hi all,
my Nexus One is dying and now I'm crazy for buying a worthy successor.
I'm undecided between the One S and Galaxy Nexus ...
The thing that worries me most is the pentile screen, often criticized by many reviews. True, both have a pentile display, but the higher resolution on the nexus hide the pixel matrix.
So, I wanted to ask you an opinion about the screen, because I saw him quickly into the store, but it made not a great impression.
Which is a shame because the rest (hardware, ergonomics, power and battery life) looks very good ...
GNexus is a little bit older, but is equally beautiful (the shape and design are simply awesome for me) and it is much more supported by community, and also it cost me 100 euros less.
What would you do in my situation?
one last thing, I'd like the black version, have been solved the problems of paint stripping? I tried out the gray S and aluminum seems a bit too slippery ...

Well, if you don't like the screen, then you should probably choose the nexus. I can't really say I notice it at all, but then I'm coming from a Hero. Overall I completely LOVE the phone! It's fast, has good battery life and sense is nice as well. Also it feels and looks nice, and the size is perfect; a big screen and it still fits perfectly into one hand. I've tried the X multiple times in store and it just is too big for me
I have the black version and I haven't had any issues yet, not my mom either (she has an identical phone, It's kind of awkward, but is it my fault she has good taste? ). I'm still waiting a bit longer before rooting ,though, jic I have to return it
Edit: my biggest concern is the limited storage, but It's okay. I had 8 gb on my hero and never filled it up

i see no problems with the display too. it look better than the amoled screen i had in the past (galaxy s1, nexus s)
i believe its safe to say the processor on the one s beats the galaxy nexus.

I was actually in the same boat as you.
I had previously come from another carrier where I was using an EVO 3D and switched to a contract free plan with an Nexus One.
I found the Nexus One to be great but needed to upgrade.
I thought the Galaxy Nexus was a great phone. It's fast, sleek and, if buying unlocked, cheaper than the One S. The One S was just so cool when I got my hands on it. It's got a far better CPU than the Galaxy Nexus which really pushed me to it. Also, I find the form-factor of the One S to be perfect while at times I thought the Galaxy Nexus was a little bulky.
As for the screen on the One S. I was very hesitant to buy it because in the store I did notice the screen was not at the quality I was used to. Having previously used a true qHD LCD screen, it was easy to tell the PenTile display was not of the same caliber as far as resolution goes. BUT... It does still look great. The colors are fantastic! And, I thought the little niggles of the PenTile display would bother me day to day, but they have not.
Overall, the One S is a fast phone that looks amazing. I like pretty much everything about it (except that HTC is still witholding source code )
I eventually chose the cheapest option...
I got a great deal and for more than 100 euros less and other small details (see the screen resolution or the unconfortable power button on the One s), I took a Galaxy Nexus ....

I placed an order for the Nexus 4 16GB on the Play Store last week for around 380 including tax and shipping. It will still take two weeks before it ships, and now I am having second thoughts. I like my One S and am not too impressed by the Nexus 4 specs. Any personal thoughts / opinions?

The only things it has over the one s is double the speed/ram and stock android updated by Google, other than that the one s has a better build quality better camera

I've heard bad things about the N4's battery life. And I am very sceptical to any phone with a back made of glass. That said, it is really cheap for the specs it has. Snapdragon S4 Pro is pretty sexy.
Yea I'm not into the back being made of glass, the galaxy note 2 to me is the best on the market but until I get onto a new carrier which won't be for awhile I'm stuck on the one s

Cannondale, it is only thanks to you that I stuck with the One S. I only had it for 2 days and thought I had bricked it until I found your post on repairing a soft brick.
My opinion is that a LG phone will never have as good a build quality as a HTC phone, also camera is way below HOS spec. I have heard that the battery life is very poor. The only current phone I would possibly swap for is the Galaxy Note 2!
Change your mind and stay with the better phone for now.
I don't know, I see all this praise over the One S, only from the owners of one, I have the Galaxy Nexus and the HTC One S unrooted stock (for now) and I always prefer to use my GNex. Bigger and better display makes a big difference for the better and the customizations and support. The HTC One S is more powerful but the freedom of the Nexus is a wonderful thing! I haven't rooted my One S yet cause I can't find a Cincinnati Bell Wireless RUU for it, I guess there isn't one. So when I use my One S I miss all the things I can do with my Nexus. I suppose I can do the same things with the HTC it just doesn't seem easy or practical. The Nexus is a developers phone and if you are a flash addict like me thats what makes Nexus users always go back to Nexus. Once you go Nexus you never go back! Lol. I loved my Nexus S and love my Galaxy Nexus even more and I am sure I would love the Nexus 4, just don't have any reason to give up on my GNex yet. So if you are happy with the development for the HTC One S then I would probably stay, I still need to root mine to find out. From what I have seen, especially since there is no RUU for my network it seems to much of a hassle.
Unfortunately the one S is a highly under rated phone, people right it off straight away before even using one for more than a few minutes (even though pretty much every expert review has spoken very highly of it and the only disadvantages they mention of it, is the screen sharpness and limited storage), you don't get to appreciate just how good it really is in 10-20 minutes of usage. IMO the only phones that are truly better overall are the:
- XL and the X+
- GS 3 and note II
- RAZR HD/MAXX
Plus having virtually no advertisements for the phone means average joes etc. will think that it mustn't be that good and therefore won't care, advertise/market the phone as good as the GS 3 and iphones and people will be interested.
The galaxy nexus display is nice, definitely sharper/clearer than the S, however, IMO it is too dull for SAMOLED panel, the one S is the best when it comes to calibration for colour settings, whites are the best I have seen on a SAMOLED screen, view ability in sunshine is far better from my usage with both. The display isn't "much" bigger due to the on screen buttons, iirc the height is pretty much the same but the galaxy nexus is a bit wider, I would have liked the screen on the S to have been a bit wider.
I was going to get the nexus 4 if HTC didn't get the JB update out by the end of this month, however, after reading reviews and loads of users comments, I will probably stay with the S till the butterfly comes out here. Seems more like a side/down grade overall:
- Mixed opinion on the screen, some say it is as good if not better than the X display, but others say the screen is washed out and poor viewing angles, which I can't stand, personally I prefer SAMOLED screens overall
- camera overall isn't as good
- build/perceived quality and design IMO isn't as good (still a lovely looking phone though)
Main advantages of the nexus 4 over the S:
- battery life once they fix the problems with the drivers/software
- nexus device so will get updates
I didn't get the N4 simply because it's too big. I have a one S with AOKP JB ROM and it works like a charm--fast internet, data, no problems with any apps I've tried. I recognize I'm probably in JB 4.1 for the life of the phone but JB finally realizes the promise of Android and I'll probably be happy with it for the next couple of years. And on eBay the one S, rooted and all, was a third cheaper than the N4.

I had the two phones side by side the other day, and after turning both screens on my decision was made. After being spoiled by the true blacks and rich colors of the one s screen, I couldn't stand the nexus 4 screen.
As far as the specs go, yeah, you get more processing power and ram, but do you need it yet? Does screen size outweigh screen quality? And as far as updates go, if you're rooted, you got 'em.

I have a N4 and One S. I haven't had it long enough to give a full review. I've been waiting for the successor to the Galaxy Nexus for a while and was turned of at first to hear it was produced by LG. Now that I have one I don't care who made it. He's some simple observations.
Build quality: Very Good - My phone has no creeks or blemishes it's a perfect example.
Screen: Looks great, I don't have much experience with color accuracy but the colors/brightness/clarity are good.
They did speed binning on the SOC and I also got lucky there and got a "Fast" one. I think it just means the kernel will under-volt it by 50ma vs a "Normal" chip
I flashed CM on both phones as fast as I could so there isn't really any difference in terms user experience.
I don't use any of the new 4.2 features.
While it feels thicker laying the two phones flat on a table side by side they seem the same thickness overall. The One S is slimmer in the middle of course.
HTC One S has USB OTG. The Nexus does not, I'm really bummed about that.
Speed wise they are the same to me.
Turns out the 3g/4g switching that alarmed us when the One S came out is hear to stay. It's just more honest reporting of phones connection. Both my phones drop to H when not pulling down data and switch up to H+ when there is actual through put.
I thought I would like the buttons drawn on the screen but they seem to close. I don't like it now that I have it.
That's it for now. I need a little more time to get a better feel for it.
I am getting HTC One S with S4 processor for $180 and Nexus 4 16GB for $280

Hello, I decided to go for the One S (black, S4) after my Incredible S more or less gave up, and my work phone One V is just to poor to use daily.
My first impressions:
Amazingly fast, no lag anywhere. A big upgrade from both One V and Incredible S.
Size and design is beautiful, prettiest phone I ever saw.
I find it hard to use with one hand. It is a little too slippery.
The screen is only average, especially with text. I feel this is mainly due to the low resolution.
I was torn between the One S and One X, but decided the One X to be too large, although I much prefered its screen.
Now I think I might as well have bought the One X, if I am going to use 2 hands with the One S.
Of course I could get a slim skin or case for better grip. Any recommendations?
Or maybe I will just adapt to it after a while?
Overall it is a fantastic phone, just let down a little by one hand ergonomics and the screen.

There's lots of choice in slim hard shell cases out there, spend some time browsing and you'll probably find something you like. Failing that a clear full body skin by Zagg or another maker might suit you.
Yea I already looked at Diztronic and Ghost Armor.
They look nice but I am not a fan of cases and skins.
I will use the phone a little more first, to see if I really need it.
you need from the reason the aluminum is soft and every drop will leave a mark for good.
ive got the Case Mate Tough Case my phone would be a smashed wreck if it wasn't for this case, seriously buy a decent case youll be glad you did

I have mine for over 6 months, always without case or skin. At first I found it a bit unwieldy. You will probably get used to the size and shape over time and start automatically gripping it right.
Personally never had a problem with the screen, coming from a Desire [3.7"WVGA], but it's a fact that the OneS [4.3"qHD] has lower resolution that the OneX and pentile matrix at that. It's very bright and saturated tho..
Bought the Htc genuine 742 transparent one. It's the thinnest and invisibile I saw. The best. Look at the Skullcandy too.

Lucky you... mine is laggy and with some issues...
Barely There case doesn't offer much protection if dropped but its comfortable grip is great for PREVENTING drops in the first place.

Second that. Using that case now. Allies for one handed use. Not sure it will provide a ton of protection, but helps with daily wear and tear.

Yes, the major drawback on One S is the display quality. While AMOLED performs very well on watching movies because of vivid colour/high contrast/pure black but the low resolution(QHD) isn't good for text reading.
Well, I like my One S because it's an one-hand device, light weight and slim. If you want to use a two-hand one, you should get a HTC Droid DNA instead.
If you really need an one-hand with 720p display, go for Sony Xperia V.
The xperia phones dont really suit me.
Anyway after some more use I am really liking my One S. Such a snappy phone. Camera is top notch too. And the size is great for typing in landscape.
Just tried a friends Note, that thing is huge, and seems slower.
There is more to screens than just what res. is used.
I rather have the qHD SAMOLED display over a TFT 720P screen any day of the week.
Personally I think the screens used for sony xperia devices look pretty poor overall.
What the one S display lacks in terms of sharpness/clarity, it makes up for having the best calibration (for SAMOLED) settings so colours aren't too saturated like the GS 2 and not too dull like the Galaxy nexus screen, whites are the best I have seen on a SAMOLED screen and the outdoor view-ability in sunshine is superb. Screen is sharp enough and text looks fine, obviously when next to a LCD based screen it won't look as good, that is mainly due to the pixel arrangement, pentile VS RGB.

Well, I very love my One S simply because of size, durable and amazing camera like you but the low resolution really make me sad. If HTC next year going to release an One S like model(I want 4.3" with light weight) with upgraded display, probably I will get it.
Note I and Note II got a really big different on speed. Note I is running A9 dual core with 1GB ram while Note II got A9 quad core plus 2GB ram. Pretty much a double speed on Note II.

I got a Sony Xperia S before One S, got much sharper text , I sold it because cpu slow and hot and camera suck at really slow speed.
Well, this is well-know just a matter of taste while some guys like amoled and some others prefer TFT/IPS. They both have pros and cons.
But the question here isn't related to panel, it's all about the resolution things. If you use a 720P amoled for text reading, it will still outperformed our QHD.

It amuses me how people ***** and moan about screen res qhd vs tft etc etc etc.

1) I can see the text clearly.
2) I can see screen in daylight.
You might as well go around comparing everything to anything else, this dog is better than this one - this pair of crotchless panties is better than that pair - my **** is better than your **** and so I could carry on but seriously people you knew what you were buying and so what if one screen is supposedly better than another. If you dont like it sell it and buy something else just please shut up moaning!

I'm having a hard time giving up my HTC One for the Nexus 5. I love the speakers on my One and the IR blaster really comes in handy. The Nexus 5 is just sitting in my room. Someone convince me. Or am I making the right decision on keeping my One?
I am in a similar boat. I have been debating on whether or not to sell my htc one and get the Nexus but I too love the convenience of the IR blaster. In the end, it will come down to personal preference. On one hand you have an extremely capable, well designed phone with great speakers and the other hand you have the top of the line specs in an inexpensive, always up to date package. I'm personally going to wait and try kitkat on my htc one before I make a final decision but for now, I'm swaying towards keeping the one.

I'm biased toward the Nexus line so I can not be objective, but I can tell you this phone is great if you like stock android without bloats.
I dumped mine without even thinking about it.
The only thing I miss is the amazing screen. The n5's screen is good, just not as good.
I also bought a N5 at launch and ditched HTC One. The One is a good phone. But I like that the N5 is lighter, feels better in the hand (didnt like the metal). The biggest gripe with my HTC was the proximity sensor. I was constantly pressing buttons with my face. I did an RMA, but no fix and my gf has the same issue.

Have both as well and am using the N5 32gb black as my daily phone for the last two days.
N5 - feels great in hand, larger screen in a marginally larger body so quite a bit of "actual" real estate for viewing especially extra width which I prefer and much smaller bezel around the screen so appearance looks like all screen on the N5 vs. the black borders on the One. I actually prefer the extra weight of the One but the soft touch feel of the N5 is awesome. Faster in all respects in running the same apps, wifi, etc. except the camera. Camera is slow and I need to use HDR+ for reasonable results. Hopefully a software update improves the camera.
The screen really is excellent on the N5. Battery life is a toss up as I have only used it for two days but seems to be similar. Speakers on One are significantly better. Sound quality seems better on N5 for the few calls I have made. LTE (AT&T) is faster on N5 and browsing on Chrome is remarkably smooth and pages load very fast.
Miss some aspects of Sense like the pop-up notifications on the lockscreen.
Plan to use the N5 for the week before making a final decision.
Looked up specs on N5 vs One:
N5 - 5.43 x 2.72 x 0.34 @ 130g - 5" screen @ 445 ppi
One - 5.41 x 2.69 x 0.37 @ 143g - 4.7" screen @ 468 ppi
The N5 does not feel much larger in hand due to the smaller bezels, but the screen seems significantly larger in actual use also due to the smaller bezels around the outside. Watch a HD movie on both and it really is evident. The slight difference in ppi is not something I have noticed as the N5 screen is just as nice as the One, but with more actual screen on the N5.
I recently switched from the one to the N5 and so far I'm loving it!
-The phone feels smoother and quicker when navigating through apps and loading pages.
-Screen looks great, I don't personally see a notable difference between it and the one. Plus I'm much happier with the larger screen size.
-Speakers on the HTC are better, but that being said, the N5 speakers aren't bad at all. I personally use headphones all the time so the speakers didn't matter to much to me.
-I've continued using the HTC headphones with the N5 and it sounds excellent. Especially love the Google Music full bleed on the lock screen.
-I absolutely love Vanilla android, easily the number one selling point for me. KitKat is great so far, only one complaint is how large the icons are (which can easily be changed with a rom) but this is just my preference.
-Not having the permanent 'home' and 'back' button is great, more screen space and easier use when in landscape.

Also true. I personally prefer the stock launcher, that was just my only complaint about it. You get used to it after a while, just a noticeable difference when switching so I figured I'd mention it.
I was lucky to get my Nexus 5 on 1st Niv.
It was both my first Nexus phone and first non HTC phone.
My HTC One is back in its box, but can't bring myself to sell it.
The screens on both phones are very good, I prefer the design of the One and the speakers and their amplifiers are much better on the One, I sometimes miss the FM radio, but prefer the much quicker response of Snapdragon 800 in the Nexus 5, at least in every day use.
Nexus has been my "daily driver" since I got it.
If only I could have the best features and components of each phone in one device.

I have a N5 ordered, to be shipped Dec 3.
With shipping, the 32gb comes to $460 CAD. I currently have a N4 16gb that can be sold for $250 I'm guessing.
Since I've been running Rastakat 4.4 on the N4 with ART enabled, it feels really smooth and the battery life also seems improved - almost as much as the N5 battery life estimates.
I do love a nice screen and wouldn't mind the extra pixels on the N5 and having a touch thinner device.
Those who went from N4 to N5, was it worth it? Am I alone in this?

i actually like the form factor of N4 more, every time i pick up my white nexus 5 i feel like its going to slip out of my hand, i am not sure if the black version is the same. ordered some protective case to solve the slippery problem. other than that i thnk N5 is better than N4 in every other category.
32GB Black here. Soft, matte finish is excellent on the black and feels better in the hand. Smaller bezels and slightly wider in physical size makes the screen area seem significantly larger than the One but overall physical size of the N5 is only marginally larger than the one.
Went from N4 to HTC One to N5 and would not go back. N5 is a significant improvement IMO in every category other than speakers as nothing else comes close to the One with the speakers on the front.

I would say the black N5 is the one to get if you want to go naked with your phone. I've had a chance to check out both. I have my white one in a Spigen Ultra Hybrid case. Naked it's extremely slippery. I wish they would have at least put the grip coating from the black one on the sides of the white. Instead it's just a gloss black paint.
The N5 is totally worth it if you can get one without defects. I was lucky enough to only get a minor power button rattle, which is gone now that I have a case on my phone. I agree the phone is expensive fully-loaded but if you think about it long term, it's more future proof than buying anything else right now because you don't need to depend on carrier updates. Instead you have a device with one of the strongest dev communities out there. But you already know that because you have the N4.
Most people I talk to say it's totally worth it. Just navigate around the amazingly fast interface and do a speed test with LTE and you'll feel great.
You're in a nexus 5 forum, of course everyone will tell you to get it

My 16gb nexus 5 is the best buy I've made lucky to get it last Sunday Sim free what can I say I was going for and had just got a note 3 I've sent that back and I'm happy I did the n5 is a beast and will get better imo .

The nexus 5 is like no other device I have ever owned. It is an absolute beast of a phone and you won't regret getting it at all. of course IMO. Even underclocked to 1.5 using franco kernel on stock rom, I can not get this phone to lag.

Since I've been running Rastakat 4.4 on the N4 with ART enabled, it feels really smooth and the battery life also seems improved - almost as much as the N5 battery life estimates.
I do love a nice screen and wouldn't mind the extra pixels on the N5 and having a touch thinner device.
Those who went from N4 to N5, was it worth it? Am I alone in this?

The beauty is in the eye of beholder. The N5 is worth $200 extra to me, how excited you will be to receive one I have no idea. If you're having these doubts maybe you'd be better off with the N4 if you like it (I, for one, hated the back glass which made the phone slide off my QI chargers).
I came from an N4 and I have to say that it's not much of a jump. I've actually thought about selling it TBH (I go through a lot of phones because I'm a bit picky).
The camera is absolute garbage (can't focus for ****), it takes ok pictures I guess (when it focuses) and the battery life is crazy unpredictable.
The phone is crazy fast and fluid but I never felt like the N4 was slow. The phone looks cool but coming from an N4, you probably won't be blown away. I haven't been, maybe I'm bias IDK....YMMV.
I sent mine back today. I still don't regret my decision. I'm back on my S4 for now.

love it. it feels a lot better then the S4 that I had previously. a lot smoother too. this is my first nexus device though so I have no idea how the others were like
I must be the oddball one who is contemplating on returning my 16GB Black Nexus 5 for a 32GB White Nexus 5. The matte finish feels great but it attracts fingerprints like crazy when held. Also I have this fear that the finish will wear out exposing the plastic underneath. But having a larger capacity phone would be nice.
