I am going to buy a new phone of contract in a few days. I have watched a lot of reviews and am now doubting between the Samsung Galaxy S6 and the Sony Xperia Z5. I know both pros and cons between the phones, but there remains 1 uncertainty: the battery. Some sites or reviews say that the Z5 has a better battery life, and some say the S6 has te better life. Why are there so many different views on something like battery life? And which one really has the better battery life, and how much hours of time?
Thanks,
Reno
Because it totally depends on how you use the phone and what apps you have installed. So no one will ever be accurate. And even answering this now for you is technically pointless because we SHOULD in a few weeks from what we hear be getting a 6.0 update completely changing the operating system again anyway

Does it will greatly improve the battery of Z5?

Will the doze feature probably increase both battery lifes drastically?
On my Nexus 5 deep sleep is ridiculous. Like 99% when left alone. Compared to the Z5 currently only gets around 90% so let's hope it makes a good difference

Probably neither... It's totally user dependant, so unless someone has had both, with the same apps and use to answer you'll never know

If the question is compared to Note 5 i might say Note 5, but with S6 it might be about the same. Depends on your behaviour. if all you do is web browsing, i'd say Z5 is the better one due to IPS backlight only + PSR panel. if you're watching movies all day long, the AMOLED of S6 should give you better result especially on dark movies.
I got the S6 and now the Z5 too.
First charge: Z5 have a better battery life
S6: 3 hour SOT 12 hour
Z5: 3-4 hour SOT 24 hour
I will sell my S6. Not only because the battery life. The Z5 runs smoother and the ui is much better in my opinion

Stamina mode is the key here.
I didn't use stamina mode. Now stamina is on if battery is lower than 15%.
Only charging is better with S6.
I should buy a speed charger but with S6 it's faster I think. Battery is smaller too

So I've had all latest android phone that have come out in the past year or so and I'm still not satisfied. Some phones like the HTC one and galaxy note 3 I've gotten multiple times. I've gone as extreme as the Sony xperia Z ultra. Thinking about getting the nexus 5 now. Who's happy or unhappy? What are your reasons for either? How do you feel about the phones battery for a heavy Internet user? How's the screen and camera? One thing I'm not concerned about is software as I like and simple device.

my suggestion is to stop being so picky as there is no such thing as perfection.
I have a couple gripes with it but overall I'm satisfied. It's fast, has great battery life, good call quality, etc.. But it's a pretty plain design, I really don't like the front of it- it kinda feels unfinished to me. Also, the screen, while accurate, seems absolutely washed out compared to other phones. But everything else is good. Have you tried the Moto X? I have that as well and I prefer it to the N5. Both are great phones but the X is something special. I had the HTC One and GS4 before it, and I like it the best out of all of them.

Do you like custom roms? Thats what the N5 is for. Modifying the heck out of your device. Stock + GEL is boring and borderline bloatware. If you weren't happy with the Note 3, then I am not sure if you will like this. I would probably have bought a Note 3 over this if it wasn't hundreds of dollars more.
N5 Good for:
- AOSP Roms
- Modifying Software
- Low memory consumption
- Performance
N5 has middle-of-the-road:
- Screen
- Camera
- Battery life
- Build quality
- Speaker
- Stock software features

Was only getting 3hrs screen on time until I switched to franco kernel and now I am getting around 5hrs sot. Google always does a bad job with their stock kernels.

I love my nexus 5, I'm coming from a blackberry bold so it was quite a big upgrade but I've had no problems with it. The only thing I'm not a fan of is if playing games the battery does drain pretty quick. But this is because of how much a power house the Nexus 5 actually is. I have bought an external battery pack (PNY 5200mAh) which gives me 1 full charge so sometimes i can go 2.5 days without having to charge through the wall.
I'm running:

The main battery killer is the screen, not the processor. If we had a tiny screen then you'd see how much more the battery last.

I'd have to agree with most that the battery is the worst thing about this phone. I average about 3.5-5 hours depending SOT. I play ingress often, so that is the main battery killer, even when I owned the GS3. If you like simple, easy to use and modify devices, this is the one. Otherwise, get something else.
Best battery I've ever had. 3.5-5 SoT is good. Can't believe people complain the nexus doesn't incorporate alien technology

Currently I'm very happy with my N5 :good:
At the beginning I was dissatisfied with battery, but now especially after flashing franco kernel evereything is just fine.
I was happy with my N4 battery life as I'm not scared of topping off a charge when around one.
I guess I'm the only one that has access to power.
So anyhow, my N5 battery life does me well.

I actually went in this thread expecting you to have commented. Anyway, on topic: I am happy with it. I don't know what people do to get such great battery. I get about 3 hours at most and that's rare. Usually I'm under 2 hours of SOT. But that's fine for me. I have an external battery for abnormal days. I love the speed of the device. It does everything with no lag or stutter and I value that a lot. I would say that is the biggest pro of the device so if you value that then go for it.
It's very laggy.
I did a comparison between my old S4 scrolling through engadget's mobile site and the s4 was smoother!
The battery life sucks. I'm having battery life anxiety.
The fingerprint reader misses many times.
The double click to launch the camera is kinda slow.
It's way heavier than either the s4 or the s5. And you can feel it, it's like a brick.
This thing gets crazy hot when in use.
So far, The only thing good about this phone is the camera. and the semi fast wireless charging.
I think it will be going back...
I don't have any of these issues on my black TMO S7.
OP sounds like a troll.
I think you have a defective unit... You need to try to get it replaced for a new one
Yeah that doesn't sound right. This is there fastest phone over ever owned and it heats the least even with wireless fast charging.
Troll alert? Nothing about the OP makes sense compared to a S4. Unless you are running some dated apps on 6.0.1 that could be misbehaving and causing some serious issues. Could have gotten a defective unit, but seems unlikely.
Do a factory reset. First thing I do on any new phone. Should really be using the phone a week before reporting battery issues.
I'm not having any of these issues besides battery life but that's a fault on my behalf. Only gets very warm after wireless charging
battery life sucking is definitely true. the battery is pretty god awful on my regular s7.

Battery life take time Phone has to optimize itself to your use, beyond that, Everything the OP states is the exact opposite of what I've seen with the phone so far. And after a couple of weeks of use, thanks TM for getting me this phone so early, the battery is not really having any issue during normal use.

That is "normal", but in this case it is the app that is misbehaving and not the phone itself. Use antutu or similar benchmark.
I'm really struggling choosing a new phone. Have a dying G2 which was an excellent phone especially when it came to battery life. I've been searching for a more up to date alternative and this phone comes up when it comes to battery life. I was going through the forum though and I've been seeing lots of people with huge battery drains and 2 to 3 hours of SOT. That's what I get with my G2 that has a battery that has seen too many charging cycles. Now, I know that someone without a problem won't be posting how great the battery is so I'm not sure how prevalent this issue might be.
So, how is battery life on this phone without having to mess around with it? Prices have gone down but it is still a bit of money, I would rather get something that just worked for the next 3 years (like the LG did). I've looked into more recent and expensive options with the SD820 or the Kirin 955, suposedly a lot more power efficient SoCs but I don't see the numbers reflecting this. The Z5 comes pretty close if not even better than an S7, P9, OP3, etc.
I've also had this idea that, regardless of the generation, the SD810 was pretty bad on battery life and heating issues leading to a quicker dying phone so now I'm confused.
Opinions and suggestions would be most helpful! :highfive:
I have a Z2 and a Z5 now my Z2 easily runs 6hrs SOT every single day and also seems faster than my z5 (except in Games or poorly optmised apps)
Now my z5 on the other hand only manages 4hrs SOT but with some minor tweaking the ui can become very fluid yet to find a solution to bad battery
My suggestions:
Nexus 6P
Xperia Z3
Lg G4
Xperia z5 (if you are fine with 4hrs SOT)
Also note that z5s not so impressive battery life can be to blame of the million or two wakelocks in the current firmware so a update may fix this
Sent from my D6503 using XDA-Developers mobile app
Thanks! I actually think I made a mistake in my research and was looking at Z3 numbers. Doesn't do me much good as I can't find a new 32GB version of the thing for sale here in Europe. Used, sure, but I would be risking having the same issues pretty soon.
You recommended the G4? I've asked about that phone here on G4 forum also and a lot of people report some pretty bad battery times. It's a shame as it would be the perfect choice for me if it wasn't for that. If I wasn't so suspicious of its battery performance I wouldn't even consider any other phone. A lot of people reported times I never had on the G2 though, that's why this is so confusing.
6P is just huuuuge for me!

Hi folks,
Getting the itch to upgrade from my G3. I love the G3 but even with a fresh battery I'm having trouble getting through the day, plus I'd like to run "stock-ish" in Nougat, but the G3 ends at Marshmallow. I definitely need root, so planning to get the H918 T-mo variant (would be using it on AT&T).
My big concern is that PhoneArena ratings completely trashes the battery life on the V20. 8 hour talk time / 4.3 day standby versus the G3 at 19 hours / 22.8 days. Is the battery really this crippled? If so, I'll bail from my plans. Also considering OnePlus 3T (though it has lower res screen) or waiting for price drop on Pixel XL.
Thoughts appreciated. Thanks all!
I can get about 10 hours of battery life off my v20, this is with a few calls and some gamming in between. It all depends on how you use your phone. The lg v20 is an awesome phone, trust me i come from a SGS7e and that thing was slow,it would get hot and throttle non stop, the v20 is a world of a deference in smoothness and 0 throttle.
i get about 5 hours SOT , which is okay in my books for 3300 mah battery powered UHD LED screen. I have a charging bundle and it's perfect

Mine has pretty good battery, and I am pretty heavy user.
The phone runs cool even running FB live (don't ever try it on V10)
Yeah, if you have a lot of SOT, the batter runs out pretty quickly. Im on it all day at work from 8ish to 2, usually charge it again at 2 or 3, then sometimes I have to charge it again after dinner. All depending on how much I am on it.
I'm rather underwhelmed with the battery life on mine. I don't use my phone much but the battery goes down worryingly quickly. I came from a ZUK Z1 with NucleaRom and that was amazing for battery life, so it's been quite a shock with the LG. I've only had a it a week or so, so I haven't had much time to poke around, maybe I can tweak things a little.
Using cellular data, can easily get 4hrs SOT and 7-8hrs SOT Using WIFI only. No games, just browsing etc.
The battery is removable!!
If you cycle the spent battery into a charger as you replace it with a new one, you never actually have to plug in the phone.
It's amazing to me that anyone would consider a slightly larger battery in a sealed phone as a comparable, much less superior option.
To give a more empirical answer though, here is a 24h snapshot of my power use, occasionally plugging in when in car / at comp (H918, mostly on good wifi, poor cell signal, running NATF MegaRom 5 + Werewolf Kernel 2.0+ anti-throttling to improve performance/charging speed)
Should probably add that my SOT over that period was, considerable
Had a spare battery in my bag, made it through without (though I love to know that I don't have to worry about power!)
I am a moderate to heavy user, and I have to charge my phone three times a day! In my opinion the battery life is pathetic, so I bought a ZeroLemon 10,000mAh extended battery to replace the original battery. It is quite large but I can squeeze days out of this thing! Here it is on Amazon: http://amzn.to/2uHmcT6
If you don't mind the size, it is a must have!
Feel free to share your best battery usage and screen on time in this thread.
I had the phone for a few days, and this is my phone after 2 days of use. Very impressive in my opinion.

Maybe because mi max is meant to last longer in terms of battery life. In addition, most mid range devices doesn't really have that much of a hardware feature unlike most high end flagship phones.

So you are comparing U11+ with xiaomi which has only snapdragon 650 on board (midrange), uses only full HD screen and has 4850mAh battery which is almost 1000 more than u11+? Did you expect 5 days with no charging? lol
I'm really happy with the battery. I expected the larger battery to cope with the display, and be average, but it's exceeded my expectations.
I'm a medium/ heavy user depending on the day.
Today is my record so far, had the phone for about 3 weeks, see pic
I have started putting power saver on overnight, clear all apps, and WiFi and data off. I'm using two sims aswell, not sure if that makes a difference
Here is mine.
Far better than my old Nexus 5 but I can't compare with other flagships. It last all day, from 7am to 22pm with ease. I needed to recharge my N5 2 to 3 times a day with similar usage.
Today
4H SOT over 12h50 and 39% left.
During this time, I played 1h of Airport City game and run for 50 min (so GPS for 50 min).
Google fit tracks me all day long too.

Exceeds my expectations

I am not sure what it could be, I am also using the 6GB 128GB Translucent version from Hong Kong. The phone is currently on software 1.24.400.2, even though I have had great battery since day one. I recommend a factory reset just in case or check on the battery section, details what is draining it quicker. I can even play games for the majority of the charge and still get around 7hrs every time. Also check for gesture features, google maps, apps in sync, and many things that could drain your battery.

Hi, can you post a battery history screenshot with 7hrs SOT ?
I am just configuring mine (European Dual SIM, 6GB, 128 GB), and with just a few apps, no games, it loses 20% overnight.
It seems awful, I am almost considering returning it, and I had such high hopes.
I already factory reset it again and try to test it further.
What is you screen off drain overnight, on Wifi ?
I only have one SIM, the always on display only on motion launch, location normal, a HW2 android wear watch.

Something is draining your phone like crazy if it loses 20% overnight. That is not normal behaviour at all

Happy with this considering I didn't even get to drain till 10%
It shouldn't drain that much overnight tbh
