Hello all!
I am using the Droid Ultra forum because I can't find or there doesn't seem to be one specifically for the Maxx. I assume they are they same phone but one just has a better battery.
I recently bought my new Droid Maxx using an upgrade. When it arrived, I tried using FoxFi for wifi tethering since LTE is faster than my house internet. I found out it won't work since I have the 4.4. To anybody that is curious, 4.4 came with my phone, I didn't use the OTA update.
After looking around on the internet, I am unable to find a guide that can root my phone. Has anybody made a bootstrap?
I am wondering if there is a way to root my phone with the 4.4 kitkat, whether 4.4 root method is still in development, or people have given up on trying to root it.
Something else. I tried to root my device with two programs, each have failed in the process. Kingo and OneClickRoot.
There is no working root for Android 4.4 on the Ultra/MAXX/Mini, you're stuck like everyone else.
There was "a Chinese guy" doing bootloader unlocks for ~$40 in the recent past few weeks but he/she/it has since stopped doing so (probably unable to access Motorola's database anymore or simply got caught doing it, who knows).
So again, you're stuck with stock 4.4 like everyone else is. The info is all over this subforum...

I've been thinking. I was reading the forums quite abit recently. The Chinese guy might of had access to the Motorola database with the IMEI or he might have developed a serial-cracker. I remember using keygens to unlock copies of Microsoft Office along time ago. This guy might have done the same but kept it for himself to make a profit. I am wondering if we might see a keygen that uses a person's IMIE.

So for the sake of getting a more informed is this piece of crap ultra worth keeping in the hope of a root solution in the near future, or is anybody really even working on one?
It's a good phone that could be great (not as great as the MAXX 'cause of that battery life and no wireless charging) - I would say don't hold your breath for an unlock for the bootloader or even root nowadays, it's getting way too tough to root and bootloaders are pretty much... well, locked up I suppose. I don't know of any devs that are seriously working on the Droid devices anymore, it's kind of a crapshoot if you find one I guess.
IF I had gotten either of them before that "Chinese guy" stopped providing the bootloader unlock codes I may have developed a different opinion, but I missed that window of opportunity and so I decided holding onto those phones wasn't feasible given my requirements.
As I said in another post, I did like the MAXX and Mini when I owned them recently, but the fact that I wanted a bit more capability meaning root access because I use some apps that require it as well as the option of potentially using some customized ROM or doing customization that might require something like the Xposed framework means you're dead in the water with the Ultra/MAXX/Mini.
I sold both, picked up a Samsung Galaxy Express for $80 and it's unlocked (for T-Mobile, did that in 2 minutes), rooted and of course running CyanogenMod 11 aka Android 4.4.2 without a single issue so far except the camera FCs often but that's a well known bug that persists and likely will always be problematic (except on those new CyanogenMod phones I suppose since they're designed to run that OS 100% without problems).
The Ultra, the MAXX, and the Mini are damned nice devices if you like "pure stock" and pretty much zero chance of them ever being anything else - the fact that they're GSM unlocked from the factory is a plus, so is the wireless charging for the MAXX and Mini, but that's about it for me and not enough to keep them for the long haul.

Thank you very much for an honest opinion. Fortunately I just signed on with Verizon and received this phone only a couple of days ago and have the option of retuning it and canceling the service with only a minimal restocking fee to deal with. I guess I will have to exercise that option because root access to the device is critical for use at work.

Exchange for a gs5. It has root. As does the HTC one m8. The m8 looks well built. And the dot view case is sweet.

I'm one of the fortunate people who still are grandfathered in with unlimited data from being bought up by Alltel. Today I just got a Droid Ultra as a warranty replacement. I'm seeing that they don't let you USB tether or Hotspot. On my RAZR I just rooted it and used SQLite Editor and turned the 1 to a 0 on the entitlement check. But rooting for this phone seems like a process. I've been a member since I got my HTC Hero (Alltel) forever ago (and still have it). Is rooting the Ultra worth it for me to void warranty. Because before you could just re-flash the phone with RSD Lite and they didn't know the difference. If it is a process I'd like to start contributing. I lost my job in June and have spare time on my hands to learn how to dev. on Android. I was in IT. Thoughts, suggestions, places to start ?

It must say 442 or below, in about phone. 444 & above have no path out of the box. If you take the OTA while root is hidden SunShine can work.
With moto reliable as of late, I would prefer warranty to root
On a side note I got the insurance company to give me a Droid MAXX instead of the Ultra. Downside is it downloaded and install 4.4.4 as soon as it activated. I need root for the usb tethering and hotspotting. I did try Sunshine but it failed because it wouldn't temp root. And from what I understand I'm S.O.L. until someone figures out a root for 4.4.4. Plus Motorola wouldn't let me unlock the bootloader. I'll keep checking the forum in hopes someone makes root possible. I have faith in XDA devs.:good:

I'm on latest 4.4.4, no root but able to use the built in mobile hotspot feature.
First, apologies if this is posted in the wrong section.
After finally deciding to root my Verizon Galaxy S6 Edge, it appears that there's no available safe method to do this. Am I correct, or have I not looked thoroughly enough?
I'm willing to take some risks, as I have already done one factory reset without much incident.

By the way your phrase your question, my guess is you are unfamiliar with the rooting process for verizon phones. Beware that even if a method comes available, they are not for the faint of heart. In particular, Samsungs have become extremely difficult to root in the past year or two. I have only had my s6 for about a week and I am going to return it, but my previous phone was an HTC one M7 and it was easy to root with simple exploits with a full bootloader unlock. To my knowledge, none of the samsungs on Verizon have had an actual bootloader unlock exploit released since the S3. I know that the Note 4 which was released 6 months ago still does not have a root method. The note 3 had a root method but still no way to unlock the bootloader. If you are not careful, you can trip the samsung "knox" security which immediately devalues your phone.
Basically, if there is ever a way to root this phone that is developed, it will likely take a long time. But it is not unlikely that it never happens at all.

The note 2 was the last one with a full boot unlock and root. But yeah its been a while lol

Okay, I know I don't post much in XDA, but I do read a LOT of threads!
The reason I am posting this is because I am wondering if anybody achieved root on this phone.
I have tried KingRoot, KingoRoot, OneClickRoot, none of those work.
It is running Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
I am about to screw around with ADB, see what I can do. I'll post back when I have got something.

I've tried every root method available without the PC and nothing. But, there maybe good news. In developers options there's a switch to unlock the bootloader. Now I'm no dev but I hope this makes cwm or tarp easy for devs to port and root.

1. I too saw that twitter SRSRoot business and tried it thinking, "Oh joy!" no, not working. Tried it every way you could (yes Kingo, KingRoot, vRoot, iRoot, FramaRoot, uRoot, & we-all_Root (the last two were jokes don't be so serious, nor was it a complete list of what I did actually try, ha!) too). I even wrote the people at SRSRoot telling them that it didn't work and have gone back to download their latest versions, still nada, zip, zero. FML on toast!
2. Cydia Impactor is not for Android devices, it is only for iOS. I went and double-checked just to make sure I wasn't trippin' thinking that maybe they have gone cross-platform. No, they have not.
3. I have the phone in question, I submitted a formal request on here in the best way I could find to get it added to the XDA devices list and I have been eagerly monitoring awaiting the day it happens. I was even considering trying to compile TWRP myself, but I just bought a different phone because I was tired of the headache. I couldn't figure out how to extract the zImage from it in order to give it a go (I think that's what it was). Anyways, I'm writing this before finishing reading the rest of the posts and may be rambling, but I had to respond. I have spent much time doing this. I ended up buying a different MetroPCS phone called the Samsung Galaxy On5 and was able to successfully root it and after much waiting finally got ahold of the Superstarz ROM that finally went out for that one. Just an FYI in case someone happens to see this before making the purchase. I will say that I feel like the ZTE Avid Trio Z833 has pretty good response time for such a cheap phone, then again they had a deal on it in the store, it looked to be more expensive at retail pricing. Anyhow, I digress, but felt the need to contribute rather than just lurk.
Oh, and another thing... The development option to OEM Unlock is "checkable", but as for actually booting to the bootloader it WILL NOT DO IT. The only way this is gonna happen to be rootable is if you use a custom recovery (which none exist yet) in a tar format and ODIN the friggin thing from download mode. So, there's your catch 22. If anyone knows how to extract the zImage and whatnot (without root obviously) I'd be more apt to give it a go and boot my happy bunghole into Linux and give compiling TWRP another go. I finally have had a lot of life stresses temporarily die down since I decided not to leave my current living situation and just stay with these irritating bastards another month at a higher rate. I should mention, however, that SRSRoot attempted to use it's "Exploit 8." So, I went digging into it's directories to see what the script was, but it was binary (and I didn't have reverse-engineering **** handy like PE-ID, and whatever else the kids are using in this newer age). So, I was like "wah-wah", but if any experienced ppl know more about the specific exploits that aren't ancient and actually working with Marshmallow that would be interesting to hear feedback about as well. Thanks. I really would like to use this second phone still, but right now I'm just using it as a Kodi/Megabox HD + AllCast Projector to watch streaming things without having to interrupt my working phone in the middle of it. It would also be cool to use as a straight VOIP phone with no cell service connected, but I've yet to find the free Google Voice VOIP loophole that is currently working. PM me if you know of these
P.P.S. I wrote another spicy post on hardr3set dot info about what crap I felt about their B.S. (weaksauce compared to anything legit which we all know you come to XDA for the meat-and-potatoes) because I was so tired of searching the Goog for root ZTE Avid Trio Z833 and having it be the top result over and over. Finally this has risen up. Thank you for starting this. Oh, and also, please... If you would kindly also request for this device to be added formally, maybe it would encourage development. Not sure how all that works, but yeah... power in numbers right?

Can not be done. This phone is an unfortunate accident by ZTE with numerous problems and they are not small issues but ones that affect the performance of the device. Replace that phone or your only adding to your daily stress.

following, bought one this morning hoping to have a cheap rootable phone.
I got mine from MetroPCS for $29. lol Yes, it's frustrating and has got problems (I've already put two of them through my dashboard and had to replace them, within the first 2 months, but it only cost 30buck so WTH. Anyways, I decided after I destroyed #2 that I was only going to use it for work and add no apps to it, except maybe GasBuddy and Winamp. Other than that, it's stock and I haven't had any real problems with it to speak of (problems aggravating enough to make me want to destroy it yet again).
So my suggestion to anyone who owns this phone, or is thinking about owning one: Don't install any more than a couple small apps, add a 32GB uSD card for music and other stuff, and use the thing as a phone and a media player only. The camera is pretty much worthless for quality photos, so there's really no other use for it. But it makes a great txting, voice calling, and music playing phone!
Of course, if you end up paying more than $30 for it, you probably paid too much. But it sure is a pretty nice phone for 30 buck!

I have ordered one of these phones for $20 should be here by Monday. When it arrives I'll be able to confirm if its bootloader is unlocked or not. In the meantime here is the firehose and support files (rawprogram0.xml and patch0.xml) as well as the MetroPCS B16 firmware to be flashed with QFIL or MiFlash. This will allow people to recover their device and hopefully if the bootloader isn't locked flash custom images.

I just bought a new unlocked Verizon G920V phone from eBay to use with my Verizon prepaid account. (Well actually the hardware version under About Phone lists it as G920V.07). I can't say for sure if Marshmallow or Nougat shipped on this phone but it's currently running Nougat. As soon as I got it and it connected to my home wifi it wanted to update so I decided (maybe like an idiot) to let it. It appeared to download a giant file and flash itself a new firmware. This leads me to believe that it maybe shipped with Marshmallow but it obviously now has Nougat on it.
FWIW, I've rooted my own phones and a couple of my wife's phones in the past, but I'm by no means an expert. I'm fairly technically inclined in other areas of technology, but when it came to rooting various phones it amounted to carefully researching (usually through this site) and simply following a set of steps. I've always been successful. Long story short, I'm kind-of confused as to whether or not I can root. Like I said, I'm a bit confused, but it would appear that not only is there no root for the S6 running Nougat, but I believe I read where someone mentioned that Verizon released a security patch that prevents any sort of downgrading. Right after getting cellular service transferred the phone wanted to do a security patch so I assume that I've now got that patch installed as well.
So, can I downgrade this phone and root? I don't care about marshmallow I'll go to version 5 (whatever wonky name that one is called) if I have to. I would really just like to get root on this phone. Mainly so I can block ads more effectively and try to milk more battery life out of this thing because the battery life is horrible in my opinion.
Also FWIW, the software build/baseband number is G920VVRS4DQE1 if that helps or matters.

It's been a few days and no replies, but from the additional information I've found since posting, I'm thinking that root ain't gonna happen. At this point I don't think it's even possible to roll back to an earlier version. Oh well I'll just live with this phone for awhile. I really like the phone despite not being able to get root. I suppose I'll just live with ads.
You can go to Samsung apps, if you have a Samsung account and download there ad block app. That is what I am using. It under Galaxy apps that came with phone

You actually can downgrade your firmware should you so desire. The following two threads have links to firmwares flashable via odin.

At this point I don't think you can downgrade any lower than the OK7 firmware.
