I have a Shield Tablet K1. I cannot get the compass to work properly.
I have tried everything: Lollipop, Marshmallow, nothing works.
More often than not the compass is stuck, or -when the needle seems to move freely- it gives false headings, sometimes 50 degrees off, usually when pointing North or South.. I have tried calibrating several times, using several apps, as requested. Doesn't work.
My theory is that the Shield Tablet K1 cannot have a working compass, because of the built-in powerfull magnets: two woofers and the attachment for the optional cover on the left side. Try holding a knife to the tablet's back, and you'll know what I mean.
To summarize: The Shield tablet's compass function should have been disabled in stock rom. Does anyone agree?

I had the same issue, but I did sort it out. I just removed the case, the genuine one uses magnets to latch to the frame of the tablet making the compass crazy. Remove any magnetic case, restart the table, recalibrate. Once you put your case back.... no, It will be crazy again.

Yeah, I think you might be right. If I open up the "Smart Tools" app with its compass, it also has a magnetometer reading, and the reading is always very high.
If I use the Case I have, which has magnets and position it on an angel at the back, the magnetic readings can come down closer to zero. When they do come done to that lower figure the compass seems to start working.

Mine seems to be really sensitive so that the screen rotates even if I tilt the phone a small amount. Is there any way to fine-tune it?

Wondering this also since I noticed there is no calibration for it in CM6.
Don't know about on CM6 but on other roms, go to Settings > Display > G-Sensor calibration.
Anyway to do this on non-rooted phones? Ever since I upgraded to Froyo it seems to rotate if I tilt it even just slightly off it's axis
Those directions were for rooted and non rooted phones...

My compass points to the wrong direction or I'm asked to calibrate my compass. What should I do?
Your phone contains a digital compass which measures the magnetic field's strength in three direction with three separate sensors. The orientation of your phone is calculated from these values. Unfortunately the sensitivity of the sensors are a little different. To correctly calculate your orientation your phone must measure first these differences. This is done during the calibration process. To calibrate your phone, simply find a space where no external magnetic field is present (preferable outside of buildings) and rotate your phone 1-2 times on EACH of its three axes (Swinging your phone in big 8s in all direction will also do, but it' less scientifically correct ). If you feel that your compass has become inaccurate you can repeat this procedure.
But i dunno if it works or not..

That just calibrates the compass.
Calibrate Compass
1. Try to stay away from magnetic fields as far as you can
2. Open GPS Essentials and tap on compass (calibration will not work when the compass is not showing)
3. Put the phone on a flat surface with the display pointing up
4. Move the phone slowly, 5 seconds per full rotation is ok
5. Rotate the phone three full cycles around the axis pointing upward
6. Rotate the phone three full cycles around the axis pointing away from you
7. Rotate the phone three full cycles around the axis pointing right
8. The direction of rotation doesn't matter

There are other methods, like the 8-pattern, that are easier and might also calibrate the compass. Watch this Youtube video to find out how.
I was having navigation and compass problems with my new GT-I9001, searched the google but did not find anything to help me. Yesterday I installed GPS Essentials app and there was a Calibrate Compass link. Here it is, copied from my app GPS Essentials.
seem to work for my cell phone. But my Nexus 10, nope. It point correct once, and than it easily go off again.
tried it without the cover too, there is a magnet on the cover to turn off the screen when it's closed. I don't wear watches or anything metal, unless my body magnetic field affect it.
my cell phone, I didn't install GPS essential and the calibration seem to work just fine. I have an old school magnet compass to check.

As the S view cover has a magnet in it, it seems to affect the compass on the phone.
The compass no longer functions correctly and won't point in the correct direction.
This also affects the maps app as the arrow won't point in the direction you are facing.
Some other applications which use compass, maybe augmented reality apps won't work with this case.

I experienced this the other day too without the S-View Cover, but I think it was due to the plane I was on from Sydney to L.A. crashing on an island with heavy electromagnetic energy.
Dammit. I knew I forgot to push the button.
A few days ago I realized that my compass suddenly stopped working correctly. No matter how often I restart or calibrate the phone, I can't get it back to work. If I don't move, it points to wrong direction and then slowly turns clockwise. If I move, the compass turns correctly, but always pointing to a wrong direction. Different apps show that the magnetic field strength is 429µT, as if there was a strong magnet nearby. Normally, it should be around 50µT, I suppose. I don't use any case or something that would interfere. Tried it inside the house and outside at different locations. System is completely stock 4.4.2. Any ideas?

To summarize: The Shield tablet's magnetic compass function should have been disabled in stock rom., as it will never work properly. The only way to experience a trustful heading is by monitoring your heading via gps when moving.
