Power button stuck, can only get to fastboot - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My N5 has a hardware fault where the phone thinks the power button is permanently pressed, so as soon as you try and boot it, it turns off again.
I am able to get to fastboot, by holding down the volume down button and power. But from there, I cannot boot to recovery or normal system boot.
I have been unable to fix this, and I really want to get some of my app data off.
Is there a way of extracting a backup somehow from fastboot?
I'm guessing no, as you can't access via adb through fastboot can you?
Any ideas gratefully received.

Did you try removing the motherboard and cleaning the area around the power button with alcohol? I had a sticky power button too and removed the motherboard, applied a lot of pressure to the power button as I pressed and released it for a couple of minutes and this solved the issue.

I had this issue, took apart the phone, didn't fix the issue. Read a thread were multiple owners said smacking the phone on a hard surface on the power button side fixed it.
So I was hesitant but after a few hard taps, it fixed and haven't had the issue for 4 months so far. I also pressed the power button a few times hard.

Hi. Yes, I have tried all those, no joy.
I'm resigned to the fact the phone is bricked.
So, given that, do I have any options to get the app data off?
Merry Christmas by the way!

I suggest getting a quote to replace the power button.

Wonder if I can desolder it, and use a paperclip to short the switch connection?

There are 3 connections for the motherboard for the power switch and it looks pretty easy to de-solder according to youtube videos I watched. I'm not good at soldering so I had my local repair shop replace it with a new one.

[Q] [Q} Broken Power Button, Phone won't go into Recovery or Download Mode

The power button on my phone recently has stopped working. I need to get it warrantied, but I am running CM 10.2. I need to Odin back to stock, but I can not get into Download Mode or the recovery. When I go into Download mode, the initial screen pops up, the one where you choose to hit up to continue, or down to reboot normally. After I hit up, the screen goes black and nothing happens.
I really need to get back to stock, as Bestbuy are being dicks, and demanding I do a factory reset before they send my phone in.
Anything? I still need help on this.

This has been covered at least 10 times in the past few months we need a sticky. Take your battery out hold your phone so the power button is facing a table or floor and slam that side a few times it should work again (Temporary). You might need to hit it on the surface really hard 10-20 times before it works. Just not to hard or else you might crack the screen. I used a mouse pad to soften the impact. This trick no longer works for me so I ripped the button off. After about a month of doing this I needed to use things that would only hit the button to make it work. About a month after that nothing worked so I just took it off the motherboard and now boot from a off state by plugging into the wall and enter odin mode deny the prompt and it kicks me into a workable state.

I can get into the system just fine. When I go into the recovery or download mode, it doesn't stay in that mode. I tried the banging thing, and it made my power button go from intermittently working, to not working at all.
keep doing it until it works. The button is sticking that is why it reboots/stopped working.

It sounds like your power button is physically broken, and it is activating intermittently, which is stopping the phone from entering download mode. My only experience with this problem is my own phone but ultimately mine got so bad that I had to rip the button off the motherboard, as ThePagel did. Your symptoms sound the same as mine.
You can try this procedure to get into recovery, which works for me without a power button. You will probably have the same problem you are having now with the phone rebooting on its own before you actually get into recovery, because the power button is activating.
1. Take the battery out of the phone and unplug it from USB power.
2. Plug in USB power.
3. While holding down the volume-down button and the Home button, insert the battery (this is a little tricky).
4. The phone should start and warn you that you are entering Download mode. If you want to use Odin to return to stock, do that now.
5. If you want to get into Recovery instead, press Volume Down to reboot and then *immediately* push and hold Volume Up and Home simultaneously. The phone should reboot into recovery. Mine does.
If that doesn't work, and you can't get a new phone without returning it to stock, then prying the power button off the phone's motherboard may be your only solution.

[Q] [HELP]: My Nexus 5 has a defective power button and is in constant boot loop

well, it is constantly off unless i plug it in. then it is in constant boot loop.
if i slam the phone onto a hard service directly on the power button it might boot up just to the main screen then shuts off again.
same with repeatedly pressing the button. as soon as i stop spamming the button, phone shuts off.
i am out of warranty time and do not want to wait to send it in and get it fixed by LG.
are there ANY other methods i can try?
thank you!
Flick the power button several times quite hard.

Unfortunately you don't have many options. The post above this one has the ifixit thread about replacing the board, which is your only option other than sending to LG for repair.
When this happened to me on my previous N5, it was recommended to me to use ButtonRemapper (search XDA for it) to disable the power buttons entirely and reassign them, then setup a tap-to-wake customization.
Again, I did not try this, and it's been a long time since then so who knows if these solutions even work, but it's a starting point at least for you to look into.
Flick the power button hard several times!

Nexus 5 - Hardbrick ?

Hey guys,
I need some urgent help.
My Nexus 5 device is not booting. It stucks at the bootlogo then powers off and restarts again.
Normally it wouldnt be hard to fix such an issue but the problem is :
I can't boot into bootloader (bootloader appears for 1 second then phone powers off)
I can't boot into Recovery mode (Recoverymode appears for a second then phone powers off)
I can't get my phone into fastboot mode, - it appears for a few seconds durign the bootloop as an "unknown device", but I am not able to flash a new bootloader/factoryimage.
I tried like every possible option what I can do, but nothign worked for me.
What else can I try since I can' get my phone into fastbootmode?
Bootloader is unlocked
Secureboot is enabled
(from what i can see in these 2 seconds where the bootlaoder pop's up)
Is there a way to recover my nexus5?

Remove the motherboard and clean around the power button. When you have cleaned around the power button, quickly press and release the power button using more pressure than normal a few times, try to boot again.
Thanks for the tips!
I never thought that a broken Button could cause this issue.
I will check it as soon as I am home.
But how am I supposed to clean the motherboard, and I don't understand how cleaning the button from the outside
of the case should help to solve this problem.
Can you guys explain it a bit more detailed please? ^^
Are there good and very detailed tutorials for this?
And yes, you ideas definitely make sense because some days earlier when the Nexus5 was still
booting fine, I remember that I sometimes had the issue when I turned of the display with the power button
it instantly turned on again and I had to turn it off like 3-5 times until it really was off (standby).
To clean around the power button, you'll have to disassemble the phone which is not hard to do it you take your time and use the right tools.

I noticed that the issue really was the powerbutton, - however the button was broken and
not repairable by cleaning. To repair the phone I would have to purchase a new motherboard.
In the end I decieded to purchase another phone, just saying that if someone will have the same issue in the future
try to clean first, if that wont help the powerbutton is most likely broken, and this results in a new motherboard-purchase because
the button is not repaireable by hand
The power is replaceable if the damage is confined to the power button itself.

Nexus 5 rebooting continuously and don't start without power source

Hello everyone,
I was flashing MIUI official on my nexus 5, and I was in bootloader, and I was just simply press power button then devices just turned off and
wont start again. after turned off, device dont start using power button, then I connect power source, device just started and rebooting again and again, without power source device dont start, and when it starts on power source, device just rebooting continuously,
Service center said you need to change mother board.
It is necessary to change board or this is just a problem of power button stuck inside
Any sujection?
I suggest removing the motherboard. Then, quickly press and release the power button several times in a row using more pressure than normal. Not too much pressure as you don't want to cause any further damage.
If that doesn't solve the problem, it could be a battery issue.

I have not flashed my phone but have kept it up to date. I have version 6.01 build MMB29Q. I have had the issue during the last two weeks with it restarting but then just going off again. I have a separate Nexus 5 I user for parts for these situations. I replaced the motherboard got it up and running, everything seemed fine but then the power would just go off for no reason. The only way I could get it to restart was by holding the volume down for 10 seconds and then selecting the power button. The difference with this motherboard is that it will at least start up. I did change the battery as well and that did not make any difference. At this point I am thinking about flashing with a different OS to see if that fixes it. I unfortunately do not have a fix but I am at least at a point where I know how to keep it functional. Any further fix suggestions would be appreciated. I think my next step will be to flash it with a different OS to see if this issue persists.

I am confused, its battery issue or power button issue, I will try to repair my phone in shop not in service center
Chances are that you have the same problem I had with the power button.
My N5 had this behavior and was about to be replaced when I found something that worked. Try this: press and hold the power button several times with more pressure than usual. If no luck, smack it a few times (no kidding) in a table - I suggest you to do it with a cover. The main problem is with the switch soldered on the motherboard and the above steps is to 'unlock / release' the internal parts of this switch - the main culprit.
Several people had this issue and the spank showed to be useful: LINK
My N5 is working just fine, almost two weeks now. Good luck!

Recover data from dead/faulty Nexus 5 (power button loop)

Hi
My Nexus 5 has entered into (what I believe to be) a hardware bootloop due to a faulty power button switch. I will look into getting it fixed locally but am currently wondering if there's a way to get the phone on (disabling the power button in some way?) in order that I can recover data from the built in storage.
I realise this is unlikely as it would involve some kind of invasive hardware trick.
On the basis that my phone may never turn back on, is there any way to extract data from the built in storage at all?
try smacking it into table below the power button. Seriously If it wont help, just pop off the back cover and using a knife or something "brake" the button, and insert the usb cable while holding volume down button,. then send "fastboot reboot" command. You are going to fix the button anyway, so breaking it wont matter
I had same problem. I took phone apart and soaked button side in pure alcohol. And then some tapping and pushing the button and it started to work.
The power button getting stuck has happened a few times to me. I literally just find a wood table and give a few stiff taps to the top corner of the phone (power button facing down). Always does the trick for me.

Thanks, but I've had no luck with this 'solution'. I have tried tactically hitting my device but no luck. Have also smacked it down out of anger and no luck either.
I think there are two distinct power button failures. One where the button still works but sticks and can be unstuck (I had this on my first Nexus 5 and it was replaced by Google out of warranty) and another where the power button module fails and becomes 'always on' needing replaced.
