High Brightness Mode Widget - Galaxy Note5 Themes and Apps

Hello, I'm looking for testers for High Brightness Mode Widget: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=flar2.hbmwidget
have promo codes for the first five people to post here and willing to report back to me.
It will make your screen extremely bright at the touch of a button. However, it requires root.
Works on other Samsung devices with AMOLED screens, so should also work on the Note 5, but I would like confirmation.

Yes sir

Yeah, me too.

I'll test. Running Sprint Note 4 MOAR Note 5 port

I had a couple extra codes, so all of you got one.

Took a couple of installs to get it working but afterwards it works great. Haven't had a chance to run AutoMode yet due to it being 11:45pm...lol. Will run it tomorrow in the daylight on auto and report back. Thanks again for letting me try this out...greatly appreciated!

It works great!
Just like everything you make.
I always enjoyed the kernels you made for my htc one xl

i tried this on my Note 5, i noticed some lag when turning it on and off sometimes, like the button wont click at times, have to press it twice to turn it on and off

Everything works fine.Latest MM stock rom. Thanks Dev.

Nothing I can do about that, it takes some milliseconds to turn on.
Becaue of that, I made it so if you tap a second time within less than a second it does nothing, just so it doesn't go on and off quickly from repeated taps.
Tapping twice within 200milliseconds puts it in auto mode where it will come on automatically in bright environments.

ah ok, nevertheless great app!

Can anyone confirm that the screen gets really bright with this widget enabled? It should be much brighter than if you simply move the brightness slider to max.

It gets a little brighter, not as crazy bright or whatever happens when outdoor mode kicks in but it gets brighter indoors.
***after testing on my note 5 with lux meter from the playstore (on my note 3). I have some results that are slightly more useful than just my eyeball tests***
HBM off
420 on full brightness indoors
590 on full brightness when outdoor mode starts
HBM on
450 on full brightness indoors
590 on full brightness when outdoor mode starts
But when outdoor mode turns off after a few seconds it goes back to 420 and you have to toggle HBM to get it back to 450
Samsung has some weird settings they implement that seem to be affecting our screens performance.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=62643611
They also have a weird way of having autobrightness work differently when you are holding it compared to when it is laying flat on a table. So they have pretty much F'd with the way google intended everything as usual.

display quality gets worse in power saver mode?

So whilst playing around with the power settings, i noticed that when you set it to power saver setting, the screen does like 3-5 flickers, and you can clearly see the picture quality get worse. the colors get bad and everything doesnt look right. now this is not smart dimmer because im pretty sure this happens as soon as you hit the button and not when its just a dark scene or a movie.
try this for me someone, take a look at the screen in normal mode, then hit the power saver one and you will notice the screen slightly flicker and then you will notice the colors would go a little off or off contrast or something.
tell me im not crazy
Everything looks fine on mine.

You are not crazy. It definitely looks washed out or something, the contrast goes screwy. I've noticed that before. I turned off the auto dimming just because it was constantly going back and forth, but set it fairly low and keep it on normal mode. battery life is roughly the same. The screen is what chews up the battery life.
Yep, noticed it too. The contrast lowers and everything starts to look like you've been using a cheap detergent... Also, on power saving mode the light doesn't transition so much as walks the stairs with a bad leg. Very irritating when you have a live wallpaper that simulates a cloudy day scene and the brightness keeps flickering. Turned off auto brightness on day 1, so that's not it.

when using power saver mode, it actually adjusts the contrast of the display which is why it looks more washed out.
at the same time, contrast is improved when using high-performance mode.
so no, no one here is going crazy.

this is correct. its intentional. meant to save power in powersavings mode. if you rooted and have a overclock app installed, like ATP tweaks, that allows you to set the power modes, you can set balanced to 1ghz. it won't trigger the nvidia prism power savings. its only activated when pressing powersavings tab. of you set any other tab to 1ghz, your screen will look fine.
f.y.I. there's a tweak in Nexus7 forum, tegra3, that can disable smartdimmer feature also. smartdimmer isn't just lowering brightness either. you can disable smart dimmer manually or use the flashable zip. check nexus 7 forums for details.

Actually, yes, it *is* smartdimmer - trust me - if you don't believe me, go disable smartdimmer while in powersave mode - you'll see that the screen quality/brightness immediately goes back to what you are used to in Balanced/Performance mode...

Still the same. Iv'e been trying different color backgrounds/brightness levels/power modes and all I see is the screen flickering 2 or 3 times, just making it darker, not washing out the colors.
Just tried power save.
Blacks look a little washed out, not a massive difference here.
Turning on the IPS+ brings everything back contrast wise.
I have smartdummer disabled too.
I'll say essentially no real difference.

Nexus 5 auto brightness problems?

Hey guys,
I'm using my new nexus 5 for about two days now and something seems to be wrong with auto brightness (at least) on my device. The phone makes the screen brighter just fine, but dimming it when it gets in a dark environment doesn't seem to work really well. Can someone give this a try please?
Just turn off the lights in a room and see if the screen adjusts correctly. On mine it doesn't.
Turning on and off auto brightness fixes the issue but as soon as the screen gets brighter again, the problem starts...
Thanks in advance
Gesendet von meinem Nexus 5 mit Tapatalk
Good spot, I seem to experience this as well ! Exactly as you say works fine until the brightness gets set higher then it wont ever fall back its as if it can never lower only increase brightness.... odd!
Did you give it a minute to adjust?
Since my Nexus 5 isn't here yet this is what I've observed on stock Android in the Galaxy Nexus and other phones:
While it should go down after some time it's pretty common for auto brightness not to dim down as soon as it gets darker. You don't want your brightness to jump up and down just because the lighting changes for a second. And since turning the brightness up is much more relevant than down it goes up almost instantly but before dimming back down it monitors the environment for a while.
When you turn auto brightness off and on again you force the sensor into a new reading so this should set the brightness to the correct level without delay.
But it wouldn't be the first time auto brightness was bugged on a phone.
The delay really annoyed me on my tablet running vanilla 4.2 so installed lux which works well. You set the brightness how you want it at a given light level and then it sets the brightness according to the ambient light each time you wake it up and holds that setting until the next time you wake it up... best of both worlds.

You're right gokpog,it does work I just didn't give it time. It took around 10 seconds to change the backlight levels which is much longer than the nexus 4 which is why I didn't notice it. Hopefully there is a more sensitive curve in the future
Sent from my Nexus 5 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yep this has been the case with stock android for a while. Feature or flaw you decide but it is what it is and is across the board no matter what device if its using stock android on it

Well it doesn't seem to work as expected to me: go to a bright place, then to a very dark one. Yes it will dim a bit but not quite enough. Remain in the dark room and turn off auto brightness. Then turn it on again. The screen will get significantly darker than it was before

I have find too that the automatic brightness take time to decrease brightness, also increase, but the most annoying is that with the same level of light and without moving the phone, the brightness goes up and down erratically, without a reason, it didn't happen with any of my previous phones
I just installed this app today, I've had similar problems that weren't present on my N4. With this app running, when I turn the phone screen toward a light, it brightens, and back to face a darker place it dims almost immediately. To give me more battery life I've tuned the brightness curve to be a bit low, N5's auto seemed to be too bright for me overall anyway. Be sure to tinker with both the settings and advanced settings areas, by default the changes are sharp but you can make them fade instead. Fixed the problems I had at least.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.nnevod.loggraph
I have the same problem with my Nexus 5.
Additionally, since day one, I've noticed that the phone consistently auto adjusts the screen to be slightly brighter than necessary given the ambient light.
I just noticed this issue last night, or at least it's similar. I was reading in bed for a few hours and occasionally (maybe every 15 minutes) the screen would suddenly dim to about half brightness and then brighten back to where it was originally. It was driving me nutz. I've also had a few random reboots, though not while I was using it. I'd notice it on my table booting up. FYI, this is stock with the latest update, no root or unlocking, and still has plenty of free space in memory. I've only had it for about 4 days.

Update or bad screen?

Hey people
Got my smart watch about 4 days ago and it was all good until tonight and now for some reason i can't see the clock anymore unless i press the power button :S i could have sworn it had a low light mode and the clock was visable ok but since tonight i can't see the time unless there's a light pointing straight at the watch. I hooked it upto the service centre thing and updated it through that but hasn't helped.
am I going mad here and just seeing things? :S
EDIT: i also noticed when i turn it off i get some weird colours appearing in the clockface some pinks/purples. i don't understand it was ok a couple of hours ago and it's been on my wrist the whole time :S
Did you try to reset the watch? Also our you have any custom clocks installed, remove them. As after reset, Sony smartwatch app will reinstall them on the watch, once the watch and the phone are connected.
On your watch, go to settings and tap reset watch.

Just to make it clear, you are not talking about the low power mode right? No backlight, but can be still seen by people in ambient light??? Maybe you should take a picture of the watch so we can clearly see what is going on.
At night my sw2 turns of the screen completely. But when I MOVE the watch it turns on the clock on the display. I think it has an accelerometer that turns off the screen when no movement is detected.

It is a feature to save battery when it isn't worn.
I am more curious as to the "watch (display) turns on from moving it". Does the SW2 have an accelerometer? My watch display doesn't kick on when I move it. Or was this a feature of the earlier SmartWatches?

I believe SW2 does have an accelerometer. Put your watch on a table, leave it untouched for while, screen completely turns off. Not even the low power watch mode is displayed. But once you move it, low power watch comes back on (without the backlight). I observed it many times when it was charging and when left at the bed side table.
But it is not utilized for backlight function. That is a missing feature people are asking for. But I don't really need it. Just like a regular watch, I press a button to turn the light on when I can't see it in the dark.

Wow... I didn't even notice the screen going completely black after sitting for a while. I am still on watch honeymoon, and either the watch is on my wrist or turned off and on the dresser. But sure enough, it does go into a deeper "sleep" mode and wakes up when I pick it up. Nice!
I do see that having it wake to the backlit mode would be nice but it would seem to kill the battery since when worn it would be in more constant movement. Unless they tuned the accelerometer to only wake when a more significant motion happens.

Yeah the previous iteration of smartwatch from Sony did not have always on watchface and it was a necessity. And to see the time you had to turn on the display. One way was to double tap on the watch screen to wake it up. Another way was to light up the screen by lifting your arm and turning the watch towards you. But the second way never really worked reliably.
But I don't think SW2 needs that. As we already have always on watch with great readability even in places where there little light.

Anyone have this auto brightness issue?

I noticed that my auto brightness will adjust and get bright when I turn on a light but then immediately when I turn the light off the brightness doesn't go back down. Anyone else have this? I'm guessing it's software?

Yes. I play with that by keeping my s6 under the lamp. Super high brightness levels.
I was just about to make this thread when I noticed yours.
Actually for me, I get low brightness levels it's very annoying. When I'm in moderate lighting conditions like normal lit room I get almost lowest brightness, when I move phone out in the open area, like outside, the screen lights up like it should, but in moderate lighting contitions it is very bothersome to have lowest brightness.
I'm now thinking of searching a good auto-brightness app. Any suggestions?

I cannot say any specific reproduction steps, but it looks like I have similar problems..
Galaxy S6 is my first Samsung device ever (before M9 I was HTC fan). Comparing experience with other devices I had - auto-brightness works definitely in a strange way.
Under direct lamp light - it's adjusted pretty much okay, but in a normally lit room - it's almost always too dark, and I need to adjust auto-brighntess level manually. So.. for me it's really not auto-brightness.
P.S. labas

Same thing here. No solution so far. I tried to install velis from the play store, it is not working. I decided to return my edge emerald green ( ) because of this issue. In a normal lit room I get always low brightness, I have also the S6 flat to compare, side by side, and the S6 flat is almost at the same brightness if I set it at 50% and the edge at 100% (both in manual setting). Unbelievable!
I have S6 FLAT, and the autobrightness work ok if the phone are horizontal. But if i have the phone in my hand (in an angle more than 10 ° / 20 °) the auto brightnes bright the screen, but when i turn the light off the brightness doesnt back down. But if the phone are horizontal (0° in my hand or in a table, the brightnes bright up and down without problems)
There is a new 5.1.1 minor update available. Has this solved the brightness bug of the s6 edge by chance?

Just little different
I have a s6 flat and my screen is always on full brightness when auto brightness is on.
Tried the light senson and it seems to work fine (0 to 1 lux on dark room, 400 to 600 lux near to a light bulb). This problem started two days ago.

auto brightness issue
I also got an auto brightness issue on my s6 flat version. Specifically it's about the adapting to low light conditions after being in high light e.g. turning on a bed lamp for a second (screen lights up) and after turning the lamp off s6 stays too bright and does not want to get back to low brightnes. The thing that helps is either lock/unlock the screen which makes it wake up with proper brightness or uncheck/ check the autobrightness box at the bar.
Is it commonly known issue that Samsung knows about or is there any possibility to get it back to normal on my own? It drives me crazy in a flagship device!

I have got the same problem and I'm dead sure it is a sortware issue. I tested the light sensor and it can update on different light conditions no matter the orientation is. I also installed Velis Auto Brightness app and it fixed the issues so Samsung should fix that since 3rd party apps can.
I too have the same issue. The brightness ramps up as its supposed to under bright light but doesnt go down under low light/no light unless i do one of the following:
1) keep my phone horizontal or at angle of >180 degrees
2) lock/unlock the phone by pressing the power button
3) manually tick/untick the auto-brightness check box
Really annoyed. I still under the return period so not really sure its a hardware defect or not
Well, unfortunately I'm facing the same problem :crying:
What are the differences to phones which do not have this issue repectively is there something in common who have this issue.
The biggest changes I've made to the phone are: Arrow Launcher (MS) and radiant theme (no root etc.)
I got the same problem, autobrightness adjust only when phone is placed horizontally. Any news in this regard?
unfortunately no
Do you still have this issue? Because I have it on every single ROM, Custom or Stock, no mather...
I have found the max_brightness adjustment, (sys/class/backlight/panel/max_brightness) but I can't find a similar file for minimum brightness. Anyone know it's location? At the moment I'm using a third party app as well, but would rather have the system fix.

Pixel 3 screen flash

Didn't see this posted here yet, but forgive me if I missed it.
Trying to find out if anyone has seen or heard of any acknowledgement from Google regarding this. My new Pixel 3 (Verizon; non XL) since day 1 has had an annoying issue with the screen flashing when ambient screen engages. I have my settings with alwayson set to off, and new notifications set to on. If the screen is asleep and I get a text or any notification, the ambient screen wakes and will initially make the entire screen flash white very quickly.
I do not get a flash of the screen in any other scenario when the phones on, it only seems to be when the screens totally asleep and the ambient screen wakes. I can unlock the phone or hit the power button to fully wake the phone to my home screen with no flashing. Its not every single time, but its very often. I do notice sometimes when it doesn't flash the whole screen, the time or text on the ambient display will be at full brightness when it first wakes for a split second and then will go to the dim text Im used to seeing.
Replaced the phone through Verizon. Got another brand new one with the same exact problem. This one even flashes on reboot occasionally just before the white "Google" screen pops up. Google had me send them a bug report this time and are supposed to be having their dev team look at it.
WHY.
Mine did it once
Sent from my Pixel 3 using Tapatalk
I've also now noticed mine will flash in Instagram when I "like" something lol. Just the picture flashes within the app itself in that case, not the whole screen. Such a weird thing, that may have something to do with the app on the new pixel? I don't even know anymore.
I just saw the white flash. It was only for a few ms but it looked like a full brightness white flash on the whole screen. I had just set my phone down and I think the AOD was coming on.
Weird.
Yeah I have a feeling this is happening on way more devices than we're reading about. I hope it's addressed. Sometimes my notification audio cuts out real quick too. Hoping it's just all memory related.
I have this weird kind of screen flickering on my device as soon as I use the fingerprint area to turn the phone on. It is very faint and fast but its like static lines for half a second when the screen comes on??

Strange, I haven't had any issues like that using the fingerprint reader or just hitting the power button. Mine are all directly related to ambient screen waking.
My Pixel 3 is doing the same thing when I unlock it. Flashes like taking a selfie... I have even looked for the selfie to no avail.
It does not do this regularly, very random.

Report it to Google. I feel like it's something they're aware of (I hope) but support certainly isn't saying so if they are.
I saw a post on Android Police about bug trackers and read in some of the comments that people were having problem with screen flashing. Some of them said it was related to the always on display. Mine was flashing like white static lines. But it was only for half a second when you turn on the screen and it didnt happen every time, it was random. I turned off the AOD and it never happened again. Kinda sucks cause I like AOD. But that tells me it is a software problems and not hardware.
I turned off AOD too, for 1 day; the next day I turned AOD back on. I have not had a screen flash since (a few days now).

Try rebooting. I bet it's still happening you just may not be noticing. I've had my AOD off for a while and as soon as I turn the new notifications option it comes back. Not every time but still often.
I'm having the same issue, doesn't happen all the time but I can reproduce it usually by unlocking the device, locking it then when ambient display comes on, unlock it and the screen flashes/flickers. I've only managed to do it with ambient screen set to always on.
I've RMA'd this morning so I'll report back when the new phone comes.
I hope you RMA's for other reasons too because it is likely that you will get a phone with the same flickering problem. I think it is a software issue esp since it goes away after we turn off AOD.

I just find it strange that people are having the flicker in different scenarios, like mine is only when ambient is set to always on but other people are having the issue when it's set to double tap etc. Anyway I guess I'll see when the new phone comes.

Yeah let us know please once you get the new phone. It seems like it is hit or miss with people so you might get lucky and avoid it.

Quick update. My new phone arrived this morning and I've managed to get the screen to flash once so far where as my old one would do it 8 times out of 10. I feel like this is a poor display hardware problem rather than software.
I believe or rather am hoping that because it only happens when you turn on AOD that it is a software issue and not a hardware one. The only way something will be done is enough people complain on a bug tracker.
