Hey there, i dont know much about the carrier based variants but the basic steps are the same i guess. If you're rooted then you have to flash a custom recovery from there you can flash roms. Try googling.

[Completed] How to root Motorola Moto X 2nd Gen - Pure Edition xt1095

Hi everybody, hope everyone's enjoying their holidays. I can make this fast and painless hopefully.
I have found numerous old tutorials on how to root the Moto X 2nd Gen Pure Edition. I keep seeing posts saying this method or that method no longer works or that 5.1 cannot be rooted etc. etc. and I have seriously just resorted to registering and asking. I have a Moto X 2nd Gen XT1095 Pure Edition and want to root it, I am sure you've gathered this much so far. I just don't know what tutorial to trust. Anybody have an up to date tutorial on rooting this model? Or even an old method as long as it works. Thanks.

Hello,
Thanks for using XDA Assist.
You can unlock your bootloader, then flash [RECOVERY][victara] TWRP 2.8.7.0 touch recovery [2015-06-23].Flash SuperSU from Twrp and you'll have root access.
Refer this thread [FAQ] Frequently Asked Questions For Moto X (2014) [UPDATED-05/10] for questions about unlocking bootloader and flashing recovery.

Thanks for the info... After starting into this I see where several people are saying they are having issues with this method, I was hoping that maybe there was a nice solid way to root this, unless I am missing something which is usually the case.
Thanks again...

AFAIK,the safest method is to flash SuperSU from a custom recovery.
