Is it possible to install Cyanogenmod 12.1 by booting TWRP instead of installing/flashing TWRP? My thought is it would be much easier returning to stock from Cyanogenmod if stock recovery remained in place.
Yes, it's possible!

Hi guys,
I flashed my bootloader and TWRP in order to install CM 12.1 NIGHTLY HammerheadCAF ROMs. It's working fine, but now I want to try the Android M preview. Do I just have to flash the original bootloader and non-caf TWRP and be back to normal?
Flashed stock images via fastboot and back to normal.
hi
did something wrong and bricked my 64g opo, managed to unbrick it from advise on here but its stuck on color os, i have been trawling here and trying things all afternoon with no success. is there a certain rom i need to start with?
i have twrp
thanks for looking
done now
You have to tell which twrp version
And color os roms flash their own firmware so you would have to flash latest cm nightly or firmware zips in general section
TWRP should not be 2.8.7.0 it has some problems with firmware flashing.
I recommend unofficial 2.8.6.0 or the newest 3.0.2.0

twrp is 2.8.5.1
any pointers to the right place to look
Flash twrp 2.8.6 official and flash COS 12.1 OR 13 signed zip ( twtp flashable )Whichever you want , you are up to date now.
So I've been trying to update my Shield LTE ROW since this Friday from the stock based rom LL (version 3.1.1) to the MM-based rom (version 4.2) and spend a dozen of hours failing to update :crying:
When I install a MM-based rom the shield boots and the nvidia logo shows a few seconds and then the screen goes black. When the tablet is attached to my pc I noticed that the tablet is not turned off but booted in APX-mode.
These are the things I've tried:
Installing the recovery image 4.2 (fails)
Installing the recovery image 4.1 (fails)
Installing the recovery image 4.0.1 (fails)
Installing the recovery image 3.1.1 (works)
Installing several full and incremental OTA updates to 4.x (fails)
Installing CM 13.0 (fails)
Installing carbon 5.1.1 (works)
Followed the guides mentioned in topics: http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tablet/help/unable-to-update-to-marshmallow-rom-t3444124 and http://forum.xda-developers.com/shield-tablet/general/unofficial-update-original-shield-t3281541 (fails)
I've tried a lot of things, but now I'm out of ideas.
Has anyone a explanation why MM-based roms don't want to boot on my tablet? And has the knowledge to fix this?
All feedback is welcome and appreciated.
You are currently able to flash and boot with 3.1.1 or stuck in apx mode?
I'm able to flash and boot with 3.1.1. Only MM-based roms are stuck in apx mode when booting.
You are probably on the Lollipop boatloader still. With that bootloader MM based roms don't work. Flash the latest stock from here, root it with cf-autoroot, flash twrp and MM based roms should work.
Thanks for your advice, I'll try it this weekend.
Just a quick question, why do I need to root and flash twrp? Shouldn't it work if I only flash the latest stock?
TWRP says "Patching system image unconditionally" for CM 14.1 nightly on XT1033
Hey I have a question please help me.....
I have an old Moto G (1st Gen Indian Retail Unit) XT1033. I have successfully unlocked the bootloader and installed twrp recovery. When flashing the CM 14.1 nightly it is stuck at "Patching system image unconditionally" for about an hour now. What might be the problem? I've searched a lot in xda forums but of no luck. :crying: Can anyone guide me through this?
Thanks in advance.

* When you boot into recovery, TWRP asks for write permissions? If it does, allow modifications and try to flash again.
* Also you can try to download the ZIP file again, maybe the download went bad or corrupted.
* When this happened to me I made a *very clean install*. This means, that before flashing the zip file you wipe all the partitions (cache, dalvik, system, data, internal storage). Then reboot to recovery again, copy the zipfile and the google apps from the PC over USB, then flashed both zip files and then rebooted without problems.
The problem that you describe also happened to a friend's phone but unfortunately for him, it was a faulty phone (internal storage was starting to degrade, eventually it stopped working).
Thanks. I am going to bed right now and try to do something tomorrow morning. Also, is root access mandatory for flashing custom ROM? I am currently in stock 5.1 ROM if that matters.
P.S. I was thinking that may be it could work if I go from 5.1 to 6.0 on the CM 13 and then go to CM 14.1. Would that make any difference than going directly to CM 14.1 from stock ROM running on 5.1?
Help Guys!! I can't get it to work! And also my twrp is not asking for any permissions.
My Bootloader is version 41.1A if that matters anything.
UPDATE: I flashed the CM 13 Snapshot and it worked. I am now going to try updating from CM 13 to CM 14.1
One doubt, I currently have no GApps flashed. Can I go ahead and update to CM 14.1 and then download and flash GApps for CM 14.1? Or should I flash GApps for both CM 13 and CM 14.1 separately?
Solved!! After installing CM 13.0 I was able to install CM 14.1 successfully. Sorry for the late post.
