I had rooted my phone months ago with the original method (thanks jcase), and I thought I'd share my experience applying the new OTA from Sprint.
First off all, let me say that I have s-off, so what you read here may not work for you without that, but sunshine can s-off very easily and quickly http://theroot.ninja/
As you know, you cannot apply an OTA with a custom recovery. So the "normal" way to do this would be to throw the stock recovery (if you backed it up or extract it from the OTA) back on the phone and let the update apply. Of course, if you've mounted system r/w then you'd need to reflash your nandroid backup of your system partition before the update will work. The big problem I see in doing this is that the update will also flash the boot partition, and I'm assuming that upon first boot your internal storage will get encrypted (because you are running stock boot). That's not necessarily a bad thing unless you want to keep root, then you'd have to wipe your data partition and start loading your phone all over again - BIG pain!
So I came up with this method and it worked great for me.
**** BACKUP YOUR PHONE ****
I did a nandroid backup from TWRP before I started, but I never needed to restore from it. However, if you lose something and don't have a backup, don't blame me.
I may have rebooted more than I needed to, but it only takes a few seconds and it doesn't hurt.
Step 1 - get the system.img and firmware.zip for the latest version. You can download the RUU from HTC and then use the HTC RUU/ROM Decryption Tool and extract these from the RUU, or you can download what I already extracted (this is 1.8gb so be patient downloading)
Now, you should have system.img and firmware.zip. I'm not going to go into detail on how to install and use adb and fastboot (if you're here and have a rooted & s-off phone, then you should know this already).
Go ahead and get your recovery ready. I used the latest TWRP twrp-2.8.8.1-hiae.img
Also, while you're at it, get your SuperSU. I grabbed the latest beta 2.67 and it seems to be working, but if you're not that daring then get the latest stable version
I'm going to just list the commands and not explain them too much... Again, if you've made it this far then you should know why we're doing what we're doing. I will explain that I've put the fastboot flash zip firmware.zip on here twice because, if you read the messages presented, it will tell you that hboot was applied and you need to send the zip over again right away.
Also, be patient with the system.img. If you've never flashed your system.img through this interface, it breaks the image up in pieces and sends it.. I think mine took 4 times.

If you don't already have the SuperSU flashable zip on the phone, then you can either adb push it or go through the MTP device, but flash the SuperSU zip inside recovery and then reboot. The zip warns you not to let TWRP try to get root. I was not prompted by TWRP, but if you are DO NOT LET TWRP ROOT YOUR PHONE.
Once the phone started to boot, it went through the "Optimizing apps"... Then it did the handsfree activation. I can't remember if it asked me about security on THIS screen or the next time it booted, but it did apply the latest PRL and update the profile and then reboot again. Be patient through all this.
Some things to be aware of (your results may differ)... My wallpaper got wiped out through this process, but everything else remained. Sprint ID tried to run, but that could also be because I never let it run when I first got my phone (I disabled the app using Titanium), so I just disabled Sprint ID again and reset my wallpaper. Some system apps that I had disabled using Titanium were now enabled again. Facebook and Messenger that I had previously disabled got enabled again. So there I did spend another 10 minutes or so finding all those programs and disabling them again. Android Pay seems to be working for me. The fingerprint reader is still working for me.
I hope this helps someone who might be pulling their hair out trying to figure out how to update with the latest OTA.

Use the RUU tool to extract the system img and just flash that
how to flash system.img?
I tried with the fastboot flash system system.img but not enought space advice has come up.
I've got the system.img but no method to transfer it to the phone.

Tried various ways to manage to get it running but failed. Now i am turning to you guys.

So have you downloaded the system files from Google and extracted em until you get all the individual img files?

I'm looking at the factory images I have saved. I have a bootloader version hhz11k and then hhz12d from one L preview to the next. I don't have a hhz11n. I may have missed an image here or there, though.

I currently have a HTC One A9 running 6.0.1 . The phone was purchased from "John Lewis" - a UK retail store last year. As far as I know it's a stock - direct from HTC phone - i.e. one not supplied by a UK carrier network.
I'm waiting for the OTA release of Android 7 - Nougat but it hasn't arrived yet. Do you know when I should be getting this? It's been out a few weeks now and so far - nothing.
Can I upgrade it manually? I tried the RUU from HTC the other week but it failed. Do I need to unlock the phone somehow even though it should be unlocked already?

Android N for HTC One A9 as of right now is only available for US unlocked A9 and apparently HTC One A9's in Italy
When you should be getting this is something I don't know
Yes you can upgrade if you s-off and convert to the US unlocked edition

Glad to hear that it is working!
So we have to do the update in exactly this order step by step and with firmware.zip first and twice and then the RUU zip-file to have success.

I should notice that it reboots back to RUU mode after the first firmware flash. So don't panic when that happens

Someone of you guys get TWRP to work with this version?
For me it allways reboots to OS after showing black HTC screen for about 3 sec´s
as ROOT, twrp then su?

Flash latestTWRP and don't allow changes in system, don't reboot , flash supersu 2.79 for systemless root than it should work. Look at TWRP thread for more information.

Here is a Link for the older Version, i have the same Problem with the new version (Directly reboots into system). With the older Version in the Link don't touch /system, let it be read only and use systemless root (/data decryption works perfectly ) because if you allow changes to /system this will end up in endless reboots, the latest version fixes this Problem, but it won't work with hiaeuhl at the moment, maybe a later Version will work again, you should keep an eye on the twrp thread.

Make sure you flash all system.img_sparsechunk to the system partition you might have more sparsechunks or less of them. Do not flash Bootloader or the GPT the error you have got is due to the GPT file being the older version to what is already on the phone.
Also make sure you have the correct firmware for your device.

you need to use mfastboot bud. Fastboot never works for motorola devices.

Huh? Really? Never used mfastboot and I have flashed dozens of Moto devices with no issues, granted all with Linux.

You are getting Preflash Validation errors, so either you are using an older firmware than what is installed on the device, or the incorrect one... Also, you are NOT following the flashing instructions given above, only flash the system sparse_chunks included in your image. Right now part of it flashed (like the radios) and other parts didn't, so you are in a precarious state, more info is needed.
Please post the output of "fastboot getvar all" and mask out the IMEI number please.
I'm having the same issue with my XT1541. Device has MPIS24.107-55-2-12 firmware, but cannot find same or newer firmware anywhere. Asked also in Lenovo forum where to find stock image but no response.
Other path, unlocking bootloader does not neither work as it fails with "Check 'Allow OEM Unlock' in Developer Options.", but as device does not boot, cannot go there.

Try sending it again, if it still fails try a different cable and/USB port... Then factory default in recovery and try the whole image again... if it still fails maybe redownload the image and extract again, making sure to verify you are flashing each sparsechunk in order. I don't think I have ever seen one sparcechunk fail in a factory image.

Are you trying to flash HTC One M9 RUUs on your A9? The 4.17.161.11 version doesn't exist on the A9, at least not yet. The first digit in the ruu version represent the increment in major android version update since phone release. The A9 released with android Marshmallow (version 1.xx.xxx.x) and then came the Nougat update (2.xx.xxx.x). So 4.xx.xxx.x is impossible as of today for the A9. There is no Android Oreo for the a9 which would be a 3.xx.xxx.x version and neither an Android P version 4.xx.xxx.x(Android P doesn't exist yet). All this just to say, you are for sure not using the right RUU if your phone is an HTC One A9... Or you have a M9 and posting in the wrong forum section...

Hi guys!
I want to install Leedroid Rom on my HTC U12+ today.
So i first had to install magisk so i follow the instruction.
Then i had to install TWRP for magisk. Ok so i go to HTC DEV, unlock my bootloader and so on.
Then i boot TWRP without install it to run magisk.
Then i make a big mistake, i run the twrp recovery.img also in the bootet TWRP.
Maybe i install on system, not on vendor, not the other two options.
Then i reboot phone.
And there is the ****.
Its looping all the time.
So i power off and go to bootloader.
I think i had no OS now....nothing is there.....
I can now flash via fastboot and also start TWRP via fastboot boot comand.
But all i try to install a stock rom is failed.
So pls help me guys, im out of ideas now.......

Then rename the the file something like fastboot1.exe and put it in your adb/fastboot working directory then do the same command, but remember to use the new name instead of fastboot use the fastboot1 flash zip........

It was simpler! download version 1.53.401.5, rename it to 2Q55IMG.zip and copy to SD.Reboot in downloade mode and then volume. Complete installation is done without problems.
