when i got my phone it was on 2.3.4 and i followd this guide
http://jaxov.com/2011/02/how-to-root-android-2-3-3-gingerbread-on-nexus-s/
Thank you for your Reply.. But the guides is all about 2.3.3, I am just afraid that ill brick my phone if i mess up something.
So can i just ignore the 2.3.3 part..and just think tht its the guide for 2.3.4?
I followed this guide:
[GUIDE] Step by Step ROOT Nexus S via ClockworkMod Recovery image (i9023 and i9020A)

The root process for the nexus s is universal. It doesn't matter what version you're running on. What matters is your phone model.

Just flash the official ICS with Odin. Then re-root when your done.
P.S if you phone hangs at the att boot animation after flashing the official ICS with Odin just boot into stock recovery and wipe data and cache:thumbup:

You could flash CMW via odin and then flash the official ICS in mohan's post. You phone should still be rooted after this.

Very first post at the top of this page, says "How to...Unroot" in the subject line. The stickies are your friends.
Hello,
I've been searching this forum for rooting guides and i came up with this one and it looks pretty straightforward to me but i have messed up samsung phones in the past so i thought i'd post here just to get some advice. I have quite a lot of experience in unlocking and s-off htc phonesand i'm told samsung phones are way easier.
So please correct me if i'm wrong: basically i just need to have the samsung drivers and adb/fastboot to unlock the phone, then flash cwm recovery and flash any rom i want?
I'm currently on Gingerbread 2.3.6
Baseband I9020AUCKF1
Build GRK39F
Kernel 2.6.35.7-gf5f63ef
P.S. If anyone could recommend a stable 4.2 rom that would be fantastic

Welcome bhai
I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S3 that is now sitting unused since I upgraded to the S5.
The S3 is an:
SCH-I535
Android version 4.4.2
Baseband version I535OYUDNE1
Kernal version 3.4.0 [email protected] #1
Build number KOT49H.I535VRUDNE1
What I would like to do is make this phone a dedicated GPS using various mapping apps like Locus Pro, OSMand, Here and others. The phone was rooted and I returned it to stock and it updated to 4.4.2. I would like to re-root so that I can take advantage of the external SD card. Can someone give me some advice on where to find the correct root and also what stock apps I can delete without affecting the GPS location functions?
Thanks in advance and I apologize if I placed this in the wrong category.

Towelroot would be your best option for root, unfortunately I can't help much with the GPS, I'd suggest using maps but what to disable I can't direct you there as I'm not on the locked bootloader
From my CM11 S3

Will Towel root work with version 4.4.4., Kernal version 3.4.0 dated Sep 14, 2014? I don't want an expensive brick.

That I'm unsure of, I'm almost sure that the S3 ended up on 4.4.2 and not 4.4.4 but I could be wrong

Yes, with a caveat. You cannot flash a custom recovery if your S3 has the official 4.3 or 4.4.2 OTA installed. Do you know which software is installed on your S3?

Yes I have android 4.3...so I would have to use a computer..thankyou for the answer

No custom recovery can be installed on your S3 at all. From your phone, use Towelroot to gain root access then install Safestrap as a workaround the locked bootloader. You can then only use VRUCML1 4.3 based TouchWiz roms, just look for "VRUCLM1" or "ML1" in the title of the rom you are looking at. All pertinent info can be found in this handy guide for you.
Ok I am doing allot of reading and want to ask..my phone says baseband version (unknown) and com.phone has stopped so im wondering how can I get it back

You need to post more information than that. Show screenshots and tell us exactly what you tried to install to your phone prior to this circumstance.
I created a new thread with some more details please check it out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2993586
