I'm fairly new to this so please be nice. There's something I don't quite understand. As the front page article points out to the recent unlocking of the S3
The devs here at XDA came to rescue shortly and it was rooted, but custom ROMs and kernels were still a no-go.

I've been seeing custom ROMs all over the Android Development sub forum (Synergy, CleanROM just to name a few off the top). How can they be flashed if the bootloader is locked? Am I missing something?

The bootloader just got unlocked, like, within the hour.
There was a workaround called kexec which allowed kernels and other ROMS to be flashed.
Some ROMS like Synergy only change the system folder which means the bootloader isn't a problem (no custom kernel, etc)

Those are stock ROMs that only require the phone to be rooted.
Current ROMs use an exploit that bypasses the locked bootloader. This means that custom kernels had to use kexec, which is now not needed.
There is something in the booting of the phone and this article is very interesting and also very informative.
So what Roms kernels can we use now that the boot loader is unlocked?

Hey guys huge beginner on this type of stuff. I have one simple question though.
I know there is now a way to Root my phone, but not unlock the bootloader? So I'm wondering, is there any way for me to get a rom that is based off 4.3 at this current moment or am I out of luck?

Yes, you can root your phone. Rooting and unlocking the bootloader are two different things. If you're on the latest update, you won't be able to unlock anyway. If your BL isn't unlocked, you won't be able to use any of the 4.3 based ROMs. I don't think there have been any developed for use on SafeStrap.
If your on the new update you can't unlock your bootloader. Which means the best you'll get get is debloated stock roms.

Debloated stock just means is the Verizon builds, just with some of the extra software taken out and tweaked. It's not like cyanogen mod which had more options and tweaks. But with a locked bootloader its the best your gonna get.

However, you can use Xposed Framework to do a lot of modding/tweaking to a stock ROM. I am running a custom ROM, but I still use Xposed for a lot of things. You can theme your stock ROM in ways that are very similar to having a theme manager on AOSP ROMs.
have you verified for sure that you cannot unlock the bootloader? it doesn't hurt to try, unless you already tried.
What version is the build?

Which is why I said if you haven't unlocked the bootloader.
Once it's unlocked, it's unlocked. You can't lock it back up because apparently, it's a physical change in the phone, such as a fuse being blown or something like that. At least, that's what I've read. http://blog.azimuthsecurity.com/2013/04/unlocking-motorola-bootloader.html
Apparently, it's something Qualcomm has created called a QFuse. These are software programmable fuses that once blown, they can NEVER be put back to their prior state. In Motorola devices, there is a FORCE_TRUSTED_BOOT QFuse. This is all explained by Dan Rosenburg who is the developer that gave us the ability to unlock our Droid RAZR HDs. it's a good read and explains a lot.
Of course, it never hurts to try and unlock it after downgrading back to the previous version.

doesn't hurt but is 100% pointless, as the system version has nothing to do with the trust zone files that cant be changed back.
the system version serves as a reference point to when it used to be possible in relation to the other files that were irrevocably updated, nothing more.

Actually, my device is not Developer's Edition and I could unlock its bootloader following Motorola's official unlock from de link below:
(I can't post the link because I have less than 10 posts, but if you google "What devices are supported by the Bootloader Unlock program?", Moto's official website should be on the first page)
In case you couldn't find it, PM me.
Hope it helps.

You would have been the first and only one that we've seen where this worked. If it was that easy, everyone would do it and have an unlocked bootloader. However, that is not the case.

As was suggested to me, i rooted and unlocked bootloader with motochopper and motocopalyse without a hitch....took less than 2 minutes it took me way longer to decide to do it lol. flashed the recovery via adb and again without a hitch. used rootjunky's site as tutorial

3 Roms, Superlite, stock and Paul Pizz. You cannot and it's nearly impossible to downgrade. A jtag is the only option. Attempting to downgrade will brick your device

Honestly I wouldn't know. I have an unlocked bootloader. You'd have to ask someone else on that one. There are apps in the play store to check the IMEI. Unsure what you would even need the test mode for as they have disabled most of the testing on the S3 models

Do you know what that means? (on picture). how can we know the device is already unlocked bootloader?
That means nothing much, only that knox/firmware knows that you flashed odin or another ROM.
Go into the stock recovery and post a picture of that.
If it DOES NOT SAY NE1, your bootloader can be unlocked AFAIK.
If it DOES SAY NE1, JTAG is your only hope to downgrade(and it isn't worth it on a device this old imo)

No, if only unlock it you will still receive OTA updates.
Once you flash TWRP or a custom rom you won't get them any more

No idea about that, I was only n stock long enough to get one update lol. Now I'm on a custom rom so I won't get them any more anyway
But from all I know the bootloader unlock has absolutely nothing to do with updates, only flashing a custom recovery or rom will stop them.
