I've got 10.46 gigs used on this thing, and that's with only a couple of downloaded apps. It's the 8013 variant, and I've had it rooted since the day I bought it. I've installed and uninstalled a couple of ROMS on it since then as well. The problem I'm having is not having any free space for anything anymore. When I go into Root Explorer I've got all these directories pointing to the same files. Root/Sdcard, Root/storage/emulated/0, Root/storage/emulated/legacy, Root/storage/sdcard0.
If I go into settings it says I've got 6.51 gigs of miscellaneous files, but when I open it to see what is there it only shows a couple hundred megs worth.
Back to Root Explorer. ... If I delete a file in one directory. It's gone in all the rest. I think the 0, and legacy folders are for different users. As far as the rest. I'm not sure. So I guess my question is are these all just links to to the same place? And if so, what is taking up so much space on my SD? And Is there a way to re-partition the storage?
Never mind FIXED.
Sorry for wasting space on xda. I decided go into TWRP and format the data. I lost everything, but it wasn't much to begin with. I now have 514.51 megs used, and 11.23 gigs free. I guess there was just a bunch of cap left over from old apps and roms. Thank you.

I just recently tried to upgrade my SynergyROM from r73 to r118 (current). I did the usualy TiBu and CWM backups. Upon attempting to restore apps with TiBu I was having issues, and realized my internal memory is full. There's no way I filled up 16GB.... It's all under "Misc. files" When I click on it, "System memory" sits at 4.05GB and "clockworkmod" sits at 5.70G.
What in the heck is causing CWM to fill up so much??? And what's "system Memory" consist of? Quite vague.
I'd appreciate some help on this. I really don't have THAT much installed, lol. Unless CWM recovery images (Which I have like 7 of) take up 500MB each...Then let me know so I can *facepalm*
Nandroid backups ALWAYS take up a lot of space. I have just one backup (via TWRP) and its sitting pretty at 1.7 GB. Your 5.6 GB looks about right since CWM uses the blobs folder to cut down on total Nandroid space by only backing up files that have changed. 5 CWM backups take up a great deal of space.
Also, check to make sure you completely uninstalled games. I learned the hard way that if you don't uninstall those 1+ gb games, they still take up hard disk space even when you wipe and flash roms. I went searching through I think "/Android/data" to find leftover files from uninstalled games. The second data downloaded once you initially installed the game stays until you actively uninstall.

Thanks for this, you confirmed my suspicion of the Nandroid backups taking up so much space. I really had no idea they were so large. I deleted most of the old ones I wasn't using and kept a few critical backups. Still having some issues with TiBu skipping 7 items that it coulnd't restore, and system apps erroring out on me. I might need to just go back to what I had.

Okay, I'm posting here again in extreme frustration.
I deleted most of my Nandroid backups and I'm up to almost 3GB of internal space. I had about 7-8 of them, now down to just 3. However, when I check my "storage" under settings, misc. files take up a total of 8.5GB. When I go inside, TiBu takes up 600mb, while "System memory" takes up a whopping 5GB+.
What in the hell is in the "System Memory" files that takes up 5GB? After ictures, videos, music, it brings me down to 2.8GB internal memory. Though I need to start using my sd-ext for some storage, this is NOT correct!!!
Anybody ever deal with this? I did some Googling and somebody had a similar issue with the Note 2.
Thanks in advance!

Did you go into cwm under the backup section and pick to clear needed data(something like that)

Some quick background... I was running Synergy ROM for GS3 r73 for the last couple months. I wanted to update to Synergy r118 when I came across this. I didn't notice until after I loaded r118 that my memory was so full, and TiBu had issues restoring files due to lack of memory.

I just "cleared nandroid space" after backing up all my backups to my PC (hmmm, ironic). No dice, still sitting at 3.95GB "System Memory" under settings/storage/Miscellaneous.
If you check your phone, do you get the same? A LARGE amount of data under misc., "system memory?" Mine is 3.95GB + 3.24GB CWM +700MB TiBU + 100MB various other items. This is what the 8.XX GB under miscellaneous storage consists of. I was starting to wonder if "system memory" consisted of all items below it added together, but I do not believe this to be true. If I add up the size of all files under misc., it comes to just over 8GB.
Any suggestions? I really want to know what is in system memory that beefs it up to almost 4 gigs!!! Arg, this is insanely frustrating!!!!!

Also, now most of the time I look in this location, "system memory" doesn't even show up, nor does CWM. So it looks like I have a handful of apps installed that vary between a couple KB and 700mb (TiBU).

I'm looking at this and I'm not sure if you realize but that 4-5 gb taken up by System Memory is TW. System Memory = TouchWiz, CPU. This space is always taken up on any device using flash memory.
Quick breakdown using your numbers, since you started with 16 GB internal storage:
*16GB = 11 GB usable, 4-5 (let's say 5GB) GB are dedicated to the System for the OS. You're not getting any of this back unless you're on an AOSP rom.
*so, 11 GB is the "new" starting point.
CWM nandroid = 3 GB
Pics/Vids = 2.8 GB
5GB is roughly the most you should have if you have 0 apps. I'm just using the numbers that you posted previously. If you have a few dozen apps and one or two games, I imagine you should now have probably 3 GB's at most to use of internal storage.
How close am I to what you have as free space? Is my estimation of apps/games taking 3 GB of data correct?

Ok, wow. I really never figured I'd run out of memory so quick with 16GB. I also didn't realize TW takes up so much space. Thank you for explaining this. Time to move my backups, pics, vids, and apps to the EXT-SD, stat!
Edit: You'll noticed I edited the above right as you were responding to it. I reread it and it seems garbled, lol.

Ahh, I see the edits now haha it's all good. So is everything squared away now? Out of curiosity, how much free space do you have left on the internal storage?
When you first turn on the 16 GB GSIII, you only have at most 12 GB to use, 4 GB are immediately lost to the system/OS. It's not really JUST TouchWiz taking up space, it's the entire OS and various components that fuel that. The GSIII is marketed at 16 GB but that's never the case with flash memory. Mine shipped with 12 GB readily usable however I caught a good deal on a 32 GB microsd card several months ago and have been fine since.
Hi there!
If I root my Nexus S, will it then be possible to see what's going on in the internal storage? My phone is acting rather strangely when it comes to the internal storage. When I delete an app's cache (from Settings/Apps) the indicated space does not get freed up. On the contrary, an equivalent amount of space gets subtracted from the indicated amount of free internal storage! On most occasions when I uninstall an app the space gets freed up. However, recently I had 300 MB available when I installed Chrome browser. That took up about 50 MB, so I had a remaining 250 MB available. I uninstalled it again and now I only have 200 MB free. I often get notifications that there is too little storage space available when updating rather small apps (typically less than 20 MB).
With a rooted phone, will I be able to see what's going on and easily locate and delete redundant files? (Back in the days I felt I had a lot better control and overview over my Pocket PC. With my Android I struggle to make sense of what's going on. Well, not that I´m going back...)
I'm not really asking for a quick solution to the problem because it seems from other discussions that this isn't possible. But I'd like to avoid running into the same problem again after a hard reset, rooting, or ROM change.
Cheers,
Larry

hey Larry,
first of all after you're rooted you can see all of your files and folders from...well..root directory
before doing so i'd try to move apps to SD or from SD depends where the low space is: http://i.stack.imgur.com/Aof9r.png
Hi eytan!
As I said, I'm short of internal storage. I've already moved just about everything possible out of the internal memory. Moving programs out of internal storage does result in more internal storage (as long as there's something left to move). However, this does not explain why my internal memory is disappearing. I ought to have a lot more available internal memory - at least 400 MB.
Yes, that's what rooting does. Maybe I should have elaborated a bit... Will it make sense without extensive knowledge of the Android system. It seems like instead of cache (and certain programs like chrome browser) being deleted they are somehow being copied within the internal storage. I was wondering if I would be able to locate this - find some folder that has grown 50 MB in case of the google chrome uninstallation. Or will all this data be stacked up in some sort of system file that isn't accessible.

well, you can always search your phone by folder size and locate the origin of this.
i guess your best chances are at DATA folder, just be careful and make sure you delete only things your'e sure that are already uninstalled and just have "leftovers"
Ive recently brought a moto g 2015 less than a week ago and have installed some apps, when i originally did this there was over 1.0gb of free internal space left. Over the week the space has shrunk to 500mb and is now notifiitying me that the internal storage is low (i cleared the cache out 3 hours ago and it was 540mb free now its 500mb so that 40mb in a couple of hours?!).
Ive cleared the cache, ive not installed any extra apps and there hasnt been any significant app upgrades that would use this space, also deleted all content from whatsapp etc and looked in the misc part of the storage and theres nothing using the space.
Has anyone else come across this or have any idea whats using the space up?
Cheers

Alot of apps/games use alot of data storage so that might be your issue and if your storing stuff from downloading like music and photos etc that will take up space as well
Hi thanks for the reply! I've got all my music and pictures stored on an sdcard and haven't downloaded any on this phone or taken any pictures. I'm just not sure what as suddenly used up all this storage that I can't now use in the space of a couple of hours without me doing anything on the phone or any apps updating
I had that to on a old phone, i think its your google play services.
my tip is to look in your apps and see what apps use to much space, than try to delete it
Probably other apps accumulating stored data, as was mentioned above. Chrome will grow over time, Google drive, Facebook etc.

You can move apps to the SD also. OP doesn't say they did that, but that can be done. Just go to settings, Apps, and then "ON SD CARD" tab. Any apps that can be moved will show there. Note that not 100% of the apps info can be moved, but most of it can. for example if you have an app that is 100MB, and move it, you will still have about 20MB on internal. Still better than the full 100MB.
Thanks for all the suggestions, ive tried them all and got a lot of free space back. Also found that google drive had 500mb of data which ive deleted!
Yeah. Haven't found a thread so far, so I'm gonna try my best.
Got the LG G Flex 2 H-955 (16GB Storage, 2GB RAM) about 2 Months ago, and this far it is a great phone besides this little problem I am annoyed with.
There is some sort of memory lack or something, but my internal Storage ist filled with a Folder in the Storage manager under Misc. named System Data, I think you know which one I mean, if you own the Flex 2. 2 Months ago, I think I can remember having it only 2 GB, which was totally fine, but now it has about 5.35 GB, which is very much on such small 16GB Storage.
Additionally I found the Apps-part in the Storage manager being 7.75 GB big, but looking under the installed Apps, I can barely find enough to get over 2 gb, and when I look with my File Explorer (ES Explorer) at /storage/emulated/Android it is about 1.8 GB.
My 360 Antivirus is recommending me daily to clean up my phone, which I do every second or third day, but it helps nothing. Maybe it makes it even worse. I don't know.
Is there any way to get rid of these data without rooting my phone and removing warranty?
Just got a new flex 2 16GB, it came with 5.1.1 pre installed. Straight out of the box it has a 7.30GB 'system data' folder in misc heading in storage!!
This leaves me with less than 7GB free space? This can't be right can it?
Very confused about this too
Same thing here! Can someone explain if this is normal? Thanks
Checking about about with root explorer, I found that the system folder is near 4GB, and the data folder is nearly 3GB. Maybe this is what the system data folder refers too....shrugs
Hi everyone. Sorry for starting a new post, but I looked and I wasn't sure where my question fit in. I'm using Link2SD on my kids' tablets and overall it works great. I got really fast (SanDisk extreme) micro SD cards for black Friday and the games run faster than with tablet memory. One thing I'm trying to figure out is why, even though I have both tablets set up mostly the same, one of the tablets has a lot less free space showing. I do have about 400-500 MB more of apps on the tablet showing less free space, BUT it is showing 4.0 GB free space vs. 5.8 GB free space on the other tablet. Why would this be (1.8 GB difference) if all else is the same?
Is it something to do with dalvik/cache? Speaking of it, is it safe to wipe the dalvik/cache through TWRP now that I have Link2SD set up with 30+ apps linked? Do I then just relink the dalvik files after rebooting? Or do things get messed up? I'm hesitant to do any of that because I have everything working well now, except the free space issue.
Or, if I multi-select and then choose to relink everything (apk, dex, internal data), could that help? Everything appears to already be linked correctly, so would relinking mess it up? Also, as a side note, I don't have any lib files linked as I have found that in the past it did mess things up for me. It would cause some apps to re-optimize at every boot, I think because the lib files wouldn't relink, even though I enabled it in the Link2SD settings. So now I stay away from that and all else is good, except this free space issue.
Any ideas on a solution? Is there something else taking up free space that's not listed in internal or system memory? Maybe downloaded Google play books? Or are they listed in the app data? Is the free space shown not correct, and it's actually more? I just can't figure it out. Any ideas would be great. Thanks!!!!
Here are the screenshots. You can see 5.76GB vs 4.07GB, but only 6.94GB vs 7.34GB for internal space difference. Why?
