Dual SIM availability and pre-order options - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi all,
Since I am very interested in the DUAL sim version of the S7 edge, I tried to gain some insight into the availability and pre-order options. I have been struggling to find valid information as there's no / not much official communication around this topic. Using information on XDA and internet, these are my preliminary conclusion. The links to the sources are included at the bottom of this post. Special thanks to @NisseGurra and @spyderdreams.
Four DUAL sim models seem to exist, details below, one Snapdragon and three Exynos. Using information gathered and listed below you can match it to the frequencies used in your home country. My best guess for Europe is the Hong Kong model.

What I did figure out, is that Samsung seems to have the information on their country specific websites.

So does that mean that the dual sim phones will not have expandable memory (when used as dual sim)?
Here's a cooler picture:

That's right. So you have to choose out of two options, a) one sim + SD card or b) dual sim without extra storage. I've read somewhere that Samsung decided not to implement Marshmallow's storage feature which virtually merges the device storage with the SD card. Official reason for that is that they think most of their users will use the SD card for file transfer between devices. If you were to use the 6.0 feature that SD card becomes part of the system (I think). Source: ARS Technica.
PS. Thanks for the better picture!

So that means I will need the 64GB dual sim variant. Unfortunately that usually has the most delayed release. I will follow this thread closely.

Hi,

I already asked for more info regarding the second sim.

Here's page 18 from the S7 edge manual. Full explanation.

Got it. I saw the two designations on the holder and thought they'd figured out how to engineer that. Sucks if you care about dual sim.

It does suck. I'm actually re-considering how much I need the dual sim. I only use a second sim when roaming, which is less than 1 month/year in total. Might not be worth the extra wait, the extra cost, and the lack of expandable memory.

i navigated to the Canadian page ,
http://www.samsung.com/ca/consumer/mobile-devices/smartphones/galaxy-s/galaxy-s7/hardware/
it only shows a sim and sd card , guessing that means no dual sim option here ?

Any idea if the global variant supports dual SIM?

Please any one tell me wich version of s7 edge will have dual sim ? And may i get s7 edge with dual sim option in india ?

They all have the option of Dual Sim, you either use Sim holder for a Sim and SD Card combo or 2 Sim cards. There is no guarantee that they will be bringing a 64gb version.

Dual Sim
Now my question is that a Dual Sim Variant will not have a separate Micro SD card slot apart from entering two sims.
It will be either you put two sims or 1 sim and micro SD

[Q] Use your own carrier with Motorola Xoom?

If you bought the WiFi-Only version of the Motorola Xoom, can you use your own SIM card to get 3G/4G data working on another wireless carrier? I really wanted the 3G version, but I did not want to sign up for a contract with Verizon Wireless. Or is the hardware incapable of supporting a 3G/4G Upgrade on the WiFi-Only version?
The Verizon data contract was just ridiculous. They wanted 20 dollars a month for 1GB of data, then 20 dollars more for each GB. I barely use my Comcast internet at home and easily hit 50GB a month with it. I'd much rather get some "Pay As You Go" data plan from another company and use their SIM card. I am sure this is not possible, but I thought I would ask anyway.
Thanks Guys!
I am wondering the same thing. Could we install a 3g card like the att 881u in the pci slot?
Sent from my MB860 using Tapatalk
In theory it would be possible, but then you are looking at coding an entire framework and driver lib for what ever card you get installed, if the Wifi Only board even has a slot of anything.
But if you have just metric tons of extra time on your hands, it would be better spent trying to convince Google to give us source for HC.
So Hawk2k8 posted a guide on how to get the 3G Xoom to work on another carrier. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1016158
My question is, if we buy a Verizon 3G SIM card, can we use it on our WiFi only Xoom? What are the differences between the 3G version and the WiFi version? Can we activate 3G on our WiFi-Only version by flashing it with the 3G image?
Thanks!

There is no such thing as a VZW 3g sim card. VZW's 3g runs on CDMA Evdo, which doesn't use any sim cards.
I assume you're referring to the LTE sim card, which is for their 4g network?

The WiFi only model has no radio to support a 3G/4G connection. I'm not sure if the slot is still there on the WiFi model.
If it does exist, you would have to do quite a bit to get it working:
reflash the firmware to support the new radio
find/create a driver that supports the radio and works with the OS
program the radio to work with your carrier
tear apart the Xoom to insert the radio
As stated above, that's a ton of work to do in order to make this work.
...or just wait for the UMTS model (mz601/3) with the right frequency bands.

Actually Verizon DOES have 3g SIM cards. They use them in the MiFi devices. I have installed a number of the ZTE Fivespot devices for users where I work and I've actually opened them up and seen the SIMcard. The SIM in the MiFi is for the GSM/GPRS/EDGE connectivity.
This is the Verizon SIM card

That's not a VZW 3G SIM card (rather a Vodafone SIM card). Those are for when you're roaming on GSM networks in Europe or elsewhere they have roaming arrangements. All their dual mode CDMA/GSM phones and data devices have those Vodafone SIMs in them. Vodafone owns a majority of Verizon.
As far as running the xoom on another carrier, your pretty much limited to vzw or sprint in the USA. Its not GMS compatable......yet.

Mate 8 dual SIM question

For those who have it, is it possible on the dual sim version that when one SIM is on LTE voice/data, can SIM 2 have voice on 3G? I have 2 SIMs with the same company but the company doesn't have a 2G network only 3G/4G LTE.
In the scenario you've described, SIM2 will be on 2G only. The phone is dual sim, active standby.
No way.

Ok, thank you. It's unfortunate that there isn't a phone than can do this yet. I'm sure there are places that 2G has been decomissioned and/or the company never had 2G

In Japan there's no 2G (GSM). So even if I have two sims, I can only have one active at a time.
ouch, thats a bummer! so did they already deactivate gsm in japan or did they always have a different 2G standard?
at least u can stilk use the second slot for extra storage, altho i guess u dont really need it, sporting the 128gb model

I'm looking into CDMA as a potential option for a second SIM.
Japan used PDC(TDMA) for 2G, but there is a CDMA operator as well. So it's something I want to look into.

If you are using international version:
The Mate 8 supports FDD-LTE, TDD-LTE, WCDMA, TD-SCDMA, GSM, CDMA2000, and CDMA networks for global roaming. Simply insert two SIM cards into the 2-in-1 card slot, and then specify the primary SIM card that is used for 4G services. The secondary SIM card can be used for 2G services.
consumer.huawei.com/minisite/worldwide/mate8/connected.htm
consumer.huawei.com/cn/mobile-phones/mate8/perfomance.html
That's mean when the primary SIM card used 4G, the second SIM will use the 3G network. The Huawei hardware have some difference between international and chinese version.
so wait, let me get this straight: the chinese version actually supports 2G AND 3G on the second sim whereas the international version only sports 2G for the second sim? i like that

Yes, I double confirm from huawei taobao online customer service.
I recommend buy the china version hardware and use cyanogenmod rom for security reason. The mate 8 in china just 2999RMB.
well, for now i guess well have to wait and see if CM will ever come to the mate 8... the recent progress in bootloader unlock, TWRP flash and root is already a good start though

No, I have the chinese version and if the primary sim is in 4G mode, the second sim will be locked to 2G only. However, you can swap these around, ie, make SIM2 4G, but this puts SIM1 into 2G.
thanks for that info, even though its a bummer which rom version are you running atm? also, do u physically need to swap out the sim cards or can u just assign the primary and secondary position via software setting?
I help you to check the problem, this is result:

this chinese means (全網通) just this one hardware version can support 4G+3G, but just support the one company (电信). This company use CDMA2000(EVDO) 180, 181, 189, 133, 153.
ah well, at least theres a simple enough mod in order to be able to use both a microsd card AND two sim cards

But you can have only 1 4g active at the same time.
If ur sim 1 is active 4g, ur sim 2 can only be 2g.
If you choose sim 2 to be ur active 4g, ur sim 1 can only be on 2g.

Dual SIM in both S7 and S7 Edge by default?

Hi, I've seen the hybrid microSD + dualsim adaptor that may have the S7 by default, but only in certain countries.
I have currently an S6 Duos (regular version, I didn't find the Edge in dual sim).

are you sure? I was refering to Europe, as far as I see in EU it will be like this
The European and U.S. variants don't have dual sim; dual sim requires to use two baseband chips, which is adds an additional cost to the manufacturer, therefore you can guess Samsung will only implement it on markets with high demands for such products (China, India...)

They just use the same sim tray worldwide to minimise costs.
Because they use a hybrid SIM tray does not mean your handset supports more than one sim card.

If you assume the physical connectors for a second SIM is in the tray of the SIM/SD slot of all major versions.
But there was a discussion if only the Exynos version that aims at the Asian market will get also the connectors for the second SIM.
From experience Samsung often build a range of phones and sells them under the same model no. That leads to an uncertainty until the last minute.
In Hong Kong they usually first sell the regular international one (F) and after a while also the (mainland China targeting) Dual SIM version (D or whatever).
If physically a second SIM card is connected over the small tray... it still needs to be managed by the OS. I am curious to see if all versions of Samsungs OS will have that capability.

Well i guess dual sim only for exynos version..
Is it hardware or software related? I mean, in latter case, one could use a custom ROM in order to enable dual SIM compatibility.

Because of how the tray looks on the S7 people were hoping it's already ready to go for Dual SIM, but it isn't S7 manual explains there's a SIM tray that supports 1 SIM + 1 micro SD card, and then there's a SIM tray that supports 1 SIM + 1 SIM or micro SD card (meaning you either have two SIMs in or 1 SIM and 1 micro SD, can't use 3 of them at the same time). But as of right now Europe and US are getting the 1 SIM only phones, as of right now Dual SIM isn't available. Maybe if you dig you could find it on some Asian shop which is usually where they get Dual SIM phones, maybe India too?
I have a dual sim S7, other than having dual sim, what's the difference between dual sim and not dual sim S7?
Any update on this? I am about to buy an s7 edge but definitely not willing to shell out a ~100EUR more for the DUOS model. (I am in Europe, getting the Exynos version won't be a problem)
Dual sim card need full network band. This is only can be achieved by Qualcomm. Qualcomm has the patent of cdma standard
So dual sim need supported from Hardware .Exynos version often sells in Europe. So Samsung do not need to worry cdma or another standard. Europe use WCDMA.

NEW Honor 8 - does it has dual sim active?

Hello there is no subforum for NEW Honor 8 so I decided to write here. Do you know if Honor 8 has dual sim active like Honor 7 and Honor 6? I have read somewhere that Honor 8 has dual sim standby but not sure it is veryfied information?
It says on gsmarena; Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by)
But I guess it's not confirmed info also.
here is the original Chinese web side.
Please scroll down to the SIM pictures!
http://www.honor.cn/products/mobile-phones/honor8/
there you can see the Chinese version of honor 8 will have 2 sim card slots
hope our version will have it also.
I know that there si two SIM slots, but the question is is it dual sim ACTIVE or dual sim STANDBY? The same problem was with Honor 6 and Honor 7 - wchen I bought them there was no confirmed information about dual sim ACTIVE - finally both Honor 6 and Honor 7 has got dual sim ACTIVE, so I hope Honor 8 also has got it

i do not believe that because HONOR is the cheep line of HUAWEI. I don’t think they build in two full modems for it. It would be the same as Honor 7.
One SIM for data transfer and one for talking. Hope you will understand my bad explanation.
I have both Honor 6 and Honor 7. Both have dual sim active for data and for colling. I use SIM1 with privat phone number and SIM2 with company number. In the same time I can coll from SIM1 and for example pick up the calling on SIM2. I can coll from SIM1 to SIM2 and it works. It means it is full dual sim active (two independent SIM cards for using in the same time)

It means it is full dual sim active (two independent SIM cards for using in the same time)

try to use 2 x UMTS or 2 x LTE at the same time! I think to know that this doesn`t work.
Hi,
I also have a Huawei Honor 7 (chinese version PLK-TL01H) and i can confirm mine is NOT Dual Sim Active !
If I'm on a call with SIM1, DATA on sim2 doesn't work. So i think it is also linked to which provider you have and which frequency is used for which use.
Kind regards,
From the release key note that I attended, I did not see nor heard anything about it being dual active. But I can always double check with some others to confirm.
I will tweet Honor USA about it.
I have the US version of the Honor 8 and it doesn't seem to be dual SIM.
The SIM holder looks like this

I think it is only dual-sim standby.

typically on Huawei phones the SD card slot is the second SIM slot (you can't use both). the SIM would be oriented 90 degrees from the SD card, parallel to the first.
i played with an Honor 8 after the launch and thought i remembered seeing dual sim options, but that may have been my Huawei phone,
i have someone who sells here in my country.. ill ask him on his facebook page..

I've reached honor on facebook, not dual sim active, only standby
It says on gsmarena; Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by)
The Honor 8 is a SINGLE SIM and not DUAL sim. This device only works with GSM carrier (ie: AT&T and T-Mobile). Sorry for the confusion. (NS)
For your info Honor 8 for USA market is a single sim, European and China, device's are dual sim.. Active or stand by, well that depends..
It's standby
My Honor 8 (FRD-L09) is a dual SIM active!
I'm able to call from one SIM to the second one. Talk is not possible of course, but the call is ringing on the second SIM! European version, bought in czech.

Verizon and 8T?

Anyone able to get this device activated on Verizon?
I am currently on the 6T and activated via Verizon, with CDMA less features fine. However, when I try to activate this phone online, I am unable to. I called Verizon to see if they have any ideas, and they said the phone isn't supported on the Verizon network, even though I know it does. I even asked them to do a CDMA less provision with no solutions.
My 8T and my wife's 8T are working just fine on Verizon. We came from the pixel 3. Required me calling them and doing the CDMA-less provision.
No native Wi-Fi calling or native video calling (which is fine, never used it anyway, always signal).
I don't live in an area with 5G, so can't speak on that.
I'm bumping this thread....
I have tired numerous times to activate this on Verizon. I am coming from the OnePlus 6T, and it works flawlessly for the last 2 years. At first I tried to activate online, and then tired call to activate.... None of the representative can activate it for some reason.
One rep said that as long as it's activated, then I can just put in the Verizon Sim and it should work.... but mine doesn't....
Do you guys think it's the SIM? I am hearing that there's a normal 4gLTE sim vs the 5G sim.... But when I popped the SIM back into the 6T, it works again....

Why do you need to activate it? Just put the sim from your 6T in and it should work fine. I had a 6T, then a 7T and now the 8T. No issues at all.
Put the sim in and reset the network settings. I used a five+ year old sim out of a Pixel XL and Moto phone before that. I messed with it a bunch to get low band 5G working and ended messing something up and having no service. Net reset in the phone fixed it. I didn't have to call in for CDMA-less. sms worked without it. It doesn't seem to use 5G even though it supports band 66 (which is my connection where I'm at), I enabled 5G manually and VZW turned on NSA band 66 recently. Typical VZW. Supposedly there is a 5G sim. I don't have one.
I'm getting 5g on visible, same speed as 4g

Yes you will need a 5G sim and call them to do the CDMA-less if not getting text. The first tech support guy could not do it (CDMA less). He had to transfer to level 2 tech (CDMA less). For the sim card, i bought a Note 20 ultra 5g and they require it. So just do it and see how it goes.

Do you know if you have a 5G sim, ie is it a new one in your 8T?

Looks like a regular visible sim card to me.
Nationwide 5G uses band n2 on the old band 2 cdma frequency. If you have signal you should have service if everything is correct. Our 8t is only connecting on band 66 using 4g.
Looks like Verizon is issuing Gemalto Virtual 4G 5G Interim SIM cards with 5G phones. I'm going to try to get one and test with the 8T.

How would I get this and/or ask for it. I already have a 5g sim card. Not sure if it's the one you stated.
It probably is the same one. So Verizon, OnePlus 8T, 5G plan and 5G sim? Do you get 5G service indicator? In the network settings is there an option for 5G or NR?
How do I know if I have a 5g sim? I just activated yesterday and got a new sim from Verizon.

There is no 5g sim. 5g won't work on Verizon. The phone is not supported for 5g on Verizon. But 4g/LTE works fine.
There is a 5g sim. Verizon support says there's one. An iPhone 12 we ordered on our account had one listed with the order. Yes the phone isn't officially supported but it doesn't mean it won't work for sure.
