I have a Droid Incredible Rooted using Unrevoked forever with S-Off. I have been running CM 6.0.2 for a while now and had an issue the other day with my SD card. The card died and when I put a new card in the phone got stuck in a boot loop. I tried reflashing CM 6.0.2 and gapps but I continue to get the same boot loop. I understand that you need to wipe all data but when I atempt to wipe the Dalvik Cache I get the the following message "E:Can't mount /dev/block/ (File Found)" what do I need to do to fix this. I have no phone right now and have become extremely dependent on using it for everything from GPS to MP3 player in my daily life so any help would be greatly appreciated. I have read some posts suggesting running logcat to find what error I am getting during the bootloop that is happening, but I have no idea how to do that. I think the main issue is that I cannot do a full wipe before flashing the ROM.
Please help! I don't want to chalk this up to a bricked device, but I won't be able to hold out much longer since I have to travel this weekend.
First of all, do not double post. It just clutters up the forums.
Second, you need to post this in the Droid Incredible forum or at the VERY LEAST, the Android Q&A forum. I'm not sure why people took the time to create all of the different forums around here if you guys are not even going to use them.
I'm just taking a shot in the dark here based on my experience flashing older Android phones. So do not tell me I'm wrong, AGAIN this is just an option to try:
Just boot into recovery and do a factory reset on the phone. AGAIN, I'm just going on what I CAN REMEMBER here. Use the hboot menu try a restore. Load a factory ROM onto the SD card (using your PC) and the flash it.
I don't know man, maybe I'm wrong about all of this. FACT is that I've had NUMEROUS phones that were in the same shape you are in right now and after google searching, a little common sense and READING I was able to fix the issues. There is a way to go back to your FACTORY ROM but I'm not going to waste my time doing the research for you here, it's your phone and you have access to the same information all of us do.
EDIT:
I mentioned common sense. With that being said, take a look at your own post bro.

I assume you meant "(File NOT Found)". You are trying wipe data off of a NEW SD Card here. How do you expect it to wipe files that are not even there to start with? Make sure your battery is fully charged before doing anything with the phone also. You might think that sounds like it has nothing to do with your problem BUT it can cause boot loops on SOME devices (android and others). Reset to factory from hboot menu. SKIP THE WIPE ALL PART BECAUSE YOU HAVE A NEW SD CARD. Just get back into your phone running Android and then you can redo everything from there.
Thank you for the response.
Sorry for posting in the wrong thread, perhaps a mod could move this to a more resonable place for this question. I'm not trying to clog anythining up. If that isn't an option I'll just create a new thread over there, but like you said that would just be clutter.
First: I did not mean (File NOT Found) the error says (File Found), seems like an odd error on a Formated SD Card that is why I mentioned it.
Second: I tried going to a stock ROM and it would not flash to the device I think it was looking for the previous official ROM that was relesed for the phone and would not install since that did not exist. The one that I downloaded was when Verizon pushed FroYo for the DInc, perhaps I can find one that supports a different upgrade path.
After trying all logical steps, google searches and reading many thread regarding people who have been stuck in this situation I was not able to find anything that was helping me restore my phone, that is why i started a new thread.
Roll Tide <<<< so you won't be so upset with me
The only reason I said posting in the device specific forum or android forums would be better is because there would be more people that know how to fix it viewing your question.
I'm shooting in the dark here but have you tried flashing Clockwork again? Just putting the .zip on the new SDCARD and flashing it? I'm sorry man, I've searched and tried to come up with a good answer but I've not found THAT much. Post in the Incredible forum would probably get your problem solved. I'm not sure that there is much of a difference between deviceds when it comes to recovery but I'm sure that you will get more accurate answer over there, even in the Android section.
Hello! I apologize in advance for my lack of knowledge.
First of all here is my phone info
Rooted RAZR maxx hd with unlocked bootloader (XT926)
My main objective is to flash custom ROMs and see if any are better and faster than stock.
My problem is I have no idea what I'm doing. I can't seem to find any threads that are simple enough for me to understand what I need to do and in what order I need to do those things.
Supposedly I need to back up my phone which seems to be the same thing as having a recovery???
If there is a thread that simplifies backing up and using a custom recovery please post a link.
I don't understand how to back up my phone, or if I use my computer or phone to do said back up.
I don't understand how to use the app ROM manager, my phone isn't listed on it when I try to download clockworkmod. So I downloaded a file cwm.img and I don't know what the heck to do with it?
I think I have adb on my computer?
I'm so confused and there's too much information and it makes no sense to me. Can someone please help me or post links to SIMPLE walk throughs of what I need to do and tell me what order I'm supposed to do them in?
I'm sorry if you think I haven't searched because I've been searching for a long time over a few days and all I've found is information that is too complex for me.
I appreciate any help! I'm new and I don't want to hurt my phone.

Mine is a Razr HD (XT925) But it's mainly the same except roms and some tools (and probably some other things I don't know...)
My main objective is to flash custom ROMs and see if any are better and faster than stock.
Which is the idea I had a week ago
My problem is I have no idea what I'm doing.
I was exactly in the same position since this is my first smartphone ever ^^

Well I had to search a while cause I first of all wanted to backup the most I could before doing anything.
Supposedly I need to back up my phone which seems to be the same thing as having a recovery???
This is a good thinking But there are limitations on what you can do without making the first thing which is rooting your phone "and then unlocking it".
If there is a thread that simplifies backing up and using a custom recovery please post a link.
I don't understand how to back up my phone, or if I use my computer or phone to do said back up.
The first thing I could do, was to backup the Apps/Contacts/etc... by using some apps like : MyBackup
The thing is : these applications are limited until you are rooted, because you wont be able to save apps data like your game scores or whatever
The second way to backup, is to make an entire backup of your system and data, which can only be made after unlocking the bootloader (by installing a custom recovery).
Be careful, unlocking your bootloader will ENTIRELY WIPE the data you have so make backups BEFORE.
I don't understand how to use the app ROM manager, my phone isn't listed on it when I try to download clockworkmod. So I downloaded a file cwm.img and I don't know what the heck to do with it?
Not sure about it because I never got that app before unlocking my bootloader.
I think I have adb on my computer?
To get adb on your computer, you need Android-SDK.
I'm so confused and there's too much information and it makes no sense to me. Can someone please help me or post links to SIMPLE walk throughs of what I need to do and tell me what order I'm supposed to do them in?

I can understand, personnaly im working in IT and I understand how this can be a pain when you have no knowledge at all on that subject :/
I appreciate any help! I'm new and I don't want to hurt my phone.
Once again, good thinking, but even thought, going where you are going is very risked.
And I can tell...because I nearly bricked my phone...as you can see here : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2631547

Not pocket proof:
CWMR be careful of the double touch conformation!-you can use the keys til you are versed w/ the input flukes that inspired Philz recovery. Otherwise solid & simple.
I use Philz which may support everything in Rom Manager soon.
RM works w/ Photon Q recovery works on all the msm8960 phones, xt907, 925, 926, mb886. keys only.
All recoveries
Just because you can format it, it still may not be supported in the backup or even the xml restore (/persist)
edit
Get a SANDISK 64 GB CARD, FORMAT FROM RECOVERY to default format-fat32. Then when in doubt BACKUP.
All for now
bye
No offense intended, but if it's too difficult for you, than you probably shouldn't touch the phone until you understand everything. Before you start modding, you need to know how to recover it so we don't have another brick. Once you start to understand the minor things, it will be like a light switch and the more complex things will start to make sense.

I do believe a 925 can save themselves the bother of the factory path if they do not mind it being not reversible. Yet both are irreversibly noticeable.

Sorry about that I thought XT926 were close enough from XT925 (which is the only device I own) to have the same unlocking process.
My bad ^^
well if you're already unlocked and rooted, use this
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/w/Install_CM_for_xt925
follow the instructions, go to the development forum, download TWRP, CWM whichever floats your boat, and just use adb and fastboot.
id reccomend a backup, nandroid, titianium, etc.

This is an excellent point. When I first got into this a couple of years ago, I soft bricked my Bionic. I was able to recover it, but I could have avoided the problem if I had read a little more first. Now I read, read, read before trying something new. I found YouTube videos very helpful when I was a noob. Rootjunky is one resource, online and on YouTube. rootjunky.com

yes i supposedly backed up with cwm, but the last time i got in that option, it did not find that backup.
at least there is a firmware superthread, but my cwm is for 4.4 only, so id have to flash another cwm to go back to stock jb
i find a titanium backup to be better, just backup my sms/calls, wifi keys, and user apps...

No offense taken! I appreciate the constructive criticism. That is why I posted this question. I am reading all I can and I won't be attempting anything more until I understand the concepts. I just didn't know where to go for a more simple explanation of these concepts since apparently I'm not as intelligent as 90% of you guys on this forum!
I have already rooted and unlocked my phone so that's a good start haha. I will now follow the advice given in this thread and hopefully learn enough to understand these more complex concepts!

No, you won't have to re-flash the image as resetting the unit doesn't wipe the system, just data

The forum gets it's bad name from the stupid questions asked over and over (and over) again each time a new update comes out, not from frustration boiling over. I was being rude so next time the person will think twice about posting and think to use the search function first...
And, for the record, I said the question was retarded, not the person asking it Perhaps don't take everything in life so seriously

I guess it depends what the remit of the forum is. I was of the opinion noobs were welcome. Often the search either takes or frankly isn't that effective.
Thankfully I'm thick-skinned, but I wonder how many people would now be afraid to post in fear of their question being called "retarded". Seems like something you should keep for the playground to me.
Actually, this forum was never originally designed for n00bs - quite the opposite! The side-affect of Android taking off means more have come here for information but very few are willing to learn/read/search and just want instant answer. This isn't the way forward and, as a n00b, you should come and read as much as possible first and only when truly stuck do you ask for help. Even rule number 1 of this very forum is to search:
1. Search before posting.
Use one of our search functions before posting or creating a new thread. Whether you have a question or just something new to share, it's very likely that someone has already asked that question or shared that news.

This.
We're here for development purposes. A side effect of ROM development unfortunately is noobs. Thats why we spent a lot of time making sticky threads in the hope that you can all draw from our knowledge and have enough info to not ask these sorts of questions.
That said, please see the "guides and info threads" link in my signature. You will learn a lot there and it would have prevented asking the question about having to reflash the image (which is unfortunately a really basic question)
I have done this through the OS, stock recovery, and through TWRP.. still showing 12.55GB as total space on a 32GB N5, any other ideas? Just getting restless on the wipes.
Also, in case it's needed, I was getting the system image error, flashed each command separately, and did the fastboot flash cache/userdata steps as well when I first flashed the system.img

I fixed my issue... reflashed all the files, and then before booting up fully, I booted into recovery and cleared cache and userdata, then ran everything properly.
Finally showing the proper size and even rooted and TWRP installed, no issues so far. Good luck!
I've been trying to do the same for hours, followed method 2 : [TUTORIAL] How to flash a factory image

you need to put it into cmd as "Fastboot boot recovery recovery.img" you're basically telling it to flash the recovery and it not knowing what is the recovery is why it's not working. Also, for the PWR Button + UP just keep pressing it, what I do is hold the power button and then press up and down till something happens. Give it a shot
Thanks playing with the button until something happens did the trick. Also for future reference formatting data after that can be fairly long

You weren't kidding about the length. Clearing cache took about 2 min. I am formatting my data now and I think it been working at it for 7 min now.
This form have had a lot of new members recently since Android has become more mainstream which means we are getting a lot more questions that have been answered multiple times. Most of the new people that come here are just looking for answers and don't spend the time to search. The best thing we can do as senior members is either tell them the answer they are looking for and showing them how to search or search for them and show them how you found the answer. That might help them in the future to not ask simple questions that have been answered before. There's no reason to be rude we were all noobs at one point. You gotta remember also a lot of the new members are younger kids and we all know how impatient younger kids are. So did give xda a good name the best thing we can do is help them out but also then find what they are looking for themselves by showing them how search works. It might take more time on our end but not much more time then berating them for not searching.
In most cases it only takes 5 or 10 seconds to answer the question anyway so you might as well just answer the question and tell them to search next time which will help them find their answer quicker. No need to be condescending.

What does this mean.i knew you.could update.a zip in recovery but.how do you flash in recovery like a boot animation for example
To use recovery to flash (another term for install) the file needs to be in zip format. Always make sure that the zip you're flashing is made for your phone and Android version. The best thing to do is make a nandroid backup, it's similar to a Windows restore point. It will save you if you flash something that doesn't work.
So do you use the update option to install the zip?
Sounds like you are referring to the stock recovery. Most zips here need to be flashed through a custom recovery like TWRP or philz.

You really need to take about 10 steps back. You've been posting in multiple threads with the same basic questions that should already be known before posting. Please start using Google (answers to all your questions can be found all over the Internet) and read, read, read. Here's the first link you should read: Understanding the Journey. Sorry, but XDA isn't about being hand-fed every answer. Thanks.
I agree with Ramer. When I first wanted to root and customize a phone I spent countless hours reading, and researching, and reading more before I even attempted anything. I then downloaded what I wanted and also what I needed to fix my phone in case something went wrong and made sure I knew how to fix it. I still do the same thing and it has been about 6 years since the first time I rooted a phone. Don't just dive in blindly, be prepared.

To the OP ......... you have not done enough reading or enough self-educating to understand the basics. Because of that deficit in your knowledge, you are struggling to get the gist of the help offered.
Instead, you chose the Troll road and flamed the person who tried to help you ......... not a good choice.......
So, this thread serves little to no purpose anymore......... That said

read this 3 times from start to finish before you start asking questions....itll help with most of your questions...also...
When your unlocking your bootloader using the "fastboot flashing unlock" command....after the system has booted.... boot back into fastboot and also run the "fastboot flashing unlock_critical” this makes this device nearly unbrickable.... please do it you won't regret it.
Next twrp is in boot.img with a/b devices..so if you flash twrp and want to root you have to reflash the stock boot.img of your rom before you flash magisk....if you don't you'll have a bootloop that gets you nowheres

Thanks for the link to the document. Didn't realize there are two partitions.
I'm sure this question has been answered before but I'll ask here again for the newbies.
If I root the device with Magisk but stay with the stock ROM, does the OTA updates work? If the updates do work, do I have to root each time after the update?
TIA.

They don't work if rooted, however I, and many others, have issues with the OTAs in general anyhow.
It's super quick to just fastboot flash the firmware files yourself anyhow (modify a boot.img beforehand with magisk), and then flash the modified boot.img at the end.
I got in on the Amazon deal...should be here next week. Will be coming from a Nexus6.
Quick question for a Prime Deal newbie. Do you have to unlock the bootloader if you are just side loading the OTA file? I know you have to in order to fastboot any images but I thought the ota file would be fine. No biggie if not just curious.
After another search it looks like you do not have unlock the bootloader just to flash the ota.
Really helpful and it definitely going to keep the rest of the section tidy!
Picked one up also. Coming from/still have a Pixel 2 xl and previously a first gen pixel, so I'm familiar with a/b slots. Not having a perm twrp suuuuuucks. I got my ph1 on Sept security patch and it's updated twice now to the Jun patch will that cause issues with any root or roming?
Also coming from the Nexus 6. Looking forward to this phone.
thank you for the heads up.

Feel free to message me if you have questions, I won't jump down your throat.

Thanks for the welcome everyone!!
Coming from a Nexus 6 running PureNexus. Phone is still rocking, but my goodness you should see how busted my screen is.
I'm excited to get the Essential set up and flash some ROM and camera goodies!

read this 3 times from start to finish before you start asking questions....itll help with most of your questions...also...

Thanks for the heads up, wonder if it will help the people who don't know which hole to put the sim card removal tool into.
[emoji23] I watched my brother keeps poking the microphone hole for like the 5th time until he figured it out. It is kind of a bad design imho tho.

This seems a welcome thread. I haven't tweaked Android for about 2½ years. From 2010 on I always had custom recovery and root and ROMs, but my last device (htc10) I didn't root, life got too busy.
Just got essential from Amazon, and trying to figure out what this AB slot stuff is is confusing the hell out of me. Also, this phone seems laggier than any device I've had, and I also just noticed a lot if the text is outlined with black, like on the LG get. Gotta get rid of that.
Sorry if this is the wrong place for those comments.
If anyone could give an explanation to what the AB slot is, to someone who is already pretty familiar with using custom recoveries, and understanding the partions (to a degree), I'd super appreciate it.
Again, I've been away from xda and customizing Android for about 3 years.
Anyone else feeling like this device isn't quite what they hoped? I always saw it at sprint stores and couldn't put it down. Now it's in my hand, doesn't seem so great. Think my htc10 is better, but maybe I'm missing how to make it great.
I hope this is in the right place.

you can't beat it for $250, but I think I'm getting the OnePlus 6T or OnePlus 7 when it comes out.
installing TWRP and customs roms is such a chore on this device. I had AOSiP installed...but for some reason which I couldn't explain, it didn't feel like AOSiP on my Nexus 6P or OnePlus5 (that I just gave to my mom). Substratum worked...Magisk worked. But something didn't feel right. If I'm going to have to be on a stock ROM, I'd rather be on OxygenOS with its additional customizations.
only one of my 9 USB-C to USB-A cables seem to work for file transfer AND fastboot AND charging. It also happens to be the shortest cable I have.
See this weirdness where text is surrounded by black outline? That happened on LG g stock rom. It was fixed. Is a custom rom only way to fix this on ph1. ? Much thanks.

I think your phone high contrast text mode is on. Uncheck that under accessibility

I am with ya on that...I started with Samsung devices, So using Odin for flashing was my cup of Tea. The Nexus6 was my first device using Fastboot, but I ended up using Wug's toolkit most of the time.
From what I gather the A/B slot partitions are the same thing. You basically have a kernel and ramdisk on both partitions. The ramdisk is now your recovery. You just have to make sure when you flash anything, it's to the active partition. The point of A/B slots is so Android can install upgrades seamlessly while still running by installing them to the inactive partition. Click the link in the OP, it explains things pretty well.
I have been pretty happy with the PH-1 so far. I really like the form factor and the notch hasn't bothered my at all. Coming from Note 3/4 and the 6P which was super easy to flash by the extra steps on the Essential don't seem to bad. Sucks that you need a computer most times to flash but not the end of the world.
I haven't flashed a custom ROM yet but I did bump to the P preview for a day or two and then back to stock with EX and Magisk. No issues there but I'm comfortable with ADB and fastboot. No issues with various cables as well whatever I used on my 6P seem fine for this phone as far as charging, adb and file transfers go.
Overall pretty happy.
