Quick intro to transcoding your media files to HE-AAC v2

In the AAS forums, I've been asked to elaborate on how HE-AAC v2 (eAAC+, HE-AAC2 etc.) files can be created. HE-AAC v2 is the latest and without doubt the BEST sound encoding technology (if you want to store HUGE amounts of songs using as little storage as possible). Audio files encoded with HE-AAC v2 at 48 kbps sound equally good as MP3's at 128+ kbps and Ogg Vorbis / WMA files at around 96 kbps.
As has already been explained in my related article, few Windows Mobile / Symbian / Palm OS players support the format, but their number is continuously increasing.
Probably the best and fastest way of converting files to the HE-AAC v2 is as follows:
1. Get the free (it’ll suffice – no need for the commercial, Pro one), Full version of WinAMP.
2. Mass-select the songs you’d like to convert in the upper right corner of the window (that is, the individual song list), right-click and go to Send To: / Format converter:

3. set the parameters as can be seen in the following screenshot:
Make sure you double-check you set “Channel mode” to Parametric Stereo so that version 2 of HE-AAC will be used, not just the plain version 1. Also, instead of 32 kbps, you might also want to go for 48 kbps for slightly increased sound quality. But no more: over 48 kbps, HE-AAC v2 will revert to v1 (Parametric Stereo won’t be used any more).
After this, you can easily start the mass-conversion by pressing OK. The results (.AAC files), by default, will be stored in the directory specified in the uppermost text input field. They can be directly played back by Music Player in newer N-series Nokias natively supporting the format (the N95, N81, N82 etc.), the free (!) TCPMP on Windows Mobile and Pocket Tunes on Palm OS.
Note that the above tutorial is about encoding standalone files. As far as transcoding live radio streams into HE-AAC v2 is concerned, I'll VERY soon (hopefully tomorrow) publish the Audio Stream Transcoding Bible, which will be a god-send for everyone that can't listen to certain radio stations on his/her handset and/or want to minimize data usage.

I dunno... I've experimented a lot with AAC v2 (HE-AAC) but imo ogg still sound better... the bass is more defined in AAC v2 at 48kbps but the rest doesn't sound really natural.
The middle frequencies sound much better in ogg and overall the music sound warmer and more natural even att the same kbps. I think one thing that really helps ogg vorbis in lower frequencies is the variable bitrate option. Without selecting variable bitrate the HE-AAC tune will sound better though...

In general, now that you can get storage for really cheap, I recommend AAC+v2 mostly for radio stream (trans)coding for GPRS or other, heavily bandwidth-constrained clients - at it, it's just unbeatable. I've directly compared it at 24...32 kbps to that of OGG - there is just no comparison.
This is why I've emphasized "only if you really need to save storage" in the article.

A. Please ensure you have all your folders with music actually checked in Poweramp Settings => Music Folders.
Your original Android Library is not changed, nor any files deleted.
Poweramp 2.0.1 has Auto-find option in Settings. This will import your Android library folders into Poweramp.
Poweramp library is a separate, completely independent library. When you installed Poweramp 2.0, it just got filled with the files scanned from your sd card/other flash memory, as specified in Music Folders. By default these are /music, /mp3 and Google music cache directory, or the Poweramp 1.4 previous music folders settings.
Q. Freeze/too slow folders/library scan
A. You have (semi)broken SD card. Please check your SD card for errors on computer or try another SD card.
Q. Where is Auto-advance Setting now in Poweramp 2.0
A. It’s merged with Repeat modes. Just keep pressing Repeat mode until Advance List.
Q. Volume too low. Volume changes weirdly. Other volume issues.
A. Try to disable Direct Volume Control in PowerAMP Settings => Audio Engine => Advanced Tweaks.
Poweramp 2.x uses Direct Volume Control by default on 2.3+ mid-to-high end devices. On stock ROMs this produces much better audio output. But many custom/buggy ROMs, while supporting DVC, can fail with it.
Q. Poweramp 2.0 widget becomes white/doesn’t work on phone reboot
A. This can happen if something blocks Poweramp from starting on reboot and updating the widget – task managers, auto-start tweaking. If you use such apps/tweaks, you may need to add Poweramp (or/and WidgetPack) to exceptions list.

Well, there are a lot of player modules on the Internet ... there were many candidates. Everyone has their drawbacks and at first I didn’t think of using ExoPlayer, but when I tried to use it, I realized that it is the best in playback quality and speed. Therefore, now it is used by default.
In the future, it is planned to introduce playback of torrent files. So I needed a module to play any video. It turned out to be VLC. At first it seemed very green and with bugs, but then it was possible to get rid of all the bugs and bring it to a stable state.
The application architecture is modular ... so I can add at least 100 different playback submodules.
All the benefits that were previously preserved. Along with the modules, new HLS, Dash streaming algorithms were added - which I do not welcome. They work without saving the file to disk.
The second ExoPlayer module plays content with improved quality. He literally does remastering on the fly. It improves the quality of audio and video, so it is used by default.
The free version 5.0 does not contain some fixes and codecs, and may contain bugs that are already fixed in the paid version.

This release completely redesigned the logic for storing data in the cache.
Now there are two kinds of files: integers and chunks. Chunks are cut whole files. Full chunks can be played in exactly the same way as a single file.
The speedometer showed a significant increase in recording speed if recorded in different files and multithreaded. Without this, you can forget about writing cache to external drives. Well, at least to files that are about large 5-10GB .. In this case, the speed increases already on files more than 200MB .. So this will be the default setting.
Finally, a new feature has appeared - file size comparison in the cache and on the network. Previously, there was a problem in that movies with HDVideobox had the same name, for example, “1080.mp4” and the file was played from the cache, even if the movie on the server was of a different size. Now, before downloading, the size is compared and if it does not match, then the local file \ chunks is overwritten.
Due to the new feature, you can now not overwrite files by their size, but overwrite the cache by its maximum size. Chunks, if not even downloaded completely, can be used and downloaded. For example, a 4k movie, accidentally turned on for 10 minutes and turned off, will weigh several gigabytes in the cache and this cache will be used during repeated playback.
On swipe to the right, a mechanism for joining chunks to a file appeared in the playlist. It is very convenient if you need to connect and send something. There is also an automatic connection function, but there are problems with it. It’s not possible to simply take and merge files in Android. Therefore, the player takes the first chunk and copies the other chunks into it. It turns out double-writing the file to disk. Whatever this is, you can uncheck the automatic file connection.
The player is smart - if there is one chunk, then it renames it into a finished file.
It is very interesting to observe the multi-threaded operation of the player by the size of chunks. There sometimes 5 files are written. Streams that download data - they also write to disk. So there are no more threads. They have become smarter.
The default settings for chunks are recommended. The default settings for new features for users updating the application are not being tightened yet. This is temporary. Therefore, you can configure or reset the application memory and get the "factory" settings.
