Phone actually starts when battery run out - General Questions and Answers

Hi, when my phone (Galaxy S4) turns off due to low battery, I can actually turn it on again and it boots. However, when it finishee booting, it turns off istantaneously. I can do this a lot of time (over 100!) and the battery won't run out of juice. I think the battery might have some more juice to use for the turned-on phone, so my question is:
Can I recover this battery in order to correctly send information to the phone about its status?
It's an original samsung battery and I never replaced it, but maybe it isn't yet time to replace, since it seems it has a lot of juice left. Should I madly press the power button until it won't start up (and maybe reset the status indicator in some way)? or maybe there are some of the contacts on the battery to short circuit to do so?
Any suggestion will be appreciated thank you!

[Q] Don't shut down when out of battery?

Hi, I been looking around but can't find an answer for this so here goes:
I'd like my phone to NEVER shut down on low battery. I'm not talking about the miss calculated battery stats, but the (I assume) built-in shutdown when I am down to 2-3 % left.
When this happens (I tend to forget to charge my Charge), I usually turn it on and call people back which gives me around 10-30 seconds of talk at least 4-5 times before the phone is finally dead (And showing 0%).
What bugs me is that each time I waste battery on the phone starting up again, checking the SD card, firing up display etc etc. I'd rather spend that juice on talking.
So... anyone know of any tricks to tell the phone to just keep ticking till it cant no more...?
Thanks,
I don't know of a way, and even if I did, that's an extraordinarily bad idea. It shuts down in low battery situations for a reason. This isn't a simple feature phone. Android is a full-fledged Linux operating system, and just losing power can cause major data corruption if it happens at the wrong time.

I know this. However, corruption would not be in the firmware, merely in the user storage and I factory reset my phone all the time in the blink of second. Everything I have on the phone is constantly unloaded and easily restored; the phone is in itself just a hub for everything cloud (to use a overused buzzword).
So question is still there
My phone doesn't shut off until it is at critical level, <1% battery. I've even had my phone on before when it was displaying 0% battery, and it didn't turn itself off until it had to. I haven't had my phone shut down on its own until it was essentially dead, both with my Charge and Fascinate.
So...? Recalibrate?
So, it may sound like I need to re-calibrate my battery (again) ?
Is it possible that the phone will need more than one round of charge/drain/charge to show/use the correct battery charge?
It shouldn't if you do it properly. You need to let it cycle from 100% to 0% without restarting, flashing, wiping data, or anything similar. Just charge the phone to 100%, unplug it as soon as you can after it is fully charged, and then allow it to drain until it turns off, and recharge it again fully and you should be good to go.
Also, I thought that I read somewhere that if you ran the battery down to absolute 0, you kill the battery totally

You'll never have to worry about that on a cell phone. When the phone shows 0%, you'll still have a bit over 3V in the battery. Cell phones have a very narrow range that they work over (about 4.2-3V). Outside of that, there's not enough voltage to power the phone, so it will never be able to fully discharge the battery.
It is still a really bad idea to drain the battery all the way down to zero. Buy another battery and carry it with you, if you must. Lithium-Ion does not like to be discharged drastically and charged drastically repeatedly. It likes to cycle at a higher range.
It sounds like you are draining the battery as far as you can as often as possible. This is no good in my experience.
I bought the charging dock that charges a spare battery and comes with a spare (OEM) battery also. When ever I go to leave the house and I realize I forgot to charge my phone, I just swap the battery and I have 100% instantly. If this was a problem for me while I was out, or if I go on a long trip, I'd just carry the spare battery with me one way or another.
I'm no technical expert, but it seems like this article may be somewhat relevant to the conversation.

[Q] Is my phone dead? :(

1. The phone won't turn on
2. The charging indicator doesn't light up when I try to charge the battery.
3. One of the sensors on the top left turns dim red in color when I connect the charging cable
4. I can't hard reset either
thanks
Did the battery die all the way? Or did you flash a radio without checking the md5? If its a borked radio install say hello to a 500 dollar paper weight if its the battery your gonna have to charge it in another phone cause I'm not sure if cwm 5.0.2.7 has powered off charging

Yes we need a couple of info first. Also we need every information we can get in the last events before the phone got bricked. Like what did you do? what ROM? What's the status of the phone? Battery?
The more the details the better we could assist you.
Sounds like when my first Mytouch 3g broke, it would turn on the first couple of times going into a bootlope at the HBoot. It also didnt respond to charging or any other battery i tried.
Thanks for the reply strapped. I haven't flashed a radio. I did flash the virtuous infinity rom though. I'm not certain if that affected the radio. I did, however, let my battery die all the way. Do you know why one the sensors on the top left corner turns dim red when I connect the charging cable?

Oh crap the battery die all the way problem
I think your battery is dead.s
Saw dozens of problems like this on the my previous device's forum.
Li Ion batteries have this fuse inside it in which it trips off when the battery gets discharged to a certain voltage. If it does your battery goes into a suicide mode in order to protect the phone.
basically the best thing to take good care of your battery is not let it drain lower than 40% and not fully charge it to 90%.
discharging it too low drains it's lifespan drastically. While charging it too high also drains it's lifespan.
Over-discharging Lithium-ion
Li-ion should never be discharged too low, and there are several safeguards to prevent this from happening. The equipment cuts off when the battery discharges to about 3.0V/cell, stopping the current flow. If the discharge continues to about 2.70V/cell or lower, the battery’s protection circuit puts the battery into a sleep mode. This renders the pack unserviceable and a recharge with most chargers is not possible. To prevent a battery from falling asleep, apply a partial charge before a long storage period.
Battery manufacturers ship batteries with a 40 percent charge. The low charge state reduces aging-related stress while allowing some self-discharge during storage. To minimize the current flow for the protection circuit before the battery is sold, advanced Li-ion packs feature a sleep mode that disables the protection circuit until activated by a brief charge or discharge. Once engaged, the battery remains operational and the on state can no longer be switched back to the standby mode.
Do not recharge lithium-ion if a cell has stayed at or below 1.5V for more than a week. Copper shunts may have formed inside the cells that can lead to a partial or total electrical short. If recharged, the cells might become unstable, causing excessive heat or showing other anomalies. Li-ion packs that have been under stress are more sensitive to mechanical abuse, such as vibration, dropping and exposure to heat.

Cheers guys. Here's every bit of information I can recollect
A few days ago I created a nandroid backup and formatted my sd card via the PC.
I flashed the latest version of CWM recovery
I flashed the virtuous infinity rom 1.33 alpha v3 and then flashed the 1.35 beta 1 update.
Then i copied some music on to the SD card and installed a couple of apps.... nothing out of the ordinary.
The phone worked fine the last couple of days but I don't remember letting the battery die all the way. I should add that I have a dodgy battery; a couple of months ago my dear girlfriend spilled her drink and beer went in to back of my phone... since then the keyboard doesn't work (some keys work but its basically dead) and the battery has been affected as well since it now only lasts 3-4 hours after a full charge....but this issue can't have caused the problem I'm now having because the dead keyboard and dodgy battery have been around for a few months...
Last night, however, I think I let the battery die all the way and at some point, when I tried to turn it on, the phone vibrated as it does when you hold the power button, however, the screen didn't turn on. Since then, nothing has changed. When I connect the phone to the PC, it makes a couple of "connection" noises but I can't access the SD card or contents.
by saying latest CWM is it the 6.0 touch based CWM by chance?
sorry mate, i meant 5..0.2.7.
That's the CWM I'm using so it's safe. I'm also on latest VI for weeks without problem.
So it all points out to your battery.
Phone vibrating to power button means it's responding perfectly. Not sure about the light on the sensor only htc technician can tell.
But what I can say is if your trackpad button lights out red always then you got a brick on your hand.
Nope the trackpad isn't red so I guess that's a good sign. I've ordered a new battery and should have it later this week. Let's see if that fixes the issue. Will report back. Thanks all!
So, a new battery has arrived, however, it hasn't helped as the phone won't charge (no orange light) or turn on...... Since I live in Australia, I don't know anyone else with this phone. Is there any other way for me to revive my brick of a phone?? Thanks

Get a universal charger for your battery.
Sent from Spaceball One.
This is a rough situation. Even with my DS I've had situations where nothing would happen when I tried to restart it, in particular when I let the system run all the way down. It is as if the battery needs to have some charge for it to charge more. I have three batteries though (the stock & two Anker 1900's) so when this happens I just swap out the battery with one that I charged in the external charger, and I haven't had any real issues with them long-term. Since you bought a battery, what battery was it, and do you think it was charged when you got it, and do you have an external charger to verify that the charge is solid when you put it back in the phone? Your phone may be completely dead however, but at this point, I don't think anybody on the thread really can tell. This make sense? I don't want to say, "buy a set of Anker 1900's with an external charger" but it was cheap enough vs. the cost of the phone, and the DS does seem to be a good one overall.
Hi All,
So I got an external charger for the battery and it arrived yesterday. I then proceeded to charge the battery and hours later, no luck. The phone still doesn't turn on. When I hit the power button, one of the sensors on the top left turns red slightly, shortly after which the phone vibrates. However, it doesn't turn on.
Where do I go from here?
Thanks
have you tried to disassemble your phone at all? you said liquid was spilled in it, could take time for corrosion to turn up. maybe a little electronic parts cleaner or rubbing alcohol may help out
Nope I haven't tried to disassemble it yet but is that the only option remaining? If yes, I might have to give it a go because this phone is now as useful to me as a brick, in its current state.

[Q] grey battery icon on boot

Device:
VZW Blue SGS3 32GB, original battery
The issue:
This only happens when the device turns itself off due to low battery. When I try to turn on the phone it shows am empty battery icon (i.e., no green or red) with a huge grey recycle type symbol in the center of the battery (a circular grey version of the green recycle symbol, with two half circles instead of three corners of a triangle). This image flashes on screen for maybe 3 seconds and then immediately powers off.
At this point the phone doesn't respond to normal reboot measures (hold power button, hold power + volume, etc). The only way to get the phone to respond is to re-seat the battery. Then, when you plug the power cord in, it will vibrate once then show the battery icon again and turn off.
At some random point in time the phone "revives" itself. Here's where the fun begins. When it "revives" itself (can be anywhere from 10 mins to 10 hours later) the battery looks like it was charging the entire time (i.e., after 2 hours it has a 40% charge)! One time when it revived it was fully charged!
Background:
This happens on the stock ROM as well as Slim Bean (2.6 & 2.7). That's half the reason I went with Slim Bean...exceptional battery life. And, it has worked, as it's only happened twice since switching to Slim Bean. It was happening once a week with the stock ROM because the battery would frequently go below 15% without my knowledge. Now, sure, I can control this by making sure the battery never gets down to 15%. However, a $600 device shouldn't lock up just because the battery gets low!
I did call VZW about this and they were pretty much clueless. They didn't seem to be familiar with that symbol. Their only suggestion was a new battery. I will take them up on the offer, just to get a free battery, but I really don't think it's the battery. If it was the battery then you would imagine this should happen randomly and not just when the battery was low. To me it sounds like the battery charge/protection circuit flaking out. Here's the real thing to consider to discount the battery: the grey icon remains even when the battery itself is at 100%.
Has anyone else seen this problem? I'm at a loss because I can't even google for it...the search terms are too common. So if anyone knows a specific name for this problem, do share!

Whenever u let ur battery drain way 2manytimes to d red zone w/o charging b4 it gets 2 d yellow warning signal - ur puttin 2much work on ur battery - and it shud eventully need 2b replaced.
Lol, same exact thing that is happening to my phone. Ive learned to deal with it because my phone has physical damage was tl buy a stronger charger or keep the one I already had and not let the phone die. The things you described is 100% my phone lol.

[Q] Battery charge indicators show different values when phone is off or on

Hi. I searched for an answer to this weird problem but couldn't seem to find a similar issue. So here it goes.
When my phone is off and I plug it to recharge the battery, after a due amount of time (or even the whole night) the indicator shows a full green battery and states 100%: fine. But ... as soon as I turn the phone on, the percentage indicator in the top right every time shows a figure between 82-84%. So I need to plug the charger back on again (this time while the phone is on) and after a while I get the 100% on the indicator.
This has happened since I bought the device and with both my (new) batteries. Pointless to say, I did try to reset the battery stats a number of times to correct the issue. No joy.
Am I the only one experiencing this? Any clue on how to fix this discrepancy? Granted it's not a big deal, but still a little annoying.
Thanks
Mike

What might be happening is that your device uses a lot of power in order to boot up. 16% of battery life seems a bit strange though.
The other thing that might occur is that the threshold for the green light to be lit is at about 84-86% (meaning: if the battery is more than 84% or something charged, show the green light).
What I suggest doing is just leave your phone on all the time and perhaps reboot it only when necessary.
As far as I know, there aren't really any solutions, but maybe you should try contacting support from the manufacturer of your device. Perhaps they know more about the subject.
Thanks exenia121,
It's definitely a weird thing. And i was more curious to know if I was the only one to report this. There must be probably a strange surge on boot up. In fact after the recharge of the phone (while being on) was completed (100%) I turned it off. But when I powered it after a couple of hours I was back at 84%. Hmmm ....

(G930F) Phone shuts off at 40% HELP!

Hi, my sisters gave to me her old Galaxy S7 and I refurbished it: new cover, new display and new battery. Now I have a problem: when the phone reaches 40/30% of charge, it just shut down, no alert, nothing, the screen just goes black and if I try to restart it nothing happens, it's dead! When I attack the charger, it says the battery is at 0%!
I don't know what to think... the battery is new and this isn't the first time something like this happens: my previous phone (a Huawei P8 Lite) had the same exact problem; at 15% it just shutted down so I thought it could be the power outlet or the charger but I changed them both (now I even have an original Samsung charger!)... What could be the problem?
You didn't change the charging board when you were refurbishing the phone, right? You didn't change the whole motherboard as it seems.
Five things I can advise you to do:
Try battery calibration tips found everywhere.
Try simple factory reset.
Try installing the latest stock firmware, erasing everything in the procedure.
Head for custom ROMs.
Change some EFS components about the battery, it helped me somehow.
Did the previous owner had the same issue?
Thanks for reply btw no, I didn't change the motherboard since it worked just fine for my sister, the only problem was the previous battery that discharged pretty fast;
1. I calibrated the battery two times already, no fix :/
2. Did it already :/
3. Already did it
4. Guess I have to try
5. Is there a guide online to do it?
No, my sisters didn't have this problem, fast discharging battery aside, the phone didn't just shut down.
(sorry for my poor english)

On stock ROM, my device has a magnificent battery that I couldn't find in any other ROMs, although much of the ROMs has a great battery backup. So for you having such an issue, makes think maybe there is a problem about your new battery.
Try reverting back to the old battery, and check if it does the same loop.
EFS is probably the most important partition in your device, it is risky, and considered illegal to jiggle with in some countries, so, unless you are ready to take the heat, I advise you to not.
Phone reception plays a huge rule in the battery's backup duration, sometimes you can sleep with phone on 100% and wake up with ~60%. So maybe the carrier you are using has a really bad reception?
S7 tends to shutdown when phone's temperature is ~600°, and battery drains very very fast when phone is hot, maybe you have an issue with one of your motherboard components?
