Disable apps turning on screen when phone is locked? - HTC One A9

I don't want my screen to turn on when I get texts or calls, or any notifications for that matter. I prefer to have to touch my phone to turn the screen on every time.
Why isn't this an obvious option to select?
Thx...

In the notification settings in most apps there's a wake screen option. Uncheck that and you should be good to go.

[Q] Unread Email Count

I'm just confirming that there is no option or tweak to get the default mail app to display a number of unread messages. I'm often bombarded with notifications so I clear all but it would be nice to see a count of emails I have not read. I believe my old email app had this feature.
I also wish the phone did not default to the lock screen every time the screen is shut off. I know this was an option on my SG3.
Otherwise this phone is still amazing...

By default mail app do you mean the GMail or the other one labeled as "mail"? I use the Mail one for work emails and I think it tells me in the app drawer how many I have unread. Gmail tells me within the app how many I have unread.
As far as the lock screen...do you not want it lock instantly when you turn the screen off? Like say you turn off the screen and 5 seconds later you need to get in but don't wanna see the lock screen?

I believe that's a function of the launcher you use, not the mail app itself. I know Nova supports displaying unread counts as an option with an add-on.
For the lock screen, you can choose in Security Settings if you want it to go to the lock screen, or the challenge/pin/pattern screen. The option is "Bypass lock screen on wake".

Correct, the "mail" app ie Outlook or whatever you have setup. If the email is cleared out as a notification yes going into the app displays the amount of unread mail. I was wondering if something similar to the link below is possible.

I do not want it to do anything if it is within the specified time which is one hour. For example if the screen is shut off and within an hour turned back on it will simply activate the screen it was on, it will not load the lock screen. This was an option on my GS3

Confirmed this is and was checked, yet I still hit the lock screen every time the phone is woken. Perhaps a group policy bug?

Well, I know that used to work a few days ago (or at the very least it used to work to bypass the lock screen and go to the pattern screen), but it's not anymore. I even tried a couple different combinations of the "Lock screen after..." and "Bypass lock screen on wake" options, but I kept seeing the lock screen regardless of what options I had set.
However, when I had it working I was on stock, and now I'm on Skyfall, so that may have something to do with it.

I do not think my bypass has ever actually bypassed the lock screen! Can anyone confirm?

Disable screen on for notifications?

i was wondering if anyone knew of a way to disable the screen on whenever you receive a notification?
I just want the sound and the LED to blink, not for my screen to turn on/off.

Pixel 2 lockscreen questions...

Is there a way to have the Ambient Display show notifications, but not the lock screen? I like seeing that there is a notification while the phone is laying there, but I hate having a long scroll of email and other things showing once I wake the phone.
Second, is there a way to adjust the lock screen time out? Seems to default to like 5 or six seconds. I would like to lengthen that by a bit, but don't see a setting.
Thanks!

You can turn off lock screen notifications in:
Settings - Security & location - Lock screen preferences-on the lock screen
I don't know how adjusting that setting affects Ambient display though. You should experiment with it.
There is no way to adjust screen timeout on the lockscreen or Ambient display.

Yeah, I shut off notification on the lock screen but it also turns off the notification icons on the ambient display. I like those on, just not the ones on the lock screen.

I guess the definitive answer is: No, you cannot have Ambient display notifications on and lock screen notifications off.

Missing Features?

Finally had some time to play with the new 7 Pro this weekend and am wondering about a couple things.
Im using Textra for SMS/MMS and the only option I can find is for the whole screen to turn on when I get a text. Any other option that doesn't turn the entire screen on but notifies me of a text? No notification lights?
Built in pedometer or health app for monitoring how much you walk/run/bike?
No music app? Google Music is what it comes with?
Thanks
Ambient display just shows the message, make sure that's enabled
Get Google Fit for monitoring activities
For a music app just get one from the Play Store

Thanks for those!
I had ambient turned off, much better with all notifications but Textra messages still turn the whole screen on for 3-4 seconds. Wish it didn't do that
I dont have any notification lights though. If the screen is off and I miss the ambient display message, there's no way to know I missed a call or message without touching the screen?
Im having an issue with turning the screen off and my music app turns on and starts playing music. Happened 3 times now and I have no clue how Im staring it up as I put my phone away. Any ideas?

This is likely due to Gestures turned on for music.
Buttons & Gestures > Quick Gestures > Music Control toggle

Any way to disable wake screen for notifications?

I tried to enable from Custom restrictions "Don't turn on the screen" and "Don't wake for notifications" with no luck. Is this a bug or bad user?

Always nice to answer to your own questions . Ambient display -> disable New Notifications. Oneplus logic escapes me.
Disable notifications
Go to the Settings app on android > Sound & Notifications > Scroll Down and App Notifications under notification section > Tap on App name installed on your mobile > Turn off the notification for the app.
Hope this helps!

Thanks, but I wanted just to disable wake screen for notifications not to disable notifications. Was a little confused initially since Oneplus seems to have two settings for the same thing. Got it in the end...
I have the same problem, but your solution does not work for me. As far as I can tell I have everything in ambient display turned off, but the screen still wakes up (to the normal lock screen). To confirm: THE TOGGLE SETTING "NEW NOTIFICATIONS" IS NOT HIGHLIGHTED, WHICH MEANS IT IS OFF. HOWEVER, THE SCREEN STILL WAKES UP.
In addition to that I even have "no notifications on lock screen" selected, which means my screen WAKES UP AND SHOWS NOTHING. It's distracting and useless at the same time. Very annoying.
I have now turned on "ambient display when I pick up the phone". This finally made my screen stop lighting up by itself, though of course now it does it when I pick it up. But at least it doesn't distract me while I'm working on my pc with my phone on the table.
I like my 7 Pro very much...and since this is my 2nd phone from OnePlus, I guess I am fairly satisfied with their implementation of Android Q. However, their way of setting up notifications is one of the worst things I have ever seen! It is convoluted, confusing, and counter intuitive.... not to mention just plain ridiculous. I hope they really get on the ball with the issue of notifications and their useless Horizon light very SOON because a cell phone without proper, accurate, notifications totally defeats the purpose of having a "portable" communications device.

I am having the same issue, how did you get the screen to stop waking up?
I'm trying to find a fix for this, as well. I have an app that wakes screen besides delivering the notification with/without sound. And now I realize I have another one. I also want to have those notifications on, but without waking my screen, just like most of the other apps' notifications. And this is not related to ambient display. In my case, I have stock Android, on a Pixel 3XL.
Thanks!

Actually, there is a fix now, if you run Android 13. Under Apps->Special app access, there is a new option called 'Turn screen on'. I disallowed the annoying app and solved my issue.
I want to disable lock screen wake up for text messages and still no luck on S23. I went under special app access and disabled "Turn screen on" for the messages app (and others), and guess what? The screen still comes on when I get a text. HOLY ANNOYING.
You can turn Lock Screen Notifications completely off, but I dont want that. I want the audible notification to come in without turning the battery draining screen on, and when I tap the screen with my finger I want to see the app badge that tells me when app the notification came in on (signal, or messages, or fakebook, etc). If it's fakebook I may ignore it for example.

As I said in my post, I don't want to disable notifications, I want to disable lighting up the whole screen. The notification icon should show on the always on display without going full annoying brightness on the screen for 5 seconds. That's just dumb.

You might want to consider utilizing the Google Issue Tracker which is a tool used internally at Google to track bugs and feature requests during product development.
For Do Not Disturb - If you have the setting "Always show time and info" enabled (Settings > Display > Lock Screen > Always show time and info) your screen will display a dimly lit clock when the screen is locked, among some other status icons.
In the DND settings, if you check "Don't wake for notifications" and you get a new notification (text, ig, whatever the notification is), it will not show on the screen until you unlock the phone. It will just display that clock and you'll be unaware of the notification.
If you UNcheck "Don't wake for notifications", the lock screen with the large dimly lit clock will change to show the small icons for whatever the notification is.
If you do NOT have enabled the setting "Always show time and info" (Settings > Display > Lock Screen > Always show time and info), I imagine it would be the same behavior, except you would see a difference when you manually wake up (but don't unlock) your screen--you would either see that you got a text message or whatever the notification is, or you wouldn't until you fully unlock the screen.
