Replacing stock HTC dialer with AOSP dialer - HTC One A9

Has anyone tried or been successful at Replacing stock HTC dialer with AOSP dialer? The Google contacts apk installs fine. But the HTC dialer and people app are the same app. I haven't been able to install the Google dialer app. I'm not sure why. Any help would be appreciated.

When I try to install dialer apk I get "App not installed"... Any way to get it on my rooted HTC One A9 (no CM) ?

i was actually able to install the stock google dialer via the web version of the playstore, everything works except when you get a call. no ring tone. when I go into the sound settings, a toast message appears saying Phone app does not have permission to write to system settings. I've went to permissions and toggled them all on.

Dear jasonevil
Have you got a link to download the stock google dialer please ? I download mine from the playstore but when I launch a call from the new dialer, HTC dialer runs instead of the google dialer.
Thanks for your help

Same thing happens here. It's just the dialer, the in call screen is handled by a different apk, contacts I believe.
Edit: go to apk mirror and search for Google contacts, download the one from December, it will work then

uninstall stock version - reboot then install modded version and all should work ( sometimes maybe you will need to clean google store cache)

-use root explorer and push the Message+CRC_1.apk to system/app
-change permissions to rw-r-r
-change ownership to root:root
-reboot!
-after reboot go into apps manager and clear data. thats it!

what exactly is going on with it? is it force closing? not able to send anything? i know when i didnt clear the data it would just keep force closing on me.
i just attached another one of the files. try renaming this one to Message+CRC_1 and following the directions again. maybe a cache wipe?
the file in the first post was pulled straight from my system/apps folder and is working great on my side. maybe this one will work for you.
EDIT: the name of the apk implies that you are replacing the stock sense messaging app. so if the name of your messaging app differs, try renaming the file to that of your stock messaging app.
So it worked for you? Awesome!
Running on stock 1.85 rooted. Working splendidly.

Any word if this works with Samsung Galaxy S III? I have tried several apps, and while I can get all of them to work initially, they all break after just a few txts. Also, how do you clear data in apps manager? 4.0.4 doesn't seem to have that option, on my Verizon variant anyway.

If you are using a ROM that is ODEX'd you need to rename the messaging odex file as well if delete it. Most sense ROMs right now are so double check. I've used this on every ROM I've flashed and it works flawlessly.

Are you using the file on the link provided or using it from the sys dump? You need to change your keyboard in settings.
Sent from my XT1058 using XDA Free mobile app
You can't install the keyboard if your not rooted. The reason you are getting the message that you have an app with the same signature is the google keyboard installed in the system. Since your not rooted you can't delete any system app. Yes you can delete it but not really once you reboot it will be back because write protection is enabled.

I love it! Looks a little cleaner, imo. After my wife's GS3 got the KitKat update, her vibrate on touch feature was broken on the default keyboard. Installed this on her phone and that "fixed" it.

This is the Play Store link for the app referenced in the article in the OP: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=uk.co.shenye.android.inputmethod.latin
Remember that you have to go into keyboard settings and select this keyboard for the input, and you have to go in to advanced settings to change it to Material Design. I'm assuming you just tried side-loading the .apk, which will not work for non-rooted phones. I know the linked keyboard works because I installed it on my wife's Moto X.
Good luck.

Gmail notifications FIX
Thanks to Basil3 for fixing this for me.
Since Gmail.apk can't be edited and the notification text color is tied into Gmail, he was able to hex edit the Gmail color to a lighter color, so Gmail app text is now the same color as the notification text, a lighter gray so you can see the notification, but Gmail is still functional. (Can't change it to say white, as it would then be white on white in gmail, could do a teal color, but this is more clean, IMO, give him a thanks!
I attached the edited Gmail.apk in the OP. If it doesn't install directly, use a file manager and replace your stock apk with the edited one, then reboot.

OK then when you get that FC you need to go into system apps and uninstall updates to gmail
What I'd do.
I'd go into data app and delete all Gmail and then in system app delete Gmail as well, reboot and Gmail should be gone, if not you missed one to delete.
Then once it's gone download it, go into data app, grab it and move it to system app, rename it to Gmail2apk and the folder Gmail2, reboot. Make sure it works. Then take the edited one delete the one in system app and put the edited one in, rename to Gmail2.apk and reboot. You may have to set permissions, see attached image.
Either way should work. But second method def will that's how I did it.
Ehi man, i have flash your theme dark on my Wolla gpe H12, work fine, but I have reboot system only play video on Facebook...
