stupid noob question, why is my bootloader locked? - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, couldn't find an answer to my question.
why is my bootloader locked on my z5 while other people can unlock theirs?
is it to do with network branding or something??
cheers

Yup you pay monthly so you get a phone at a discount usually free. You then don't own the phone. Some networks like mine don't allow modified software on their networks so Sony lock the bootloaders as part of their contract

To be clearer, everyone's bootloader comes locked out of the box. The difference is that some are unlockable and some are not. Is this what you mean? Just because yours is locked doesn't mean it can't be unlocked.

when testing it says it cannot be unlocked, even if i turn oem unlock on, it still says it cannot be unlocked.

Sony lock the bootloader to protect drm keys which are the security keys for there media apps and software like bionz track id x-reality clearphase ect which are lost when you unlock the bootloader. A branded device (network locked) has an extra lock for the network carrier to protect the sim lock certificate that is why thpse device cannot be unlocked. FYI a quick Google search would have told you this.

why do we have XDA forums, if a "quick" google search is the versatile answer? no offence, but beginners and people who arent into programming mostly dont know all those special terms and their relations etc... im interferring here because your answer isnt pretty clear, at least to me. i bought a branded (vodafone) z5, no simlock though, and according to service menu the bootloader is locked but able to unlock.
meanwhile i unbranded it using flashtool. but when excactly is a bootloader unlockable? when it comes to branded AND simlock?

Bootloader unlocking has nothing to do with sim lock, unbranding or anything else. As said all Sony bootloaders are locked the ability to unlock depends on the service provider and Sony's contract with them. They want the providers to accept their phones on their network so if the service provider wants to limit the use then Sony will do that at factory level.

So if I get EE to unlock my phone, does that mean I can then unlock the bootloader? And yes I have used Google

Rogers Unlocking Help Requested

Hi there,
I recently bought a cheap Rogers HTC One X in mint condition off my local classifieds ($300). It is locked to Rogers and I need to use it on Telus. What is the best way to unlock it? Is there any way to unlock it for free? I am not experienced at all with Android, I'm coming from an iPhone but would really like to get this working because I'd love to get rid of it and just use my One X.
Please help
No free options yet. You would have to buy an unlock code online

Or you could just go.to the carriers store ans get it unlocked. Tell then you have family over seas and you're buying it as a birthday present. Most of the carriers will unlock it for free.

Actually after an amount of time with good standing they are these days.
Though one like Telus charges 50, so its not worth it versus a few bucks online.

Will using an unlock code permanently unlock the phone? Also, will the unlock be removed by changing ROMs, unlocking the bootloader, etc? Is the unlock code a one-time use kind of thing? How do they even get these unlock codes?

Unlocking your phone unlocks the branding on your phone. Like if you have AT&T and you put as T-Mobile SIM card in, it won't work. If it was unlocked and you did that, it would work.
If you changed your Rom, no. Each phone has their own imei number, therefore it only has one unlock code. As for it being a one time use, no. And if you unlocked your bootloader, no.
The unlock code will perm unlock your phone so you can use it internationally and with different carriers as long as they use SIM cards(and if that card fits in your phone).

Thanks everyone for the replies so far, I really appreciate it! :good: I have only a few last questions before my problem is resolved:
1.) Where is the best place/website to get an unlock code from (in terms of price, success, etc) ?
2.) How do I enter in the unlock code into my phone?

If I can change my imei will it let me unlock to other networks other than orange? I.e change my imei to my old mobile which had all networks unlocked.

No we cannot.
Well there is an illegal way but you need a really goot tech skills. You have to change some chip in the phone and reprogram it.
I know I can change my imei illegally to another mobile. I known where to get it done, my question is tho, if I do, will it reactivate my trys to unlock the network

No, because it's not the networks blocking the IMEI, it's the phone blocking other SIM cards; only removing the SIM lock (which takes effect regardless of what IMEI is set) will work.

so in other words. to now get it off orange, i will have to pay there 20 quid to get it unlocked from there networks since my status is: [0] network 0
while im here, why is it that som st21i models can get there bootloader unlocked and some cannot?
It depends on sony whether to give us unlock allowed: yes or no. I bought the phone from small phone seller here (not by network company) so I got unlock: yes phone.
Now using:
Sony Xperia tipo ST21i
stock 4.0.4
11.0.A.4.22
(rooted, locked bootloader)
Current problem:
Cant get past installing flash drivers in xp.

Yes; you don't necessarily have to get it unlocked by the network operator, but to my knowledge there aren't any free ways of doing it.

Actually it's up to the network operator. Operators selling devices on contract usually have them locked. Retail devices aren't.

So in theory I can ask my network operator to allow me to unlock my bootloader. And my sim lock. For a fee ofcourse
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire2 using xda app-developers app
I don't think they'd unlock the boot loader; I'm not sure, but there might not even be an easy to use method to allow a customer to unlock it. Having a customer remove the SIM lock is rather simple because it only requires the operator to supply the customer with the (device-specific) unlock code (and no, there are no "universal" codes or ones you can generate yourself).
If you're still bound by a contract getting it unlocked through the operator is probably not going to be worth it because they'll want you to pay off the remaining fee (which is going to be more expensive than the third-party services offering unlock codes).

[Q] Need Quick Answer Sim Unlock

I am about to buy an unwanted contract upgrade Z3 but it is locked to another network. If I unlock it would this mean the bootloader is unlocked or not?
I do not want to loose the DRM protected camera features and the sellers network is refusing to give him the unlock code until he has had the phone for 6 (!) months.
The SIM unlock code will not touch the bootloader so your DRM keys will still be intact.

And using one of the paid unlock code services online is possible with the Z3?
I was under the impression that newer phones could not be unlocked this way and had to be rooted.
Root has nothing to do with SIM lock.
Usually the code works the same way whether it is obtained from the operator or a separate online service. However there is normally a delay from when the device is released and when unlock codes from online services become available. So I cannot say if they have them available for the Z3 yet.
As long as you use one of the reputable online services you should be fine as they will only advertise it if it is available.

You can use SIM unlock codes on network locked phones straight from the shop - so no rooting or anything needs to be involved. You just insert a different SIM, then an option should come up to insert the SIM unlock code.
It gets more difficult to find exploits for rooting newer phones without unlocking the bootloader. But that is a separate issue.
Hope that helps.
You are confusing two different things.
If your phone is SIM locked, you'll only be able to use it under whatever company's network it is locked to. It doesn't make a difference whether it's rooted or not or whether the bootloader is unlocked or not.
You can probably unlock the SIM lock through a paid service (IMEI unlocking) although with newer phones is a little harder to find a service that will do it.
Look at several unlocking services (there are many online) to see if they can unlock that phone before you make the purchase.
Brilliant. Thanks for the help!
Anyone care to recommend a good online service to use?
The carrier will do it for free usually. Find someone who currently has a subscription
They said it would be 21 days before they would release the code for some reason. I've used a paid online service although even they ae saying 7 days.

Real delivery time for Sony codes from 3rd party service is 3-7 days. These 3rd party unlock codes come from manufacturer (Sony) and they support all Sony models. No matter if the model is just released etc. If you are using good supplier with history and your phone has at least 2 attempts left to type unlock code (is not hard locked) it's very safe process. Good luck.
Not asking for code
I have a brand new Z3 locked to T-Mobile.
When I insert my own sim, it does'nt ask for unlock code. It also says at the top of the notification bar that the phone is network locked and I can only make emergency calls.
Can you please help me on how to get the phone to ask for an unlock code so that I can enter one and unlock the phone.
Thank you.
Device unlock apk.
Do you have that in your app drawer?.
If you don't go look in the mods n apps section I just posted a link to the app you need. There is no way to make the t-mobile D6616 ask for an unlock code. At least no way I found. T-mobile r jerks.

Help with Sony Z5 - WIND

Hey forumers I'm a little new here so sorry if this is a huge noob question
Yesterday I bought a Sony Z5 outright from a local provider here in Canada and I had gotten it unlocked and such but it doesn't seem like I'm able to find my local WIND network.. after some research i found that this phone might not be compatible at all
I had gotten a couple hints that maybe if I root I can unlock the band or something... I don't know.. if anyone knows what I can do please let me know.. I rather like this phone aha
TLDR/ Looking for a way to get Sony Z5 Compatible with WIND
If you already unlocked the sim and it doesn't work then it doesn't work. Should have checked the network bands before purchasing. If you don't know you can ask one of the wind representative. Also, if I remember correctly you might need root or worst you need to unlock the bootloader (which you can't because it is from bell), to unlock the other bands. All I know is that unlocking bands require alot of coding and complicated procedures. Gl bud, return it if you can if it doesn't work out.

Is there a reason why BELL cannot unlock the bootloader? I've been doing a lot of research since I posted this thread (im becoming obsessed even as a noob) and I'll need to root the phone, install custom kernel/ROM and edit 6 values into the non volatile memory in order to gain access to add additional bands. The Chipset in the Z5 should in theory allow AWS bands..
Make sure your APN is correct before going through all that trouble. Unlocking bootloader on Sony phones renders some special features useless.

I have triple checked the APN settings to be perfectly compatible with WIND and that is not the issue.
So pretty much either i lose out on features in order to root - unlock the radios
or I return it and somehow get the Z5 DUAL.
I really love this phone and can't think of any others to get if I return it and don't go for the dual lol.

As far as I know, here in Canada when ever you get a phone from a carrier the bootloader is locked forever. Blame the carriers not sony. And from my years in XDA - sony in particular I don't think I have met a developer skilled enough to get the bootloader unlocked on non unlockable devices, maybe Samsung devices yea but not sony.
Installing custom roms and kernels would require you to unlock the bootloader which you can't do so with carrier phones. This is the down side when you get carrier phones. Always get international phones because they are not locked forever.
I have the international version so I don't know about the bell one. Go to dial pad and input *#*#service#*#*
From there navigate to service info / configuration. Under rooting status, if it states "yes" next to bootloader unlock allowed then you can unlock it if it states "no" then it means no

I went through the directions and the bootloader says no. Looks like I'm heading to return it later today as I'm not interested in losing out on features if I was to root etc...
dang, I feel like I was so close to, but after reading on everything for a few hours, I must hang up the towel. I will probably try and buy the Sony Z5 Dual in green now from Ebay (the color I wanted anyways)
Thanks everyone for the assistance even though we came up short!

No worries, at least its not too late to return it. You can still root the device but just can't unlock the bootloader.
Just curious, how much did you pay in total for the phone outright?

$649.99 + tax so $734.48 which I totally didn't mind, I was due for an upgrade and was able to sell off my previous phone...
I'm looking into the Z5 Dual and it's showing me $854 for it... on ebay at least http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Sony-Xperia-...903367?hash=item419df43c47:g:86QAAOSwo0JWF52C

That sucks, sorry you are having difficulty. As an FYI, I made multiple edits on a coupe Xiaomi Qualcomm devices with a NV editor and the changes stuck but it never enabled any additional bands. I see that neither model on the Z5 Compact is compatible with Wind on any band by plugging in values here:
