the phone app and etc. seem to be corrupt or something
try reflashing. If you keep getting the problem then revert back to your previous rom =/
Is there any way to try to replace only the phone etc. apps without flashing the whole rom?
from my experience no but you can try replacing phone.apk sms.apk etc with the previous rom's apps
The funny thing is that I have a stock 2.3.4 JVR, so it should be stable.
Plus, did I mention that this happens only sometimes? Sometimes they work ok. But this happens often enough to be annoying. You know, when you would have to make a quick phone call you have to open the phone app like 3-4 times, only then you're able to make it. I wondered if the the problem could still be in the dialer, contacts and messaging apps even if the problem occurred only sometimes?
In addition, the calendar app has done this a couple of times. Could it be that there's a conflicting app that's causing this? If so, do you have any suggestion what it would be?
Autokiller made my phone do some really funny stuff. After installing it i was having random reboots and apps crashing so i uninstalled and problem solved. You said it was happening before you installed it though so im just guessing that you need to either wipe cache and dalvik then reboot or do a full wipe and reinstall of your rom. When you do the full wipe go into mounts and storage and wipe system too
Hi and thanks for your comment. What are the effects of wiping the cache and the dalvik cache? Do I lose important data? Or can I do it safely? Sorry, I'm a bit of a n00b with android. I suppose you wipe the cache in download mode, right?
I experience exactly the same issue as you-though I am on stock jvu.I come from 2.3.3, stock as well, using chainfire root both times.
Sometimes phone contacts and message s close immediately after opening them, often several times. and sometimes everythings fine
here you can find some information about dalvik and normal cache wipe..your data will be safe-only first boot will take longer.I will try wiping now, too-reporting back then.
Edit:
For now wiping seems to have worked well and fixed the problem here..I need some more testing though-will keep you up to date here
edit 2: damn! The issue's still there.anyone got more ideas?
G'day!
I have the exact same problem with JVU and I had this problem with 2.3.3 but less frequent. I have no choice but to reboot the phone when it happen. I suspect it's caused by one of the widget (email and Go weather) that I put on the desktop. Going to remove the two widgets from desktop and see if it's help.

Okay, that sounds interesting - though I am not sure wheter a widget could cause this...
I am still running JVU but now with Galaxian Kernel instead of Chainfires root Kernel - flashed with SGS Kernel Flasher and still got root - and it runs very stable and fast 'till now. No more closing of phone, contacts and messages so far -.- since 2 days.
I'll tell you when it happens again, but so far it seemed to be a kernel issue for me...
I've been having the same issues with my Samsung SideKick 4G. messages would keep closing as I was typing them, I would lag and the key I pressed would "press again" like 15 more times, sometimes I just couldn't open a conversation, other times I couldnt answer phone calls cause the UI lagged.
That was all on stock firmware, and I got fed up with it so I tried to flash a custom ROM on it, and before I did that I had it OC'd to 1.2GHz which was actually pretty great. Needless to say, I screwed up on flashing the ROM and now I'm looking for firmware to odin back to stock. =\

Camera - Videos but no photos

I'm running the latest Sultan rom and the latest xposed. Just noticed that my camera apps record video just fine, but no photos are recorded. The apps start normally and act like everything is ok, but after taking a photo (which acts normal), no file is saved. Seems like they're trying to save a file--the back button won't close the apps like usual. There are no error messages, except for Dcam, which says, after a second press of the shutter button, 'Picture taking has failed. What a terrible failure!!'
I've tried clearing caches and rebooting. Any other suggestions? Thanks!
Make sure there's a space of around 2gb left in storage, sometimes it happens because of not enough space in system.
35 gb free. Thanks.
Ok, stray bytes I guess. I wiped system and caches and reinstalled rom and gapps and things are normal again.
This has happened several times since my last post. In every case, reinstalling or updating the rom and gapps restores the functionality of the camera (it happens with all camera apps I have). In time, photos stop saving, videos are always ok. Just like my original post. If anyone has any ideas I'd sure appreciate it.

Instagram and Snapchat cannot record audio while taking video

I've been working through my phone trying to fix this issue and no luck for the past week. My phone is able to record video through its Camera app and Tiktok, and audio on the video is perfect through those apps. However, through Snapchat and Instagram, the video is fine, but the audio is non-existent. I hear a soft static-like noise. I have tried to clear app caches, clear app storages, turn on and on off the ringer, uninstall and reinstall the apps, reboot my phone, and everything else I could research on the internet. I even tried to go into Recovery Mode to Wipe Cache Partition. However, that doesn't seem to be an option anymore? It's supposed to located underneath the Wipe data/Factory reset, however it seems to have been removed. I have the Android 11 update installed. Does anyone else experience this? I have a feeling it's a software issue.
