Hi there,
Ever since I started using Android, my phones have always been HTC (I'm on my third since the HTC Hero and I currently own an HTC One M7), I'm an HTC fanboy, I won't deny that. But I need a new phone now and cannot wait for new phones to be released in 2016, unfortunately... As such I'm looking at the Z5 as the only viable alternative for my liking. But I have a few doubts which are giving me second thoughts about this phone:
Most reviews praised the camera quality, saying it was one of the best ever. Looking at this forum, it doesn't like that. I really wanted a phone with a good camera. The M7 doesn't have one that good, I'm sure the Z5 has one better. But is it that much better? Like light and day? Is the camera on the Z5 really worth it?
Is it possible to "convert" the Z5 to a "Google device"? Meaning, install a ROM as close as possible to AOSP (do we have one for the Z5?) and get OTA updates from Google or is this not possible with the Z5? I know Sony now has a really clean and similar ROM to default Android, but I really wanted the original on the Z5 and get OTA updates.
Previous point takes me to this one... I've read that by unlocking the bootloader we lose X-Reality and other things that Sony added that make this phone much better. Is this really the case and there's no idea to unlock the bootloader, root it, install a new ROM and still have all those nice things from Sony?
To finish, are the heating issues really not a problem with the Z5? I know the CPU is under-clocked, but I just want to be sure...

The problem with reviews is people really only write about the bad and there will be bad with any phone. I really don't have any problems with heat or the camera. At this time root on locked bootloader is not possible but it will come somewhen ☺

there is no google stock rom available right now. only stock.not even stock based yet. maybe cyanogenmod will be available in the future but nothing for sure,so if you really want a google rom now,this phone isnt for you,but i think sony is close to stock with some nice changes. as for the bootloader,you can unlock it and you can now restore the lost features that you lost. this is only on stock though.etc you wont have xreallity on google rom, if available somewhen.heating is normal , as other phones too for me.

The Z5 isn't bad at all and I enjoy using mine despite the fact that we're still on Lollipop 5 months after Marshmallow release (Honestly, I'm not that impressed with the official Sony firmware... many hiccups here and there Sony doesn't judge important to fix it seems). It's not a bad phone, but I regret my choice. I should have bought a Nexus 6P.
The biggest issue I have with the Z5: The software is OK at best: it doesn't live up to my expectation and it doesn't bring justice to the excellent hardware. That phone SHOULDN'T have slow downs, it shouldn't stutter and the UI shouldn't have lag spikes. If my OnePlus One (less powerful) gave me a perfectly smooth experience, the Z5 should too. It's much more powerful... I blame the Sony ROM for that, and I hope they'll provide us with a better ROM (Marshmallow). The Lollipop ROM has issues.

That's not the reason. I didn't bought the M8 nor the M9 for the same reasons I won't buy the Z5. They simply don't justify the price tag with all the problems they have, not worth my money. Simple as that.
I had the 6p, now the z5. I never regreat the switch. The build quality on the 6p, was horrid. I felt like it would bend from looking at it wrong. So I sold it for the z5, and no regreats.
I also use the jack for music allot. The sound on the z5, is just way better.
I have no problems with heat, but I play no games. I also like the camera.

I have the M8 and after a week with Z5 I've decided that I'm going to sell the Z5. It's just not that good.

You see what you want to see. As a Z5 owner, I can say its worth every penny I spent on it. Hasn't failed me so far, and except probably for the not-so-good battery life, I don't have any complaints.
Just because it's a good phone for you and you don't have any complaints, doesn't mean it's good for everyone else. I didn't come here bash the Z5 and I haven't done so (as far as I can tell), so why are you bashing on my decision? I've read the "is it worth the money?" thread from top to bottom, every single post. I was just not convinced to give way +500€ for this phone, deal with it. Yes, the Z5 has many great things about it, it's a very nice phone and much better than my current M7, but the bad things about it, just don't make it worth for me.

In my case, I had a One M7 which I dropped in water and went completely dead - motherboard I suppose. I loved it. I then switched to a new Z3+, last July. Waterproof, you know? It had hiccups, warming up, camera hangs, even UI hangs. Last Sunday - dropped in the fjord, 75 m deep.
I am now on a new Z5 (4th day today), which I got for personal prefs to waterproof (I go fishing a lot) and design. I am more than happy with this one:
- superb design
- amazing stereo surround sound
- 23M camera, 4k, good quality on low light or even dark
- no heating at all
- very quick charging for over 5h SOT, 45% display
- superb handy original smart cover (I went for green)
- I like the Sony stock roms - better contacts handling, nice home screen, themes etc.
From what you describe (and the replies you got) we are mostly disappointed by the Android versions and included bugs, not by the devices (no matter which brand).
As for camera hardware, Ithink this time Sony made it right. (I still remember how much I hated the M7 taking pics in low light - I always got a magenta colour on top! that was a hardware bug they could never fix after release).
All in all, I wouldn't choose another brand. So it's up to you what weights more in taking the decision. Good luck!

Coming from same m7 to z5, I think there are reasons still for you to like this phone. Ideally, as I did myself, you'll test it out for a few days and decide for yourself.
Myself, I have decided to keep it.
That being said, we're all aware there's no perfect device, however there's the good enough for 1-2 years for the scenario you use it most device. If the nexus 6p had a slightly smaller brother at around 5" that would've been my perfect device. So obvious second choice for me was z5. If you can live with its size, and, as I also tested a lil bit that device, I'd say, without a case, 6p feels really good in hands, I'd strongly recommend it.
Coming back to z5.
The only thing you might miss about your m7 are its speakers. With that respect though, I guess it's hard to find another phone today, other than waiting for another HTC phone that is. Z5s camera app is also a bit slowlier to open up, it's faster once in ram.
Otherwise, everything about z5 is better or much better than old m7, including camera, responsiveness, much faster browsing, Bluetooth range and sound quality is better, Wi-Fi range also wider. Overall experience, at least for me, irl meets and even exceeds my expectations. Z5 even comes with a tap the screen to wake feature! Awesome.
The only moot point is the battery life, only marginally better, I'm afraid. I am almost certain that the biggest culprit is the famous cell standby lollipop issue, however didn't root yet to confirm.
That and hopes for better manual controls in camera app is why many impatiently await the mm update, however, I advise against buying in the hopes a software update will fix or improve on anything..that is, buy this phone if you like it the way it is today.
Of course, if you could wait for our opinions here after the update, that should help you with your decision.

I didn't bash you personally, I just said that "you see what you want to see" which basically means that all of us have our biases. I've liked the Z series from the Z1 so to me, going to the Z5 has been a good upgrade from my point of view, and I'll take it over other phones out there (note: I am not saying that the Z5 is better, I just prefer Xperia line-up over others)
If you already read the "is it worth it?" thread from before and already had an inkling that it wasn't worth it, then why even bother asking for others opinion on our Z5s then bashing us when we share that we don't have any complaints?
Where in that post did I attack you for not choosing the Z5? Did I say "hurr durr then go back to your M7 or whatever"? No I did not, because I respect other people's decisions and paraphrasing your answer, what works for me might not work for other people.
I just gave my opinion simple as that. No need to get defensive about it.

I can get a 16gb nexus 5 and LG G2 base model for around the same price (give or take 20 dollars) Which one would you choose? My concern about the nexus 5 is its battery life, which the G2 is great at.

Between the two at this exact moment, I'd take the LG G2 personally because battery life is quite important to me in a portable device of most any kind. Reviews show it has fantastic battery life (meaning the G2) and I doubt seriously - considering the size of the battery in the Nexus 5 - that the Nexus 5 will get anywhere near what the G2 is proving quite capable of.
So, for me the LG G2 would be a no-brainer since we know KitKat will be showing up quite soon since the source is available - we just had a 4.4 build created by houstonn for the LGOG which I happen to have, it's mostly functional but I'm sure soon enough it will be 100% to go.

Agreed. If battery is your main concern and the price is similar, I would choose the G2. Battery isn't that important to me though. All I really need from a phone is a full average day on a single charge and I think I will get that from the N5. I get a full day with my N4 on most days, but I run it conservatively.
I have a G2 now, and I get 2-3 days with the G2 and I get 1-2 days with the Note 3.

Another possible benefit to the G2 is that has Audience's Earsmart noise cancellation chip. It remains to be seen if the Nexus 5 will have it, but since it would impose extra licensing fees, I'm guessing it's more likely than not that the Nexus 5 won't have it (Google has to cut corners somewhere, to sell the Nexus 5 for a low price).
Audience's noise cancellation chip is by far the best noise cancellation out there. Much better than Qualcomm's native solution Fluence (which the Nexus 4 uses). The Nexus One had the Audience chip and was one of the first phones to use it. I really miss that. I could be in super loud environments and people thought I was at home. The Nexus 4 has been a huge step down in this respect. After the Nexus One, the iPhone 4 used the Audience chip (and of course everyone acted like Apple invented noise cancellation, even though they were late comers to the game). In any case, it got much praise on the iPhone 4. But it has been dropped from the iPhone 5 for Apple's own in house solution and the (very few) critics how pay attention to this have pointed out that it's much worse. These days for the most part it's only Samsung that consistently uses the Audience chip in its top tier phones.
Anyway, I care a lot about call quality, so I'd really like the have the Audience chip again. I'm still waiting to see if it's in the Nexus 5. But if I had to decide now, without knowing, that would definitely be a feature pulling me toward the G2 instead.
I would take the G2 because of the battery life and camera performance ... and I'm saying this while I bought the nexus 5

I had both and I'd recommend the Nexus 5 any second. KitKat runs super smooth and I love the looks! I hate the glossy plastic on the G2 and I totally love the soft silky back of the N5. I have been touching it nonstop for the last hour. I might need professional help.

+1 in a couple weeks, there'll be some announcement where this cpu is better than etc etc. Hardware gets better all the time but software more or less stays the same and that's what we as users can compete on. Not on the hardware because something will be better in a matter of weeks / months etc.
If having a good community in terms of rom and kernels as well as receiving the newest and latest android on a stock android experience matters to you then a nexus phone is a no Brainer.

/edit: but it seems BATTERY seems ok from One can read from others. but be careful with that Information! people are still hyped to the Max with the new device the may get too euphoric about it.
Hard decision but honestly I got burned hard by the Optimus 2X and anyone else who owned that phone would likely agree with me, it was a solid phone but the software support was horrendous (not helped by Nvidia...). The only reason I got the Nexus 4 was the fact it was made by LG which make QUALITY hardware but lack a large software dev team so as the Nexus is done by Google it was a very easy decision . I wouldnt leave the Nexus series so long as it stays at the price point of £300 as the developer community alone is amazing, so many talented developers working on one device we would never get left in the dark.
The G2 is a better device interms of battery life but for me the device size definitely goes past the perfect spot which is the N4 and N5 (width is important!). Would I have paid extra if the N5 had a stepped battery in it, of course I would as I do want longer battery life but I think the N5 will meet my requirement now as its better than the N4! I think the decider for me if they were the same price would be the developer community as I would go for the one with the biggest following, if the G2 can keep up with the N5 in terms of custom rom android versions then it would be fine and I would be tempted but still would need to hold it in the hand as I think its too wide.
Tough call! Would wait till Jan before deciding on the community personally.
I would get Nexus 5. I don't use my phone 8 hours a day and I don't live in the woods so I have access to the charger most of the time.

Honestly, after Google said they stopped supporting the Galaxy Nexus I'm not that optimistic either. But it doesn't matter to me since this is a Nexus.

possibly because of Qualcomm being the cpu we may get Lucky to get One Last Update after that 18 month.
only time will tell.

Google did say the reason that the Gnex will no longer get updates... Im not a fortune teller but I think Qualcomm will survive more than 18 months.
Either way, once I see that the N5 will stop getting updates, that will be the moment when I root my phone.

And if its because TI is no longer making the chips, that's not convincing, while I'm no developer, TI OMAP chips are much more open than Qualcomm (which is why they are found in a lot of other opensource linux devices) so even if Google receives no help from TI it should still be easier to release KitKat for it than with a Qualcomm device having to deal with more proprietary codes (one of the reason a Nexus 7 factory image was temporary pulled).

Exactly - the reason for the lack of a 4.4 update for the Galaxy Nexus is because TI basically pulled out of ARM chip making and they won't provide support to Google so Google has no choice but to pull out of any potential updates for that particular device.
In time I'm sure you'll see a 4.4+ ROM appear soon enough for the Galaxy Nexus. Hell, if old devices like the Galaxy S can run 4.3 (and it does, surprisingly well, probably will run 4.4 too without a problem) you can be positive that 4.4 will make it's way to the Galaxy Nexus soon enough.
But it's not Google that pulled the plug for that update, it was Texas Instruments...

The waterproofing of the S5 is nice but inability to root is disheartening, the M8 is nice but I'm not sure about it.

I am moving to Sony Z2 for waterproof and style. Its slick lines just make it look like art.
I find the M8 good looking from the front but ugly from the side and back. Something about its big sloppy curved back doesnt sit right with me. The phone just looks fat and bulky.
S5 really does seem like the standout device this year. But I have never wanted what everyone else has. Plus I find it bland looking.

What about the M8 aren't you sure about? Its what I picked up last week, and its a fabulous phone.

The build quality of the M8 simply blows the GS5 out of the water.
The only "pros" I see on the GS5 side are:
- the waterproofing (M8 is still water resistant, just not meant to be completely submerged)
- better photos in good lighting (mainly outdoors, and how much this matter is going to depend on how you use your phone most often)
- much bigger market share and therefore larger community (but with the bootloader so locked down, how much does this matter?)
Side note: I haven't been keeping up with the GS5 root status, so I decided to hop over there and just take a peek before harping on the issue too much (to avoid spreading any possible misinformation). I changed my contract to the no-contract plan AT&T has now and save a lot of money on our bill. On the other hand, I'm stuck with this phone until something worth buying off-contract comes along. Not that it's a bad phone. I just installed a new battery and brand new white housing I got off ebay for under $25 bucks total and it looks and works like new! (better than new with CM11 and some overclocking) Every new phone coming out lately is too big. All 5+ inch screens and I can barely hold this phone with one hand as it is. Oh well, maybe the new Nexus will be reasonably sized.

I had my HOXL for just over a year, thinking of installing the HOX+ 2100mAh I grabbed a while ago.
I still believe the HOXL is a beautiful and capable device (for my needs anyways). Agree that nothing is very convincing at the moment
Could've gone for One (M7) when I got my Evita, many things I didn't like, and definitely the gap increased with M8, it seems after many years with hTC I am going to try something else, maybe until they come back to their senses
As for the size, was in shop the other day and compared my Evita to LG G2, the later is barley taller by 2 mm and wider by 1 mm, 14 g heavier but same thickness, it packs a 5.2" screen with thin bezel, just this is amazing, faster CPU 2. 2 and double ram, whooping 3000 mAh battery, There is the matter of back volume rocker and power button, which I was kinda sceptical to, but wen I tried the phone in my hand I was actually surprised it might be more ergonomical and less finger stretchy than Evita.
Not in a rush, wil wait and see what the rest of year 2014 has to offer.

But the scary thing is...will the devs be able to unlock the bootloader or are the days of seeing talented devs rolling out amazing ROMs and kernals coming to an end?

Personally If I go for it I'll be satisfied with possibility to root and flash custom recovery, both of which didn't seem to be an issue with G2. This should be sufficient for flashing custom roms and kernels. There is good activity in G2 forums though.
I got my Evita last year, March 2013. It's still working ok, no real problems. I'm bothered that basically it's been abandoned by HTC though. I'd really like Kitkat, to use 4.4 only stuff like Google Camera etc.
I'd consider buying something else, but I've found the Evita too large and now all new phones are pretty much larger. I'm checking out buying the Moto G but sadly it's very hard to find the 16gb variant in Canada. I'm also interested in what the Moto X+1 turns out to be...
I'm hoping to get an invite for the oneplus one phone. If I get that, I will surely be purchasing it. if I dont get one before the next nexus (if there is one,) I will be purchasing a nexus. I'm also thinking about going to t-mob no contract. If I happen to renew my att contract, which I am unsure if I want to do, I will be jumping for the g3.
My earspeaker pretty much went out and gf dropped phone a few too many times so I took advantage of the $0.00 total for the LG G2 online at www.att.com the HTC One m7 is also $0.00 at Best Buy but I really wanted the updated processor. I really wanted the m8 or OnePlus One or maybe even the G3 when it arrives but Im too low on income.
Today I rooted it and was about to flash recovery but power went out. Made me super pissed. I was also low level formatting a hard drive at the same time so now I have to start that process over again.
I'd really like to play around with a Sony phone.
I see so many mixed reviews on Sony phones. On the surface they're incredible, the Z2 has amazing hardware, but I've seen heaps of reports of them heating up so much that the screen cracks. Among other faults. And Sony blames the consumer instantly when there's physical damage, no matter what the cause, which I guess I can understand because there's just no way to prove what caused it. But, you'd think after so many reports they might click.

Well, I picked up an M8 and while I'm blown away at how incredible it is, I'm sorely going to miss tinkering on the Evita. I have no intention of getting rid of it though. The Evita was my first smart phone to really get the most out of. I think I flashed and tried pretty much every Rom and Mod worth using in this forum. I'll still hang out occasionally. Thanks for the good times and making the phone 10 times better.
As the title asks: has anyone here got the phone yet? What are your thoughts on it? I got mine yesterday. So far, I'm impressed yet slightly bored due to the lack of new features.
The phone itself is amazing, quick and beautiful. The fingerprint scanner is fast, the phone is comfortable to hold but lacks anything exciting from it!

Have you tested Displayport Alt? It's part of the USB 3.1 standard and any USB-C to HDMI/Display Port adapter should work, even if it's branded for a laptop for a laptop.

No I haven't tried that actually. I'll have to look it up and see if I can try it! I'll report back if I manage.
My immediate reaction is, I wish this thing was in the omnibalance design. It is too chunky for me, I don't like the curve of the back which is really quite thick in the middle. Very slippy as well, slips all over the place..
It is very quick, the screen is very nice and as usual, for me anyway, battery life is very good.....darn it, if only the XZ2 was a bigger screened version of the XZ1 form factor.
This phone needs a case - no doubt about it - it could be very slippery otherwise.
I've come from the Pixel 2 XL (due to Google's inability to code updates properly; luckily they refunded me even after 5 months!) - the XZ2 certainly is bigger and heavier but it fits better in my pocket...
There were nice things Google had done to Android that improves the user experience that the Sony like others will not have. Nothing functionally different just a bit 'dull' in terms of experience.
The camera of the XZ2 is not up to Pixel 2 standards but I've yet to play with it properly.
I like the XZ2 - I hope I feel this way in six months time.

I agree with the phone being slippery! I can't even hold it between my shoulder and ear without it wanting to fall within seconds! Also needs a screen protector which I've had no luck finding.
As for the form factor, it doesn't seem half bad in all honesty. I come from the HTC 10 so for me it feels nice to hold and I personally like the curve on the back!

+1 for dull. That's the first thought I had after setting it up. I want to root/unlock the bootloader so I can put xposed on it for customisation but I don't want to lose the DRM keys either.
Love it! I came from Z3... Fast, good battery life in my opinion. Nice screen, doesn't feel that thick to me. The only thing I dislike is how slippery it is. Bought a Qi charger that I put it on first night I had it. Looked like It was laying still. 20 minutes later it woke me up when it had slid off and hit the floor ? it survived, but I instantly ordered a case for it.
I will charge it on the floor for now ?

You are right the phone is a little boring but that's not a bad thing.. As it works as expected.
I got the s9 returned it now as couldn't make phone calls with it (a highly reported bug)
Also Samsung blocked call recording apps

Great phone, snapy, it boots like a beast, camera is awesome and i think i will get used to the shape, it feels ok in hand, nice UI, bu unfortunately after i got it i realized botom speaker is making strange noises, allmost unberable, so i bring it back for exchange tomorrow, bought in Slovenia, seal was broke, so watch out for that

After couple of updates, reboots and full night charge speakers settled, it works o.k. I am buffled... I had an apointment today for immediate phone exchange but will cancel it leter, cause i cant be sure if that was software related between updates.
I tried so hard today in morning, max loudness and shaking etc, it performed flawlessly... So i keep it, if error reocurs i still have waranty ?

Impossible to use without cover, i buyed a cover from amazon. For tempered glass i advice brotect airglass, it's the only with no halo and no brightness lost

Only trouble for me with pixel us that call recording does not work on it otherwise I would have got one
After a few days of use, the phone is a solid choice.
Striking a good balance with a decent screen size & still manageable to use one-handed.
The display is plenty bright , even in sunlight outdoors, colors are excellent, right up there with the best AMOLED displays on the market.
Sound from the FF Dual speakers is plenty voluminous, quality is there as well, tweak with your music/equalizer app of choice or, as I do, use what's on board.
The addition of wireless charging is welcome, THX Sony!

I'd prefer a front or side-mounted FPR, but, use of the FPR is waaay down on my list of desired features, I can take or leave it, regardless of position, or, missing altogether.

My 2¢ on the subject:
If you're employed/in-school, or otherwise engaged in activities that take priority over using your phone full time, odds are you can make it 1.5-2 days between charges on any phone. If you have more free time than that, YMWV.
No phone is perfect & this one, while I think is a keeper, has a few areas in need of improvement.
1) No 3.5 mm jack. While this is of no consequence to me, nevertheless, it was a boneheaded decision to drop the option, 'nuff said.
2) It's gotta be the slickest (read:SLIPPERY) phone I've ever used. If you're gonna use a case, this is moot, but, when I'm @ home, I like to shed the case for a more comfortable grip. The fit in hand is perfect, but, I do wish Sony woulda/coulda done something with the back glass to ensure a more secure grip. (Textured glass, a la Sandstone finish, just spit-ballin' here).
3) The super-sized vibration motor is, IMHO, total nonsense. The space it occupies would have been better utilized for the MIA 3.5 mm jack, larger battery, an I-R Blaster.
One or all of these would be welcome, compared to the gimmicky vibration motor.
4) No 6GB RAM option Stateside (possibly in other markets as well,worth looking into before buying).
I bought a 6GB RAM model on Swappa, but, having the different RAM versions, especially in the price range, is a head-scratcher.
Overall, a very nice phone for every day use. As for recent offerings (six months or so), I've used the following:

I was going to send it back after a few days but it is growing on me, the screen is really really nice, with good deep blacks and superb brightness and clarity (it is hard to believe it is not a higher resolution), it is very fast and it has a very premium feel (if a little slippy). I also have the XZ1 and prefer the form factor of the XZ1 but the XZ2 has more going for it as an overall package. Some online reviews have been quite dismissive at times of this phone but it does have something, a bit of character?
Personally, I'd never buy a Samsung for a lot of reasons and I suppose you could call me a bit of a Sony fanboy in that I've owned lots of them down the years. This is the best Sony phone for a good long while, a great all rounder.
Very pleased with this one.

I currently own a HTC 10, and i have it since 3 years. I plan to get a new phone, and i can't decide which one. I was thinking of U12+, but i can't try one as it does not exist on any electronic market physically.
Do you recommend HTC U12+ on 2019? What are your experiences? Is it still fast after new updates?
How are the side buttons? I am worried most about those.

It's a good phone, but there are better choices. It's all about how much you want to spend and strangely, the U12+ is not significantly dropping in price.
The button issue has been largely solved directly after release, though there could be points where they are unresponsive, likely to block out erroneous touches when there's extended periods of pressure on them, like in a case.
The cameras are still among the best you can get and that, imo, is why you would buy this now. GCam makes it better, but doesn't work on the tele lens. I mostly use the stock app, as it works really well.
As for sound quality, it's tops, but one needs to deal with the USBc issues that are not unique to HTC. The fact thst there's no wireless charging makes the phone rather annoying at points. If I were buying and we're not talking budget, I'd just spend 900 Euros on a Snapdragon S10 5g.
The s9 plus might be a better option if you want better update support and wireless charging and a headphone jack. This is at the expense of cameras not as good as the u12+.
I've done your step one year ago and if my HTC 10 lasted longer I would do it now.
I really miss the alu body of my HTC 10. I don't use any covers and this glass back is not for me, but it's okay.
I can recommend the U12+. It's really fast and I don't have any negative aspect. Maybe the buttons. Sometimes they are a bit tricky.
The UI of the HTC phones is really good and I hope that HTC decides to launch new phones in the future. Don't want to change the brand

Well, the phone is really nicely manufactured, seems robust and feels great in hand (apart from being slippery). Question is whether its non-trendy look bothers you.
As for the side buttons, I've never had any problems with them. I really like the firm sensation of touching them.
However, I can't say a good word about tapping the pressure sensitive sides. It either doesn't work or works when not intended.
Squeezing works 90% right, sometimes getting stuck and not reacting to pressing really hard. In such cases I need to put down the phone and grab it again.
For me, the worst part is the software support. The Pie update was a joke, the security updates were a joke and I don't expect to see Android 10 on that phone. If you want new features in OTAs, then don't consider this phone.
All in all, I feel like there are better choices but coming with some trade-offs. I wouldn't have bought it again and settled for sth else, maybe hardware-wise worse but with better support.

Depends on the price you find, it's still a top-notch phone a year on, that's a testament to HTC's engineering team.
The phone was very fast already and now it's even faster with Pie, at least based on my past day so far. Battery life is now phenomenal with Pie, yesterday I got it off the charger around 7AM and after a regular day - w/ constant but medium or more use - I still had 15% after midnight. Also, support was great, they replaced my broken glass in 3-4 weeks.
Before the Huawei-mess I'd have said the P30 Pro is a better choice, mainly due to its camera, but with the current uncertain future of Huawei and the lower price of the U12+ I'd just buy this again.

I was in the same boat a few weeks ago and finally pulled the trigger on a slightly used HTC U12+ for $430. It's a big upgrade over the HTC 10 and good value at that price but I wouldn't recommend it. The buttons are a pain, poor software support from HTC, limited developer support on sites such as xda, and edge sense is more likely to annoy you with false initiations than provide you with any sort of meaningful usability.
If only i would had the chance to have check the phone physically, that would have been perfect.
I am really worried about the side buttons. And i cant understand how HTC have done this.

I bought my U12+ this year for around 420USD, brand new. This is the current selling price in Southeast Asia for the 128gb version.
If you're an HTC fan, I will definitely recommend you to buy this but there are so many options out there worth your money.
I am kind of an HTC fan. I had Htc Mega as my first device, which was runnin Windows Mobile.
Later HTC One M8, which was a great device and i had it for 3 years.
Now i am using HTC 10, which is also a great phone with a good built quality.
I planning to change the device mainly for speed and better camera.

I was also considering Huawei Mate 20 Pro, but after a brief search, i see that people are complaining about the screen problems. Especially that the screen turns green after a while.
Same goes for LG phones. Screen ghosting seems a standard issue.
Never liked Samsung, without any reason, just like that
I love the quality of HTC built phones. I wish that they launch a new flagship.

Camera is awesome especially compared to anything in its price range, it's a steal for the ~$400 others mentioned here.

If for the cameras, then you are making a good decision. I photograph professionally and use my U12+ for light carry duties and have had numerous publications with it.

If you haven't already bought it, I suggest you don't.
While it's a great phone at its price... It will lack longevity.
The phone is around 1.5 years old now - And HTC is already slow with software updates... Android 10 support on it is currently a gamble.
The HTC version of Android is also lacking in some key functionality compared to AOSP - Most notably lack of Navigation Gestures, lack of new Multitasking/Recent Apps screen, No "Users" support.
The best features of the phone truly are its audio quality and its camera quality. Everything else is on par with the competition, making it a great phone at its price.
But its software is lacking and its longevity is questionably.
Better yet, if you don't care about the camera, you could buy a much cheaper phone which doesn't have as good audio, but better software support and spend the difference in a pair of good headphones, and/or a set of bluetooth speakers.
Such as OnePlus, Xiaomi, Nokia, Oppo etc...
If you do care about the camera, you're stuck with Huawei and Xiaomi to get cheaper phones. Though OnePlus 7 Pro makes an appearance in DxOMark's top 5.
The OP7Pro in fact is probably the best recommendation I have for you at this moment in time, in the UK retail price is £649 for the 6GB / 128GB configuration.
That is £50 cheaper than HTC u12+ original launch price, but with a better screen, better camera, better processor, better software support.... Who cares is audio is worse, buy a decent pair of bluetooth headphone and loudspeaker and you've got a phone for the next 4 years.

How much did it cost to replace the glass? Mine's shattered and I've heard it's really expensive. Can't decide if I should repair or just buy a cheap phone

Great choice!!!!! I never have any issues with the buttons and my 12 Is the greatest phone ever HTC has the best android skin by far you don't need the new navigation bar! You couldn't have made a better decision!!!!

Attention where you have repaired! the best choice is direct from HTC! I had a screen replaced by a reputable repairer and back more sound! back again there the sound is OK, but the screen badly fixed and the edge is cracking! Expense of 300 € for nothing !!!

In the other hand the camera is not good enough and it's quite important for me.

Rog 5 is great!!
ROG Phone 5 is great if you are heavy into gaming, need the added battery to still use GPS, and don't mind a few missed notifications or emails in the background.
OnePlus is better if you want to stay current on the latest software updates and security improvements, prefer a wider selection of or more affordable accessories, and value a larger community for support or development.
Further reading:
The ROG Phone 5 packages security updates into the firmware versions, so they are not released separately. This means they are a bit slower to arrive and tend to skip incremental versions.
GPS and 5G are expensive on your battery life and despite having a rather large battery and quick charging, gaming needs most of it. A lot of the ROG Phone 5 features for gaming include disabling background tasks and minimizing network traffic, which are hard to do if you actually need those.

No. You can improve the perceptual quality, but the (lens) resolution won't actually change. It was silly to add that AR feature to Armory Crate knowing they cut corners on the camera because it only made it more obvious.

Personally I had the same dilema, I picked the rog phone 5. No regrets so far. The battery is so much better, I can make it last 2-3 days on a single charge. The screen is amazing. Speakers are literally among the best speakers on a smartphone, possibly THE best. Software is amazing too. I had an OP3T before and I loved oxygen OS more than stock android, unfortunately OnePlus is going in a different direction. Thanks to the cooling, performance is pretty darn great too, beats the OnePlus any day . ZenUI has almost all features of oxygen os and MORE. Design is pretty cool, and so is the camera if I'm being honest. Here's some photos that I took a couple of days back. Not really a huge sample but perhaps it'll help you. No editing or retouching was done.
After looking a bit deeper, it appears the OnePlus 9 camera is 50MP. Reviews keep saying how amazing it is, but its still a budget lens.

No no, absolutely zero tinkering. Tried it using default settings. I took them in 64MP but had to downscale as XDA wasn't accepting higher resolutions. More than a couple of people have remarked on the camera quality so you should be perfectly fine in that regard.
Also btw, Asus actually won the MKBHD blind camera test of 2020 so camera quality wouldn't be an issue. The Sony sensor here is really good, I can confirm.

But the ZenFone 7 pro (the winner) doesn't have the same camera does it? At least my research revealed those are different one.

I found out that the Sony IMX686 sensor is the sensor in the Zenfone 7 and also in the rogphone 5
It's a pretty decent sensor.
The issue is that I have kids and when I taking a pictures ia can't guarantee that they will stand still .
About night shot , must of my photos is in daylight or indoor so almost no nightshots in my case.
I would say if you really want decent photos - get neither of them and buy something that has a focus on cameras.
Sources told me OnePlus never had such a decent image quality (Cannot say for myself, I have a OnePlus but I could not care less about image quality nor do I even recognize "high/good" quality as good quality because they mostly look ugly to me compared to "lower" quality)
However if it's only between those two I would say buy an Asus - take some pictures and return it in case the quality is not good enough for you or take a look at reviews with their photos and decide if that's enough.

They are still smartphones. you can call with them, chat with your friends/family and so on. Even GPS works and doesn't drain more battery than on average phones.
The only thing that might matter are updates.
If you care much about those things OP is better. It all depends on your needs and requirements. For example I don't care about manufacturer updates. The last one I installed was about 2012 before I started to flash my phones.

Honestly I'm flashing my devices like crazy so OTA is not big deal for me .
I'm really disappointed with OP 8 can feel that they go to a very bad way oxygen OS have plenty of bugs and the product feels to me like not completed product.
Let's say that you have the option to choose any smartphone in the world.

Well... I'm not the best choice to answer your question. In my opinions notches, punch holes, curved displays and no bezels are disgusting.
I hate none symmetrical phones so all those are totally a no go for me. Plus I mostly have my phone in my hands when I use it so small bezels / curved displays result in faulty touch recognitions.
That being said most phones in the world are nothing for me. Out of those I care about power and performance because I buy my phones for 4/5 years. An outdated chipset / lesser power might be a pain in the ass in 3 years when I still want to use chrome with my 30 tabs, play games simultaneously and write messages between loading screens by switching apps in <1s.
So currently my choice is the Asus cause it fulfills nearly all my criteria. If OnePlus had no Notches/Punch holes + a larger battery I would take those. I considered many other phones but all of them either look not so good and are weaker compared to Asus. Funfact: Buying a new Smartphone usually takes me around 4/5 months every 4/5 years
Shame Samsung isn't an option. The Note 20 Ultra takes great photos. The pinhole camera is a silly design, but at least they centered it. The raised camera lens is awkward, but easily fixed with a case.
I've taken pictures of people flying past that look like they stopped to pose. Samsung makes good cameras, so you may still want the lens inside someone else's shell.
Sometimes someone makes bad experiences with certain brands. Let it be customer support or defective devices.
I would never buy a Samsung device for myself as well because no other brand caused me so much trouble in the past. Let it be unlocking the bootloader or other related things.

Fundamentally, the internals are only one of a couple sets each generation. Even the software and entire support staff are changed out. You may not want to support Samsung, but you did. Guess who made your display panel?
I never said I don't want to support or harm them. I know many use their panels.
It's the same for OLED TVs and LG.
Of course they may also change the software but I rooted several Samsung devices and except for my very first one (Galaxy s1) all of them were not as easy as OnePlus devices or Nexus.
It's a combination of many things together that disappointed me or friends - not only with phones It's the same with other devices. (I had to work with the software of their TV devices once and it was a pain in the ass compared to LG WebOS or Sony to make my software running).
I'm open to give them a chance again when I think it will become better (I highly doubt this will ever be the case since I guess I'm not their peer group) but until that day I won't buy devices directly from Samsung.
I don't just say "it's trash" for no reason or "hate" them or whatever... I keep in touch with the company and inform me about their products but mostly they don't suit my requirements
