Is it possible to configure adoptable storage on our Z5???? Port Modaco's work??? - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Paul O'brien shows how is possible to configure adoptable storage on your S7 / S7 Edge without root.
Here the information:
http://www.modaco.com/news/android/...e-adoptable-storage-on-your-s7-s7-edge-r1632/
The question is... Is it possible to port on our Z5???, maybe some dev colud look this and will try it.
I'm not a dev, only I saw this information and share with us.
Regards!!

Uhm - I *think* this is working ...
I've followed the instructions, and the first time I ran the sm partition command it would error out with a "failed with 'null'" error message. I did some more sm commands like forcing adoptable to true (and then back to false). At this point my phone rebooted ... when it rebooted I ran the sm partition command again, and it seems to have completed successfully.
Looking at the storage section of the phone's settings, shows that I have:
-70395412480.00 B of device storage used of a total of 32.00GB and both my internal and SD Card are listed as storage. Selecting the SD card for more details and I am able to (re)format as portable, so I *think* this has worked.
Good luck!

Having played around a bit more, I'm now not so certain. Apps don't see the extra 128GB as internal storage, although they don't see any external storage either

Hi!
Do you think that you Can solve this problem??
Good luck bro!!

A further update from yesterday ... I think it's kind of working. I've repartitioned my SD card: 64GB to portable and 64GB to regular SD card storage.
I've selected the portable storage in settings and migrated data to it. Further app installations then seem to use this storage rather than the 32GB of phone storage. So far so good (the displayed value of available internal storage is still a large negative number though).
However, some apps do not see the extra internal storage:
PocketCasts does see it.
Google Music does not.
Plex does not (but doesn't see portable storage on my other Marshmallow device, and this seems to be a Plex problem).

What about your Sony camera app? Mine throws a memory error and won't take photos until I migrate my data back to internal storage (I have formatted the who SD card as private.

Hmmm... Yeah, because my SD card is formatted 50:50 I'm able to run the camera app. I'm not able to set the storage location as internal though. It has to be on the SD card.

Micro SD Card Issues

After some research, I'm starting to hate kikat lol.
Apparently third party apps can't write to external storage any more....so no more setting downloaded files to the micro sd card :/
I know it's for more security but it sucks. Wet need to get some custom roms going!!

There's pros and cons, android central wrote up a good summery on this feature on Kit Kat. The Pro is more security in your device as when "apps" have full range they'll store all kinds of crap here, there, everywhere. Now they can only be stored locally on internal storage, nice feature imo and why it's standard we have a 32gb internal storage device. Now if this was a run of the mill 16gb internal storage device that would be a different story .
Idea is what is stored on SD card stays on SD card and what is stored on internal storage stays there so there is no mix/matching going on and confusion. Keeps things running more smoothly and secure.
Now if you download mp3 and videos all day long on your phone and have to wait til you get to a laptop to connect via usb and manually transfer it all to SD card and delete off internal memory, yes this can be a hassle. I personally like the idea of all this overall. Only feature i wish we had was being able to transfer internal files to external sd card with a file explorer app.
No worries, once S-Off is available none of this will be a concern anymore .

Yes, the only feature I want it to transfer files from the internal memory to the external. All the other reasons for that not working are legitimate.
Once S-Off is here I will be happy

No way to format SD card as Private or 50/50 *Internal* ?? Useless..

I have an S7 /w 32GB that has been used up 99%. I used ADB to format my 128GB Evo + /w 50/50 however, this has not fixed any storage issued. In fact, I cannot even use the new Internal partition; the phone does not access through ES File Manager. The phone also does not move any apps unto it, and does not use the free space!
My Internal space is 99% used up and Apps even Gallery are telling me to free up space; instead of using the 64GB that's unused on my SD Internal storage.... basically useless!
Seems others in North America are having same issue. Any ideas?? Thanks, the 32GB of internal storage honestly does NOT cut it, especially with the massive Gear VR apps I have installed! :crying:
Take a picture of the settings>storage screen.

Did you hit the migrate data option after setting up the sd card?
I have gone back to just using it as external but essentially the storage/settings screen read a total of 200+GB for some reason, it wasn't correct but the reading of the rest was correct.
Internal 99% full
sd card 0 apps/0 data
sd card (external) is what it looked like.
Also I do not recall it ever asking me to migrate anything... I tried it several times.

Once in the internal card you created, you should have hit the hamburger menu and seen Migrate Data. If you did not do this your problem is now answered. It would have moved many GB of data from the phone to the adopted SD.
After I did the migrate, I still had errors from Google Music saying that there was not enough storage for my downloads. I've rebooted a few times and deleted and remade my playlist. Still getting the error message.
Some of the Oculus apps are really amazing but it is really annoying that they don't offer any options to store at lease the media files on the external storage. Also all their files are hidden and I can't find where they keep them. I'm on the verge of getting rid of the whole application and just use the VR set like a regular google cardboard!

Adoptive storage?

It is natively supported.
Have you tried to add data like a jpeg or Mp3? Then add the card to the phone? At first when I did mine, I THOUGHT I couldn't find it... But it was a case of looking in the right settings location...

as in in settings > memory > default location? ive got mine set to sd card, i was wondering if we can add apps there too.
My understanding is that adoptive storage will combine the phone's internal storage together with the sd card you have. So it's 64gb internal storage + (say) 64gb sd card. The new amount of storage you will see should be 128gb. That's how adoptive storage should work.
In my Mate 9 i dont see this setting. External storage is still used as "portable storage". It should be natively supported in Android 6.0 and above, but i do not think it is implemented in the Mate 9

How can I have more storage?

I've got a Sony Xperia m4 aqua (E2303) with 8gb of internal storage with a Sd card of 32gb, but I can't transfer everything to the Sd card.
How can I do it and have 40gb reals (fusionate the internal storage and the Sd card)?
Do I need root?
If it's impossible please also answer.

What do you mean you can't transfer anything to extsdcard?
Are you trying to move apps to SD card?
What android version do you have?
You can't put the 8GB and the 32GB together as one, it doesn't work that way.
If you're trying to do what I think you're trying to do, yes, you will need root to do it.

Adoptable storage option was introduced with the android marshmallow release. Infact you can use internal + external sdcard as one combined storage.
Because mixing the storage, especially with cheap and slow sd cards, may slow down the phone and result in data loss, some OEMs have removed the adoptable storage option.
If you have a rooted phone you can set up the storage manually jusing adb shell.
The guide is written for a Samsung device but should work on any compatible phone with android 6 or higher.

Yeah, I know of adoptable storage, that's the point of asking what android version he have, if he had marshmallow I was going to tell him to use the adoptable storage feature.
But still, the adoptable storage let's you use extsd as internal but it doesn't technically make them "one" seamlessly or without issues in other places, that was my point when I said you they couldn't be made into one.

Of course you're right. The storage physically stays the same but becomes usable as one. His Sony probably runs android 6.0.1.

I didn't mean the physical sense, I might that adoptable storage doesn't act as internal storage in every way, there are some things that don't quite work the same between them.

I wouldn't call it restrictions. By design it's considered to be combined space but in practice, I'm just saying that they aren't used as one issue-lessly, some things don't like playing well with adoptable storage but work just fine with the actual internal. Basically I guess I'm saying it acts as the same but doesn't work as the same. On its face it's the same but under the skin it isn't. Details that don't have much impact on its usage but "can".

How do you know? The latest official release for his phone is 6.0.1.
@daninguno
We produced a bunch of text while discussing the feature itself whitout answering your question.
- If your phone is running Android 6 or newer you can adopt your external sdcard
- If the feature isn't offered in Sony's menu interface you need to root your phone and set up the storage using adb shell following a guide
- class 10 sd card means write speed of at least 10MB/s - your phone's CPU could handle much higher speeds - a faster sd card would be a good option e.g. SanDisk Extreme
- if your sd card bricks you will lose ALL of your data without the possibility to restore it as files may be stored splitted to both storages
- You need to know if you really need the storage. Its only necessary for installing apps. All other files like photos, videos, music, movies can be stored on the ext sd card directly.
- rooting your device will grant you some usefull options if you need and know how to use them but you should spend some hours to understand the process and possible (side-)effects
- rooted or not - delete all non needed crap from your phone. Installing only apps you really need urgently greatly improves the user experience on every phone - nothing is worse than a lagging user interface
- keep in mind that every app that suggerates you to speedup your phone and improve security will do the complete opposite which means slowing it down, and collecting your personal data

With adoptable storage, you won't see a difference in where you store your apps. It treats internal and external as the same thing.
Adoptable storage gives you more space to use as internal but it makes everything a little slower in the process. It doesn't improve performance, it actually loses a bit of performance, it only gives you more internal storage and that's it.

Link2SD in Mobile Legends

Hi guys! Since my phone has really not enough storage for Mobile Legends, (Samsung J2 Prime; SM-G532G), I rely on Link2SD. The app seems to be working as intended to. However, whenever I transfer Mobile Legends to the SD card using Link2SD, it messes up the game. After I transferred, I launched ML and the UI is f'ed up. Lots of missing textures on the UI. I figured that ML looks for its downloaded files on a specific location. But since I transferred it to the SD card, it's confused on where it should look for all of its files that's why it displays missing textures (black boxes). Is there any way to make ML locate its downloaded files on the SD card?
i already tried that and got the same problem. well i guess the only solution is clear some internal storage and install it on your internal storage

What do you mean clear some internal storage? So you're saying I should install it on my default device storage?
EDIT: Nevermind, I get it lol. I'm hoping for someone to tell if there's any other way or software that is able to modify the app's post install location.

If your device has android 6.0 Marshmallow, you should try using the Adoptable Storage feature that is built in to Marshmallow instead of Link2SD. It should work better than Link2SD and you won't have to do anything special because the device will see your internal storage and your external storages one continuous "drive", then it won't matter "where" the app is actually stored because the device will see no difference between the two locations.
