A question about backup restore after rooting. - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello guys, I just feel kindof lost so I'll post here. (I am a programmer, know how stuff works , I've rooted a nexus 7 , installed a crap load of different stuff on it etc...)
I'm thinking of rooting my OnePlus One. Regarding fastboot oem unlock: In my nexus 7 2013 wifi version it did not delete user data. After some googling I found out that it will wipe user data on the OPO.
I've got my music on the PC and I don't care about the pictures much , I'll just pull em and upload them to google photos (like I do once every year).
My contacts are synced with google contacts.
What else do I need to backup besides apps? Iwould not want to re-download everything or lose per-device saves. Is that possible?
Also, after rooting, how exactly do I restore these stuff I backed up?
And I don't need to flash a new image, I just need a superuser app, right?
I'm rooting the phone to use Sisaxis mainly.

All this wiping, how do you people keep your data

i'm reading through all the posts for people updating to the new firmware and wiping away all their data without a care. how can you afford to do that so easily?
I have lots of data like SMS messages I need to keep around, applications that cant be downloaded anymore (such as hello aim beta, wifi tether), settings, etc.. that I just can't wipe my phone. how are you people keeping this data around?
I personally use apps to Sd card and to backup sms and such I use MyBackup Pro available on market for about $5. It works great. Go try it. You can even back up applications with it.

I usually will run a nandroid backup first then i can just flash it back without any trouble after the wipe.
I also have GSCRIPT on the phone and have a script that backs up all my apps to the SD and then I have a SCRIPT that will reinstall all my APPS when it is all said and done if I need it for those times that I am unable to backup first.

I always make a nandroid backup. As a matter of fact, I make a nandroid backup weekly or before I do anything drastic to my phone like delete all SMS or try something new. Nandroid backup process takes but 5 minutes. Most of the apps can be downloaded over again and most of SMS are of no importance. All my pics and audio and wallpapers are on SD, so that automatically gets moved.
If I ever need to reference to something, I just flash the nandroid backup, look up what I need and then flash back to the other nandroid backup etc. So far that is my game plan, but i've yet to do this as I've never really had the need to go back.
It is tedious process especially for the apps but I have kept a list and it isn't too bad.
there are other wifi tether programs that are probably better than what you had before.
anything and everything is out there apk wise, if you know where to look.
but, there are backup programs and since I don't use them (other than nandroid), hopefully someone can comment on them.
question, i can do a nandroid backup fine without any problems. i believe i am using jf1.42 recovery image, but lets say my phone bricks, whatever nandroid backed up for me, how do i install it back again? n00b question i know but ive searched around and havnt found that answer yet.
I haven't wiped my phone in over a month.
I use MyBackup Pro. Backs up all your Data, Apps, and settings. And, of course, I make a nandroid backup before I flash anything.

Here's a quick and easy explanation: http://androidcommunity.com/forums/168953-post6.html
I've tried the Nandroid back up, but for the life of me I can't get ADB working on my computer. Is there a script to run it through recovery mode or through the terminal emulator?
Thanks
Hi Aim beta is still available in the market (Is it different from hello AIM beta?) and wifi tether for root users is still available at google code. If there was a program that I wanted that was no longer available I would just back it up to SD before wiping. For SMS I use SMS backup. That way SMS streams are available all the time in my gmail (not that I consider my SMS messages all that important)
Settings take me a little while to get back but usually if I am wiping to put on a new ROM my workflow will change a bit so redoing settings from scratch is not a big deal.
Given that contacts calendar and mail are synced with gmail, wiping is less a concern for me than it was with WM. Reloading apps takes a bit of time but it is not a major effort since most things are either on the market or on my SD.
...what everyone else said.
Also, I use fastboot on the computer side (Windows XP) to get Nandroid's backups back on my phone. This only works if you have the engineering bootloader, though (the thing with the three skateboarding androids). First, you'll have to copy "boot.img," "data.img," and "system.img" to whatever folder fastboot's in. Open up your command prompt. The command line you use is this:
cd *whatever directory fastboot's in*
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash userdata data.img
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot reboot

I use nandroid and mybackup pro.
Heres a question for the ages. If i do a nandroid backup on say...JF's 1.5ADP and then update to Haykuros image, after a wipe, would i have a problem if i was to fastboot flash my data.img file? Would it cause problems? I have yet to try it.
Does mybackup pro back up paid apps?
I dont really care about my txt i mean i got alot of txt but nothing to much to be save..I use appmanger to save my .apk apps to sd. and contacts are sync to google so yeah thats all i do.
If you have apps to sd it's as easy as following any apps to sd tutorial. All your apps that are already on your sd card will pop right back into your phone. In case anyone didn't know this. I tried and found out that it worked. So PM me for more details. I can't do much right now. But I can let you know what commands to type in adb shell or terminal emu.
Using the apps to sd, once I set the links up, everything is back, although my protected apps show up as the .apk name as with a gear icon. I have to uninstall then re-install those. But I am looking around for ways to remedy that. I think I found one post, but haven't wiped since I found it.

[Q] Rooting/Roming Backup Help

Hello, I currently have a stock non rooted inspire and was thinking of finally taking the plunge to root and flash a rom. On the Captivate this was super simple and i noticed it was harder on the inspire. I am more concerned about backing up everything on my phone from contacts to apps and stuff like that. I know there are apps out there but i am unsure how they work. Please help me with the method to make sure that non of my data is lost and i can just load it back on my phone after i flash a rom. Thank you =)

1. Don't worry about contacts, Google backs them up. Once you flash a new rom and sign into your google account, they re-sync.
2. Use "My Backup" to backup Sms, mms, contacts, call Log, apps, system settings. Once you root your phone, use my backup root to restore your stuff.
Thank you! Can i just restore everything after i flash a GB rom or will that cause issues
Yeah you should be able to. To me the most important things are contacts and messages, everything else can be downloaded/re-setup again.
Keep in mind, certain app-specific data won't be able to be backed up unless the app has a specific "back up/export" type of function, as some app-specific data is inaccessible to back-up apps on a non-rooted phone, by OS design.
Once you're rooted, though, any app-specific data that was previously inaccessible while unrooted, will be accessible going forward. So you'd have to start over, ONCE, in the inital move from unrooted to rooted, but after you reestablish that data, these backup apps, with root access, will be able to make sure you won't ever have to start over again.
Mainly stuff like angry birds progress/scores, to-do lists that aren't exportable/save-able to a separate file on your SD card, etc.

When you unlock the bootloader, the phone gets factory reset. That is the reason you lose all data on phone memory(Apps, Pictures, Messages, Contacts, Music etc). Your SD Card should remain untouched.
Once you unlock your bootloader and root your phone, then you can perform a nandroid backup, But until then, you need to make use of standard options as below:
1. Contacts: Backup with Google Contacts
2. Apps: Backup with google. In most cases you can restore all your apps, when you login into the playstore after factory reset
3. Messages/Email: Use standard Apps available on Play Store to backup to SD Card or your computer (using the data cable)
4. Pictures: Use Apps like picasa, facebook, dropbox to save pictures online or copy to your computer/SD Card
5. Music: Same as above.

[Q] Backup Rom before unlocking bootloader and rooting

I am about to unlock the bootloader and root my Nexus 5. I have had the phone for a long time so I have a lot of apps and data on my phone that I don't want to lose. I need a way to do a 100% backup of my apps, app settings/data, and personal data. I would like to create a custom rom of my phone, then flash that rom back after I unlock and root. Is this possible to create a custom rom backup without an unlocked bootloader and rooted phone? Will this backup everything on my phone like I want or will I need to do something else?
I have unlocked, rooted, and flashed ROMs before on my Droid X and Nexus 4.
Thanks in advance for any help.
Use Helium to backup apps and rest of the stuff can be copy pasted to your computer.
Do check the thread linked in my signature before you start flashing things!
Thanks for the reply.
I have Helium and have been using it for a while to backup but I haven't restored anything yet. It seems to always run into errors or fail to backup everything but every backup app I have used does the same. The best backup app I have used is titanium but it requires root which makes it useless for this.
Android needs a cloud sync for app settings/data. This would solve one of the biggest android problems. I hate losing my game progress and other app data.

I have used Helium only once when I was full stock to backup some 50 apps and it did it's job without complaints.
Almost all games which I play are synced with Google Play Games. So, even though local phone content gets erased, I can sync via Play Games and start where I left off.
I have synced with Google play for the games that Can but some games that I have a ton of progress in don't have that option. Need For Speed: Most Wanted for example. I lost all of my progress when I rooted my Nexus 4 and then again when I switched to my Nexus 5. I tried every backup method I could find and the only one that ever worked was titanium.
I am reading the thread you mentioned. I am pretty confident in my ability to root and flash. I have used command prompt to unlock, root, and flash several times. I am currently using the skipsoft toolkit because it is easy and quick and I hate typing all of the commands and directories into cmd prompt. I just flashed stock android 4.4.4 onto my Nexus 4 and rerooted it a few hours ago. It did have an issue where the play store service was messed up so I had to reflash it but it is working flawless now. Planning on selling the Nexus 4 so I just wanted a clean and updated install.

How to properly FULLY backup an android phone that doesn't have TWRP.

Please advise. I really **Really** want to be sure that if I try to backup my sister's phone that I do it properly and can fully and cleanly restore it to a new ROM with no issue. (Be sure that I'll also do external backups of Photos and SMS/MMS databases and whatever else possible onto a computer first, in case of data loss or if I screw up.)
---
Okay, so here's the situation: (Google Pixel 6 Pro)
So I installed a custom ROM on my sisters brand new phone a couple of months back. Problem is, the dev behind said ROM may stop maintaining it due to personal reasons. I'll need to in this case switch her phone to another ROM, so that she continues to receive security updates. By the sounds of it I have to wipe the phone completely when switching ROMs, including the user partition. (Correct me if wrong.)
I'm still fairly new to the custom ROM/unlocked bootloader world, so I wanted to kindly ask around for advice on how to **Properly** backup her phone in such a way that I can later fully restore her photos, SMS/MMS, apps, etc. more or less as though I never switched ROMs on her.
I've already heard of TWRP, but the phone doesn't have a version for it. I also heard about the promising Migrate app posted here. Last but not least is the ADB backup feature--however I also heard some conflicting information suggesting that of late Google is deprecating that feature and making it useless. (Please correct if wrong.) I'm still fairly new to the whole custom ROM scene (and rooting too, but in this case her phone is unrooted, only bootloader unlocked with a custom ROM).
Rule #1 - if a OS is fast, stable and fulfilling it's mission... let it be! Updates can and do break things. Pie and higher are relatively secure unless you do stupid things. This stock, optimized N10+ is still running on Pie; last update >2.5 years, current load is over 2 yo. Still fast, stable and secure. I spend very little time doing maintenance and this load runs like a bat out of hell. What's not to like?
If you have to reload latter so be it. Don't go looking for trouble by messing with firmware unless you absolutely need to. Taking a more conservative approach will save you time and trouble in the long run. Google doesn't care about your time or the trouble their updates cause you.

There should be no reason to need to wipe user partition. It should only be necessary to, at most, wipe the system partition(stock ROM), data partition(user installed apps and user settings), cache partition and dalvik/ART cache then flash the ROM. These wipes will wipe system data, your user settings, user installed apps and their corresponding app data. These wipes will not wipe data/media, the partition where your photos, videos, downloaded files, etc.. are stored.
You can backup the app data for the user installed apps by connecting to PC then use the PC file manager to open your device's internal storage, go to the Android/data folder, in that folder is all of your user app data. Copy the Android/data folder to your PC. After you install your ROM, reinstall all of the user apps that were installed then you can connect to PC and then copy your backed up Android/data folder over to your device to overwrite the ROMs existing Android/data folder. This will restore your app data for your user installed apps.
Contacts should be backed up to Google and restored when signing into the device after the new ROM boots and re-syncing the device.
You will need to backup your SMS/MMS texts via a separate method. Just do a search for:
"Backup and Restore SMS android"
That should find several methods. Use a method that you are comfortable with.
If you use WhatsApp, backing up and restoring WhatsApp, WhatsApp account and your WhatsApp messages requires it's own specific method. You can find the method by doing a search for:
"Backup and restore WhatsApp"
Sorry, if I knew its specific method, I would explain it.
Is there anything else that you don't want to risk losing or anything specific that is on your device that you 100% absolutely need to be certain gets retained/restored after the update?
What custom ROM are you coming from and what ROM are you going to? Depending on the ROMs in question, you might be able to dirty flash the ROM.
