you are amazing.
wow, that was easy!
jrkuse what would we do without you !?
didn't realize changing the rom didn't affect the apps already installed?
what's the best rom to run? so many to choose from!
I updated with the zip and had to flash the bok3 kernel to get it to reboot.
I was lucky after waiting for the "reboot", the screen went blank for several minutes at this time I pressed the power button and was brought back to ss splash screen which is how I got back to recovery to flash kernel. Not sure what happen. I think it flashed OE1 ss kernel, before I tried the bok3.

When you flash it for the first time in recovery you still have to flash the kernel to boot back to rom then once you do that it will work. If it doesnt work you need to open install safestrap and manually install it
Thinking about flashing this but had a question. Is there a way to flash a different kernel than the bok3 kernel since it automatically flashes this kernel upon exiting safestrap? That's the only thing holding me back right now. Thanks for this.

Why you should be running bok3 firmware for everything
Easy peasy.
Thank you for this. Nearly 24 months since this phone's release, and we still have development. Not bad for a "locked down" device.

Its not a big deal, MOAR doesn't seem to be the best with BOK and I was considering going back to BOG5, but I'll probably stick with it and flash this. Thanks for the reply.
Related
1. Take the NJ4 OTA update.
2. Download and install Towelroot-v3.apk(this version does not require internet access).
3. Place your phone into "Download Mode" (press and hold the "Home", "Volume Down", and "Power" keys until the phone powers on and displays warning screen, then press "Volume Up" key) and flash the I337_NC1_Stock_Kernel using Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
4. Open the Towelroot app from your app drawer and press "Make it Rain" to root your device.
5. Power off then boot into "Download Mode" again and flash the I337_NJ4_Stock_Kernel also in Odin's PDA slot(AP in Odin v3.09+).
6. Install SuperSU to manage root access. Done!
Troubleshooting:
1. Should the NJ4 ota update fail consider flashing back to stock NB1 using either file in this thread: I337UCUFNB1 4.4 Stock Odin Tars, then take the NJ4 ota update. Or, place the I337_NB1_to_NJ4_OTA_Update.zip onto your ext-sdcard and sideload from stock recovery. Once updated to NJ4 continue from Step 2 above.
2. When flashing the kernels the most common cause of an Odin flash failure is a faulty usb port or cable. Please check before reporting a failure!
Notes:
1. After flashing the NC1 kernel your phone may run a little wonky, e.g. extreme lag, no wifi, etc., and towelroot may not root on the first try. If that happens reboot and try towelroot once again. Once rooted and after flashing the NJ4 kernel your phone will again run like a champ!
2. Neither User Data nor knox warranty flag will be affected by following the above process.
3. For a great Noob FAQ see this Post thanks to @gonenorsk!
Alternative Safestrap Method (Updated 3/29/2015 - Odin no longer required):
1. Place the I337UCUFNJ4_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM onto your ext-sdcard.
2. From Safestrap recovery press "Backup" and backup your User Data.
3. Once complete, from the main menu press "Wipe" then "Advanced Wipe" and wipe everything but your ext-sdcard.
4. From the main menu press "Install," then select and install the I337UCUFNJ4_100%_Stock_Rooted_ROM.
5. Once complete, press "Restore" and restore your User Data.
6. From the main menu press "Reboot," then "System." Done!
Notes:
1. The above process will not affect your User Data or knox warranty flag.
2. This process will update your Modem, Non-hlos, System, Kernel, Stock Recovery, and Bootloader to NJ4 (BusyBox is also pre-installed).
3. The User Data "Backup" and "Restore" steps in the above instructions are not mandatory but will greatly reduce your device's set-up time. All currently installed non-system apps and settings will be automatically restored.

Hey guys just wanted to clarify my situation. When flashing the stock rom, wifi works with no issues. However when I installed a custom rom the wifi is not working. Thats why I was hoping someone had the modules so I could flash after installing the custom rom. Thanks again!

Thanks for your hard work @muniz_ri.
FYI - Your regular root instructions worked fine for rooting and installing safestrap. After Odin'ing back the NJ4 kernel, I saw the "force close" you were talking about when you try and launch the safestrap app, but the safestrap menu is still there on reboot.
This is the first of many guides I will be posting and keeping up with.
It will be utilized for Q&A FAQ and HOW TO so we can keep the development thread for development purposes.
Post your questions and Myself or other knowledgeable users of Sac23 ROMS will answer as quickly as possible.
So ......
For starters HOW TO INSTALL a ROM by SAC23
PRE REQUISITE ... YOU MUST BE ON THE 5.0 BOOTLOADER TO RUN THIS ROM
If you need to flash back to a previous stock bootloader
Mini-bootloaders - TWRP or Philz recovery already embedded:
Firmware_Only_Odin_Flashable_ Images_For_4.4.. And_5.0_Roms
Full bootloaders:
4.4.4 - G900PVPU1ANK4_G900PSPT1ANK4_SPR.zip
4.4.2 - [LINK][ROM][ODIN][TAR]SM-G900P NE5 (NE5 Modem/Kernel/ROM - Stock)
Installing with TWRP (View All Supported Devices>>> Find TWRP for your device):
Philz can be used and I will post instructions for it later
This assumes that you ALREADY have TWRP Recovery installed on your phone and you know how to use it.
TWRP Recovery by Ktoonsez: 01.13.2015: http://goo.gl/LgBsuk
Download the ROM of choice...move it onto the EXT SD CARD.
VERY IMPORTANT>>> Move all music, pics, important data from internal storage to the ext SD card and/or to your pc, etc. because during this process, the internal will be completely erased.
Recommended Method to Flash SACS Custom ROMS using TWRP
Boot into TWRP
Select Wipe > Advanced Wipe
Select Dalvik, System, Data, Internal Storage, and Cache. Swipe to Wipe (do this THREE TIMES)
Go back to previous Advanced Wipe screen.
Select Format Data, Type YES, Press GO. (do this THREE TIMES)
Go back to previous Advanced Wipe screen.
Swipe to Factory Reset. (do this THREE TIMES)
Go back to MAIN menu and STOP HERE !!!!! READ NEXT STEP CAREFULLY....
[*]Select REBOOT INTO RECOVERY mode and Swipe to Install Super User. DO NOT REBOOT INTO SYSTEM!
[*]AFTER THE PHONE REBOOTS INTO RECOVERY:
NOW proceed with installing The ROM
Select Install Zip, Drill down to Sac23's Rom you want to flash, and Swipe to install.
Follow on screen instructions (if there are any).
When prompted, REBOOT SYSTEM.
THE FIRST BOOT WILL TAKE A MINIMUM OF 20 MINUTES..... SOME DEVICES EVEN LONGER...
.
.
HAVE PATIENTS
When the Home Screen appears and it is obvious that the install has completed, allow the phone to settle for another 10 minutes BEFORE you begin setting up your personal preferences and accounts.
If everything seems normal, set your phone up and profit.
After setting up your personal info and you are now ready, the first thing you should always do after flashing any ROM is to go to settings, system updates, and refresh/update your PRL & PROFILE then reboot the phone. Second thing is go to settings, more networks, mobile networks, network mode, and select LTE/CDMA.

EDIT: 11/01/2015...This root method will work for OGD...OI6...OJ6... TRIED TESTED AND PROVEN ! ! !
WARNING: Once you USE THIS OI6 TAR OR take the OI6 OTA UPDATE . . . .
You will NOT be able to revert back down to OGD
EDIT: 11/01/2015...If you take OJ6 OTA Update, YOU CAN USE OI6 TAR FILE TO REVERT BACK TO OI6 / STOCK
With this TAR, you will be able to ODIN back to 100% FULL SPRINT STOCK. in the event you develop bootloops or just want to unroot
ROOTING will trip knox and tripping knox WILL kill Samsung pay FOREVER...even if you flash back the stock tar
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS TO YOU PHONE. ... IT IS YOUR DECISION TO TAKE THE PLUNGE.
Anyone that tries this and gets bootloops and cannot recover here is a link to the OI6 stock tar file... flash in Odin AP slot from download mode you should recover very easily DOWNLOAD THE SPRINT N920P OI6 STOCK TARBALL HERE TO RECOVER AND/OR TO RETURN TO OI6 STOCK
WORD OF WARNING>>> AGAIN Once you take the update to OI6 or use the OI6 TAR (get OI6 HERE ) .. YOU CAN NOT GO BACK TO OGD.....

Download ODIN 3.10.7
Download FREEZA's BEASTMODE KERNEL HERE
Download TWRP-2.8.7.0-N920P.tar
Download BETA-SuperSU-v2.49.zip
PREP THE PHONE FIRST ...
go to settings>>>about device>>> scroll to bottom and build number 8 times
now press back button once and tap developer options...
make sure USB debugging is on AND OEM UNLOCK NEEDS TO BE ON ALSO .....

Place phone in ODIN / Download mode ( press and hold vol down+home+power for a few seconds...then release and press vol up)
plug the phone to the pc....Watch for ID:COM in top left corner to give an ID.......if none is given then check the data cable or try a different one.... NOTE: once you try a flash and "IF" it fails... you will need to disconnect and power off the phone ( to power off press and hold Vol down + power for 10 sec ) and go back into download mode again or you will get "Setup Connection" hangup error when re-trying to flash
Now Click the "AP" button and in the pop up window, migrate to the KERNEL and double click it. Wait for it to verify md5 checksum. If bad, re-download the file.
Now check in the OPTIONS TAB.... make sure ONLY Auto Reboot & F. Reset Time are checked...
uncheck Re-Partition ! ! !
Once these steps are followed, click start and wait till you see PASS in the ID:COM Field
After re-boot, follow same steps and flash TWRP
Then either install SuperSU in TWRP by going into recovery by powering off the phone then press and hold vol up+home+power until you see the TWRP splash .... or just install from the market( the market install "may" give update binaries issues... flash in TWRP )

• BACKUP YOUR CURRENT SETUP WITH TWRP
• Do a FULL wipe but do not reboot yet
A full wipe includes:
Dalvik Cache
System
Data
Cache
• Flash rom and reboot.
Going back to the Stock Rom
• Use the same Odin instructions to flash TWRP above but using the stock tar

nice bro, thanks. a lot of people have been waiting for this!
Is there by chance a flashable zip that doesn't affect the bootloader so you can go back to ogd if you want? I know in the past it has been done before, not sure what it takes to accomplish this. Thanks for all your hard work.
Thank you sooooo much, but this definitely should not be in the general section for sure. A mod needs to move this to its proper place, this is a lifesaver.
So I got a replacement Note 5. I updated to OJ6 and then followed this tutorial to root. I managed to get root and installed twrp. However, try to flash certain zips in twrp the phone just reboots. This only happens with certain zip files like xposed installer and the volume mod zip. The interesting thing is these zips flashed fine on my old Note 5.
Anyone have any ideas?
Edit: Nevermind, I reflashed stock via odin and went through update and root again. NOw it seems like it's working.
Can I flash twrp first and then flash the kernel zip? Because when I try to flash the kernel through Odin it gets stuck before it even starts.

using twrp recovery
I have the edge + .....can I revert back to oi6 as well? Sorry I'm new at all this! Lol thank you
So, I was a master at rooting/manipulating my phone, but as it was a Note 2 until yesterday, I'm a bit rusty.
My son and I both got new Note 5s yesterday (a 32G and a 64G) and they've got OJ6 on them. I'm not completely sure I understand the instructions in post 1 - do I have to take the phone back to OI6 to be able to root using this method? Is there no root exploit for OJ6?
If I do have to revert, could you post clearly how to do it, please? Once I get past that I should be okay...
I have all these things I want to get done on the new one (getting rid of all the Sprint apps, backing up my messages, moving some program data over, more...) but realized everything I know about manipulating a cell phone is in Root, so I have to do it...
Thanks, in advance, for the help!!!

Yes, you can root OJ6 the same exact way as all the current builds.
I'm sure you're familiar with Odin by now so just download the OI6 factory tar (there isn't one available for OJ6 so far, its only available as an OTA update) and have that handy should you wish or need to go back to stock.
Also, if you see the OGD tar, don't bother with that one, you wont be able to flash that factory tar anyway as it will fail checks in odin when it recognizes you're on a newer build.
Additionally:
Since you're going to trip knox anyway by flashing TWRP custom recovery, you might want to keep in mind about wiping your internal storage too if you're having any issues along the way. It probably doesn't apply quite yet for you at this point but you know how it collects tons of extra stuff the longer you run android. There are a couple of deodexed stock builds and a custom rom too should you want additional features not available on stock.
All seemed to go well, BUT
When I boot, in tiny red type at top left, I get a "KERNEL IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING", or if booting into recovery "RECOVERY IS NOT SEANDROID ENFORCING".
What is that, and how do I fix it?
[EDIT] - I also just tried flashing the 1.2 version of the kernel and am still getting those messages...HELP...

It shouldn't be like that, but that's how it is right now. I'm not sure if there's any fix available, but I guess an updated version of the recovery will be released soon, that has this problem fixed..

Same here. Tested and working. I am on Mokee rom now.
Thanks for the guide but I found something wierd happening. After succesfully flashing twrp and rebooting it goes in twrp when I restart after that and try to go in recovery with volume up +power it takes me to stock recovery? Any ideas??:/
So version 3 works without any touch problems?

I'm using the v3 linked in this thread and the touch problem still exists. I have to wait 2-3 minutes before it works.
I tested the 2.8.7.0 version from miui.com and touch screen worked immediately. I'm not sure if it was just lucky or not, because I only tested it once. Maybe worth trying it and see how it works?
It'd weird because the one I have some times freezes and some times doesn't

Just reflash TWRP then reboot to TWRP, it should ask you if you want to either use it as read only or allow modification, select allow modification. Hope that helps.

Yup, this version of TWRP 2.8.7.0 should be fine with touch problems, this one i'm using now.
I was rooted on 9.5.4 with the Patched Boot Image. I had 2 modules enabled in magisk (call recording and substratum). Wanted to update to 9.5.5 and did this:
1. Download and install update
2. No reboot
3. Open Magisk and disable the modules
4. Select Install install and then Install to Inactive Slot (After OTA)
5. Rebooted
6. Phone booted so I opened magisk and enabled my modules
7. Rebooted
Now the phone doesn't boot up properly. It goes all the way to first screen asking for my passcode and then turns off and does to stock recovery. Please someone tell me what to do so I don't lose my data!!
Install TWRP, install stock image.

If I was I would turn a lot of people to ash...
But as for my phone since I was offline the world for 3 hours and got no answers I decided to try to flash stock boot.img
After flashing it in fastboot phone booted up normally and I have everything. Now I'm on 9.5.5 and want to root the phone... Should I go with the TWRP method? I was thinking to delay to flash TWRP since it isn't stable yet. If I open Magisk in phone and select install and then again install and then select option "Select and patch a file" and select boot.img, will it work?

The TWRP version is stable enough for use just now. I would flash the rooted boot image (You will lose wifi if you're on 9.5.5) and then flash TWRP installer along with flashing magisk again, then download one of the kernels provided (I'm using ElementalX on 9.5.5 and it's working fine) and flash that in TWRP, then you should have TWRP, root and working wifi, etc.

When you say rooted boot.img...What do you mean? I took the stock boot.img, put in phone memory and selected in magisk. Magisk made a new boot.img and flashed that. After that phone didn't boot up like before and went to recovery mode. So to fix it I flashed again stock boot.img
I updated the same way as you (didn't disable my Magisk modules though). Everything went OK, kept root, but something borked in my /system folder and now can't make any changes in it (buildprop, hosts).
I'm not installing any unofficial TWRP, going to reflash the patched boot.img again to see if that works. If not, will go for a clean install. Worth a try?

Rooted boot image : https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-7-pro/how-to/guide-root-oneplus-7-pro-patched-boot-t3931205
Follow that guide but, as I said, your rom is a later version so your wifi will break until you flash a compatible kernel, I'm using ElementalX with 9.5.5 and it's fine.
You would be best installing TWRP as soon as you can from here : https://forum.xda-developers.com/on...nt/recovery-unofficial-twrp-recovery-t3931322 since you'll be best using this to flash ElementalX
I'm guessing you flashed an incremental ota and not the full system image in step one? Might be your issue.

Flash stock boot IMG and uninstall substratum overlay themes, u will always want to do that before u update, then reflash patched boot image, then u can reinstall your themes

No he said he was able to boot after the update, it was when he enabled his modules, more than likely its a substratum theme issue
