Image yes, baseband is another issue. I'm still on the leaked 6.0 baseband for TMo and my push notifications are inconsistent.

Earlier today my phone kept trying to download new firmware from VZW. I was running stock root. I flashed a new Rom and that hasn't re-occurred.

Would have been interesting to see what the url for the update being offered was. You can usually find it in the logcat listings for the phone when it's being offered.
What version of the stock ROM were you on?
Did it say how large the update was?
1.103.65.7 is the firmware I was running. It didn't say how big the file was either. I freaked and didn't want to lose root so I flashed another Rom.

hello, I'm considering putting CM 7 on wifes phone. MY does not have an "update"package which would receive an OTA. Will a custom ROM inhibit this rather remote possibility. I think if this phone ever gets an update it will be via a computer update program and not OTA.

Yes it will block ota's. It will never have 2.3 unless you put cm-7 on there it seems.

The CM 7 vs Stock ROM for activation.
The CM 7 ROMS do not do activation/ provisioning right? One has to go to Stock to do that?.
Thanks

You are correct. That's a good reason to always have a stock ROM (or backup) at least on standby if necessary.
I find stock ROM easy to backup and restore, the problem for me is the recovery. I'd like to be able to backup my recovery and make a flash able zip.just don't know how to.

You mean, the recovery you boot into? There should be no reason for you to change it very much.. Although didn't b_randon14 manage it? I don't think it's possible, as up until this point I've never seen a flashable Recovery.
I recommend miui for MT. It works really well. And lasts me about all day. I'm using the 10/28 update

My serial number is zero is that normal?
I rooted it and don't know what it was before if in had one.

My bet is you flashed the initial root ROM like I did. If this is the case, flash a new version based off the stock VZW ROM, then factory reset your device. This will clear that, maybe a few other issues, and remove the custom message on boot.
Yep and doing what you said fixed it.
Thanks!

This has been fixed using the following methods in my original post, however I still cannot update the modem/firmware in any way, it seems. I fully give up on it, as nobody seems to have a conclusive 100% fix for AOSP ROMs. There are so many fixes on the internet, different ones work for different phones, at my wits end with it and not bothering with the increased signal. Not worth a broken camera.
(Original post)
Hi, I'm unrooting and rerooting due to the camera issue many people are having "failed to connect to the camera" when opening any camera app. I still never found a way to fix it on my phone and am rerooting in order to attempt to fix it now that CM10.1 is out. Can someone please check over this steps to make sure this is the correct way of doing this so I don't brick my phone or end up stuck with this camera issue again? Again, I have tried absolutely everything under the sun other than rerooting, methods on other forums, this forum, etc. Nothing works. Anyway, these are the two methods I will be following:
1
Following the steps from this site:
http://theunlockr.com/2013/04/10/how-to-unroot-the-samsung-galaxy-s-iii/
2
Following the steps from this page, including the optional:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2332825
3
Download CM10.1 (CM official update on main site) and gapps 20130301 (http://goo.im/gapps, uppermost version).
4
Flash
5
Pray I have a working camera.
Are you running either MD3 or MF1 firmware?

Flashed MD3 which caused the inital re-break (Forgot to post that I actually had this problem before, and fixed initially by going through the camera files and bringing the .bin files back from a TW ROM, onto my CM backup. Anyway, after breaking, I'm back on MB1 and still broken, the TW .bin file "trick" doesn't work anymore for me now.
What kernel are you running?

Did you even try the current firmware? MF1?
Get it here: http://invisiblek.org/sch-i535/firmware/d2vzw_VRBMF1_firmware.zip
Flash in recovery and you should be good to go. If that doesn't fix it you may have to ODIN back to stock.

Isn't that what's causing the issue, MF1?
Or was MD3 the cause? I had MB1, it was fine, flashed MF1 and the latest CM10.1, and one of those caused the camera issue for me :/

MF1 and MD3 are essentially the same and both would break the camera unless your kernel is updated to fix the problem.
Isn't the new Tz file the problem? I have MF1 firmware which broke my camera, so I flashed the MB1 Tz and now I'm all good.

Well if you want to troubleshoot it I would start by flashing my ruu that's posted. See if you get 4g on your phone with that.

I just now am getting familiar with what an RUU is and from my understanding so far there's 2 types? 1. radio upgrade unit & 2. rom upgrade utility. Which is yours? I'm not really looking forward to flashing roms atm, just looking for something quick like flashing some firmware that doesn't overwrite my entire system partition 'IF' possible. If not then am I stuck with flashing what appears to be a new rom? Or do I have another option? Thanks for reply!
Edit: Also I forgot to include that I'm S-OFF with bootloader unlocked & permanent root w TWRP recovery, would this act like one of Samsungs crappy OTA's and re-lock my phone IF it was the ROM thing I mentioned above rather than just Radio Firmware?

And ruu is an ruu. It is both the stock rom and firmware included. There are reset parameters that a factory reset on stock recovery can do that twrp etc are not.
This will not affect your lock or s off status and it's pre rooted. Also, there's not really "permanent root" on any phone. More so with s off you have the ability to flash su and root.
