Yes it will install custom recovery on your phone and you can install custom roms (if there are any good ROMS out there which are better then stock).
But I wouldnt suggest trying any other ROMS for 3 reasons;
1. The bootloader of a lot of the Sky-850 variants are locked so you might brick your phone by trying to install another rom (I did once took me a good 5 hours to bring it back to life)
2. They are all in Chinese and Vietnamese so you can accidentally flash a wrong ROM without Knowing the right one.
3. None of these ROMS out there are any better then the stock one, not even close so you better stick to the Stock ROM.

I've got an A850S, and the only reason why im looking for a custom ROM is for the SMS fix, I'm using the phone outside korea you see. I'm actually looking for a modded stock rom for the SMS fix, or like a patch i can install for the sms fix, but haven't found any yet.

I also have the S version, Just Install Go SMS or Pansi SMS from the market. You will be good to go.
You can also root the device using the method above and freeze the stock messaging app (which I would not recommend for you).
So the best way is Install a good messaging app from the market and hide your stock messaging app using the hide feature in the app drawer.

I know what you mean by freezing the stock messaging app, thing is, if i use go sms or whatever sms app, im able to send messages with 160 characters fine, but anything more than that, it says unable to send message at this time, please wait until the service becomes available. I can set handcent to break the message into 2 separate ones, but id like it to be just one message if you know what i mean. (sorry kinda OC)
i try 2 machine but both cannot detect the driver when i plug in the phone a850s, both were 64 bits with windows 7 and window xp machine. i have install the driver given but it just cannot find the sky driver . i cannot reinstall the driver as it will prompt me i had already done so. please help

Finally get it rooted,
happen to have another os window 8 which i haven't used it for months, after boot up it take quite a long time to search for driver (not sure how long cause was away for an hour) , i never install the driver from this website link. after that i just run the software and it works, and follow all the steps given except i need to swop to my sdcard2 for the zip file as the sdcard is the internal memory of the phone
Is there any way to roll back to original recovery and unroot
. I don't even want a custom ROM. I just want to be rooted and run stock with rooted google play store apps. Am I there?
I just want to run rooted apps with no ROM flashing...oh god why...where is the guide to root and only root?
You'd think this http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1652398 would be where to go to do that, but evidently it's sending me down the road to custom ROM flashing. AGHGHGhjkdashbdas. Do not want.
Ok, so here's where I am, I have finished step 8:
1. Download Odin 1.85 .
2. Download(USE FIREFOX!) ClockworkMod TOUCH 5.5.0.4 OR TWRP 2.2.2.0, they are both named "recovery.tar.md5" and will be downloaded as "recovery.tar.md5", DO NOT CHANGE the filename or else it wont install.
3. Extract the contents of odin-185.zip to a folder.
4. Run Odin 1.85.exe from the folder you extracted it to.
5. Prepare Odin: Check "auto-reboot" and UNCHECK ALL OTHER OPTIONS. SEE COMPUTER SREEN PICS BELOW.
6. Only Click "PDA" and select the recovery.tar.md5 file you downloaded. SEE COMPUTER SREEN PICS BELOW.
7. How To Put your device into Download Mode: DO NOT TOUCH THE POWER BUTTON FOR THIS PROCEDURE. - download mode is NOT the same as recovery mode
a. Connect the USB cable to your PC, but NOT to your phone.
b. Remove the battery.
c. Reinsert the battery.
d. ATT PHONES - Press and keep down both Volume Up and Volume Down keys simultaneously.
ROGERS PHONES - Press and keep down only the Volume Down key.
DO NOT RELEASE THE VOLUME KEY(S) UNTIL INSTRUCTED TO DO SO IN STEP (f)
e. Insert the USB cable into your device. The phone will turn itself on when usb cable is inserted - DO NOT TOUCH THE POWER BUTTON.
f. You will now see a screen w/a yellow triangle warning you about installing a rom . Now release the volume key(s) - SEE PHONE PICS BELOW
g. Press and release the "Volume Up" key to enter into download mode - SEE PHONE PICS BELOW
h. You should now be at the Download Mode screen w/odin recognizing your phone. SEE COMPUTER SREEN PICS BELOW.
8. Click Start in Odin. It will flash the new recovery and will reboot the phone when completed. Your device will autoreboot into android. You are done using ODIN.
9. UPDATING CWM OR TWRP:
Now you need to udate CWM, download and copy cwm6027touch_v14.4.6_skyrocket.zip file to your sdcard, boot into recovery and choose "INSTALL FROM SDCARD" from recovery, install the file and reboot back into recovery to see if it installed correctly.
sk8erwitskil's CWM thread is here HERE , check to see if above file is the latest or dl the "Flashable zip" CWM file from there.
If upgrading TWRP go here HERE and follow the dev's instructions on using goo app, or you can use the flashable TWRP 2.4.1.0 file HERE and copy that file to your sdcard, boot into recovery and pick "INSTALL" from recovery, install the file and reboot back into recovery to see if it installed correctly.
How to enter recovery read section #2 below.
How to use cwm read THIS, also read Q&A on recoveries
You can upgrade to either CWM OR TWRP from which ever recovery TAR file you used in ODIN in step #2 from above.
10. You're done newbie and soon to be a power user, read and educate yourself as much as you can before flashing, happy flashing.

OK so here's the list of instructions I'm using to root my Skyrocket:
I have completed everything through step 4. I completely do not understand what to do after that. So, like I'm a 40 year old soccer mom, can you explain what I'm supposed to do to fulfill step 5? Is it through the odin app on my pc? Is this completed on my phone? The link provided that ostensibly explains to noobs how to do this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1777970) doesn't adequately explain to me what I'm doing and where.
Help, please!

Assuming that you have successfully installed your custom recovery you then need to know which recovery you installed before you update it. If you used CWM you can get the updated version from the Skyrocket development thread. Put the updated CWM file on your SD card and flash that zip while in recovery. If you used TWRP you can update it through the app that it installed if it did install one. GooManager (someone correct me if I am wrong on the name) I think GooManager needs suoeruser privileges. So which recovery did you flash?

i think you should stay on stock, read more b4 you brick your phone, no sense in rooting/installing custom roms when you dont know how to install a file on your scard, im not putting you down but trying to give you friendly advice
Vincom has a point. I taught myself through these forums and Google how to do it back in October of 2011. I flashed many a ROM and many files since then until I bricked mine Thursday. Now I have to pay 60 dollars to get it fixed. But on the upside I now have a Note II to play with.
Edit: She is asking for help though and she did ask in the right thread. Some people need more help than others.

For just rooting u have to run the superuser zip through your recovery
Oh and if you are not understanding what the stickies are saying to do then look it up on youtube because there are a lot of step by step instructions there.

a. put updated file in your micro sd card.... plug ur micro sd card to pc... drag file and drop it in your micro sd card. put the micro sd card back in phone.
b. to go to recovery press power button + vol+ + vol- all at once and hold.
why do u need to unlock play store app? playstore is accessible completely even without root. you can also sideload Amazon appstore and other apps without root. no need to get all bricked up just to run playstore. i'm confused what are you trying to do again?

im guessing he wants to run apps from play that require root, eg titanuim backup, but he doesnt know how to put a file on his sdcard, but then he has to learn how to install zips from recovery which someones got to teach him since he doesnt want to read/learn/search for the answers. he seems to be impatient and wants it done "now", its a brick waiting to happen, my advice to him was to slowdown and learn

agree and such bad attituted too. i wouldn't want to help anybody who cusses in every conversation geez little respect goes a long way
It you just want to root and not want to flash any custom ROMs or anything related to it,I will tell you how to from total beginning
ALL DATA WILL BE LOST , BACKUP EVERYTHING
In order to root Android 4.2 the following three requirements must be satisfied beforehand:
The Android SDK, which you can download from Google Developers
A custom recovery like ClockworkMod (CWM) or Team Win Recovery Project (TWRP)
SuperSU, which you can download from CF-Root
There are no major differences between the two, but TWRP is more touch-oriented thanks to larger buttons. CWM is also available in a touch-compatible variant, but it has much smaller buttons. It's a matter of personal preference between the two though, but you have to choose one.
Before starting the process I urge you to perform a backup, as all data might be lost afterwards. You can copy the contents of the SD card to a safe external location such as cloud storage service or computer hard drive.
The first step that needs to be performed after all the files are downloaded is to install the Android SDK. Afterwards open the Android SDK Manager and select the following two items:
Android SDK Platform-tools -- it contains the required programs to install Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
Google USB Driver -- it contains the necessary drivers for the Nexus device
Then you should create a folder in an easily accessible location within the command line. In this example I will use a folder named "Root" in my C:\ drive in Windows. The path name will therefore be: "C:\Root".
From the folder where Android SDK Platform-tools is installed (in my case it is "C:\Program Files x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools" copy the following files to the previously created "Root" folder:
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
fastboot.exe
The following files must also be copied to the "Root" folder:
CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip -- SuperSU file
The custom recovery that you previously downloaded for your specific device (please see below)
For my 8 GB nexus 7 wifi(codename "grouper" I will use TWRP with the name "openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-grouper.img".
You can easily find the codename for your devoice by looking into Google
The custom recovery file differs for each device, please make sure you download the correct file
In order to make the process smoother for instance the SuperSU file can be renamed to "root.zip" and the custom recovery to "customrecovery.zip". It's a matter of convenience, but for accuracy I will stick to the original naming for this guide.
If the previous steps are completed you must have the following six files in your "Root" folder:
adb.exe
AdbWinApi.dll
AdbWinUsbApi.dll
fastboot.exe
CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip -- SuperSU file
The custom recovery. In my case it is "openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-grouper.img"
From there, you can proceed to install the drivers for "fastboot mode". To install them, follow these steps:
Power off your Nexus device.
Press and hold Volume Up and Volume Down then press and hold the Power button; the device will now enter "fastboot mode".
Go to Device Manager (Computer -> Properties -> Device Manager in Windows 7/8) and identify the device; for me it shows up as Android 1.0.
Right click Android 1.0 and select "Update Driver Software," then select "Browse my computer for driver software".
Select "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer," then click "Next".
From "Have Disk..." option go to the folder where you have Google USB Driver installed (for me it's "C:\Program Files .(x86)\Android\android-sdk\extras\google\usb_driver" and select "android_winusb.inf".
Out of the three options select "Android ADB Interface" and validate any future warning window to install the driver.
Final preparations
Everything is prepared in order to start the installation process, but in order to do so a command window must be opened. Windows Key + R opens "Run"; type in "cmd" and the command window appears. Typing "cd C:\Root" and pressing Enter sets the "Root" folder as the working directory. Pressing the Shift key and right clicking inside the "Root" folder will also deliver the same result.
The device must be turned on in "fastboot mode" which I have explained at step no.2 during the driver installation process, and obviously plugged-in to the computer. You then have to type in the following commands while in "fastboot mode":
fastboot devices -- this is just for verification purposes; if there is no listed device then the drivers have been improperly installed and steps 1 through 7 must be redone.
fastboot oem unlock -> you have to accept the prompt in order to continue -- this command will unlock the bootloader, but it will also erase the data on the device which is why a backup is necessary.
fastboot reboot-bootloader -- this will reboot the bootloader.
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.3.1.0-grouper.img -- this will flash the custom recovery --please use the specific file and name for your particular Nexus device!
fastboot erase cache -- this will erase the cache -- might not be necessary but it's just as a precaution.
fastboot reboot -- this will reboot the device.
After Android 4.2 is loaded and running the SuperSU file must be copied from the "Root" folder to the internal storage (shows up in Windows Explorer as a Nexus device). A simple copy and paste will do the trick here.
Then you have to power off the Nexus device and enter "fastboot mode" again. Use the Volume Up and Volume Down keys to navigate until you can select "Recovery Mode". After the power button is pressed the device will reboot in the new custom recovery.
Rooting your Nexus device
If you have ClockworkMod installed, you have to perform the following steps:
Select "install zip from sdcard"
Select "choose zip from sdcard"
Select "0" (zero) folder
Select "CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip"
Select "Yes - Install CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip"
Select "Go Back"
Select "reboot system now"
If you have Team Win Recovery Project installed, you have to perform the following steps:
Press "Install".\
Select "CWM-SuperSU-v0.97.zip" -- for me it's in the "0" (zero) folder
Swipe to confirm flash
Press "Wipe cache/dalvik" (just as a precaution)
Swipe to wipe
Press "Reboot System"
After Android 4.2 loads your device can run apps with elevated privileges (meaning it's rooted). A SuperSU app is installed in order to allow root requests, so please use your judgement on which apps you grant access.
If you experiences any problem, please reply and I will look into it.

That's why I have not used the word flash anywhere, I know that he does not know how to flash , I have posted the right thing for a total noob,( at least if he knows how to use command in windows or install drivers)
I helped him in the way I could and what he requested

You think that helped. LOL. Your telling him to do things that aren't even required to gain root with this device. Not everything is a nexus bro. Next time you wanna help study up on the phone your giving advice about. lol
Well , thanks for telling me that every android isn't rooted in same manner, I was thinking that all devices are rooted in same ways like for my nexus

naman14, im not putting you down, your step by step howto is admirable, good work, but the problem is that the op is clueless on tech stuff, its not the word "flash" he has a problem with, i could of said "install" and it would lead to same conclusion, he doesnt know how to copy a file to his sdcard, if he cant do that he has no business in modding his phone until he learns more. anyhow the op is long gone by now
I upgraded my samsung skyrocket s2 version 2.3.6 to 4.0.4 through the Kies. Then I tried to install TWRP 2.2.0 and Odin 1.85. I saw COM 14 ; COM 17 when I hit start button .It said
FAILED. Now it showed a yellow triangle in the middle of phone & monitor pictures. ( including : Firmware upgrade encountered an issue . please select recovery mode in Kies & try again). Please help . Thank you very much.
I just tried other laptop . I saw COM 3 but it said it couldn't open the serial (COM )port . All thread completed (success 0/ failed 1)

BLU Quattro 4.5 (440D) GSM Recovery+Root
Hello... I got my BLU Quattro 4.5 (D440) a while back, didn't fuzz with it much right off. The Stock ROM was sluggish at best thought there was even an issue with the Digitizer/screen. But this thread was extremely helpful. I am now running Shendu ROM 4.1.2 one of the suggested ROM's above. I tried the other 2 first and they were mostly in Chineese and I had an especially hard time getting them switched over to English. Either way onward to the point. I have put together a few helpful tips-tricks for my experience with this phone and its phoenix transition to an awesome handset. Thats right now this is my daily driver and I love it! See below hope its helpful.
BLU Quattro 4.5 (440D) GSM Recovery+Root
These steps for this phone only!! Not responsible for any issues.
1. download ROM's, Recovery, & Driver from XDA (this thread)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2327417
2. Enable USB Debugging! Go into Apps-Settings-DevOptions - Check box for USB Debug
3. Have original USB cord if handy! I tried with a Samsung OEM cable but no luck getting drivers to stick. Use original is best. (If you have one.)
Plug in USB Cord to PC then Phone and see if windows detects drivers. let it. It wont get the ones u need later, but what it does find is for USB storage. (you can move over your ROM's/Gapps to storage, downloads folder is a good spot).
4. Go to... http://junefabrics.com/android/downloadold.php to get pdanet software. Install it and it will give i the right drivers for ADB support. I used 4.01 to match the android version currently on my phone.
5. Extract the Driver provided from XDA. Put it in a folder with the ADB commands. Or you can get it all here... http://downloadandroidrom.com/file/G...usRootNew.zipn <-- I know this isn't for BLU but, if you extract this to a folder, and also add the drivers extracted to it as well this works! I've done it.
6. Extract the English Recovery to the same folder.
7. Turn off your phone. Hold down Vol up and Power button for about 5-9 seconds. Once you see a green screen let go of both. Screen may flicker then go black but the icons at the bottom will stay lit. You are now in APX mode (nvflash) mode. (as stated above in original post)
8. Check your Win 7 PC device manager. For a Phone device with ADB. If you you may need to update driver with the one that came from XDA, but the PDANet software should make it work.
8. Go to the folder and find Recovery.bat file (may have Chinese in file name. Double click and a command prompt window will pop up with a bunch of unknown characters, wait 5 sec then hit enter. The batch file should take of pushing the necessary recovery through ADB to the phone. It will error if it can't.
9. If completes OK. Push power for 7-9 seconds to power off the phone. Hit power like normal to turn it back on. It will boot up like normal (or it should).
10. USB is still connected this whole time and you can open a command prompt window. Navigate to the folder you placed the Recovery into. Something like user/username/desktop/BLU/recovery..etc)
Type ADB devices....it should show you that is is connected to your device. Then type " adb reboot recovery " and the device should reboot, give it some time.
11. Once in recovery. Best to do a backup of the original ROM & system. that way you can get back into recovery if anything goes wrong and wipe out the problem by restoring and starting again.
After you backup === you can get into recovery without the command being typed in or even being connected to your PC.... By holding Vol up + Power till you see the green screen then let go of power but keep holding Vol up till you see the BLU Products boot screen then let go ===
Clockworkmod Recovery should be on your screen.
you can reboot phone now and get back to original with no changes. Or you can venture into the world of loading ROM's (There in your downloads folder if you saved them in Step 3)
ROM 101
BACKUP-BACKUP-BACKUP 1st thing once in Recovery ...can't stress enough how much of trouble you can keep yourself out of by keeping an original backup.
As I stated before the Shendu ROM + Gapps is running smooth and all features I've been trying are working flawlessly!! Thanks to original post for getting me going. Just thought I'd add my 2 Cents.
This post is for people who wish to root their Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 (WiFi) SM-T210. This MAY work for other versions as well, but to be safe, i suggest you proceed only if you have the SM-T210 version. But before that, i want to warn you about a few things.
Disclaimer:
Firstly, I neither own these things nor have any role in creating them. I am only acting as media acts, that is, providing the information to you. This information is strictly educational and i do not wish for any of you to cheat any hard working developer, as i myself do not do so either. Also, this information is strictly not mine. I tried this method and found it to be working and am just distributing this information
Secondly, If your android device, except for SM-T210 and maybe for it too if you don't do it properly, gets bricked during this rooting process, please do not hold me as responsible as all you do is on your head.
Thirdly, as I am sure you have heard alot of times, if you go ahead with this, you can consider your warranty Null and Void.
Now, lets begin with the rooting. After rooting, i will give you a few tips about which apps to install, although I don't know many of them.
To be downloaded before beginning: (Error, Being a new member, I cannot post outside links here. Sorry for the inconvenience, if you need these links, please email me at {removed}. As soon as i can, i will post the links
Odin (preferably a new version 3.07 or 3.09, this link is of 3.09) :-
TWRP Recovery, as it is working for my device:-
Universal rooting software (android armeabi):-
Samsung USB drivers, if they don't install on first try, try deleting and reinstalling them. I give this as this is a better alternative than Kies:-
Move the rooting software to the SD card of your device
After downloading, please do exactly as i say, unless you wish to brick your device instead of rooting it.
Procedure:
1) In your computer, install Samsung USB drivers. Also, please make sure that your device is atleast having 50% battery.
2) Open Odin.
3) In OdinSelect PDA and use it for TWRP Recovery. After you navigate to "TWRP Recovery.tar.md5" and open it using Odin, the file's pathname should appear on right of the PDA button.
4) Still in Odin, DESELECT Auto-Reboot (better if you do it) and Re-Partition. If you don't do so, this is where everything will go wrong.
5) Boot into download mode in your Galaxy Tab 3. To do so, press the home button, the volume DOWN button and the power button all at once. If successful, a screen with a big triangle with a ! mark will open with a few warnings. Ignore these warnings and press Volume UP button.
6) Connect your GT3 to your computer using the USB cable. If drivers are installed properly, a sign should open over your ID Com button, signalling the port. Also, just below the ID Com, and the other buttons of Auto-Reboot, etc, below them, there should be a small box where it says "Device added", then "Device Removed" then "Device Added" again (if it doesnt show removed and only shows added once, it doesnt matter). Also, when you use the PDA button for recovery, it should end with "Leaving CS" or something like that.
7) If everything until now is done properly, we can proceed to the easy part. Click Start
8) It will probably take a few seconds, then end at "Res OK" and RESET in the button a little above ID COM. Remove your device from the computer now
9) Now, we have to turn off the device using the power button. Just hold it and it will turn off. Once it does, you have to get into Recovery Mode. To do so, press Home button, Volume UP button and Power button all at once. Then a screen with a few options should show, and Team Win Recovery Project (if you used TWRP) should be above (if you have flashed it correctly)
Of course, if you have installed custom recovery earlier, there is no need to do all these above instructions.
Now, in recovery mode, simply click Install. Then, you will see a list on the left side. Scroll down, and select external sd card, and navigate to the android armeabi file (make sure you haven't decompressed it (unzipped it, i mean). Then, TWRP will install this to your system and you can reboot into normal mode. Download SuperSU from Play Store (preferably ClockWorkMod) and open it. Update your binaries if it asks you to.
To verify, download "Root Checker" from Play Store. By the way, install SuperSU and allow it to grant permissions to Root Checker before you try verification.
If it says Yes, which it should, then you have successfully rooted your Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 (WiFi) SM - T210 and installed recovery on it.
If it says No, please comment below, or check the permissions for Root Checker from SuperSU.
For feedback (whether it be haters or questions), just comment below.
After rooting, the SECOND app to be installed after rooting is "Freedom" available at in-appstore.com. All information is provided there. And, i say second app, because the first is SuperSU.
Also, you can install SD Boosters, Speed Boosters, Recovery tools, Market Place (to download incompatible apps), and a lot more applications. Just Google it up bro (or sis). :highfive:

woul this work on android version 4.1.2? and what will be the remedy if i cant access the TWRT Recovery after the green pass?
Sent from my D2005 using XDA Free mobile app
Serphant, the green pass means that you have flashed the custom recovery to your device. To open TWRP recovery, press Home, Power and Volume Up Buttons together. It will work. Just hold them till the Samsung logo shows up.
Didn't work... When rebooting normally, the TWRP recovery starts again.
Rebot-> Power down, then power up again will show the TWRP recovery too.
So, I cannot boot to the system!
Yes, I did exactly what you said, except for:
- Auto reset cannot be turned off in ODIN (It's greyed out)
- You did not mention that the android-armeabi file should be on the external card, so had to remove that one and put the file onto it. Thereafter I did install it correctly.
Reson is mentioned here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-tab-3/general/information-t210r-custom-recovery-t2884616
The recovery file is incorrect! So I installed the CWM v6.0.4.9.KK instead. That one does work!
Where is the file ''android armeabi'' to root the smt210 after I install twrp 3-0-0 ?

If you install TWRP 3.0 you can root it easily. Once TWRP boots it will ask you if you want to leave the system ro or if you want to make it rw. Make it rw. Then make a backup. (If storage space is an issue, you can select system partition only. System partition is 1.4gb) Once your backup is complete, it will pop up and say something like "It appears this device has no root, would you like to root it now?" Tell it yes and swipe to confirm. Then reboot system. You may have to open the SuperSUInstaller app and tell it to root or it will already have root and SuperSU installed. (I can't remember as I've used TWRP to root mutiple devices.) Last step is to update SuperSU app from the playstore, then open the new SuperSU and update binary.
Hello,
I'm new to all of this and I rewrote your instructions just to see if I understood them before trying to root my tablet. Now I have a few questions.
1. Do you know if these downloads work on a Linux Ubuntu environment?
2. What does RESET mean in thecontext below? Is it "press RESET"? Or is it a message that I must simply visualize above the ID COM before removing the device?
"7) If everything until now is done properly, we can proceed to the easy part. Click Start
8) It will probably take a few seconds, then end at "Res OK" and RESET in the button a little above ID COM. Remove your device from the computer now"
3. What is comprised in the "above instructions" here? Is it all between steps 7)-9) (aka the "easy part") or... just... all?
"Of course, if you have installed custom recovery earlier, there is no need to do all these above instructions."
4. If I do everything correctly Root checker must show Yes upon opening, is that it?
"To verify, download "Root Checker" from Play Store. By the way, install SuperSU and allow it to grant permissions to Root Checker before you try verification. If it says Yes, which it should..."
Thanks a lot for sharing these steps! I hope to update this old tablet to a newer Android version, if that's possible.
I'll try to attach the way I re-wrote you instructions, if you check it out please let me know if you spot any mistakes.
Have an awesome day.
I am not responsible for anything that happens in your life. Including what happens as result of following steps in this thread.
Hello all. After a long journey here, we figured a new thread would be in order for new comers not to have to read through fifty pages of information. Here you will find firmware to fix or update your Viking Pro. You will also find root methods, bootloader unlock and custom recoveries for this tablet. Lets start with ROOT...
Method 1: Kingroot. Kingroot works on this device. you can find it here. It's pretty straight forward, just download and install the apk and root.
Method 1.5: SuperSu. Kingroot works but it's not the best root out there. once you have root, follow the instructions here and Kingroot will be replaced with SuperSu.
Method 2: Su flash-able ZIP. This method requires you to follow steps in posts No. 3 and 4. Once you have custom recovery installed, You can flash This.
This method is a bit redundant. However, it does allow you to make a completely stock unooted backup of your rom before making any changes.
Check out posts 2, 3, 4 & 5 for the good stuff.
I'm gonna go ahead and thank everyone responsible and If I forgot to mention you, please don't hesitate to tell me and I will correct the situation:
@Bogram (Edited the bootloader so it could be unlocked on x.12.x versions)
@Jacube22 (Duplicated the method from Bogram to make the bootloader on x.9.x versions unlockable)
@vampirefo (Compiled a compatible CWM recovery for us)
@ewilley2008 (Found most of the firmware)
@mayzemay (Initial root thread)
@NepoRood
@jerryvail35
@Sir Jaxxy
@Snigglez

@Chainfire (For root)
FIRMWARE
There are two main branches of development for this tablet. It is very important to know which one you have because they are incompatible with each other. I personally bricked my first one with firmware from a x.9.x while mine is x.12.x. How do you check? Simple. In your build number, you can find it in "About tablet" in Settings or in the text at the top of the recovery screen. It's at the end of the number and it will look like 1.12.30, 10.12.20, 2.12.20, 1.9.1, 1.9.5, 10.9.1...etc The number in the middle is the important one.
Steps(Windows): For step 2 you will have five seconds. Preloader mode is only active for five seconds. So read first!
1- Extract the drivers to the destktop and open the device manager.
2- Plug your tablet in as such: turn off the tablet. Plug a male to male USB wire from the computer to the USB port on the tablet. now plug the power wire into the tablet. now very quickly in the device manager locate the new device and right click on it. select "update driver software" then select "browse my computer for driver software" and "browse". Now navigate to the driver folder, select the "CDC" folder and click on "OK" the "Next". The driver should install at this point. Once that is done, unplug the power cable from the tablet.
3- Extract the firmware and the sp flash tools to your desktop.
4- Start the sp flash tools and where it says scatter file loading click and navigate to the folder where you have the firmware and load the scatter file. You will see the firmware get loaded and a checksum check.
5- Once that is done, uncheck the preloader from the list and click on the download button.
6- Plug the power cable into your tablet. At this point the sp flash tool will load the firmware into the tablet. DO NOT UNPLUG ANYTHING UNTIL THE SP FLASH TOOLS SHOWS YOU A GREEN CHECK MARK TO INDICATE THAT IT IS DONE OR YOUR TABLET COULD BE HARD BRICKED AND UNREPAIRABLE.
7- Press the reset button and turn it on. Done!

And Google of course...
Bootloader
So the bootloader on this tablet is locked. To unlock the bootloader, in a perfect world, you would usually boot the tablet in fastboot and type the command "fastboot oem unlock" and then follow the instructions on the screen. However RCA did not code in the volume keys in fastboot mode so it was impossible to unlock the bootloader that way. So our friend Bogram edited the bootloader and now the volume keys are not needed. What swell guy eh?
Unlocking your phone’s bootloader completely wipes (formats) your Android phone’s internal memory including applications, contacts, SMS and MMS messages etc.
So what you need is a scatter file like this one and a patched bootloader like these: x.12.x or x.9.x .
You will also need ADB & Fastboot and the drivers.
1- Just like in the FIRMWARE section, install drivers and SP Flash Tools.
2- Open SP Flash Tools and load the scatter file and in the line where you see "uboot" on the right click in the blank field and a window will pop up. select the patched bootloader. Make sure it checked and click on the "Download" button.
3- Now plug the male to male USB cable and then plug in the power. SP flash tool will flash the bootloader and then show you a nice little green check mark.
4- At this point you need to unpack the adb folder from the RAR file and place it in the root of you hard drive(C: ) then open a command prompt and nvigate to you adb folder (cd c:\adb) and leave it there for just a second.
5- On your tablet unplug the power wire, hit the reset button in the back and boot it into recovery mode by pressing and holding the volume up and power buttons together until the RCA splash screen comes up then release them.
6- In recovery, use the volume keys to navigate to "reboot to bootloader" and use the power button to select.
7- At this point your tablet will be in fastboot and your computer should detect it and install the driver. If not, the driver is in the "Android" folder in the driver files you extracted.
8- In your command prompt you left opened earlier, type "fastboot oem unlock".
9-Your tablet will do some magic, summon a demon, banish it to the depths of hell, reboot a couple of times and then it will have a unlocked bootloader.
10- Done. now you ca move on the next post and flash recovery.
Bogram also created a tool that patches the bootloader automatically should you have a different version we don't know about or what not...

RECOVERY
This section depends on a unlocked bootloader. If you did not unlock your bootloader in the previous post, do so before continuing to this one.
So what you need is a scatter file like this one and a recovery.
CWM + Carliv compiled by vampirefo: (x.9.x)Clockworkmod recovery (x.12.x)Clockworkmod recovery
TWRP V3.00 compiled by Neporood: (x.9.x)TWRP V3.00 recovery (x.12.x)TWRP V3.00 recovery(Coming soon)
- Open SP Flash tool and select the scatter file.
- in the recovery line, on the right side in the blank field, click and select your downloaded recovery.
- Click on the download button.
- Make sure your tablet is off, plug the USB cable first and then the power cable.
- SP Flash tool will flash the recovery and show you a lovely green check mark.
- Once that is done your recovery will be flashed.
** The stock system has a file in the system folder called "recovery-from-boot.p". this file flashes stock recovery randomly at boot so with a rooted system, navigate to the folder with a root capable explorer and delete the file so that your new recovery stays there.
** When rebooting from recovery, cwm will tell you to fix root. Don't. Select no every time.
For thos of you who want a file explorer in recovery, You can download this Aroma installer flashable
It's a nice tool to have...

ROMS
Not yet but soon.....
I'd swear I've seen all this somewhere before... lol
Good job, brother!
Now , let the roms...begin.....
woot ... just in time as I brought my Viking Pro home from Wallyworld Saturday night.
Any thoughts on ADB? I couldn't make it all the way through the other thread and eventually just gave up.... ended up figuring out Kingroot on my own and then just enabled ADB over wifi. Would much rather have a wired ADB solution as moving an APK (I'm a developer, duh) over wifi can be somewhat s-l-o-w.
Any plans to make a thread like this for the RCA Maven Pro (RCT6213W87DK)? It'd be really swell.
EDIT: Actually, with those sources you posted, I actually might be able to do this on my own.

I've got a Maven, and I've already done the porting. I'll be posting a guide tomorrow morning sometime. For now, I've sent you a PM with links to the firmware. Check your firmware version, mine is V36-1.9.21 (as long as you have the "9", you should be ok) The zip file has everything in it, preloader, scatter, custom recovery, etc...
Maven Guide is up, find it here

I can't get the port(s) to light up under OSX. I've tried a couple build.prop changes, plugging in micro usb, usb type a, power connector, and various combinations but none of them appear to trigger registration of a usb device of any kind on the host machine.
I can't even get simple stuff like MTP to work.

Time is my issue but I'm looking at two things. there is a firmware package i found on the Chinese server for a tablet with the model number rct6603w47dk with the same board as the viking pro but with a 8163 instead of the 8127. i think its doable to port over to our tablet. it is android 6. also the maven pro(rct6213w87dk) which is really close to our tablet with the same board but a larger screen, has adb working on it...
You should be getting a reaction through the micro usb port... on windows it shows up as a malfunctioning device.
i get nothing when sniffing the USB bus on my MBP.

I does the same thing on Ubuntu 14.04, absolutely nothing shows with "lsusb" in the terminal, unless it's in fastboot mode. You can use fastboot to flash the device, if you don't have access to a Windows machine...
I tested the new 1.9.3 firmware on my tablet... and it just shows a black screen.
DO NOT FLASH IT. it didn't work

What version of Windows are you running..the difference is the drivers are signed or unsigned.. This matters more on newer versions of Windows.
